Chapter 42.3 - The cat & mouse game (Part 1)

The current scene unfolding on the fifth floor of the monster dungeon could best be described as unusually odd. There was a terrified skeleton running at fully speed with an undead girl wrapped in his arm whilst the fifth floor goblin doctor chased behind him waving a falchion. The undead girl would have been screaming for help, unfortunately the skeleton stuffed his bony fingers in her mouth to prevent her from speaking.

This scene brought about many strange stares from monsters roaming about on the streets. It wasn’t every day that monsters got to see something so curious. Street brawls were common on a daily basis. Even chases were very common. However, this chase was very different from the rest. Why was the goblin doctor involved in it? Many of the onlookers had known the goblin doctor for a long time but all would have testified the doctor lacks a violent bone. None present had even seen the doctor so terrifyingly angry. Thus, many of the onlookers naturally concluded the skeleton must be at fault. Why else would just a peaceful healer chase after someone brandishing his weapon?

Fortunately for Sora, being peaceful healer, the goblin couldn’t match Sora’s stamina. Although, it initially seemed that Sora would be caught as the goblin was faster. Sora had far greater reserves of stamina being a skeleton warrior. It could soon be seen, the healer goblin was huffing and puffing and his pace had considerably slowed down.

For a moment Sora thought he was safe. However, that thought only lasted a fraction of a second. Seeing the goblin healer give up on the chase and cussing the gods for his poor stamina – many sympathizers appeared from the watching crowds. Some of these monsters had been saved from the brink of death/ purification by the healer. If the healer didn’t have the stamina to chase after the “child kidnapping” skeleton then they would become the healer’s legs and chase after Sora.

Normally, most people would chose to ignore the situation and move on.  However, monsters are different. Monsters are thirsty for blood and brawls. How could they let this opportunity slip by?

Much to Sora’s dismay, the cat and mouse game restarted with greater ferociousness. One vampire, one young orc, three goblins, two mummies, a dozen kobolds and at least two dozen killer bunnies (like those found in minecraft) now chased after Sora.

Every monster had their own reason for indulging in this surreal chase. The goblins were true sympathizers to the healer as the healer was a goblin – the pride of goblins was at stake.

The mummies too were very much indebted to the healer and wouldn’t shy away from helping the doctor. The mummies also wanted to increase their own ranks – so capturing Sora was in their interest.

The young orc had no clue what was going on but his blood began to boil the moment he learnt there was an opportunity to display some violence. The orc’s hand’s had been itching for some action all day – skeleton bowling is one of the favoured Orc sports.

The vampire was more interested in the undead girl than in Sora. Being one of the more intellectual races – the vampire reasoned the doctor is after the girl. Therefore, it is the girl which is special. Therefore, the girl must be human. The last line of reasoning was quite a big jump but nonetheless the vampire chased after Sora for the girl. If she was human child – dessert would be most pleasing tonight. If she was anything else – she would make a good slave.

The tale has been illicitly lifted; should you spot it on Amazon, report the violation.

The kobolds were amongst the least intelligent races. They didn’t even know why was every chasing Sora and joined in. Most of them believed, Sora was some sort of commodity or had some treasure.

Lastly, the killer bunnies chased anything that ran. It was really common during chase incidents in the dungeons that a trail of bunnies could be seen.

All in all, every monster had a selfish reason – very monster like. Did any of them fear Sora? No. If a skeleton was running away from the goblin healer he could only be considered. If the food chain of the monster world had to be drawn, healers stood at the absolute bottom (when comparing similar level / age etc). Clearly, anything below a healer would only be considered nothing more than a harmless insect.

In the minds of all the monsters who saw Sora flee for his life – they were certain – Sora is a weakling. Why else would Sora run away? The strong do not run away from the weak. Just as a lion will not flee from a tortoise, the only explanation for the fleeing skeleton from a fifth floor healer was the inescapable conclusion the skeleton was from the first floor.

Given this natural conclusion, the monsters had no doubt Sora was no superior being and they chased after him without the slightest hesitation - except for the killer bunnies those guys chase after anything big or small, weak or strong – it didn’t matter to them.

It was a very dire moment for Sora, at best he had at most a two minutes of lead time over the orc and goblins. The kobolds were no match for Sora’s speed so they could be dismissed as nothing but scavengers.  However, the real problem was posed by the vampire and killer bunnies. Since, killer bunnies were nothing but mindless monsters that chased anything that ran, Sora was least concerned about them. They looked terrifying but so cute at the same time…

Only the vampire was truly a worrisome being. By default knowledge, Vampire have high agility and stamina. Since this was a low level scum vampire – it could not fly or transform into a bat but its speed was still very much formidable compared to the others.  In mere seconds, the vampire overtook Sora and stood in his path.

“Give me the girl, skeleton and I will let you pass unharmed.”

Much to the surprise of the vampire, Sora didn’t even think about it.  He happily threw Ai towards the vampire and ran past him. Sora was more than happy to get rid of her.

The vampire was very much confused as he stared at the fleeing skeleton’s back. Wasn’t the girl the object of interest?

Did he get it wrong?

The skeleton even appeared happy to get rid of the girl.

The vampire was very very confused...he felt like someone just made a moron out of him.
