Book 8: Chapter 072 - The Divine Dryad

Book 8: Chapter 072 - The Divine Dryad

Sorry for such a long delay since the last chapter. I've been extremely busy (working 11 hour days, 7 AM to 6 PM basically) so I haven't had time to edit the chapters. I've spent the free time that I have had writing and I currently have drafts up to Chapter 87 including Riley's Trial and two chapters involving Zedd. This major arc (Eastern Empire) should end by Chapter 90 and will begin the fourth major arc immediately after. The Anna and Riley one is being worked on where Anna reveals more about her past and it will explain what she did during her travels to other worlds. Riley's is mainly a change to a class that allows military and weapon knowledge to be put to good use. The main problem is that I don't have time to read through it to elaborate on certain parts that I feel like need fixing. This chapter and the next one will set up for the "Annual Tournament" and the revelation of who the main enemy is for this arc. I've had a hard time dividing this arc into books as well, because the events basically flow from one to the next.

But in case you cannot wait, here are some spoilers

Eastern Empire's Final Enemy

Spoiler :

Han Dou Gu is the major enemy of this arc. He is the one who gave the Golden Dragon Clan the "Berserk" ability and was hoping to give it to others to have them kill and weaken each other. This will allow him, a Guide, to lead his Demi-Human army against the weakened Eastern Empire. However, his plains are foiled when he is forced to step in to fight Garnet who helps to protect the Divine Phoenix Clan.

Garnet's Next Evolution

Spoiler :

Triggered by absorbing a inhuman "Chimera" type Guide. This forces Garnet's different forms together with each of the forms transforming into a "tail" that she can use in her new Empress of Shadows form. It will grow and evolve as she acquires new powers. On top of that, more of her old abilities will start merging with new ones, creating evolutions there as well and stopping her from just being overloaded with weak abilities.

Anna

Spoiler :

Acquired the powers of a Guide during her "travels" between the fall of Constantinople and her return to Antium. She willingly sealed away her own powers to prevent herself from abusing it. However, she will unseal it with the arrival of the first "high tier" Guide further down the line. A high tier Guide is a Guide that has merged with a Demon and has successfully taken control of it, granting them immense power and resistance. Anna's is a "Greed Demon," hinted at by the fact that she is the keeper of the treasury and seems to have a near limitless amount of weapons to throw around.

Lucy

Spoiler :

Named as Garnet's "price" to help protect Riley's world in order to bring her back to Riley. Akiza teaches Garnet how to create copies of herself like the Guides do, but this one comes without the penalty, but is also something unique and requires numerous special skills to perform. She will be brought to the empty body in Constantinople from which she will be linked with to form the sixth guardian.

Next Major Arc

Spoiler :

The next major arc will continue right where this one leaves off. With the defeat of Han Dou Gu, numerous black spheres are opened up in the sky and they are drawn towards one another. Eventually, they start connecting and create the "tear" in the sky that is mentioned in the poem. This allows mid tier Guides like Han Dou Gu to enter much more easily and a high tier Guide can make their way through with just a little force. This results in the opening of a massive rift that stretches across the eastern hemisphere of the planet, forcing the remainders of the Coalition Army to finally band together and form an offensive. In the mean time, Garnet will have to work with Constantinople, the remnants of the clans in the Eastern Empire from Han Dou Gu's Invasion, and a few other allies to fight off the Invasion by triggering one of the hidden secrets of Constantinople, the ability to draw all Invaders in the world to a single point, Constantinople itself. The same ability was used by the previous Hero, Assad, in an attempt to buy time, but failed as he lacked support from others. This time, Garnet will have to use it and ensure that the city survives with the help of the Eastern Empire that now trusts her. However, the Dark Mages have not forgotten Garnet's declaration of war and will use this opportunity to try to seize the city for themselves to turn against the Grey Ghosts.

Anyways, here is the actual chapter

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There were a total of twelve Divine Beasts, each one taking on the form of something that would eventually create the zodiac. However, Garnet would likely not need them all. In order for her to become stronger, she had to defeat these creatures herself and absorb them. Each of them were supposed to be incredibly strong. Garnet thought that this was going to be a simple meet the Spirit God, befriend them, and get their power. However, this was turning into something much different. On top of that, she had no idea how much time had passed since she entered the Ancient Graveyard since there was no proper day and night cycle. When she slept, it was sunny. When she awoke it was still sunny.

"So are you ready?" Nina asked.

"Just a second," said Garnet as she headed out. There were a few spare rooms for the occasional guest, but there were not many of them. After all, most people did not stay when the fog was present. Most people were only here when the fog was gone because the creatures were weaker then too.

As Garnet headed out, Adrian, Nina, and Santo were already waiting for her. They were to escort her to the Divine Beasts. Garnet had doubts. After all, she could barely do anything during the last Invasion against all the powerful creatures that were being sent out. She was now told that she had to defeat some powerful creatures in order to become stronger. If she was not strong enough, she would have to train first.

"We're ready when you are," said Adrian.

"So where are we going?" Garnet asked.

"We're going to the one Divine Beast that is partially sealed and much weaker than the others," Santo replied.

"Why did they not just seal all of them?" Garnet wondered. "It would make it easier."

"Because this is a trial for you to show that you are strong enough to face the incoming threats," Nina replied. "If you cannot even defeat this creature yourself, there's no way that you can face the new threats that will someday appear."

"Do you know what kind of spirit they are?" Garnet asked.

"The sealed one is a Dryad," Santo answered. "It's something that resembles a wood spirit, but is still alive."

The mention of a wood spirit brought up the image of Meliae in Garnet's mind. "Let's get going," said Garnet.

As the four of them left the protective barrier, Adrian, Nina, and Santo put on their helmets. They walked around in the fog in the full metal suits in order to be able to see and sense things. "Why don't I get one of those metal suits?" Garnet asked as they continued to walk.

"It takes them a while to make new ones, and the materials are not exactly easy to come by," said Adrian. "It would be nice if there were more of us since we could then actually explore this place thoroughly."

"It's not fully explored?" Garnet was surprised by this.

"We thought it was at first," said Nina. "But then over time, Himiko realized they were small changes, and this place is constantly changing. It's not easy to have a group large enough or strong enough to keep track of all the changes. We only keep track of the important fixtures."

"Such as?" Garnet asked.

"The four items meant to be given to each Hero," said Santo. "That is something that we work to keep track of and maintain."

"Have you met any of the other Heroes?" Garnet asked.

They all shook their head and said, "No."

"The Heroes live on the other side in the world without fog," Santo replied. "While it would be nice to see that world, it is our duty for now to maintain this one. I would like to meet the others someday though."

Garnet did as well. She wanted to meet the others. Hopefully they would be something like her. It was nice to know that there were others who would eventually help her fight against the Invasions besides her friends. At first it seemed like some people were not really treating it like something serious and busy with power struggles, but it was only in the areas around Anzio and Antium because of their policies. They were places like the Eastern Empire that constantly monitored the black star in their area even though they were dealing with their own power struggles.

The four of them passed through the mist for a long time before they approached the entrance to a thick forest. "We're here," said Adrian.

Trees stretched as far as the eyes could see. Not only was there a thick fog, there was also darkness. Darkness that even Garnet's eyes could not see through despite her Night Vision. This was no ordinary darkness. On top of that there was a strange feeling coming from deep inside the forest. It was as if the temperature suddenly dropped to freezing temperatures. "Something doesn't feel quite right here," said Garnet.

"The Divine Beast's power is dispersed throughout the forest," said Nina. "That's how it is weakened."

The Divine Beast had enough power to affect the entire forest. That was proof of its power. Even though it was sealed, this was still what it was capable of. Its power exceeded anything she had ever come across. If this much power was concentrated into a single person, they could probably destroy a city in an instant.

"So somewhere in this forest is the Divine Beast right?" Garnet asked once more.

"Yes," said Adrian. "You have to face it alone. It should not be able to move in its seal and if you keep your distance it shouldn't be able to kill you either."

This was the first time Garnet was going to have to face a terrifying creature by herself. In the past, she always had help of some kind. It weighed on her mind as she thought about whether or not she was strong enough to defeat the creature and absorb it. She looked upon the vast forest that stood in front of her. This was the result of the Divine Beast's power simply leaking out. That power was enough to shape the landscape.

No matter how much Garnet tried to prepare herself mentally, she imagined an extremely large and beast like tree, much like one of the ones that attacked during the Invasion. "Alright, I think I'm ready," she said.

"Good luck, we'll wait for you here," said Santo as he waved to Garnet.

Garnet turned around and headed into the dense forest. It was unlike any of the other forests that she had been inside. The trees were so tightly packed that there was no clear road. The roots of the trees on the ground seemed to almost overlap with one another. She had to be careful not to trip over the roots as she made her way around the trees. The fog was not able to make its way in here, but it was still extremely dark.

As Garnet looked around, she saw no signs of life at all. Like the tomb she found before, there were no signs of life around it unless you counted the trees and plants. The living animals and insects stayed far away from this place. It was almost as if they treated the area like it was toxic. But, if they knew that there was a powerful creature lurking here, it was enough of a reason to stay away. No one wants to be eaten by whatever was living here.

Stat Increase: Vitality+1

The difficulty was finding the correct path. Even with her map, there was no clear path to the center of the area. She had to weave around the trees and find paths that she could walk through. The roots of the tress overlapped in numerous places, making them seem as if they were all intertwined. It was impossible to fly and see anything below with the thick tree coverage. If Garnet could have at least sensed the Divine Beast, she might have had an easier time finding it, but the amount of energy in the land was evenly distributed throughout the area, making it impossible to sense anything right now.

Stat Increase: Vitality+1

There was also something very unusual about some of the trees. Normally, the trunk of a tree only has a few variations of colors. They were usually brown, white, black, or red. However, there were a few trees that had blue, gold, purple, and even pink trunks. As Garnet slashed at the colored trunk with her sword, even the inside was similar. They were of unusual colors that matched the outside of the tree. It was definitely something not normal. In every hundred or so trees, two or three would be of a different color.

Stat Increase: Vitality+1

It was extremely quiet. As Garnet made her way forward, the only thing she could hear was her footsteps. Whenever she stopped moving, it would just be dead silence. The leaves of the trees not would even rustle due to the lack of wind. Garnet continued forward, trying to keep this eerie feeling out of her head.

Garnet could not tell how long she was wandering around in the forest. It could have been a few hours or a few days. There was no way to know for sure. Eventually, Garnet found a large red tree with a metal plaque. On it was the same message as the one in the tomb:

The door was inscribed with a message:

During the darkest of days,

The great tyrant will return.

The colored sky will fall down,

Then the brightest moon shall rise.

Beware of the false bearers,

For they only bring darkness.

Only those who can unite,

Can face the Tyrant of Night.

Eight lines, seven syllables each, telling about the darkest of days and how a powerful creature will return. Himiko called it the Elder Lich. The undead summoners that Garnet had fought before were called Arch Lich. It was likely that the two were related, but the Elder Lich was much stronger. Even Anna worried that there was something powerful that she could not defeat either. There were several more of these metal plaques on the trees in the surrounding area.

Garnet continued on her way until she finally spotted something unusual. There was a single woman, tied with roots to a single tree. She was wearing a green and gold dress, something similar to the one that the Xiao Clan wore, but this one was not a functional robe. It was more ornate and for like an event. The woman had long brown hair with green eyes and green lips. She appeared much more human than any spirit that she had encountered. With the exception of her oddly colored lips, she could pass as a human.

She was very beautiful, and she was peacefully sleeping there. Garnet thought about how long it has been since she slept without worrying about something. She could not remember at all. Ever before she became a Hero, she rarely had peaceful nights of sleep. Now that she was duty bound to save the world, it was even harder to sleep at night.

Underneath the woman was some sort of crystal base. The roots were coming from there. Silwest had her power drained through those roots and then the roots directed them throughout the rest of the forest.

Garnet looked around to see if there were any traps like in the tomb before. There was nothing. She carefully approached the woman, worried that there were traps. Luckily, there were none. There was probably some different for each Hero to undergo.

Quest Update: Divine Beast (I)

Find and gain the approval of the Divine Beasts in the Ancient Graveyard.

Her quest suddenly changed. It was no longer "defeat." It was now to gain the approval of. "Why did it suddenly change?" Garnet thought to herself.

Garnet looked at the woman real close in the face. She was indeed sleeping. Her face was extremely pale as well. She reached out her hand and poked the woman in the stomach. Nothing happened. Garnet continued to poke, each time a little harder.

"Alright stop it!" said the woman as she opened her eyes.

Garnet suddenly took a step back, afraid of what might happen. The woman could only move her head and her right hand, but just a little bit. "I thought you were dead for a moment there," she said.

"The name's Silwest, and I was wondering what you were going to do," said the woman. "The last person who came here just flat out tried to kill me!"

Silwest was probably referring to Assad, the previous Hero. "So what do I have to do for you to help me?" Garnet asked.

"Kill me," said Silwest. "You have to do it in order to acquire my power." She closed her eyes and raised her head, exposing her neck.

Garnet looked at Silwest. Silwest had no intention to or was incapable of defending herself. All Garnet had to do was cut her neck or stab her through the heart. But, the fact that the quest updated itself from "defeat" to "gain the approval of" meant that the goal might not be to defeat them.

"No," said Garnet.

"It's the only way," said Silwest.

"I'll find another way," said Garnet. "You don't deserve to be sealed here for all of eternity."

Garnet drew her sword and began to try to cut away at the roots binding Silwest. "What are you doing?!?" Silwest shouted angrily. "Kill me, let me die, let me fulfill my lifelong duty!"

"I refuse," said Garnet. "I'll find another way. If the previous Hero could become as strong as he was without killing you, that means I can too."

No matter how hard Garnet chopped away at the roots, they would heal. They were maintaining themselves using Silwest's powers. "Come on," said Silwest. "You know you want to kill me and take my power."

"If you are in fact a Divine Beast, that must mean there is a way for you to transfer your abilities to me without killing you does it not?" Garnet asked.

Silwest's face was suddenly met with surprise. "So you're not just an idiot child," she said. "Very well, I'll concede."

The roots around Silwest disappeared into her body. The ground that she was standing on was indeed some type of Crystal Conduit. However, Silwest was not actually sealed, she just made herself look like it. "You're right, there are other ways," said Silwest. "I just wanted to see how far you would be willing to go for power."

"I want power, but I don't want my desire for power to consume me like it does others," Garnet replied.

"Did you know that your predecessor did not even hesitate to try to thrust his sword into my heart?" Silwest asked as she stepped forward towards Garnet.

"I didn't know," said Garnet. It gave the image that the previous Hero was a very violent person. Judging from how Assad spoke and acted, it was always possible. Even the abilities he bestowed upon Garnet were very suited for killing.

"It's why he failed at this step of the Hero's Journey," said Silwest. "He could not even get past me. After this, he simply dedicated himself to fighting."

"I have many questions," said Garnet.

"The power of the Divine Beasts is meant to supplement that of the Mana Beast," Silwest explained. "It will help the development of your Hero System abilities."

Silwest took out an empty flask. She then fashioned a wooden knife from her hand and cut her wrist. Her yellow orange blood began to flow into the flask. When the flask was filled, the blood resembled syrup. She handed the flask to Garnet.

Name: Blood of the Divine Dryad

Quality: ???

Effects: ???

"Drink it and you will obtain my power," said Silwest. "Be warned though, if you are not really a Hero, you will die from exposure to it."

In other words, do not let anyone else touch or take it. Garnet had a few questions for Silwest though. "Can you tell me more about the Elder Lich?" she asked.

"I was born long after the Elder Lich came to power," said Silwest. "I don't know much about it."

"What about the Invasions?" Garnet asked.

"If you're asking about the monsters that periodically attack a world, the worlds are sealed off," Silwest replied. "But occasionally, a hole opens up in the sky and frightening creatures are allowed to come through. It is said that when several holes open up, they will connect and tear an enormous opening into the sky."

The meaning behind the "darkest of days" suddenly became a lot clearer. The black stars in the sky will create a rip large enough for the Invasion to occur over a large section of the world. There was currently one in Constantinople and one out outside the Northern Walls of the Eastern Empire.

"Why do you live here by yourself if you're not really sealed?" Garnet asked.

"I don't really like other people," said Silwest. "I much prefer to spend time by myself and it's much more relaxing than having to deal with people all the time."

"What about Himiko?" Garnet asked. She had questions since Himiko was not telling her a lot.

"She's a crazy old woman who has built entire societies," said Silwest. "She acquired her Immortality by siphoning energy off the land to fuel her abilities. But if you want information about her personal life, I don't know anything about it."

"I see…" said Garnet as she thought about other questions. Silwest only had basic information, it was too little to actually make sense of or put to use. She needed to ask Himiko directly for real answers. "Alright, that's all I have to ask for now."

Garnet took the flask and drank all of the yellow orange liquid. It was sweet, the texture was kind of like honey. There was something comforting about it. It felt almost as if she just had some delicious warm homemade chicken noodle soup. But then Garnet suddenly realized that what she was drinking was actually in fact, a living thing's blood.

The blood suddenly began to flare up in Garnet's body, causing her to feel a hot sensation flow throughout her body. She had experienced this before, but it was less severe.

Quest Complete: Divine Power

Gained the approval of Silwest

There were not a lot of new skills, but they were all very powerful. Stacking the damage reduction passives made even the most powerful of attacks deal significantly less damage. The skill that stood out to Garnet was Crystal Bolt, the skill that Marianne had used on her before. Now, she could use it as well.

Garnet also acquired a new transformation, Fairy. Judging from the bonuses, it was a form that was more defensive than her Queen of the Night or her Nine Tailed Fox transformation. "Transformation: Fairy!" She could not help but try it out.

Her clothes turned green and gold. Her winds split into four light green transparent wings. Her hair even turned green.

"Be careful in your pursuit of power," Silwest interrupted.

Garnet turned to Silwest and asked, "What do you mean?"

"In pursuing power, there is a chance you might become a monster yourself," said Silwest.

Garnet had never thought about it that way. She had always been absorbing the blood and essence of whatever she defeated. It made her stronger because a human's body is a lot weaker and more fragile than people realize. It was possible that at some point, she would absorb too much and even her original body would transform. It was even possible that her judgment and decision making abilities were affected since she justified her own ruthlessness at times. Absorbing the Siren was what caused her first unintentional transformation. Thinking about it now, she was surprised that the other things she absorbed did not change her as much.

"I'll be careful," said Garnet.

"See that you do," said SIlwest. "I don't want you to transform into another monster."

"What does that have to do with anything?" Garnet asked.

"It is believed that when a Hero loses the blessing of the Hero System, they are said to have become a monster that can no longer be worthy of saving the world," said Silwest.

This was surprising news to Garnet. It was actually possible to lose the Hero System based on your own actions. Just awakening to it did not mean it was yours to keep. If you lost its approval, you lost its power as well. It was also possible that there was a time limit to being a Hero. Despite Garnet's semi-immortality, absorbing the blood and essence of so many creatures could one day transform her into a monster incapable of wielding the Hero System. The question was what happened to those that did lose the blessing. "Do you know of anyone like that?" Garnet asked.

"No," said Silwest. "I have seen others come close, but it is possible that a Hero who loses the blessing will become an equally powerful monster."
