Slightly shorter story arc. Extras this time will be just some rejected ideas that I threw out along with some things that will come in the future.
------------------------------------------------------------
Garnet hid among the soldiers as they returned to Antium. All of the soldiers walked straight ahead. Even King Arnold's troops opened a path for them out of fear. After all, volunteer soldiers had just taken out the entire invading army by themselves. They suffered heavy losses as well, nearly 40% in all, but the right wing was almost annihilated. By any standard, losing nearly half your army was very a heavy loss. In addition, they all looked at King Arnold's men with discontent. King Arnold had left the volunteer soldiers to die, intending to have them thin out the number of enemies and no intention to save them. The volunteer soldiers never received any help. No archers, no mages, and a bare minimum amount of equipment.
PTOOEY. Stephenson even spat at the ground in front of the regular soldiers. Garnet could see that they were using their eyes looking for someone among the crowd, but the soldiers all wore identical equipment, making it difficult to differentiate between them.
As the volunteer army made their way back to the city, they were blocked by King Arnold and some of his men. "Halt!" shouted King Arnold. "I demand to know who is in charge."
Everyone stayed silent. Garnet was surprised, she was certain that someone was going to turn them in. "We're in charge of the Seventh Battalion!" said Barry as he stepped forward with Stephenson.
"I don't know about the rest though," said Stephenson.
Garnet watched as from each of the battalions, two people stepped forward. "I'm in charge of this battalion," said another man.
"Who is your commander though?" asked King Arnold. "That is what I want to know."
"We have no commander," said Stephenson. "We decided that our battalion needed some kind of hierarchy during the battle, so we decided on a co-officer situation."
Stephenson had just undermined the fact that nobles were needed to lead the people. A volunteer army led by volunteers completely challenged what they were used to. It was believed that a noble was the leader because they had the special knowledge and skills needed for leadership while the commoners did not. Garnet could not help but smile at this. She no longer needed to provoke King Arnold on their own. With this, commoners and nobles had leaders that were willing to go against King Arnold now.
Garnet watched as King Arnold became infuriated. "Bring the ones who stood forward to the prison!" he shouted.
Immediately, the soldiers armed with shields stepped forward and blocked the path of King Arnold's men. There was now a confrontation between King Arnold and the volunteer army. If it was known that King Arnold fought against the volunteer army, especially one that just saved the city, things would become even worse for him. "Stand down," said King Arnold.
"If this is what a soldier is treated like, I quit," said Stephenson as he threw down his sword. "I refuse to support a King who has no concern for me."
Barry immediately followed and did the same. Some of the other volunteers began to follow. If King Arnold turned on them now, he would be killing his own civilians in front of thousands of witnesses. Garnet joined the masses of people doing it so that she would not stand out and would be able to blend with everyone. She could see that King Arnold was infuriated by this action as he was losing more and more control over the people.
"Where are you going now?" Barry asked Garnet.
"Home," said Garnet. "I suggest you all do the same."
"Is something going to happen?" asked Stephenson.
"King Arnold declared himself King and seized control of Antium without the approval of the other Dukes," said Garnet. "Do you think they are going to take it sitting down?"
"No," said Barry.
"Do you want to be here when the fighting breaks out?" asked Garnet.
"No," said Stephenson.
"So I suggest you flee somewhere," said Garnet. "Otherwise, there is a chance that King Arnold might try to march you to your deaths again."
This was not something easy to do since King Arnold's troops occupied the city. They controlled every entry and exit from the city.
"But if they do make us march, what should we do?" asked Barry.
"Defect," said Garnet. "Take your army and everything you have to the other Dukes and turn everything you have against King Arnold. If you can't do that either, just refuse to fight and lie down on the battlefield and faking your death or something."
All of these seemed like bad ideas for anyone who actually lived in Antium, which was most of the people there. The farmers could most likely return to their lands, but those that lived in Antium, had nowhere to run to. Their best option was to stay indoors and refuse to fight and feed the soldiers stationed in their homes. The problem was that King Arnold's soldiers forced them to join with threats.
"Anyways, figure out what you want to do," said Garnet. "I recommend you open the way for the other Dukes to attack Antium though."
With those words, Garnet left and hid herself among the people of Antium once more. Barry and Stephenson did the same. After all, they had just angered King Arnold. If King Arnold was going to retaliate against them, it would be soon. But, before King Arnold could respond, it finally happened. There was a bell being rung that could be heard throughout the city. Garnet watched as numerous soldiers ran to the West Gate.
Quest Failed: Block the Tunnels Under Antium
The city is under the siege of the Three Duke Alliance.
Dukes Wellington, Kiko, and Innes had arrived with their armies in tow, united against King Arnold.
"A new King has been chosen by three of the four Dukes of Antium," announced Zedd as his voice boomed throughout the city. "Welcome King Charles the First."
However, King Arnold would not take this sitting down. After all, he had the largest army and the most resources among all of the nobles in Antium. He was going to take his position by force. This was the true outbreak of the civil war. Garnet had weakened King Arnold, but Charles Wellington had to secure his own position by defeating King Arnold in battle.
Garnet teleported to the castle's throne room, where Zedd was waiting. "What now?" Garnet asked.
"We will help King Charles," said Zedd.
"How?" asked Garnet.
"You and I are going to block King Arnold and his soldiers from retreating into this city," said Zedd. "Most of them are stationed outside of the West Gate in order to counter King Charles' army."
"Is that even possible?" asked Garnet. Then again, Zedd is probably the greatest mage in existence. Such a task was probably easy for him.
"I just need to make my way to the West Gate," said Zedd. "Afterwards, you should join King Charles and see if he needs help."
"Okay," said Garnet. Helping Charles might not be a good idea though. Charles Wellington needed to prove that he could earn the position of King himself. If she single handedly turned the battle around, there might be those who would not accept that he earned the position. She did not want to go unless Charles called for her using the papers that she gave to him.
The two of them made their way to the West Gate. The army of King Arnold were mostly outside. There were a small number of men who remained in the city in order to continue its occupation and provide for a location for them to fall back to if needed.
Garnet watched as Zedd positioned himself in front of the West Gate. "Brambles of Ice!" It was an ice spell. Numerous thorns and vines popped up from the ground and blocked the West Gate. There was no way for them to get in or out.
"Zedd you bastard!" shouted a voice from the outside.
"What are you doing?" shouted one of the guards on top of the walls.
"My duty!" shouted Zedd as he stared down the soldier. "I am securing Antium for its rightful King!"
A soldier shot an arrow at Zedd. With a single wave of his arm, the arrow flew sideways and hit the ground.
Zedd stared down the soldier who fired at him. The soldier put down his bow and arrows. "I surrender," said the soldier.
Zedd made his way around the wall to greet the other soldiers. None of them had the guts of the first soldier. They all surrendered quietly. "Good," said Zedd. "Now I won't have to fight."
The surrendered soldiers all gathered themselves at the West Gate near the ice spell Zedd had cast. "How did you do that?" asked Garnet.
"As the King's Wizard, I have a lot of influence," said Zedd. "In addition, I also fought off most of the previous two invasions myself, few people are willing to go against my power."
It was the power of fame and reputation, something that Garnet was severely lacking at the moment. That was why she had to earn her respect through hard work. Zedd had most likely done the same while most of the nobles were born with it. The only fame Garnet had was with some of the volunteer soldiers. "I'm going to join the others," said Garnet as she took off.
"Alright," said Zedd. "I'll take care of things in here."
"Form ranks!" shouted King Charles. The soldiers of the Dukes had combined with his own. They lined up. The men with pikes and long spears were up front in order to counter any cavalry. Behind them were the swordsmen who also carried shields. The third line was the archers and finally way in the back, a small number of mages.
From the sky, garnet watched the events unfold. After all, this was a battle that Charles needed to win on his own to lay claim to the throne. Surprisingly, both sides had about 5000 soldiers. Most of King Arnold's soldiers were cut off because Zedd blocked off the West Gate and then forced the others that were still occupying the city to surrender. The fact that King Arnold still held on despite this disadvantage showed just how much more powerful King Arnold was on his own.
The plains of Antium were the only thing that stood between King Charles and King Arnold, two nobles who laid claim to the throne. However, all of the support was thrown behind King Charles, not King Arnold. Both sides sent magicians to their leaders to amplify their voice. "Surrender or else!" shouted King Arnold.
"You have to where to go," shouted Duke Innes. "If you surrender, you will only suffer an occupation."
"Never!" shouted King Arnold. "As the most powerful Duke, I am the one who is the rightful heir."
"For someone who tried to kill us all, you sure seem to think that we're the ones who are wrong," shouted Duchess Kiko.
"I have done no such thing!" shouted King Arnold. "But I will face all of you in combat if we must! Ready the cannons!" King Arnold ordered.
"Cannons?" thought Garnet. "There was more than one?!?" She quickly scanned her eyes around the battlefield, but could not see anything. She watched as both sides started to send men forward. In the corner of her eye, she saw several buffs activate, greatly increasing her stats by several fold. At this moment, Garnet was stronger than she ever was in the past.
"Ready the archers!" shouted Charles. Both sides released arrows and fire spells that flew in an arc towards the enemy. The soldiers raised their shields and blocked it. Very few people were hit.
Garnet kept her eyes open while flying over the battlefield. "Somewhere out here are multiple Magictech Cannons," she thought. She had seen the image and power of cannons from Riley's world. It was something she hoped would never be used, but King Arnold had secretly built them. She continued to expand her search radius, but she could not keep her eye off of the battle that was happening between the Kings. They were evenly matched, but the cannons could easily turn the tide of the battle.
BOOM. It was the sound of a loud explosion. Garnet watched as a bright red ball flew several thousand meters towards the battlefield. She flew immediately towards the sound. Behind her, was the sound of an explosion and many people screaming.
"Fire at will!" shouted someone from below.
Garnet turned her head and saw numerous mages who were operating three cannons. Only one had fired so far, but the mages were channeling their magic at the cannon. The crystal of the cannon that had just fired was red.
"It isn't working," said one of the mages.
They were operating the cannon that Garnet had messed with. She had to take them out so that they would not be able to use them to turn the tide of the battle. However, fighting that many mages at once could be problematic. She did not have time to transform either. "Call: Nuria!"
The only thing Garnet could do was rely on her summons to help even it out just a little. "Stop them from firing!" Garnet shouted. The streak of flame flew straight towards the mages.
"What is that?!?" shouted a mage.
"Get it away from the cannons!" another shouted.
"Call: Skeletal Hounds! Call: Skeletal Knight! Call: Skeletons!" Garnet summoned as many undead as she could in order to thin out their numbers. The hounds began to run around, knocking over the mages where they went. The knight led the skeletons as they charged the mages.
"Fire Bolt!" shouted the mages. They were rapidly shooting as many Fire Bolt as they could at Nuria.
"Keep firing!" ordered the mage in black. The enemy mages were firing all types of magic at Nuria and were able to even hurt her. As the mages concentrated their offense, Nuria was being pushed back from the relentless assault of Fire Bolts.
There was too many of them. They had only been able to take down one or two mages. Garnet needed something stronger. "Call: Romulus, Knight of Blood!"
BOOM. A pale man clad in red and black armor suddenly appeared in the center of mages. "I'm alive?" said Romulus.
A Fire Bolt struck Romulus in the head. "Hey that hurt!" he shouted. There was a giant black spot on the side of his head, but he acted like it was nothing more than a simple slap on the head.
"That's impossible!" shouted a mage. "You should be dead."
"You will be," said Romulus as he began his march towards the enemy line of mages. His shield was incredibly tough and it allowed him to deflect the single shot spells thrown in his direction.
"Help me!" shouted Garnet. "We need to stop them from firing those cannons."
"You!" shouted Romulus. "Where's my wife?" he asked.
"Give me a second, I need mana before I can summon her," said Garnet.
Garnet watched as Romulus began his assault. Just with his presence alone, the attitude of her undead monsters suddenly changed. They began to coordinate their attacks and focus their target on individual mages. Romulus was somehow commanding them.
"Call: Sylvia, Priestess of Blood!" Garnet summoned Sylvia as well. With this, the tide of the battle will greatly change. After all, they were the strongest as a team and Garnet only won because she was able to separate them with the help of Nuria and Mazu.
"There you are!" said Romulus as he rushed to Sylvia's side.
"I was right to believe in her," said Sylvia. "Now we're together again."
Romulus slowly pushed his way towards the other mages. While they were numerous in number, they were no match for Romulus' incredible defense, especially with Sylvia supporting him. BANG. One of the mages blew off Romulus' arm carrying the sword.
"Blood Sacrifice!" Sylvia sacrificed some of her own health to restore Romulus' arm.
"Monsters!" shouted the mage in black. "You're all monsters!" He and the other mages started to run.
"Leave them," said Garnet. "We have something more important to do."
"What are you doing?" asked Sylvia.
"Taking something important and making sure that these things are never used," said Garnet as she proceeded to rip out the Crystal Catalysts of the two remaining cannons. "Make sure to protect me while I do this." The Crystal Catalysts were powerful. After all, Zedd used them to enhance Garnet's clothes. It was likely that she could use them for other purposes as well.
"I can feel people dying," said Sylvia.
"Over there in the North, where we fought, are two Kings fighting over control of Antium," said Garnet.
"What are you doing here then?" asked Romulus. "Shouldn't you help them?"
"I am," said Garnet. "They were going to use these to turn the tide of the battle, now I'm going to use them for myself."
"That's a Crystal Catalyst!" said Sylvia. "I've seen pictures and descriptions, but never one in person."
"Are they that rare?" asked Garnet. She thought about the one that was being absorbed into her mage robe.
"Ones of that size are very rare," said Sylvia. "If you could process them, then you could embed them into a robe to amplify your magic."
This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
Zedd could probably help with that. After all, he was the one that taught Garnet a lot of magic. "Stand back," said Garnet as she finished extracting the two Crystal Catalysts. "Fire Ball!"
BOOM. The Magictech Cannon began to crack. "Fire Ball!" The Magitech Cannon shattered into pieces. Garnet did the same with the others. Garnet hoped that no one would ever use such a weapon again. After all, they were terrifying weapons, ones that could kill multiple people in a single shot. She then took many pieces of the cannon fragments and hid them away in her Inventory. There was always a chance that she could use the magic ore that made the cannons for something else in the future.
Afterwards, Garnet hurried back to the battlefield, where the forces of King Arnold and King Charles were still fighting. Romulus and Sylvia followed closely behind.
Level Up: Haste (Level 2)
"Foolish people are still fighting to protect the nobles who exploit them," said Romulus. His hatred for the nobles of Antium was fierce. She could see it in his eyes. He wanted to kill King Arnold.
"No," said Garnet as she raised her arm to hold Romulus back. "He must pay for his crimes the right way."
"You expect me to sit here and watch?" asked Romulus.
"You're stupid," said Sylvia. "Hurry up and just end this, you have the power."
"But will people accept King Charles' rule if someone else single handedly turned the tide of battle?" asked Garnet. "The point of this battle is for King Charles to show that he is a better man and also stronger than King Arnold, not having to resort to dirty tactics to win. If he does not fight this battle himself, what will happen when he does become King? Will people accept him?"
These were questions Garnet had been pondering as well. She could have removed King Arnold from power by force. She even had the chance at the execution grounds, but that would have left another power vacuum and it would not be easily accepted as a victory. On the other hand, tradition states that the Dukes decide, so if the Dukes are the ones who choose a new King, there might be less resistance. From there, the King could direct policy once more to guide other changes.
The battle was hard fought with no clear victor after the first day. Both sides had lost about 30% of their troops yet neither side was willing to give up. Numerous bodies were just laying there on the ground. "Why do these people fight so intensely for a horrible King?" Sylvia asked.
"Because they believe it is the right choice," said Romulus. "They believe in their King, much like how Garnet believes in hers."
No matter how much Garnet wanted to intervene, she could not. If she did, there was a chance that people would doubt Charles' power because it came from someone else, not from Charles himself. Garnet felt that there was also something that prevented her from interfering. It was as if the Hero System forbade her from being directly involved in an internal struggle.
At least if Charles wins, it could be the power of his leadership and his ability to guide his soldiers to victory. If someone like Garnet turned up on the battlefield and just slaughtered the troops of King Arnold, it would not be accepted as a true victory. Taking out the unseen cannons from afar was already interference to turn the tide of battle in Charles' favor.
Over the second day, Garnet could see that the troops of King Arnold were slowly being pushed back. In the distance, she saw someone, a woman with a scorpion tail that was tearing through King Arnold's front lines. King Arnold's army was also being bombarded with numerous high level spells. She focused her attention on the woman with the scorpion tail.

It was one of the people who were working with Zedd. She had joined the battle. Even if Zedd could not participate himself, he had sent Charles some help to ensure victory over King Arnold. Chances are the rest were in his army somewhere as well.
King Arnold was at a disadvantage because he had nowhere to retreat to and did not have access to supplies to feed their soldiers. After all, Zedd had cut them off from the back while they were attacked from the North by their enemies. The only thing King Arnold could do was flee South, and he was probably too stubborn to do so.
Garnet continued to watch and study the tactics that were being used from both sides. Charles was mainly using the mages on his side to force the enemy troops forward into attacking at which point his archers and front line could whittle them down before the soldiers fought, giving Charles a clear advantage. King Arnold was trying to goad Charles into a head on fight by provoking his enemy. In a head on fight, King Arnold would probably win as he had better equipped soldiers. However, Charles was the one with resources to whittle down his opponent. There was not much time left though. The soldiers of King Arnold was without food and they were taking water from the river to survive. This could not last long though. The longer they waited, the worse it would be for King Arnold.
Near the end of the second day, it finally happened. In the distance, Garnet saw a single soldier walk forward carrying a white cloth on his sword that was still in its scabbard. It was a white flag, the sign of surrender. A soldier from King Charles' side walked up to accept it. "Throw down your arms and walk away," said Charles. "Only King Arnold has to remain."
Many of the soldiers walked off, but some chose to stay. They were the ones devoted to the Gray family. They probably wanted to die with their King, so they chose to stay. After all, the victor was the one who decided what would happen to the losers. Soldiers from Charles' side tied up the people who chose to stay and marched into the city.
Garnet teleported to the throne room, where she waited for Charles to arrive with Zedd. The chair for the Queen had sat empty for many years as King Caligula never married. Charles entered the throne room with Duke Innes and Duchess Kiko by his side. Zedd stepped out of the way for Charles to approach the throne. "Welcome, King Charles," said Zedd.
Charles Wellington, now King Charles stood before the throne. Duke Innes and Duchess Kiko stepped to the side. "It's all yours," said Duke Innes. "From here on out, lead us better than King Caligula did."
"I will," said King Charles. "But first..." He walked up to Garnet and reached out his hand. "Do you accept?"
"What about Duchess Kiko?" Garnet asked.
"I've already taken care of that," said Charles. "She will take control of my old lands since I am now managing an entire country, at least until another Duke is appointed."
Garnet looked at Kiko who nodded. She was fine with this. "What about the people?" asked Garnet.
"They will learn to accept some of the changes I am making," said Charles. "After all, I plan to protect slaves as well."
"I don't know what to say," said Garnet. The whole time, she thought Duchess Kiko would become Queen. Now, Charles was offering her the position.
"Do you agree to marry me again?" asked Charles.
"Yes," said Garnet.
"Then take my hand," said Charles.
Garnet slowly reached out her hand. Charles grabbed it and pulled her along as he walked up to the throne. "You first," said Charles.
Garnet sat down on the throne meant for the Queen and looked at everyone. To her left, was Charles, who now sat as King. At the side of the King, Zedd, the Grand Wizard of Antium.

"I never thought in my life that this would happen," said Garnet. "I don't know what to do."
"That's alright," said Charles. "I'll take care of most things, but I will ask you and Zedd for advice if that's alright with you."
"That's okay," said Garnet. "You have a kingdom to build."
"So how does this work?" asked Charles. He was clueless even though he was King.
"Well, you have to decide what to do with the prisoners of war," said Zedd. "Then you have to set a policy for the kingdom along with what goals you want to pursue and present it before the nobles."
"My first order, is to put Duke Gray on trial for his crimes," said Charles.
"What are you charging him with?" asked Garnet.
"Unlawful conscription, kidnapping, and embezzlement," said Charles.
"Do you have proof of this?" asked Zedd.
"Summon Clark of the Chamber of Commerce, he will have proof," said Garnet.
"How do you know this?" asked Charles.
"I helped him find proof that Baron Gray was kidnapping people," said Garnet.
"But first, we must get you to look like a Queen," said Charles.
"What does that mean?" asked Garnet.
Garnet was provided with a wardrobe of fancy dresses. She had to straighten her hair and always hold her hands in front of her. She was not to speak until spoken to, at least in public and official meetings. They were fairly basic, but there were times when she felt like she really wanted to say something, but could not, so instead, she would whisper to Charles or Zedd and one of them would speak on her behalf.
In a few days, the nobles of Antium were convened for the crowning of the monarch. Charles looked and acted very different than he usually did, at least in public anyways. "My first order of business, is to see to it that Arnold Gray pays for his crimes," said Charles. "The people who will decide whether he is guilty or innocent, are the nobles of Antium."
The nobles immediately began to speak among themselves. "Bring forth the prisoner," said Charles. Two guards brought Arnold Gray, who was on trial. "Identify yourself."
"My name is Duke Arnold Gray of the South," said Arnold. "Formerly King Arnold of Antium."
"Clark Sung, present your evidence," said Clark.
"Yes my King," said Clark. He took out numerous papers."Here are the papers that document the expenditures of Arnold Gray. These papers show that money that should have been going to repair the East Wall four years ago disappeared." He handed them out to the nobles, but he was not done. He took out pictures. "These are photos of Baron Gray, brother of Arnold Gray, with prisoners he had taken in the cave where the nobles often send people they do not like."
"How do you plead?" Charles asked.
"Guilty," said Arnold Gray. "What do you plan to do to me?"
"I want to set an example," said Charles. "You and your family are to be stripped of your noble title and lands, Marquasette Osbourne will oversee your lands for now. I think this is a fitting punishment."
"Why don't you take my life?" asked Arnold Gray.
"I'm not a bloodthirsty tyrant," said Charles. "You abused your power as Duke to secure power and resources, so I'm taking that away from you. It seems fitting for your punishment."
"Thank you for sparing my life," said Arnold Gray who bowed before Charles. Even though Arnold Gray wanted power, he knew when he had lost and was humble in his defeat.
"Does anyone object to this decision?" asked Charles.
The nobles all talked among themselves. Gradually the voices began to disappear until it was silent. No one was in disagreement. Garnet was unsure whether they were afraid of Charles or whether they accepted the decision. Since this was Charles' first official order of business, this would set a precedent on how he is seen by others.
"Next order of business," said Charles. "We are going to be enacting reforms."
"Earl Linsey objects," said a noble.
"On what grounds?" asked Charles.
"This is a power seizure by the King to deprive the nobles of their power," said Earl Linsey.
"Is that so?" said Charles. "Well then, I want you to tell me your plan to deal with the invasion in a year."
"I don't have one," said Earl Linsey.
"Well, I have one," said Charles. "If you want to listen, then listen, if not, then I suggest you leave right now because I don't have the time to play around with children anymore. There's just over a year until next Invasion and when it comes, we must be ready."
