Soon after Riley was sent away, snow began to fall in are over Constantinople. Garnet could help but look amazed at the sight of the year's first snow. "Is it your first time seeing snow?" Serena asked.
"No," Garnet replied. "But it's the first time in a long time I've actually seen it falling."
The year's first snow marked the end of the harvest season as many crops would die. Luckily, they did not have that problem in Constantinople as there were no farms yet. The problems that Constantinople always had to face was outside threats. Those threats right now were people still trying to raid the city, Dark Mages, and a potential attack by a coalition led by Anzio. All of these could be defeated by sufficient manpower, but with only a thousand automata, a few hundred summons, and a dozen spirits, it was impossible to cover the massive city.
Garnet had done her best to train with Zedd every day, who often held back so that Garnet could face an opponent of similar strength. Zedd always had new tricks, allowing Garnet to fight against numerous different styles. During her free time, she would create as many Revenants as she could with her vessels. It allowed her to greatly expand their numbers. The problem was that people were not being caught by the Revenants, meaning that they could not take people for their abilities.
New Skill: Instance Dungeon Creation (Level 1)
Allows you to create a temporary pocket dimension where you can fight past enemies you have encountered. Higher levels distort time, resulting in less time passing in the real world than in the pocket dimension.
MP Cost: 10000
"Train me," Garnet asked of Zedd.
"In what?" Zedd asked.
"Combat against different kinds of mages," Garnet answered. "I encountered a woman who could transform parts of her body and a man who was able to transform into a dragon by injecting himself with some type of liquid."
"You encountered members of the Dark Mage Guild didn't you?" Zedd asked.
"Yes," said Garnet. "That woman was faster than my lightning bolts. If I was alone, I don't think I could have won."
"You'll need to prepare mana potions for me then," said Zedd. "Unlike you, I cannot recover as quickly."
"Already done," said Garnet as she stacked the mana potions that she had along with others that she made using the materials she found around the city.
Zedd had shown Garnet three types of mages that most fell under. The most common and weakest form is the Elemental Mage. One that stands back and attacks from a distance. They used their allies to provide cover in order to give them time to prepare large and powerful spells. This was the most common type in the Western part of the world and Zedd fell into this category most of the time.
The second type was a Battle Mage. Garnet fit under this category. Battle Mages were mages that fought primarily at close range or mid-range. They had high physical prowess in addition to high magical attack. They could work alone or in groups.
The third type was Warrior Mages. Anna fit into this category. These were people who primarily trained as fighters, but developed magic later on. They eventually added the magic they developed into their physical skills, creating elemental based attacks. This was the most common type in the Eastern part of the world.
"Which one is superior?" Garnet asked.
"None of them are," said Zedd. "Each one has their own advantages though the weakest tend to be Elemental since they are terrible at up close combat. Once an Elemental Mage becomes stronger, you can cover for your weakness by training to fight up close as well in order to move into the Battle Mage category. However, a skilled Elemental Mage would be able to take you out before you even get close and would use their abilities to keep you away until you were dead."
Zedd would simulate each of the different types of mages for Garnet to fight against. Elemental Mages that used all the basic elements of earth, fire, wind, and water. Battle Mages like himself who would combine a sword with close ranged use of magic. Warrior Mages that used elemental strikes. Zedd proved to be proficient in all types.

In a short amount of time, Garnet had raised her stats by several levels worth. Afterwards, she would go to her own Instance Dungeon and train in there as well. The powerful creatures she saw in Zedd's Instance Dungeon appeared in her own along with the ones she encountered. There were everything from boars to dragons to spirits. Leveling up this way was slow, but it also gave Garnet time to hone her skills in fairly safe circumstances.

There was a noticeable difference between her own training and training with Zedd. But, none of it compared to actual combat. That was the one that gave the most stats and skills.
A few days later, the snow began to turn into a blizzard. "Is it normally this intense?" Garnet asked.
"No," said Serena. "The winds outside are blowing at a different speed than the ones inside the city."
Quest Update: Dark Mages (II)
Four Dark Mage Council members and an unknown number of their group are using the area around Constantinople in order to search for two Dark Mages they believe are going against their objective. Stop the Dark Mage Council before Constantinople is destroyed.
Reward: Experience
"That's because someone is intentionally causing this," Garnet informed Serena. "I'm going to put together a group to try to find out what's going on."
Garnet gathered her spirits, about a dozen Cerberus, and a dozen Revenants. The rest were to remain to protect the city. Raphael could continue to summon Revenants into the vessels made by Adam. Nyx help Nian to search the city because Nyx was better at hiding and harder to detect than Nian.
Garnet could see that her Map showed the destination. A giant "!" marked on the map showed that slightly to the North, there was something there. "We're heading north," Garnet informed her group.
"Are we going to that mountain again?" asked Meliae.
"No," Garnet replied. "Our destination is only about a quarter of the way towards the mountain, it's fairly close to the city. Any other questions?"
There were none. "Alright, let's go," said Garnet. The Revenants and Cerberus led the front of the group. The spirits protected the sides and the back with Garnet in the middle.
The blizzard limited their vision and because it was not something caused by darkness or the lack of light, she was unable to see through it. Riley would have been able to see through it with her ability to sense things.
There were no problems as the group approached their destination. When they arrived at the designated location, there was nothing on the map. "Are you sure we're in the right place?" Nuria asked.
"Yes," said Garnet. "That's what the map says."
The blizzard here was slightly weaker than the other spots. But as Garnet looked around, she could not see anything. "It doesn't feel strange either," said Mazu.
Garnet focused. She heard a voice. "In the cold night…"
It was someone singing. "The moonlight shines…"
It was in a different language. "Do you hear that singing?" Garnet asked.
"Which way is it coming from?" Sino asked.
Garnet focused, but could not tell. "I can't tell," Garnet replied. "It's almost as if it's on top of us," she said as she looked up.
Above them, she saw a large blue ball of light that floated high in the sky. It was not the sun or a magic spell that was flying towards them. It was just floating up there in the sky. At regular intervals, the shine of it grew brighter. "Lightning Fire Bolt!"
Garnet fired the bolt at the ball of light in the sky. PING. It was deflected right off the ball, as if it was protected by the barrier. "It looks like we have to stop the source," said Meliae.
UHH. It was the sound of groaning. As Garnet turned to face it, she saw undead approaching them.
Name: Ghoul
Level: 30
Class: Undead
Sub-Class: None
Stats: High Vitality
As they approached, Garnet saw that they were much larger in number. The blizzard limited their vision and as a result, the massive number of ghouls could be hidden in the snow. "Let's get rid of them," said Garnet. "Fire Ball!"
BOOM. A single explosion ignited numerous ghouls and the fire took out many of them. The Cerberus lined themselves in a wall. The spirits bombarded the back lines with various elements while the Cerberus would spit fire if any of the ghouls got close. When the last one fell, Garnet watched as the bodies shattered and disappeared, keeping an eye out for their summoner. "Anyone here?" Garnet asked one of the Cerberus.
WHINE. The Cerberus whimpered as it held its nose. It seemed like it did not know. "Anything strange?" Garnet asked Meliae.
"No," Meliae replied. "The only thing unnatural here is the movement of the blizzard. I can't tell you anything else about it."
A single robed figure began to approach them. As they came into view, Garnet recognized the person as Crossen. "I was wondering when you'd show up," he said.
"You really seem to want this fight," said Garnet.
"I'm not the one who wants it, but I'm the one who has to take part in it," said Crossen. "Recall!"
Leilah appeared as she made a mad dash for Garnet. THUMP. One of the Cerberus head butted Leilah, pushing her back. "What?!?" she cried as she was surprised that they could keep up with her speed.
The Cerberus were even stronger than before. Whereas before Leilah and even members of the Grey Ghosts could knock them aside or deal lethal strikes to them, their power increased with Garnet's own, allowing them to now hold their own. "I've been making myself stronger to prepare against you guys," Garnet explained.
TSK. Crossen grunted. "Recall!" He began to recall other summons to the battle. There were likely others that he and the other Dark Mages had summoned before and they were now calling them out to the battlefield. The troll and the Cerberus that he had with him the last time they fought appeared.
ROAR. Crossen's own Cerberus was larger and had three heads. It was much more fearsome than a single headed one as it could combat multiple enemies with ease. The troll swung its club at Garnet's Cerberus, keeping them away. "Leilah, fall back!" Crossen ordered.
"Flight!" Garnet opened her wings so she would be able to instantly create distance if needed.
"Magma Cannon!" Crossen fired a molten rock enhanced with flames. "I'm not the same as before," said Crossen. "I can use more dual element spells just like you now!"
Crossen misunderstood Garnet's abilities, but that was to her advantage. Garnet's Lightning Fire was deceiving as it called out only two elements, but was actually composed of three. "Lightning Fire Bolt!"
BOOM. The explosion was not from the sound of the two bolts colliding, but rather from Garnet's Lightning Fire Bolt shattering Crossen's Magma Cannon. BOOM. A second explosion followed as Garnet's Lightning Fire Bolt struck the ground near Crossen, forcing him back.
That was when a second figure appeared. A man dressed in leather and cloth.
Name: Zack
Level: 40
Class: Metal Mage
Sub-Class: Summoner
Stats: High Intelligence
The man clapped his hands together. "Binding Cage!"
Black iron bars appeared from his hands and wrapped around Garnet. Meliae wrapped her roots around them. CLANG. The metal bars shattered to pieces and returned to black dust. "It doesn't look like this will be easy," said Zack.
"Why do you think Xiaomei took so many of us?" said Crossen. "She is not an easy target."
"Are we not investing too many resources into this?" Zack asked.
"Do you dare to question the Chancellor?" said Crossen.
"No," said Zack. "He's kept us safe for so many years."
There was now another mage with different abilities. Chances are there were more and were quickly approaching. "We have to take out one of them fast," said Garnet.
"Call: Lava Golem!" Crossen summoned another creature composed of fire and rock. Its chest glowed orange and the liquid from it flowed throughout its body. Steam rose from its body as snow came into contact with it.
Sino quickly reacted to it. "Icicle!" CHING. A large spear of ice pierced the body of the golem, returning it to stone as it fell over and shattered onto the ground.
"We won't be able to hold on much longer," said Crossen.
"Stick to the plan," Zack replied. "Just a little longer."
"Recall!" Crossen called forth the Dullahan.
The undead knight made its way straight for Garnet's group. NEIGH. The undead horse spat purple flames out of its mouth as it approached. If Garnet had not seen the things in Zedd's Instance Dungeon, this might have been a terrifying sight.
Sino released a burst of wind, throwing the Dullahan off balance. Behind the Dullahan was Leilah, who had used the Dullahan and the snow as cover as she ran towards one of the Revenants shielding Garnet. There was a grin on her face.
BANG. Leilah struck the Revenant in the chest, but she was surprised. The Revenant was down, but it grabbed onto Leilah's hand and pulled Leilah down with it as well. The Revenant tried to absorb Leilah's hand into itself. "Help me Master!" she cried.
"Recall!" Leilah instantly reappeared next to Crossen, but her hand was already gone. The Revenant had it now.
"Don't touch those things," Leilah warned as her own hand regrew.
"Blade Forge!" Zack created swords that floated in the air and threw them at Garnet. It was a spell similar to Icicle, but with metal instead of ice. He threw the swords towards Garnet.
Garnet dodged to the side. CLANG. However, the blades never passed by her. The Revenant had caught it with its hands. "Impossible!" Zack shouted.
When Garnet focused her attention on Zack and Crossen again, she spotted a huge mountain of snow behind them moving. "Move it!" shouted someone.
Zack and Crossen dodged to the side as the snow moved forward and changed its shape into like a wave. Someone was riding on the snow and he turned his attention to Garnet.
Name: Percy
Level: 67
Class: Blue Mage
Sub-Class: Spear Master
Stats: High Agility
The man had short black hair and wore white and blue leather armor with lots of padding on it. In his arm was a golden trident. Percy quickly approached Garnet, using the snow to push aside Garnet's summons, scattering them. The snow brought by Percy contained numerous different undead creatures in it and they scattered themselves all throughout the battlefield, forcing Garnet's own summons and spirits to fight them or risk being surrounded by them. In an instant, Percy had evened out the battle with his reinforcements.
As Percy aimed straight for Garnet, she flew straight up and aimed downwards. "Heat Wave!" The blast of hot air instantly melted the snow beneath Percy's feet. THUD. Percy landed on his feet.
The snow quickly filled the ground again as Percy gathered the snow under him again. "Why didn't you tell us about that spell?" Percy shouted angrily at Crossen.
"I thought it was just a wind spell," said Crossen. "I had no idea that it was a fire spell as well."
Garnet realized that Crossen had not told them everything about her. She had used the spell against Crossen, but Crossen did not inform them, so they were fighting blind and cautiously as well. The longer it would take her, the more enemies would appear. She had to work fast to take out some of them. The weakest were Zack and Crossen, so they could be taken care of more easily.
"Go Cerberus, kill those two," Garnet ordered pointing to Crossen and Zack.
The dozen Cerberus all immediately began to rush towards the two from different angles. "Protect me!" Crossen ordered his Three Headed Cerberus.
The Three Headed Cerberus was already weakened from clashing with Garnet's Cerberus earlier. The bites from Garnet's Cerberus were poisonous thanks to the snake abilities on them and the Three Headed Cerberus had slowed down. While the two were distracted, Garnet could focus her attention on Percy. "I see now why you would be a problem," said Percy.
"Why do you want me dead?" Garnet asked.
"If you join us, then we don’t have to kill you," said Percy as he began to circle Garnet on his snow. He was preparing to attack depending on Garnet's answer.
"I refuse," said Garnet.
"Did you even hear our offer?" Percy asked.
"What offer?" Garnet asked. "I heard from Crossen that the Council wanted to invite me."
SIGH. Percy put his fingers to his forehead realizing that Crossen did not even properly explain the offer. "If you keep quiet and follow our orders, we won't have to kill you," Percy explained.
"Sorry, but I refuse," Garnet replied. "I have my own goals. But I will not mention the Dark Mages to anyone if you leave immediately."
"That's not my decision to make," said Percy as he began to raise the snow behind him. "Avalanche!"
The snow fell as a wave towards Garnet, forcing Garnet to move backwards and upwards. Percy took advantage of the movement of the snow, using it to quickly propel himself towards Garnet. He pulled a clear blue spear made of ice out of the snow. "I got you now!" he shouted with a smile on his face as he aimed the blue spear and trident that he had straight at Garnet.
"Sonic Scream!" SCREECH. Garnet's cry caused Percy to instantly lose his concentration as he was forced to cover his ears. Again, the snow under his feet broke apart and he fell to the ground. Percy's weakness was that he had to get in close to strike Garnet, leaving himself open to attacks that wither affected his snow or were usable at close range with little warning.

Leilah quickly snatched up Percy in order to not give Garnet the chance for a killing blow. "Now!" she shouted.
The chill suddenly grew greater as the blue ball in the sky began to spin. THWISH. TWISH. It was the sound of numerous arrows firing.
"Incinerate!" Garnet fired the beam of flames straight towards the blue ball in the sky. However, its spinning deflected the flames and it continued to rain arrows in every direction except for the flames towards Garnet.
Garnet was unable to stop the spell. She needed to stop it at its source. "Transformation: Queen of the Night!" With her transformation, Garnet received a massive burst of speed, allowing her to catch up to Crossen and Zack who were falling back after being injured.
CRASH. The large ball in the sky scattered as it turned to snow. The blizzard stopped as well. Garnet saw the other mages in in the distance. Xiaomei stood there in front of a woman in a red and black robe. The top half resembled a dress. In the air behind the woman were several huge red magic circles that were spinning. Next to Xiaomei was another man in black cloth armor lined with white fur.
Name: Adria
Level: 68
Class: Song Mage
Sub-Class: Summoner
Stats: High Intelligence
"It failed," said Adria.
"That's fine," Xiaomei said to comfort Adria. "It's not worth killing our own allies for it."
"All three of us should attack her at once," said the man next to Xiaomei.
Name: Quinton
Level: 69
Class: Centurion Mage
Sub-Class: Dark Mage
Stats: High Intelligence
"Remember not to hit each other," said Xiaomei as she stepped forward.
The three of them were all going to fight Garnet at once. "Recall!" Garnet recalled all of her summons.
A different song started as a white ball of light floated above Adria. The magic circles that floated behind her accelerated and began to spin faster.
Quinton reached his hand into the ground and pulled up a black sword made of stone in one hand. "One Handed Sword Style: Defense of the Great Buddha!" He projected an aura of warmth from his body. He then reached inside his chest and pulled out a red sword that seemed to be made of his own blood. "Two Sword Style: Last Battalion!" That aura of warmth suddenly transformed into one of coldness.
"Transformation: Monarch Butterfly!" Xiaomei's skin cracked with green as what appeared to be scales formed over her body.
Garnet could tell that Xiaomei was not being serious the last time they fought. Their first encounter was more likely an attempt to collect information, which was why she retreated so quickly. The scales on Xiaomei were slowly falling. "You're going to need to hurry if you want to kill me before your scales fall off," Garnet taunted as she drew her own sword.
Quinton dashed towards Garnet, leading with his black sword. "One Handed Sword Style: Earthly Smash!"
BOOM. Garnet flew backwards, dodging out of the way. Quinton's attack knocked numerous rocks into the air. "Sparrow Slash!" Xiaomei followed up with her own sword swing. FWOOSH. The swing of the sword launched a powerful gust of wind, sending the rocks knocked up flying at Garnet with incredible speed.
"Heat Wave!" Garnet released her own burst of wind to push the rocks back, causing them to fall halfway between them.
"Do you know how many elements she possesses?" Quinton asked.
"At least four," Xiaomei replied.
"That spell was at least two," Quinton observed.
Garnet took a quick look to her sides as the two mages in front of her spoke. The summons brought by Percy were gradually being overwhelmed by Garnet's. She just had to hold on until her own summons made their way through them so that they could support Garnet. There was still something about the third mage behind them who was doing nothing, but singing. The white ball of light in the sky was not doing anything that she could notice. She needed to buy time for her summons.
Quinton continued his assault. "Earth Spike!" A large chunk of rock popped up from the ground and straight at Garnet's location. Without waiting to see if the spell connected, he followed it up. "Blood Burst!" A splash of red liquid burst from the rocks, scattering it all in Garnet's direction.
Garnet quickly flew upwards to escape the range of it. "Incinerate!" The intense beam of fire ate through the dirt and turned the place that Quinton was standing on into glowing orange rock.
"Poison Needle!" Xiaomei launched ten small needles from her fingers towards Garnet.
"Ki Burst!" Garnet pushed the needles away from her and watched as they fell into the ground.
"Why do you want me dead?" Garnet asked. "Is it just because I don't want to join your club?"
"Does she not know?" Quinton asked.
"Did Crossen not explain it to you?" Xiaomei asked.
"He only said to join or die," Garnet replied.
"The existence of Dark Mages must remain hidden," Xiaomei explained. "If word were to get out, we may be hunted out of existence once again."
Garnet had heard a little about what happened to Dark Mages, but he never specified what happened. "I have not revealed to anyone other than my teacher that I am a Dark Mage," Garnet replied. "He has not told anyone either. The only ones who might know are the Grey Ghosts, but they have not made a move since their last attempt to chase me."
The expression on Xiaomei's face suddenly changed when Garnet made that statement. "Doesn't that make this fight pointless?" Adria asked as she stopped her singing. The ball of light remained floating above in the sky.
"That idiot," said Xiaomei as she shook her head. "All of this could have been avoided if he explained it in detail. What a waste of resources."
Xiaomei lowered her weapon. "Stop fighting right now!" she shouted. All of the summons stopped in their place. She walked a few steps closer to Garnet. "I just want to talk," she said.
Garnet lowered her guard just a little, but kept her eye on the other two. "Just you," Garnet warned.
Adria and Quinton stepped back, but Quinton kept his swords drawn and Adria kept the ball of light active. "Do you know what happened to the Dark Mages?" Xiaomei asked.
"I know they were persecuted," said Garnet.
"The cause of their persecution was because of a few mages who were carrying out human experiments, but they weren't all Dark Mages," said Xiaomei. "People used that opportunity to hunt down mages that disagreed with them."
Garnet knew that this happened before. If someone went missing, they were often captured into slavery to be sold. After all, no one would notice if poor and homeless people went missing. Some people were sold as servants, some into prostitution, and some just flat out disappeared. The only person she knew of that actually carried out these experiments were Zedd.
"What is the fight over then?" Garnet questioned.
"It was whether mages should be required to serve their rulers," Xiaomei answered. "Those of us that disagreed were the ones hunted and became the modern Dark Mages."
"What is a Dark Mage then?" Garnet asked.
"A Dark Mage is anyone who looks for different ways to empower themselves," Xiaomei explained. She revealed a mark on her arm with two holes in it. "I drain the venom of different creatures into my body to create a unique poison. Many of us are willing to give up something for the power we need to fight against those who would hunt us."
Garnet realized it was different from a true Dark Mage, which is why only a few people in the group of Dark Mages actually had Dark Mage listed as a class. Many of them had other things as their class or sub-class instead. "What does this have to do with me?" Garnet asked.
"You must have exhumed numerous bodies to create your summons," said Xiaomei. "Someone is bound to find out."
"I did no such thing," said Garnet. "Call: Death Knight!" An undead knight appeared. "I don't need any bodies."
"What about those?" Xiaomei asked as she pointed to the Revenants as she looked on with surprise.
"Human Form Vessels," said Garnet.
"Where's your tome?" Xiaomei asked.
"What tome?" Garnet asked.
"You can use such spells without a tome?!?" said Xiaomei who was surprised by this information. "You should have a book like this," she said as she took out Crossen's book.
"I learned to make it as a spell," Garnet replied. "Once I acquired the mana to do so, I immediately began to work on building my own force."
"So that's why no one recognizes your name or knows of your existence," Xiaomei said to herself.
"I don't know why you're so surprised," said Garnet. "Only the weakest of mages need magic circles to use magic and even stronger mages can cast lower end spells without the need to draw them. On top of that, you are creating dozens of summoned creatures yourself."
"There are limits to our summons," said Xiaomei. "Even though we can command armies, it is not easy to acquire the materials to create vessels nor summon high level undead. You seemed to have summoned many high level ones without either requirements."
"It's a special skill I have that lets me manage them," Garnet replied. She did not want to reveal any more than she had to. Talking to Xiaomei seemed to be reducing the tension and it was likely that Garnet could end the fight without needing to actually fight if Xiaomei was only after information.
"If you do not reveal your status as a Dark Mage to others and join us, we will retreat," said Xiaomei. "Do you accept?"
"I refuse to work with you," said Garnet.
Xiaomei thought about it for a moment as she scratched her head. "Fine," she said as she took out a black, red, and gold ring. "Alternate deal, keep this on you and reply when the call is made."
"No!" shouted Quinton as he raised his swords. "You cannot do that without the approval of the Chancellor."
"I'm the one he put in charge!" Xiaomei countered.
Quinton immediately backed down. "Sorry," he replied as he lowered his swords.
"My duty is to either stop you or get you to ally with us by any means necessary," said Xiaomei.
"What is the call?" Garnet questioned.
"The call will be made the day that a crusade against us is announced, Xiaomei replied. "It might not happen tomorrow, but it will happen again someday when we are discovered. When that happens, you must stand with us against whoever is trying to eradicate us."
"What if I need help?" Garnet asked.
"If you want help, you will have to speak with the Chancellor," said Xiaomei. "Only he can label you as someone who is important enough to be protected."
Garnet thought about it. If any trouble arose, then she could just use Teleport to escape. "Bring me to him then," said Garnet. If she could convince the Chancellor to protect her, then she would not have to deal with the forces of Anzio or the Coalition Army by herself.
"I will wait for you in three days outside of the Western Walls of your city," said Xiaomei. "If you do not appear, it means you declined and we will likely fight once more."
