Garnet had brought the Cerberus that was poisoned by Xiaomei back to Zedd, hoping that he could identify what it was. Zedd had not made any progress with the Mana Core, reinforcing the idea that it needed to be upgraded before the hidden rooms might reveal themselves. "So, what happened to it?" Garnet asked.
"Your Cerberus was stopped with a poison that blocks the flow of mana," said Zedd. "It will be fine once the blockage clears."
Garnet's body protected her from most poisons, so even something that is deadly at most makes her weak for a while. It was one of the advantages of her unique physiology. Nonetheless, it was something that might weaken her long enough for someone to kill her. With another threat looming over her and the city of Constantinople, she needed to become stronger and she needed that strength quickly.
"I need to add her abilities to one of my Revenants," Garnet thought. Xiaomei was incredibly fast. She sacrificed strength for speed, but using the powerful poison could make up for it since it could probably kill with no more than two hits. The first to immobilize, the second to kill. Adding Crossen's abilities to one of her Revenants would be great as well.
There was one thing that remained in Garnet's mind though. Crossen mentioned the Dark Mage Guild. Both Crossen and Xiaomei referred to themselves as "we" and "our," referencing a larger group. Chances were that there was going to be more than two of them out to capture or kill her. They also had the means to summon much stronger creatures as well, not just undead anymore. The current combat ability of her enemy was very high, yet also unknown.
For now, Garnet decided to focus on developing the automata. A thousand potential soldiers to add to her ranks. The goal was Hihi'irokane, a mysterious red ore that is rarely found on the top of the highest mountains. The tallest mountain around Constantinople was directly to the North. A part of the mountain extended above the clouds. That was going to be the destination. "Can you take care of things while I am gone?" Garnet asked Serena.
"Where are you going?" Serena asked.
"To the mountain in the North to look for Hihi'irokane," Garnet responded. "I need it to make improvements to the automata."
New Quest: Search for Hihi'irokane (I)
Ascend Mount Ararat.
Reward: Experience
"Don't go to Mount Ararat alone," said Serena. "There still may be creatures from the past Invasion up there."
"I'm not going alone," said Garnet. "Riley, you're coming with."
"Aren't Serena and Nian stronger?" Riley asked. "You should get them instead."
"They're better with protecting the city than you are," said Garnet. "I'm brining you along with some Cerberus."
The power of the Cerberus and the Death Knights were declining in relation to the other summons, but they were by no means weak. Against regular enemies they encountered, they could easily overpower their enemies. They were not effective against the strongest people because they had ways to deal with creatures like the Cerberus. People had fewer ways to deal with creatures like Revenants that could pass through walls.
Garnet and Riley headed North, where there was no road. Luckily, the tall mountain was easy to spot and so was Constantinople. It was going to be easy to find their way back and impossible to get lost until they got above the clouds. "Flight!" Garnet activated her flight ability, but kept close to the ground in order to cover ground faster. She wanted to go higher up, but she remembered the large bird she saw when she was rushing to Constantinople. She was not confident in dealing with creatures like that yet. After all, the Three Headed Cerberus took many people to defeat and the Zmaj nearly killed her.
There were very few creatures on the way to the mountain. There were mostly birds in the region surrounding Constantinople. Everything from ducks, geese, vultures, and pelicans even. There were no large creatures other than the one that Garnet saw above the clouds. Most of the animals were small as well with the largest being a tiger that was eating a goat. "Please let there be nothing large and terrifying," she thought to herself.
The base of the mountain was already problematic, with three mountain trails that split off near the entrance. There were no guiding signs. "Which way?" Riley asked.
"Can you sense anything?" Garnet asked.
"There's something at the top, but I don't know which way is to the top," she said.
"Cerberus?" Garnet asked.
The Cerberus sniffed around and along all three paths. They shook their heads. They had no clue either. "Recall!" Garnet recalled Meliae to help.
"What am I looking for now?" Meliae asked. Meliae knew exactly what Garnet wanted.
"Any strong source of mana or something strange," said Garnet.
"Everything feels the same here," said Meliae.
"What do you mean?" Garnet asked.
"Normally, there's differences, like a stronger source of mana here, or an odd feeling of a chill there, but everything is exactly the same here," said Meliae. "It's as if it is the same from the top to the bottom."
"That's strange," said Garnet.
"It is," said Meliae. "Chances are, someone is purposely creating this."
They were of no help to Garnet, so she decided to try something different. "Each one of you take a different path," Garnet ordered her Cerberus. "Return if you reach a dead end." Chances were that the one where they did not return was going to be the longest path and the path to the top.
Three of the Cerberus headed off on their separate routes. The first one to return was the one that went down the middle path. It returned with a bone in its mouth. "A bone?" said Garnet. "Why did it bring a bone back?"
"What kind of bone is it?" Riley asked.
"I'm not sure," said Garnet. "Do you know?" Garnet asked as she turned to Meliae.
"It looks human, but it isn't," Meliae replied. "It looks old as well."
"Can you tell how old?" Garnet asked.
"No," said Meliae.
The next one to return was the Cerberus that went down the left path. That meant the one on the right path was going to be the longest and probably the way to the top. "Recall!" Garnet recalled the last Cerberus as they all headed down the right path together.
"Why don't you just fly?" Meliae asked.
"I don't want to be spotted by any dragon in a cave," Garnet replied. "I want to be able to see the creature first so I can kill it before it sees me. In the worst case scenario, all the aggressive creatures will chase after me."
"Fair enough," said Meliae.
Part of the way up the mountain, they saw bones scattered among what looked like a camp site. "It looks like a lot of people died here a long time ago," said Garnet.
Riley headed over to the scorch mark on the ground. "This isn't a fire pit of anykind," she said. "It almost looks like it was burned by something else."
"It looks like they were attacked," said Meliae.
"By what?" Garnet asked.
"I don't know," said Meliae. "But it looks like it was a surprise attack."
Garnet headed over to Meliae and saw that there were holes in the ground. The area was cleaned up a little, but not entirely, so marks left by their battle still remained in some spots. "I found something!" Riley shouted.
Garnet and Meliae headed over. They saw a small bone arrowhead. "A bone arrow?" said Garnet.
"Looks like it," said Riley. "All we keep finding are bones."
"But it's clear now that there was at least a fight here in the past," said Garnet. "We should be wary of any enemies as we climb the mountain."
As the group headed further into the mountain, they spotted a cave that split off from the main road. "Which way?" Riley asked.
"Let's check the cave first," said Garnet. "I found both Sino and Meliae in different caves."
The group turned towards the cave. It was extremely large and hollowed out. There was nothing inside, just a huge patch of yellowish red dirt on the ground. "There's nothing here," said Garnet.
"Wait," said Meliae. "There's something strange here. This isn't dirt."
"What is it then?" Riley asked.
"I think it's bone," said Meliae.
"Bone?!?" said Garnet surprised. "All of this dirt is bone?"
"Mostly bone," said Meliae. "There is some dirt here, but not all of it is dirt."
"Why is there so much bone here?" Garnet wondered.
The ground began to shake. VWOOM. A large yellowish white colored bone appeared from the dirt. VWOOM. Hundreds of smaller pieces followed and they made their way to the first yellowish white bone. BANG. The pieces snapped together as if they were parts in some kind of puzzle. Its large head had jaws that made it look like an insect. It had two large arms with hands. The rest of its body resembled a centipede of some kind.
Name: Spectre
Level: 60
Class: Undead
Sub-Class: None
Stats: High Strength, High Vitality
The creature reached to its back and pulled out a long stick. The stick then opened up, with the blade of a scythe appearing. The scythe was big enough to reach almost anything in the cave. It used its tail to block off the entrance into the cave. It was almost as if the creature was designed to fight in the cave. "Was this Crossen's trap?" Garnet thought.
For now, she would have to focus on the target in front of them. "What the heck is that thing?!?" Riley shouted.
"It's an undead of some kind," Meliae answered.
"I know that much," said Riley.
The entire body of the Spectre rotated around the room in order to reposition the torso for an attack. The soft ground composed of a mix of bone meal and soft dirt prevented it from making much noise. It swung the scythe at the group. Garnet raised her sword and pushed at the scythe.
CLANG. The bone scythe that the Spectre was using was as hard as her own sword. To top it off, she alone was not strong enough to stop it. The Spectre continued to push and without solid ground it was difficult to push against it. Garnet was slowly being pushed back.
CLANG. Riley made it as well and joined Garnet in the push against the Spectre's scythe. "We're at a disadvantage here," she said.
"It's not like we can force ourselves out of here without collapsing the entire cave," said Garnet.
BANG. The Cerberus crashed themselves against the main body of the Spectre, slightly tipping it off balance. "Horizontal!" Garnet used her sword skill to push the scythe off of her and it created an opening.
"Jet Stream!" Garnet fired a stream of water against the main body of the Spectre.
However, the Spectre was starting to resist. The Cerberus knocked it off balance for a second, but the pressure of the water was not enough to keep it down. Fire was too dangerous to use in the enclosed space and lightning probably would not work since it did not have muscles and Garnet's own lightning magic was not strong enough to completely immobilize a target. It was down to either wind magic or shadow magic.
The scythe of the Spectre descended upon them again with another swipe that was meant to clear the room. Garnet swung her sword towards the scythe, meeting it head on.
CLANG. Again, the scythe made contact with Garnet's sword and it slowly pushed her back. Garnet raised her. "Explosive Palm!"
BOOM. The explosive force knocked the scythe off target and causing it to crash into the ground. Riley followed up on it. "Ki Burst!"
BOOM. The explosive force of the attack pushed the scythe down, embedding it deep into the ground below the dust that they were standing on. "Careful!" Garnet shouted.
The cave shook a little and a few small rocks fell. A storng enough blast could potentially cause the entire cave to collapse. They were lucky that it did not.
Meliae used her roots and did her best to tie up some of the Spectre's legs, slowing it down, and causing its steps to clumsy. Neither of these slowed the Spectre down as the Spectre continued its assault with its hands.
It slammed its hand down towards Riley. "Flight!" Riley used her wings to move sideways. BANG. The bone hand smashed into the ground, knocking up the dust.
SWISH. The arm moved sideways, throwing up the dust into the air. CLANG. Riley used her sword and smashed it against the arm of the Spectre as hard as she could.
Garnet followed it up. "Wind Blade!" The powerful burst of air dug into some of the bone, but it was not a clean cut. The burst of wind knocked a huge amount of dust into the air.
The Specter moved its body and positioned its back farthest away from the cave. An orange light appeared in its mouth. "It's about to use fire!" Riley shouted.
This was the trap. The dust in the air would increase the explosive power and make it easier to ignite the materials. Both Garnet and Riley reacted to this immediately. "Heat Wave!"
While the spell itself would not be effective against the Spectre, the wind released by the spell would push all the dust particles back towards the Spectre. BOOM. The explosive power released by the spell and the combination of the environment was devastating.
"Shadow Wall!" Garnet used the spell in order to protect them from the potential effects. As the spell ended, the Spectre had severely damaged itself, with cracks all over its main body. But, it was not down yet. The body continued to move.
"Still?!?" said Riley. "Why won't you die already?!?" she shouted.
The superheated bones of the Spectre made it dangerous to touch. "Jet Stream!" Garnet fired water at the Spectre again. CRACK. The superheated bones of the Spectre began to break apart from the rapid cooling. The cracks on the body of the Spectre began to intensify.
BOOM. Part of the torso broke off of the body. "Heat it again!" Garnet shouted.
"Heat Wave!" Riley released another one in order to heat the body of the Spectre again. CRACK. Another part of the torso began to break apart. Slowly, it stopped moving.
"Is it down yet?" Garnet asked.
"You always have to double check to make sure it is dead," said Riley.
Garnet slowly walked up to the head. "Explosive Palm!" BOOM. The head of the Spectre shattered.
You have leveled up!
"It's dead now," said Garnet. "Blood Absorption!" It did not work. The Spectre was made of bones and did not have blood or muscle to be absorbed, but Garnet had to at least try it. It would have made it easier to escape as well.
"Let's rest here for now," said Riley.
"I agree, it's best not to continue in the dark," said Garnet. "I might be able to see in the dark, but it still allows people with special skills to move around undetected at night." The assassin that she fought recently came to mind.
With their current location, if anyone wanted to attack them, they would have to enter through the entrance to the cave. As creepy as it was to be sleeping on ground up bones, it was better than trying to move up or down the mountain.
At the crack of dawn, the group continued their march up. Sleeping on the soft dirt and bone mix was not as bad as sleeping on rocks. "I hope the victims here don't come to haunt us," said Riley.
"They should be grateful that we killed that monster for them," said Garnet. "If anything, they should be thanking us for getting revenge for them."
"I wouldn't count on it," said Riley. "It's bad luck to sleep in a cemetary."
"Everything is bad luck according to someone somewhere," Garnet argued. "I should have over a thousand years' worth at this point for all the things I've done. I basically just desecrated a graveyard if you think about it. That should be an eternity of bad luck by any measurement."
"Enough, let's go!" said Meliae.
"Alright," said Garnet as she headed out the cave.
They were barely a third of the way up the mountain. There was always going to be the potential for more traps and more problems. "Scout ahead," Garnet ordered her Cerberus.
"Is something wrong?" Riley asked.
"The strange feeling of this place and the undead skeleton we encountered made me suspicious," Garnet replied.
"An undead creature like that must have been created by someone right?" said Riley.
"Yes," said Garnet. "Do you think it's Crossen and Xiaoming?"
"It's possible," said Riley. "Is there any other reason why it might happen?"
"I heard stories about malice being gathered and given form to, but that is largely used as a story to scare children into not messing around a graveyard," said Garnet.
"Who else might do something like this?" Riley asked.
Garnet had to think about it for a moment. "Maybe someone in the Grey Ghosts?"
The Grey Ghosts had not been seen for a long time. Ever since their failure to capture Garnet in Constantinople, a majority of them disappeared. If they were preparing for something, Mount Ararat was not too far from Constantinople and could be used as a gathering point of some kind. "What else could it be?" Riley asked.
"I don't know," said Garnet. "This whole place feels wrong."
"I agree," said Meliae. "Mana should be unevenly distributed in an area and should have the presence of different elements. Here, it feels like everything has been mixed together, as if everything is the same."
"Is that why you cannot sense anything?" Garnet asked Riley.
"I don't know," Riley answered. "I can feel the presence of people normally, but it feels like there's nothing here to me."
"Whatever this mountain is, it is definitely strange," said Garnet. "There's no wildlife past the base of the mountain."
"There's only been some plants and trees," Meliae added.
Unauthorized duplication: this tale has been taken without consent. Report sightings.
The last time there was a lack of wildlife was because there was actually a plague spreading. "Is it poisonous?" Garnet asked.
"No," said Meliae. "It's just uniform mana, as if someone purposely shaped it like this."
"I'm certain that there's someone here," said Garnet. "They're using the mana to hide their presence, but even they cannot trick the senses of most animals."
As the group headed further up the mountain, the amount of plants significant decreased, eventually disappearing altogether. The rocks turned from brown to grey and there was no sign of snow despite the cold weather. "There is definitely something wrong here," said Meliae. "There should still be signs of plant life at this height.
"Do you know what's wrong?" Garnet asked.
"The ground itself is corrupted," said Meliae. "It's as if the ground was being poisoned by something."
"Is it Crossen?" Garnet asked.
"No," Meliae responded as she shook her head. "Corruption is different from poison. It's like as if undead recently rose from this place."
"You're not wrong considering what we fought," said Riley.
"This is different," said Meliae. "It's like if something was draining the life directly out of its surroundings. We need to be careful as we go further in."
As the group got close to crossing the line of clouds towards their destination, Garnet spotted the Cerberus that she had sent ahead. They all did not continue and were standing in front a certain spot. "What's wrong?" Garnet asked.
All of the Cerberus used their paws to point in the same direction. "Is something there?" Garnet asked.
The Cerberus nodded in response. Garnet turned to Riley. "Can you feel anything?" she asked.
"No," said Riley. "It's the same as before."
"How about you Meliae?" Garnet asked.
"It's definitely something strange," said Meliae. "It's as if something had sucked the life out of everything here."
Slowly, Garnet made her advance towards the summit, taking extra care to look around the corner when possible. The strange feeling was very worrying, especially when they had encountered such a large creature. If that cave was a trap, that meant that someone had created that trap. "Do you hear that?" Riley asked.
"Hear what?" said Garnet.
"There's someone talking," said Riley.
"Where's it coming from?" Garnet asked.
"There," said Riley as she pointed to a cave off to the side.
The cave looked like the one the trap from the other one. Garnet carefully approached. She heard the voice to. She put her index finger over her mouth, signaling for Riley and Meliae to be silent. "Enough for twenty," said a stringy voice.
"Excellent," a deep voice replied. "I know it's been over fifty years since you've been stranded, but soon, we will be able to return to help."
"I will remain here as long as you need me to Master," said the stringy voice.
"How strong is their city now?" asked the deep voice.
"Their numbers are growing every day, but they seem to be only gaining one or two," said the stringy voice.
"That's not a large amount, so it will not be a problem," said the deep voice.
Garnet took a peek over to see who was talking. She could not believe what she saw. Inside of the cave was enormous treasures. Jewels and precious metals were stockpiled in huge amounts. As she moved further out, she saw the figure, a bone skeleton that wore a brown overcoat. In its hands was a bone staff adorned with a large red crystal.
Name: Lich
Level: 62
Class: Arch Mage
Sub-Class: Undead
Stats: High Intelligence
Garnet was trying to see what the creature was talking to, but she could not see another figure. Carefully, Garnet took steps to get closer, taking extra care not to touch anything.
Quest Update: Search for Hihi'irokane (II)
Defeat the Lich atop Mount Ararat and secure its treasures
Reward: Experience
"Necro Bolt!" The Lich fired a black bolt of magic directly towards Garnet.
BANG. The powerful bolt was fast and struck Garnet's arm as she raised it to defend. Her Mana Armor managed to protect her from the attack. The Lich had sensed Garnet.
As Garnet looked at the Lich, she noticed what was next to it. Its glowing green eyes matched the ball next to it. The black ball had a green eye. There was only one other time she saw something like this, the Invasion. The Lich was somehow likely connected to the Invasion. "They cannot be allowed to escape!" shouted the green eye as it disappeared.
"Create Undead: Bone Vulture!" Five skeletal bird like creatures emerged from the ground.
"Take care of them Cerberus!" Garnet countered with summons of her own. Her Cerberus easily tore the birds apart before they were even ready to attack.
The Lich took its staff in its hand and activated the magic circle in the room. "Shadow Bolt!" A black streak of lightning fired towards Garnet.
Meliae stretched out her arm as a vine and intercepted it, directing the lightning into the ground. Riley took the chance to try to restrict the Lich from using its magic. "Shadow Bind!"
The Lich's arms were tied to the side of its body. "Shadow Puppetry!" The Lich used the power of his own shadow to force his own body to move, negating the effects of Shadow Bind. His body had no flesh or muscle to be damaged.
"Lightning Ray!" Garnet fired six bolts of lightning straight at the Lich. BZZT. The lightning dispersed all over its body. Without flesh and bone, Garnet's level of lightning magic did not have many effects.
"Looks like you people still don't know how to deal with undead," said the Lich.
Garnet's magic was limited. Her primary element, lightning, lacked destructive power. Water was often not strong enough to break bones. Wind might be able to cut them. Fire was too dangerous to be used in an enclosed area. She had to at least try. "Aqua Strike!"
The ball of water that formed in Garnet's hand flew forward at an incredible speed. BANG. The force of the water was able to knock the Lich over. The Lich had gotten overconfident, making it lower its guard. Unlike the Spectre, the small body of the Lich did not have the weight to resist water.
"Necro Rondo!" The Lich released a black cloud that spread outward from its body. The aura then began to focus into his staff.
"Fire Bolt!" Garnet fired a bolt of fire straight towards his staff, aiming to disrupt the spell.
The Lich withdrew its spell, having to protect its staff. "Let's aim for the staff," said Riley. "Transformation: Temptress of the Night."
Garnet transformed as well. "Transformation: Elementalist." She needed the magic power to be able to counter the Lich.
"Necro Blast!" A green burst exploded outward from the Lich as it attempted to push Riley back.
Riley pushed her way through it, grabbing the Lich's staff. "Quickly!" she shouted.
Meliae stretched out her roots, pulling the staff out of the Lich's hand. "What?!?" it shouted surprised by the current events.
Garnet ran up close to the Lich. She focused her mana into her hand. "Aqua Strike!"
Level Up: Aqua Strike (Level 2)
BANG. The burst of water struck the Lich in the chest. "GAH!" the Lich groaned.
Garnet continuously fired the spell into the Lich's chest. "RAWR!" the Lich exerted all of its strength, breaking off its own arms and abandoning its staff to fall back.
The Lich manipulated its own shadows, reaching in the ground to pull out spare bones and repair itself. It attached itself with a new set of bone arms. It stretched its arm up into the air. "Necro Orb!"
The orb quickly formed and it launched the orb directly at them. "Shadow Wall!" Garnet raised the wall in order to absorb the attack. It was too dangerous to risk an explosion while inside the cave.
Riley closed the distance between the Lich and herself, hoping to prevent the Lich from getting an opening to attack with. "I need you to grab its torso," Garnet said to Meliae.
"I'll try," Meliae responded. "But it isn't staying still long enough for me to use my roots through the ground."
"Can you get close enough to do it with Riley?" Garnet asked.
Meliae ran up to the Lich as well. The Lich was being forced into close range combat. As a magic user, it was at a disadvantage. "Aura of Fear!" the Lich shouted as it released black smoke throughout its body. It had no effect on Garnet or her allies. "That's impossible!" shouted the Lich.
"Was Riley's own Aura of Fear interfering?" Garnet thought. It seemed like the two auras cancelled each other out.
The Lich was now having to fall back into a corner. "I will not be done in by lowly spirits!" it shouted in anger. "Domain of Souls!" It spread its aura to fill the entire cave. Small blue lights appeared all around them. "Soul Devour!" The Lich absorbed all of the lights into its mouth and it began to push back.
"Wind Palm!" Riley struck the Lich in the chest as hard as she could with one hand and grabbed the left arm of the Lich. "Now!" she shouted as she turned her body to the side.
Meliae successfully grabbed the Lich's right arm when it was hit by the Wind Palm. Garnet followed up on Riley's attack. "Lightning Fire Bolt!"
With both Riley and Meliae holding on to its arms, the Lich had to separate its arms again, but it was too late. Garnet was already up close to it. "No!" the Lich shouted.
BOOM. The explosive power of Lightning Fire Bolt knocked all three of them aside.

It was confirmation that the Lich was super dead. There was one thing Garnet needed to try. She picked herself up off the ground. "Everyone alright?" she asked.
"Yeah," said Riley. "That was dangerous you know."
"It worked though," Garnet argued. "And you can't say it was stupid because it worked."
Garnet walked up to the body of the Lich. She had to hurry before it disappeared. "What are you doing?" Riley asked.
"I have to try," said Garnet. "Recall!" Garnet called over a Revenant. "Can you Assimilate it?" she asked.
The Revenant merged into the remains of the Lich. The bones began to reassemble themselves. When the bones finished, the figure was kneeling before Garnet. "What is all this?" Garnet asked.
"These are all materials that were accumulated by the Lich in order to prepare for the arrival of its Master," said the Lich.
As Garnet took a closer look, she looked at all the materials assembled. There was a huge amount of gold coins and various types of metals. "Is there any Hihi'irokane here?" Garnet asked.
The Lich pointed at the orb on top of the staff. "There's one there," it said. "And another here," it said as it got up and walked over to the pile of gold coins, tossing many of them aside.
"Are you in any way connected to Crossen?" Garnet asked.
"No," said the Lich. "This body used to work for the Guide, Angol, but it never saw its Master."
That bit of information confirmed what Garnet had thought earlier. The Lich was indeed connected to the Invasions, but was created on this world. "Here it is," said the Lich.
Garnet saw it. A small, fist sized chunk of bright red crystal. "Is this it?" she asked.
The Lich nodded. Garnet realized she needed a name for the Lich. "Do you have a name?" she asked.
"No," the Lich responded.
"Do you have a preference?" Garnet asked.
"No," said the Lich.
"Do you mind if I give you a name?" Garnet asked.
"No," said the Lich.
"Can you say anything else besides no?" Garnet inquired.
"Yes," said the Lich. "But the Lich and the Revenants exist to serve our Master."
"How about Raphael?" Garnet asked. "Is that okay with you?"
"Then I shall refer to myself as such from now on," said Raphael.
"Let's clear all of this out," said Garnet. "I'm sure we can make use of all of these materials in the future."
Meliae, Riley, and Raphael all gathered the materials into Garnet's storage ring. The gem on the ring suddenly changed color and expanded. She could feel the amount of mana from the materials flow outward of the ring. The precious materials gathered inside of it leaked some its power onto the ring.
