Book 8: Chapter 064 - In Pursuit of Strength

Book 8: Chapter 064 - In Pursuit of Strength

This chapter took a lot longer than expected because I realized that I basically had to write out a draft of nearly everything that will happen in the remainder of the current arc. So basically, I know what the next book and a half is going to be about.

Spoiler :

Because each of the nine tails of the fox form will come to develop a unique power

I ended up spending a lot of time creating abilities for some of the characters that will appear later on. Unfortunately, this will not speed up writing as my summer job had a few surprises for me as well. I ended up having to teach a class that I did not plan for and had to improvise.

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Kai led everyone out of the city, bringing them to the ruins of a city southwest of Taklamakan. The whole city resembled the ruins of Constantinople, with fragments of some buildings remaining, but most of it remained uninhabited. Like Constantinople, the city was destroyed by something. The group continued following Kai through the ruins.

"It's somewhere around here I think," said Kai.

"What happened here?" Garnet asked.

"An Extermination," Xiaomei replied.

"It's deemed as a last resort when something is deemed too dangerous to continue and all other attempts to stop something has failed," Zedd added.

"But what could have provoked such an action?' Riley inquired. "What were they doing?"

"Like all the other schools and clans, they were trying to become stronger," Xiaomei explained. "But they did the unthinkable, they killed their own Divine God and crafted items from its body while they shared the corpse of the Divine God among themselves."

If someone killed a Divine Creature, then the world would be plunged into darkness or chaos would it not? Sunny had explained what would happen if a Divine Creature was killed, but why did it seem like it did not happen here? "What happened after?" Garnet asked.

"The spirit of the fox went berserk," said Xiaomei. "Its entire body reanimated as a skeleton and sought out those who had killed it. For nine months, the creature ravaged the lands, destroying everything in its path until the four strongest clans unified themselves and fought the fox. Since then, this land has been abandoned and most people do not dare to come close to this place in fear of awakening the fox once more."

Kai began to crawl under some of the rubble, looking for something. Shortly after it emerged again. "Nope, not here," said Kai.

"Wasn't it killed?" Garnet asked.

"Sealed," said Xiaomei. "They couldn't find a way to kill it permanently. Each time it was killed, it resurrected itself even stronger. So in response, they buried the place and burned down everything they could in order to hide the place."

"Is it safe to really be here?" Quinton asked. "Isn't it bad if we awaken the spirit of the fox?"

"The anger of the spirit should be directed at those who killed it in the first place," Kai interrupted. "You guys should be fine unless you took one of them."

Garnet realized there was a contradiction in the story. If the Divine Fox's anger was directed at those that killed it, then why did the Divine Fox go after all of those people and rampage for nine months? "What happened to the items that were created from the body of the fox?" Garnet asked.

"They were taken by the four clans," said Xiaomei. "It's most likely why the fox remained so angry, but it's also why the clans spent so much time to develop the ability to seal a living creature inside an item now."

Kai was one of the victims of it that was freed. Luckily if they were just sealed, it also meant that they could be unsealed without much harm though being sealed and aware of your experiences might not be pleasant either. There was an ongoing arms race between the major clans and schools in an attempt to be the strongest and this has what it has led them to. Even if they are not allowed to openly fight each other for power, they will find other ways to do it, just like how the nobility struggled for power back an Antium.

"I think this is it," said Kai as it re-emerged from the rubble underneath a huge building. "You'll have to make yourself an opening and head under."

Zedd led the way and began to push some of the rocks aside. Riley, Quinton, Xiaomei, and Garnet followed. After removing some of the largest pieces, they saw an opening underground. There were familiar looking engravings in the ground around it with some black and red paper talismans. "It's a seal," said Zedd.

"Breaking a seal doesn't sound like a good idea," said Quinton.

"This is the only way in," said Kai.

"They'll also be aware that we're here once we break the seal," said Zedd. "The talismans placed here are transmission talismans. If we go in, we have to commit."

"The seal is already broken," said Kai as it used one of its legs to point at the corner of the seal.

Zedd looked closely and saw that there was a tiny chip in the stone. It was most likely from the seal not being properly maintained, but it was already broken. "It really is broken, so we should be able to go in undetected," he said.

"Wait," said Xiaomei.

"What is it?" Quinton asked.

"This is a fox spirit," said Xiaomei. "It will most likely try to trick one of us into freeing it. Promise me, none of you will try to free it."

"I promise," said Garnet.

"I promise," said Riley.

"I promise," said Quinton.

Everyone turned to look at Zedd. "I promise," said Zedd.

"Good," said Xiaomei. "If any one of us looks like we're about to free the fox spirit, make sure to stop them."

Everyone nodded in agreement. If the fox spirit was a Divine God and wanted revenge, then they absolutely could not let it free, especially with the black star just outside the wall releasing new monsters on a regular basis. However, Garnet needed to know the answer to why the death of a spirit here did not harm the world. The fox spirit would have the answers.

Zedd smashed the seal and pushed the rocks aside. What remained was a ramp leading to a crudely formed opening under the ruins of the city. It did not appear to go as deep as the one in Constantinople. With a torch in hand, he led the way down.

"Help me!" cried a deep voice.

It was the same as Kai. "I hear it calling to me," said Garnet.

"The fox spirit?" Riley asked.

"I'm not sure," said Garnet. "It's like when Kai called out to me."

"You have a gift," said Kai. "It was no coincidence that you heard my voice the first time."

"I can feel the pain that is coming from the spirit," said Garnet as she fell to her knees. "It's calling out to me and it hurts in my chest." She felt as if there was something burning in her heart. She looked in the corner of her eye to see if it was really serious. There was only an abnormal status. It read "Spirit Link."

"Should we go back?" Zedd asked.

"No," Garnet replied. "We can't waste this opportunity."

After a few moments, the pain subsided. "It's gone," said Garnet as she stood back up.

"I think we should head back," said Quinton. "If this is already causing you trouble, it might be worse as we get closer."

"No," Garnet repeated. "We cannot waste this opportunity. This is the only information we have to meet a Divine God."

"I agree," said Riley. "If Garnet is fine with it, we should continue."

"If it gets too bad, I'll warn everyone and we'll leave okay?" said Garnet.

"Alright," said Quinton. "If you're fine with it, then I won't stop you."

The group headed straight down the narrow corridor. It seemed more like a crudely constructed tunnel than a corridor. The dirt was just held in place with some wood. On the sides of the corridor were numerous talismans. "Explosive talismans," said Zedd. "They really didn’t want this spirit to get out."

"If it tried to escape, they would just detonate them and cause the whole place to collapse," Xiaomei added.

As the group went deeper into the tunnel, the types of talismans began to change. "These are sealing talismans," said Zedd. "It should be impossible to break through them, but the fact that we can walk through it means that their power has been depleted."

"If this fox spirit is such a feared creature, why isn't anyone maintaining it?" Quinton asked.

"It could have been forgotten or someone is intentionally doing it," said Xiaomei. "After all, if another conflict breaks out with the fox spirit, there will be another chance to acquire Artifacts."

"Someone wanted this?!?" said Riley. "Who in their right mind would intentionally threaten their own home for power?"

"The strong clans have threatened the weaker ones before," said Xiaomei. "We refer to this as 'Suppression' when we talk about it. We threaten everything from their lives to their businesses."

Things here were not much better than they were in Antium. Nobles continued to struggle for power and would threaten each other in order to acquire that power.

The group arrived in front of a large empty hall with a large wooden door. On the door were large talismans along with a formation like one of the ones that Duchess Himiko used. It looked like there was still another seal on top of that. There were at least eight different types of seals on it from the looks of it. Even though the seals before it had deteriorated, this one was still active.

Kai called over to them. "Over here!" it shouted.

The group ran over and saw that there was a hole that was large enough for a small person to crawl through. Even though the door itself was sealed, the area around it had worn off. The talismans had lost their power and could no longer maintain the seal. Garnet took a peek inside the hole. She tried to move through it, but she could not fit and she was the smallest person in the group.

On the other side was a single skinny, white haired man. He had a pair of black ears that popped out from the top of his head and he did not have ears on the side of his hair. He had nine tails that Garnet could see moving around behind him. Each of the tails were nearly as tall as him. He was fairly skinny. His arms, legs, and neck, and tails were all chained. The chains were attached to the sides of the cave, but were long enough for the man to move around within the large area.

Name: Gorry

Level: 100

Class: Fox Spirit

Sub-Class: Divine / Transformage

Stats: High Agility

As the chained man raised his head to look at Garnet, Garnet could see the yellow pupils in his eyes along with what appeared to be whiskers across his face. "You've come!" he said. "Please, get me out of here!" he cried desperately.

The mind games had begun. The fox spirit was pleading for help, trying to get sympathy from them while sounding desperate. "It's a Divine Spirit," said Garnet.

Xiaomei took a look. "It's in its human form, not its natural form," she said.

"Its natural form should be a large white fur fox with nine tails each the length of its body," said Zedd.

"So what's the plan?" Riley asked.

Zedd sat quietly and thought about it. "Well, we can break the surrounding rock to enter the main room, but the question remains of how to secure its help without it threatening our lives," said Zedd.

There was no plan for that. If they freed it, they would have to rely on its trust to help them, but then again, a spirit that has been sealed for a long period of time would not be friendly towards people. There was no way to know for certain that it would help. "Anyone have any ideas?" Garnet asked.

"The only way that I know of would be to seal him into something, but we don't have anything capable of handling that kind of power," said Zedd.

"I don't think you should seal him," said Kai. "It might just make him angrier, even if it's just something temporary."

"How about a magic contract?" Riley suggested.

"I don't know of one that can be made on something so powerful," said Zedd. "It might work if they don't resist, but if they do, then it's useless."

ROAR. Gorry transformed back into his natural form. A four legged fox with nine tails all covered in white fur began smashing against the walls of the cave. Even though the fox had been sealed, it still had incredible strength. Since the seal was not being renewed or maintained properly, it was making progress by slowly chipping away at the surrounding rocks. Sooner or later, it would break free. The only question was when.

If it was not for the fact that this was the only free Divine God that they knew of, they probably would not have stayed. "Is there any way to acquire its power without breaking the seal?" Zedd asked Xiaomei.

"I'm not sure," said Xiaomei. "This is the only one I've ever seen sealed. But I don't think it would be willing to help us unless we do break the seal."

"Then there's nothing we can do for now," said Zedd. "I think we should retreat and find another way. This is just too risky."

BAM. Gorry began to smash against the door. He was trying to break through the seal again. BAM. He was repeatedly smashing against the seal, but it still held strong. "Since you're not coming to help me, I'm coming to you!" he shouted.

"Let's get out of here," said Quinton.

"I agree," said Zedd.

The group quickly made their way out the way they came in. The narrow corridor seemed a lot smaller now that they were trying to run. All of the fail safes behind them were useless since they had deteriorated.

A message box appeared: Skill Lost: Call: Kai.

"Kai?" Garnet shouted. "Recall!"

It was of no use. Kai was gone. It was the only one that had not ran out of the cave.

The sound of footsteps could be heard behind them. As the group turned around to face it, the sound of the steps began to hasten. "Kai?" Zedd asked.

"No," said Garnet. "It's something else." If the skill was lost, that means something happened to Kai.

Kai reappeared with its scales turned white. Its head was transforming, slowly turning into the head of a fox. "I have to thank you for bringing that spirit here," said Kai.

The voice that was coming out of Kai's body was not his own. It was Gorry's, the fox spirit. Gorry had merged with Kai's body and made it his own. Its appearance was slowly transforming into that of the fox. The left eye of the main head was already growing the white fur that they had seen on Gorry's original body. "What did you do?!?" Riley shouted.

"Spirit Transmigration," said Kai. "I can move my spirit into another body and make it my own and I need a human host to further my plans."

"He's after one of us, be careful!" said Zedd.

Kai's small body was extremely nimble under Gorry's control. "Trigram of Wind!" Several small octagons with patterns of black lines appeared underneath him and in the air around them. It used these symbols to amplify its speed. The first one it aimed for was Zedd who stood in front.

"Watch out!" Zedd shouted as he swung his sword, swatting Kai aside.

One of the trigrams moved behind Kai, who used it as a springboard to continue forward. "Lightning Bolt!" Riley's lightning struck Kai's body.

ROAR. Kai released a powerful roar that pushed the lightning back. "Trigram of the Earth!" Another octagon with patterns of black lines appeared in front of Kai, deflecting everything that was being thrown at him.

Kai continued his dash towards Garnet. "Jet Stream!"

The burst of water from Garnet did nothing to stop the barrier. "Spirit Transmigration!"

Kai's body went limp as a small white fox spirit leapt from its body and went straight for Garnet. Gorry entered straight into her chest. "I win!" Gorry proudly shouted.

A white box appeared in front of Garnet: Foreign Presence Detected. Activating Defense Mechanism.

Garnet could feel that the wings on her back emerged and she was partially transformed. Her body was reacting to the presence of Gorry in her body. She could feel what Gorry went through during his time sealed. All his anger swelled up inside of her. "Get out of my head," she said.

"Give in to the anger," said Gorry. "Your hatred towards the nobles is one that you share with me."

"I'm not like you!" Garnet shouted. "I'm not aiming for their death!"

"But with your power, you can kill them any time you want," said Gorry.

"No!" Garnet shouted. Her eye transformed. Through it, she was able to see a dark place.

Through Garnet's right eye, a blue flame appeared. Garnet quickly turned her head around, but what her right eye and her left eye saw were different. With her left eye, she saw Riley and everyone else running towards her. With her right eye, she saw the blue flames around her light up, eight in all. She quickly looked down and saw that dirt was underneath her in both places.

Stolen from its rightful author, this tale is not meant to be on Amazon; report any sightings.

ROAR. Garnet heard the sound of Gorry's roar from in front of her. The white fur glistened from the presence of the blue flames. "Where did you take me?!?" Gorry shouted angrily. "This isn't your mind!"

The Defense Mechanism the System Message gave Garnet earlier reacted to Gorry entering her body. It had moved Gorry into another part of her body. "I wish I could tell you, but I don't know," said Garnet.

"I'll take your body anyways," said Gorry as it ran towards Garnet.

ROAR. Another roar came from behind Garnet. This one was much louder. CLANG. It was the sound of metal breaking. CLANG. Another one. CLANG. The sound repeated as numerous pieces of metal broke apart. The blue flames turned white in color.

Garnet knew where she was now. Her mana reservoir. There was a large dragon in here that Garnet could see part of when she was here before. It had transformed into Riley the first time, but it was clear now that the dragon was a resident of this place. The dragon transforming into Riley was possibly what happened when Assad overwrote the trial. The dragon was now free.

ROAR. The dragon flew over Garnet and crashed straight into Gorry, knocking him to the ground. BOOM. Its claw struck Gorry in the chest. BOOM. It continued to smash Gorry.

Garnet could see that this was no ordinary dragon. When it revealed itself in the light, its skin changed colors, like it had transformed. Patterns of golden light glistened off the scales. It had six wings that were each much larger than its main body. Spikes protruded out of its spine. It looked very different from the dragons that she had seen before.

"I refuse to give up so easily!" said Gorry. "Fox Fire!" Each of its tails spread outward as they generated a small blue ball of fire. They flew outward merged at the designated location, the dragon in front of Garnet.

BOOM. The flames crashed against the body of the dragon, forcing it back. Gorry pushed with all its might pushing the dragon over. However, the dragon did not relent. It continued its assault before Gorry had a chance to recover. It opened its mouth. "Lightning Breath!"

A yellow light appeared in its mouth before hundreds of bolts of lightning flew outward towards the direction of Gorry. "Trigram of Earth!"

Gorry deployed the same octagon with patterns of black lines in front of him in order to deflect the blast. It seemed to be able to deflect any attack that was coming from the front. Garnet would have to help the dragon if they were going to be able to defeat Gorry.

Back in Garnet's other eye, Riley and Zedd had finally reached her. It was as if everything around her was moving in slow motion. She could see their lips move, but she could barely hear what they were saying because of how slow it was moving. "Let me concentrate!" Garnet shouted.

Zedd and Riley took a step back and watched as Garnet fully transformed into her Queen of the Night form, but this was done involuntarily. This was her body reacting to the presence of Gorry, a foreign creature trying to take possession of her body.

Meanwhile, inside of her mana reservoir, the battle between Gorry and the dragon continued. Although Gorry's power was able to push the dragon back, the dragon was not sustaining any damage at all. As Garnet looked into the corner of her eye to see how this was affecting her, she noticed it. Whenever the dragon took a hit, her mana decreased a little, and then it quickly recovered. The dragon was tied to her mana and it recovered whenever Garnet recovered mana. As long as the dragon could wear down Gorry, the dragon would eventually win. Garnet decided that she needed to participate as well. She needed to fight back against the foreign presence in her body.

"Shadow Bind!" Garnet used the lack of light and the shadows around her to restrict the movements of Gorry. Each of its tails were pressed down on the floor. As fast as the fox was, it would lose its advantage once the shadows tied him down.

"Blood Bind!" Garnet activated a second skill to limit the movement of Gorry. The mix of black and red ropes wrapped all around Gorry's body, removing its speed advantage.

"Let go!" Gorry shouted as it stretched its head, trying to break free of the bindings.

"It won't be that easy," said Garnet.

The dragon rammed its head straight into Gorry's. BANG. The dragon's immense strength pushed Gorry over and began to dig its claws into Gorry's body. BAM. Gorry's thick fur proved to be a challenge for the dragon to pierce through.

The dragon was able to keep Gorry pinned down. "Fox Fire!" Gorry attempted to use its tails again, but this time, the tails could not spread properly and the fire was concentrated in strange parts. The fire spread outward like a brushfire, but not in the direction of Garnet or the dragon.

Gorry did not continue to panic. Instead, it tried a new attack. It opened its mouth and prepared for some kind of breath attack. "Fire Blast!"

A blue flame emerged from Gorry's mouth. BOOM. It smashed against the dragon and scattered all around its upper body. Garnet's mana took a massive hit, but the dragon still stood strong.

The problem was that the dragon could not break the tough fox skin of Gorry. Garnet would need to do it for the dragon. "Wind Blade!" Garnet shot the wind at the fox. FWOOM. The wind scattered along its fur. It was not enough to penetrate the skin, but it made a small cut into the skin.

"Icicle Lance!" SHING. The spear of ice pierced through the skin of the fox.

ROAR. Gorry roared in pain. It tried to reach its arm out in order to remove the lance, but the dragon kept it pinned.

Garnet continued her assault. "Sword Rain!" Six swords appeared and pierced the skin of the fox.

ROAR. Gorry continued to scream in pain. "It can't end like this!" it shouted. "I should be stronger than you!"

"Your mistake was attacking me within my own body," said Garnet. In a head on fight, she would have lost, but Gorry needed to invade her body to take it over. What should have been Gorry's advantage was now becoming his reason for losing.

"Trigram of Earth!" A barrier appeared between Garnet and Gorry.

"Sword Rain!" Garnet called forth another six swords. SHING. The swords got stuck in the barrier that Gorry deployed. Garnet tried it again. "Sword Rain!" Another six swords appeared. One of the swords pushed a sword stuck in the barrier, breaking it and pushing all of the swords through. Two piercing type spells that strike the same spot in a barrier was able to break it. This was information that Garnet could use in the future.

The dragon began to smash the swords into Gorry's body, pushing them deep into Gorry's body. Gorry no longer even had the strength to move its limbs. "Why do I feel so weak?" he asked.

Soon Gorry would breathe its last breath. "The youngest is also usually the mentally weakest," Gorry said to himself.

"That's because you underestimated me," said Garnet. "You never treated me as a real threat, so when you start to lose ground, you started questioning your own abilities."

COUGH. Blood flowed from Gorry's mouth as he bled out. "I should have gone for the old man," said Gorry.

You have leveled up!

You have leveled up!

You have leveled up!

Gorry died. "Essence Absorption!" Garnet wanted to get any abilities she could from Gorry. After all, it was a Divine Creature.

As Garnet's vision returned to normal, she saw that she had unknowingly transformed into a Nine Tailed Fox. The white flames in her mana reservoir returned blue as the dragon looked at her and was bound in chains once more. Quinton and Xiaomei had their weapons directed at her just in case.

"Ugh, my head," said Garnet as she groaned.

"Are you you?" Xiaomei asked.

"Yeah," said Garnet. "You can put your sword down."

"How do we know for sure?" Quinton asked.

"Cause your sword won't do much against this skin anyways," Garnet replied. "I saw how tough that thing was."

Zedd approached Garnet and hugged her. "A Hero cannot be possessed by others," he whispered.

The Defense Mechanism within Garnet had protected her. Garnet looked around for Kai, who was still nowhere to be seen. It looked like Kai was gone. The ground had also started to darken, with the grasses turning brown and the leaves starting to fall from the trees. The local Divine Spirit had fallen, and the area would now suffer for it. However, one will eventually come to take its place. "Are you going to be like that the whole time?" Riley asked.

Garnet took a look at herself. She had nine tails sticking out of her back and cat ears on the top of her head. On each cheek were three lines marked like whiskers. Her eyes had also turned both her eyes red. Even the nails on her hand became sharp. On top of that, she could not use her wings. "I'll have to try this form out later," said Garnet. "Transformation!"

Garnet quickly returned back to normal. "So what now?" Garnet asked. "We don't have a Divine God to help us nor a spirit to guide us anymore."

"I suppose we can just go back to looking for the Odd Eyed Tiger," said Riley. "That seems like the most appropriate course of action."

"I agree," said Xiaomei. "We need to find you guys a Divine God that can help you as soon as possible."

Riley and Garnet both turned their heads. "Be careful, someone is watching us," said Garnet.

Everyone formed a circle facing outwards, looking for what was coming.

"I never thought I'd see you of all people here," said a middle aged man who stepped forward. He was wearing black and gold robes, one of the colors that was described in town that was seen hunting the Odd Eyed creatures. His robe also contained an embroidered golden dragon that wrapped around the entire robe. His face was kept clean shaven and he held a single sword in his hand with a white and gold bow on his back.
