So this begins the second major arc, which will probably be shorter than the first arc as it did a lot to establish the world and Garnet's powers. At this point, there's going to be less focus on the world and a little more towards the smaller things, specifically, things like the value of magic. Characters are probably still going to suck though. I'm not that good with characters. By my estimates, arcs 5 and 6 will be about 6 chapters each because they can be treated as filler with the important parts foreshadowing future enemies. I'll also try to develop some of the locations a little more.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anzio was a trade city that had been developed by the King and other members of the government using a meritocracy that rewarded people and chose people based on their qualifications rather than their title. Anyone could move up the ranks provided they met the requirements. Nobles could lose important government positions for corruption of if they railed to do their job properly and they would be replaced by someone else who was better qualified. They still had some advantages such as not having to pay taxes and having the wealth needed to send their children to Anzio Academy, so it was not completely fair either.
The security outside the city was heightened and Garnet and Riley both needed to be searched before they were allowed in. Garnet headed straight for Anzio academy. Along the way, she saw that there were a lot more guards and they were heavily armed compared to the ones Garnet saw last time. Certain buildings even had additional guards in front of them. The entire city felt different from the last time that Garnet was there. Ruby was unavailable the last few times Garnet visited. Garnet had gotten information from Leeroy instead.
"Mommy!" Ruby cried. "It's been a while." she said as she hugged Garnet.
"We've been busy," said Garnet.
"How bad was it?" asked Leeroy.
Leeroy could probably see that the Invasion was occurring all the way from Anzio, which was hundreds of miles away from Antium. It was hard to miss that eye. It was also likely the reason why security was raised in Anzio.
"About a third of the soldiers were injured or killed," said Garnet.
"That's not too bad then," said Leeroy. "At least compared to the last one."
Garnet remembered that they had lost nearly everything in the previous Invasion. A third of your forces lost was still a big deal though. Soldiers were not easily replaced and took time to train. Antium was lucky that the average Invasion was something like five years apart. "Have you been doing well Ruby?" asked Garnet.
"Yes," said Ruby.
"Has she been good?" Garnet asked Leeroy.
"Yes," said Leeroy. "Except I think that she might be the one picking the fights soon."
"Why do you say that?" Garnet asked as she looked at Ruby. She had grown a little taller and her hair had grown out a little longer.
"She got into an argument with one of the other students about a better way to collect taxes," said Leeroy.
"So what happened?" Garnet asked.
"Nothing yet," said Leeroy. "They just argued."
"Don't hit people unless they hit you first okay?" said Garnet.
"Yes," said Ruby.
"By the way, who's that?" asked Leeroy as he pointed to Riley who was standing by the door still.
"That's my sister," said Garnet. Riley waved at them.
"Your sister?!?" said Leeroy. "Why did you never speak of her?"
"We're not related by blood," said Garnet. "You can say we know each other because of similar interests, which is what I'm here to talk about."
"So you're going somewhere?" asked Leeroy.
"Yes, I plan to go to Constantinople," said Garnet.
"Why there?" asked Leeroy. "That's one of the most dangerous places."
"I believe there's information that is only recorded inside the ruins of the city," said Garnet. "I don't plan on going alone, I'm going to find other people who are willing to come with me."
"Come outside," said Leeroy. "I need to see how strong you are first."
It was a test. Constantinople was a dangerous place and Leeroy wanted to make sure that Garnet was strong enough to survive. The two headed outside into the big courtyard where others often trained to fight. There were people who were training in the ways of swords, spears, and bows. There were other weapons on the ground, but no one used them.
"Why are you two fighting?" Ruby asked.
"Don't worry, we won't hurt each other," said Garnet. "It's just so Leeroy can see how I've changed," said Garnet as she pat Ruby on the head.
Leeroy
Level: 36
Class: Warrior
Sub-Class: Halberdier
Stats: High Agility, High Vitality
Leeroy had gotten stronger too. He was not just sitting around. However, by comparison, Garnet had improved far more. Leeroy walked over to one of the weapon stands and picked up a heavy looking wooden sword. He swung it around and put it down. He moved to the next one. After repeating this three times, he went back to the second one and settled on it. "Take any weapon you want," said Leeroy.
"I'm fine with this staff," said Garnet.
Leeroy looked over Garnet's staff and had already begun to formulate his plan.
Ruby covered her eyes. She did not want to see them fighting. "It's okay," said Riley who stood in front of Ruby and held her close. "I'll tell you when it's over."
"Okay," said Ruby who looked up at Garnet. "You feel like mommy."
Leeroy charged towards Garnet with his sword. He was fast. Garnet tilted her staff to the side to block the attack. CLANG. A loud sound rang throughout as the sword came in contact with the staff. Garnet had to take a few steps back as she deflected the sword towards the ground..
Even though Leeroy was only a few levels higher than Garnet, Leeroy was strong. He was much stronger than Arnold Gray. Leeroy had been a person who actually fought on a regular basis and constantly trained himself.
Leeroy did not give up. He continued his assault with a one handed swing. "He's up to something," thought Garnet.
Garnet parried the blow with the staff. CLANG. Leeroy used his free left hand to strike Garnet in the stomach. Garnet titled her entire body, moving her shoulder forward and countered with a tackle, knocking Leeroy a few steps back.
"You seem like you have a lot of fighting experience," said Leeroy.
"Anna taught me," said Garnet.
"That would explain a lot," said Leeroy. "One more move. If you can block this, you pass."
Leeroy held the sword directly in front of him with both his hands. He was probably going to use a weapon skill of some kind. Garnet did not recognize it though. It was not something that Anna had shown her. Garnet decided to play it safe and focus on defense this time. In an instant, Leeroy dashed forward covering the distance between the two of them in about half a second. "Sonic Rush!"
It was Leeroy's own special skill. Leeroy aimed for Garnet's left side, which was partially exposed because of how Garnet held the staff. However, Garnet had a counter for this too. She rolled her body to the side, delaying how long it would take for Leeroy's attack to land by a split second. That split second was all Garnet needed. "Ki Burst!" With an explosive force, Leeroy was knocked sideways and down.
"Are you okay?" asked Garnet who did not realize how much force that she used.
"Yeah," said Leeroy. "That hurts."
"It's over," said Riley as she let go of Ruby.
Ruby looked over, still partially hidden behind Riley's body. Garnet reached out her hand and helped Leeroy up."Did I pass?" asked Garnet.
"Yes," said Leeroy. "If you were trained by Anna, you were definitely ready. It's just I wanted to see for myself. I never knew you were this strong."
Garnet was not always that strong. Since she got the benefit of the Hero System though, she improved immensely. Leeroy was by no means weak either. He took on the full force of the Ki Burst yet he got up shortly after as if it was almost nothing.
"I take it you're going to work for the Guild?" asked Leeroy.
"Yes," said Garnet.
"A young woman like yourself needs to be careful," said Leeroy. "There are some bad people out there who target young women like you."
"I know," said Garnet. "Zedd already warned me of it, which is why I'm going to build up a reputation with the Guild first."
"I see," said Leeroy.
"Do you know any quick ways to rise through the ranks?" asked Garnet.
"Usually, supply quests are the fastest if there's a lot," said Leeroy. "You can just find a bunch that asks for similar materials and then hunt for all of them at once."
"Thanks for the information," said Garnet.
"Oh and if you need a place to stay, use the house that Anna was staying at," said Leeroy. "King Charles kept it and I've been taking care of it as well."
"I will," said Garnet. "Be good now," Garnet said to Ruby.
"I won't hit anyone unless they hit me first!" said Ruby.
Garnet and Riley headed to the small house. It had two rooms. The place was a little dusty because it was not used for a while, but it was still in good shape. One room had a bed in it. The other still had a crib and some of the other baby stuff that was used to take care of Jade and Jasper. It was not as big as Zedd's place, but Garnet could still set up a workshop and use the cauldron to make things if she needed.
There were still a few things Garnet wanted to try though, Item Enhancement and Disassemble. Garnet took out one of the Iron Ingots she had made with Zedd. "Disassemble!" Nothing happened. She tried it with a piece of Wild Boar Meat. "Diassemble!" Nothing happened either. "Did it need to be a created item?" she thought. If it did, she did not have the materials or the ways for it yet.
Without an earth spirit, Garnet could not use the cauldron like a forge to make a weapon. She decided to try something else. She applied her mana to the Iron Ingot. "Item Enhancement!"
Success!
Name: Iron Ingot+1
Quality: Low
Effect: Weapon forged with this can channel a small amount of mana through it.
Garnet suddenly wanted to try it with different things. She pulled out the knife strapped to her leg. "Item Enhancement!"
Failure! Skill level is too low.
Garnet's skill was only level one still since she barely started to use it. She would have to level it up before she could do more. There was something she could do though. If she could find some low quality weapons for a cheap price, she could enhance it with magic and then sell it back. It would be a nice source of income.
Riley just watched Garnet confused at what she was doing. "If you're not going to do anything, I'm going to clean this place a little," said Riley. "I can't believe you're willing to just leave the dust like that."
Garnet had a supply of Wild Boar Hides and Wolf Pelts from a long time ago she never touched. It was still in her Inventory. She wanted to try it. "Item Enhancement!"
Success!
Name: Wild Boar Hide+1
Quality: Low
Effect: Slightly stronger than normal Wild Boar Hide
The quality of the items used to be high, but when Garnet used Item Enhancement on it, it suddenly became low. She tried a few more times.
Level Up: Item Enhancement (Level 2)
Name: Wild Boar Hide+4
Quality: Medium
Effect: Stronger than normal Wild Boar Hide, more resistant to cold
Upgrading items with Item Enhancement could provide them with additional effects. Garnet wanted to see how high it could go. Each successive enhancement seemed to consume more mana as well.
Success!
Success!
Failure!
Success!
Failure! Skill level is too low.
Name: Wild Boar Hide+7
Quality: High
Effect: Much stronger than normal Wild Boar Hide, resistant to heat, resistant to cold, resistant to piercing, resistant to slashing, resistant to blunt.
There was a massive difference. It was likely that Peter used high quality hides and cloth like this to create his clothes with so many effects. Item Enhancement had a lot of potential. As long as Garnet had the time, she could make use of it and exploit it. The problem was that she would need to find a buyer, preferably though the Guild so that she could work towards a higher ranking in the process. But first, Garnet decided to try to make as many as she could.
Level Up: Item Enhancement (Level 3)
Level Up: Item Enhancement (Level 4)
Name: Wolf Pelt +7
Quality: High
Effect: Much stronger than normal Wolf Pelts, immunity to cold and slashing
Items made from such high quality materials would be very powerful, but only someone with specialized tools and equipment would be able to do it. If an entire army was equipped with such a thing, they would probably be unstoppable. However, it was unlikely that such a thing would be possible since it would take multiple hides and pelts to make even just one piece of clothing. To make enough for thousands was impossible unless you had an army of mages employed just to enhance the materials and then another army of artisans dedicated to processing the materials.
Garnet stored about three dozen of each inside her rings and headed to the Guild to see if there were any requests that asked for them. If not, she was going to see if Peter would buy them off of her. "I'm heading to the Guild," Garnet announced.
"I want to come with," said Riley. "I haven't actually been in it myself."
Riley had spent most of her time cleaning the place since it was dirty from no one living in it. It now looked fairly decent compared to when they entered. She had a keen eye and there was almost no dust or dirt left in the house.
Garnet and Riley headed to the large Guild building. Garnet took out her Guild Card, which was unmarked. Proof that she was still of the lowest rank. The only thing she had done was supply some Wild Boar Meat to them and earned a tiny bit, but that was worth almost nothing. She needed to do the high profile jobs in order to acquire enough fame and reputation. Only then would she be able to find people who were strong enough and willing to go to Constantinople.
As Garnet and Riley entered, there were a lot of eyes focused on them. "Ignore them," said Garnet.
"Alright," said Riley.
The two headed towards the wall that was filled with requests and started browsing. Most of them had rank requirements, meaning that Garnet could not accept them. There were a few "Expedition" type requests that were looking for large numbers of people, but those also had high requirements. Last time, Garnet was in a hurry and only picked the one she recognized.
This time, there were a lot more that she did not notice before. Most that requested items did not have a rank requirement, after all, it was expensive to get high ranking people. But, it also meant that the amount of danger was uncertain. A request for someone to process gold into ingots. A request for someone to kill a monster that had taken over a coal mine. A request for 2 square meters of leather. A request for two square meters of warm fur. "That was it!" thought Garnet. She pulled down the sheet and walked over to the counter.
Garnet presented her Guild Card along with the request and took out some of the Wild Boar Hide. She handed everything to the receptionist at once. "Here you go," said the receptionist as he handed Garnet back her card and some silver. It was not what she had expected. Gathering of materials was very unrewarding. Yet, she had to do it in order to make her way up the ranks.
"Are there any other requests for things like Wild Boar Hides or Wolf Pelts?" Garnet asked. "I have a lot of with me."
"One moment," said the receptionist as he looked through the requests. After a few minutes, he spoke again, "There are four others that fit that category."
This tale has been unlawfully lifted from Royal Road. If you spot it on Amazon, please report it.
"I'll fill them all," said Garnet as she took out a bunch of Wild Boar Hides and Wolf Pelts.
The receptionist picked out a few of them. "That's enough, you can keep the rest," said the receptionist. The receptionist took the pieces and stamped Garnet's card before handing it back to her. Her card now had a single copper coin stamp in the empty spaces where Anna's had three star shaped diamonds.
Garnet wanted to move up the ranks faster, but this was too slow. There was always the other option, to find a request with a strong enemy and kill it before taking the request. Then, come back, take the request and show proof that you already did it. It was risky though as Garnet did not know the ranking system. She might challenge something that was too strong. That would be the worst thing that could happen. On the other hand, it could also draw too much attention to her, which could be just as bad if it was unwanted attention. Garnet made her way back to the request wall to see if there was anything she could do at her low rank. But for now, there was nothing. For now, she just decided to leave.
"That's it?" asked Riley.
"There's only so much you can do as a beginner," said Garnet. "At least we have some money now."
"I suppose," said Riley. "For a moment, I thought I would actually get to fight something."
"Soon," said Garnet. "But for now, it's best to take things slowly. I don't want to draw too much attention just yet."
At the house, Garnet continued to process as much of the Wild Boar Hide and Wolf Pelts as she could.
Level Up: Item Enhancement (Level 5)
Stat Increase: Intelligence +1
The rate at which the skill was going up started to slow down. She would need to work with different materials to raise it faster. Garnet tried to enhance her knife.
Failure! Skill level is too low.
It still was not enough. There seemed to be a chance for each increase and the rate decreased as more enhancements were applied. Success rate was tied to the user's own skill level and the quality of the item. Luckily, failure did not mean breaking the item. As long as Garnet had mana, she could keep going, so she continued to enhance more.
Success!
Name: Wolf Pelt +8
Quality: Exceptional
Effect: Much stronger than normal Wolf Pelts, immunity to cold and slashing, reflects a small amount of damage back at the attacker
Garnet tried again.
Failure! Skill level is too low.
Garnet decided to bring it to Peter to see how much it was worth. "Hey long time no see," said Garnet as she entered Peter's shop. It was bigger now.
"Your friend isn't with you?" asked Peter.
"No, she's in Antium doing some work," said Garnet. "I came here because I want you to take a look at this," said Garnet as she took out the Wolf Pelt.
"That's just a Wolf Pelt," said Peter. "It's not worth much."
"I want you to take a closer look and see if you can spot anything different about it," said Garnet. "It's not normal Wolf Pelt."
"Alright, one second," said Peter as he took out a monocle. He first began by feeling the entire pelt from top to bottom. He stretched it a little before taking a closer look with the monocle. "This is a very high quality wolf pelt, where did you find something like this?" asked Peter.
"I made it," said Garnet.
Peter immediately closed the doors and windows. "How?" asked Peter. "How did you make something like this?"
"I used a technique I learned involving magic," said Garnet.
"You must not tell anyone that you can do this," said Peter. He had a worried look on his face.
"Why is it that bad?" asked Garnet.
"Quality furs like this make extremely strong armor," said Peter. "There are people who will kill to get their hands on something like this because they are insanely rare."
"How are they rare if you can make them out of normal Wolf Pelts?" asked Garnet.
"Something of this high quality is only from a creature that is powerful because it has fed off of magic from either people it killed or because it absorbed it from the environment," said Peter. "You must promise me you won't tell anyone that you can make this alright?"
"I promise," said Garnet. If it was as rare as Peter said it was, then it would be dangerous to let people know she could make such a thing.
"But, because this is valuable, I will pay you for this if you're going to sell it," said Peter.
"How much?" asked Garnet.
Peter thought about it for a second. "Fifty per square meter," he said.
"Fifty silver?" asked Garnet.
"Oh no, fifty gold," said Peter.
"Fifty gold?!?" shouted Garnet.
"Why do you think those clothes you got before were about eighty a piece?" asked Peter. "That's because good materials are hard to come by and very expensive."
Garnet had dozens of similar items in her inventory right now. She had also given away a few at the guild for a significantly lower price and wanted to bash her head against the wall for doing such a thing. "How much do you want?" asked Garnet.
"How much do you have?" asked Peter.
Garnet whispered to him, "About forty pieces of Boar Hide and Wolf Pelts of similar quality."
"What?!?" shouted Peter. "I can only take a few square meters off of you at best."
"It's alright," said Garnet. "I'll give you some for helping me with this."
"Thank you very much," said Peter. He took out about a hundred gold coins.
Garnet gave Peter about five of each, worth about three times as much as that. She stood there was Peter looked at each one closely, amazed by it. "I'll leave you alone for now," said Garnet.
"How can I reach you?" asked Peter. "If you can continue to supply me with things like this, I can make quite a bit of money."
"I thought it was not a good idea to let people know, wouldn't they come after you if they knew you had a supplier?" asked Garnet.
"Don't assume that I cannot defend myself," said Peter. "Tailoring skills can be just as deadly as knife skills."
A tailor used a lot of sharp and blunt objects after all. Peter could most likely hold his own in a fight. Garnet pictured what Peter would look like armed with a pair of scissors and a mallet to strike down his foes. It was silly, but knowing how skilled Peter was with his hands and his tools, it was a real possibility. "Never mind," said Garnet. "I live in a small house on the West side that is marked with Duke Wellington's crest, just come look for me there or leave a note or something."
"I will," said Peter as he continued to analyze the hides and pelts. "If you can find me silk of this quality, I can make something even greater!"
Silk was going to be expensive. After all, it was a material from the far east. Even Duchess Kiko's Kimono was just an imitation made of similar materials. The real thing was too expensive and too hard to get normally.
For now, Garnet decided to just take another look at the Guild. She at least did not have to worry a lot about money for now. With a hundred gold coins, she could live decently for a while. When she walked in, there was a commotion.
At the front desk was a large elderly man who was at least seven feet tall. He was shouting. "I want to know who supplied those Wolf Pelts!" he shouted.
The receptionist at the desk made eye contact with Garnet who had just walked in. "I told you, I cannot reveal that information," said the receptionist. "You can submit a request and if the person wishes to reveal themselves, then they can."
The elderly man slammed his face at the transparent wall that separated the receptionist and the outside. BANG. "You will tell me!"
The elderly man was very strong. No one dared to stop him.
Name: Dan
Level: 52
Class: Warrior
Sub-class: Leatherworker
Stats: High Strength, High Dexterity
He was on par in level with the nobles, but his stats were most likely much higher if he had been a fighter until recently.
Garnet walked up behind him in line. "Are you done yet mister?" she asked.
"NO!" Dan shouted as he turned around. He looked confused before he looked down and saw Garnet who had her hands against her ears. "Oh I'm sorry little girl," said Dan. His personality suddenly changed. "Are you lost?"
"I'm just here to look for work," said Garnet. "I'll wait till you're done."
Dan calmed down and filled out the paperwork for the request and handed it to the receptionist. "Thank you," said the receptionist. Dan then walked away. During this whole time, he maintained his calmness and posture. The man was very frightening to everyone else.
"Next," said the receptionist.
Garnet walked up. "Isn't he scary?" she asked.
"He's not the first to do that and won't be the last," said the receptionist. "But thank you for that."
"I have a special gift to make people listen to me," said Garnet. "Why was he looking for me?"
"He saw that the Wolf Pelts that you submitted were of exceptionally high quality," said the receptionist. "He wanted to get more, but the only way to do so is often to find the original person who supplied it. With something like the Guild that acts as an intermediary, it is nearly impossible unless you step up and even then, there's a chance it will be a fake."
"Why did you not tell him?" asked Garnet.
"Because we have rules and procedures," said the receptionist. "We match requests with people who can do them and that's it, we will not reveal information unless it is absolutely necessary, such as for things like bodyguard work."
"I see," said Garnet. "So, is there more work suited for me?"
"Not today, sorry," said the receptionist.
"By the way, what's your name?" Garnet asked.
"My name is Hagel," said the receptionist.
"I'm Garnet, it's nice to meet you," Garnet responded.
"I look forward to working with you," said Hagel.
Looking for suitable work at the lower ranks was going to be tough, she really needed a fast way to move up. "Do you know of any ways to move up the rankings faster?" Garnet asked.
"There's one," said Hagel. "Wait for the King to sponsor and Expedition that anyone can join."
"An Expedition sponsored by the King?" Garnet asked.
"It's a quest that involves a large group of people that want to take on a strong creature that no one else wants to deal with," said Hagel. "Around here, it's usually something like a dragon or some type of giant poisonous creature like a scorpion. If your contributions are recognized, then you will be rewarded with not only a higher rank, but a fair amount of money as well, far more than what you get from collecting pelts and hides as long as you pass their qualification test."
"What's the qualification test?" asked Garnet.
"It's just a test of strength or skill," said Hagel. "If you're strong enough, you can go."
"When is there going to be one?" asked Garnet.
"I'm not sure, but just check back frequently," said Hagel.
"I will," said Garnet. With this, she had a clue on how to make significant progress. She just had to wait for the King to sponsor an Expedition.
