Book 3: Chapter 022 - The Execution Grounds

Have to teach a cooking class this week as well, so a little slow on the releases. I'll try to get three chapters out before Sunday. No guarantees though.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Over the next few days, Garnet and Zedd watched as gallows were being assembled in front of the castle. This was where Duke Gray was planning to kill those who did not support his cause. In the corner of her eye, she spotted Baron Gray, who was overseeing the completion. He was wearing much fancier clothes than before. They were a dark green with outlines of white and three slashes across each arm. There were about three dozen soldiers who were working to build the gallows.

Garnet caught Baron Gray looking at her several times, but he did not speak up. It was either because he still did not dare to or because he did not recognize the much younger Garnet. Either way, Garnet did not care and Zedd was there to protect her if something did happen.

Public executions were used to send a message, often as a way to discourage certain behaviors. For Duke Gray, it was to silence opposition to him. Garnet realized that this scene looked quite familiar. It was when the invading army would present important prisoners in front of the enemy castle before executing them as a way of trying to lure out the defending army. The strange thing was that Duke Gray was killing nobles that should have been fighting under him. This would only provoke more rebellion among some of the people and might cause his own soldiers to defect if they were loyal to the executed nobles and not Duke Gray.

A few days earlier, Zedd had spoken to Garnet about what to do.

"On the day of the execution, I want you to transform and land straight into the execution grounds after the first execution," said Zedd.

"Why after the first?" asked Garnet.

"I want you to make it look like King Arnold was the one who brought the monster," said Zedd. "The first group of nobles will have to die."

"I want to save as many as I can," said Garnet.

"Then you will have to make up some excuse as to why you are there," said Zedd. "But you have to make sure that King Arnold is the one blamed for luring the monstrous you to the city."

"So the purpose of this is to burden King Arnold with more problems?" asked Garnet.

"Yes," said Zedd. "And make sure you make a show of it."

"Make a show?" asked Garnet. "What do you mean?"

"Speak loudly and direct people's attention to certain things," said Zedd. "For example, 'I came to taste some fresh blood' while pointing at the bodies of the executed. Emphasize certain words in your speech, do an evil laugh, use that scream of yours. All of these work."

"That sounds silly," said Garnet.

"It doesn't matter how it sounds," said Zedd. "What matters is what the people feel, and they need to feel that King Arnold is the one that brought forth a terrifying monster to the city."

As Garnet looked over the execution grounds, she was thinking about how to do this. Getting in and out of the city was easy. Killing these weak soldiers were easy. Finding an excuse and showboating was not easy. In her mind, she played through different things that she could do.

In order to grab people's attention, when she lands, she should kill a soldier, making it look like it was very easy for her to kill and she would do it without a second thought. That was as far as she got. In terms of what to say, she had no idea yet. Luckily, there was still some time as construction on the gallows would take a few days and it will take even longer to make sure that enough people showed up to watch the execution.

"Anything good come to mind?" asked Zedd.

"Nope," said Garnet.

"How about 'I'm going to pleasure myself with your blood'?" asked Zedd.

"That sounds like something a dirty old man would say," said Garnet.

"Maybe you should ask Duke Wellington to help?" Zedd suggested. "I'm sure he can think of something."

"Maybe," said Garnet. She decided to give it a try. She headed back to the Duke's manor.

As Garnet arrived outside the manor, she only saw some soldiers doing drills and running back and forth. They were still training. The actual battle was still a long way away. She headed to the Duke's office inside the main house. There was Duke Wellington sitting at the desk quickly writing away.

"What are you doing?" asked Garnet.

"How about I haven't seen you in a week my dear?" said Duke Wellington.

"It is good to see you again," said Garnet as she hugged Duke Wellington.

"What brings you here?" asked Duke Wellington. "I heard from Zedd that you were working hard in Antium."

"I need you to help me more intimidating," said Garnet.

"You, intimidating?" said Duke Wellington as he laughed. "That's impossible for someone as small as you."

"Transform: Temptress of the Night!" Garnet rolled around on the floor.

"Hey are you okay?" asked Duke Wellington.

Black wings sprouted from Garnet's back as her skin blackened. When Garnet finished transforming, she looked at Duke Wellington who had his back against the wall. "How about now my dear?" asked Garnet.

Duke Wellington was visibly frightened by Garnet's appearance. It seemed like no matter who saw her in this form, they were always afraid of her to some degree. "What happened to you?" asked Duke Wellington.

"Remember the Siren?" asked Garnet. "I managed to take their power for my own when my blood mixed with theirs."

"That was why you were in bed for so long," said Duke Wellington.

"I recovered when I learned to control the transformation," said Garnet. "I want to use this form to intimidate Duke Gray and make it look like he is responsible for bringing a monster to Antium."

"So you need my help for what?" asked Duke Wellington.

"I may look intimidating, but I do not sound intimidating," said Garnet. "I want you to help me with that."

"Have you tried to laugh?" asked Duke Wellington.

"HAHAHAHAHAHA," Garnet laughed as best as she could.

"No," said Duke Wellington. "Mwahahahaha."

"MWAHAHAHAHAHA," Garnet tried laughing again. COUGH. She had to stress her throat.

"Better," said Duke Wellington. "It's hard for you to make that deep of a voice, but it will do."

"What about choice of words?" asked Garnet.

"Talk about blood and death a lot I guess," said Duke Wellington.

"Like what?" asked Garnet.

"Tonight I will dine on someone's blood," said Duke Wellington. "So who is it going to be?"

"That sounds very bad," said Garnet. "That sounds like someone Zedd would say."

"It isn't the choice of words that makes it intimidating," said Duke Wellington. "It's how they feel."

"That's exactly what Zedd said!" Garnet exclaimed.

"Because visuals are far scarier," said Duke Wellington. "As long as you can maintain that illusion, it should be enough."

"Thank you," said Garnet.

"You're not going to do anything too dangerous are you?" asked Duke Wellington.

"No," said Garnet.

Duke Wellington got close to hug Garnet. "You feel weird," said Duke Wellington.

"You should have waited for me to change back," said Garnet.

"It doesn't matter what you look like to me," said Duke Wellington. "As long as you're you, that's good enough for me."

"Thank you," said Garnet.

"Your skin feels kind of rough," said Duke Wellington.

"That's cause I have scales," said Garnet.

"Have you thought about how many more kids you might want?" asked Duke Wellington.

Garnet immediately pushed him away. "This is not the time for it," said Garnet. "Besides you need to maintain your image with Duchess Kiko."

"I know," said Duke Wellington. "But remember that you are my wife and that there will be a place for you no matter what."

"I know," said Garnet.

"I just wish that you could have been Queen," said Duke Wellington.

"Not everything works out all the time," said Garnet. "But just promise me that you won't have a bunch of women around. Ruby's stories really worried me."

"That was the young me," said Duke Wellington. "Before I became Duke. Since then, I've mostly stopped and when Ruby came, I did my best to stop and I eventually did."

"I know," said Garnet. She kissed Duke Wellington before stepping back. "Transformation!"

Garnet collapsed on the floor as she transformed again. "Don't tell anyone about that appearance," said Garnet.

"If I did, I don't think anyone would even believe me," said Duke Wellington.

"I have one more thing to ask," said Garnet.

"What is it?" asked Duke Wellington.

Garnet handed Duke Wellington some of Zedd's Summoning Circle Talismans. "Place this somewhere near you so I can reach you in case of an emergency," said Garnet.

"I will," said Duke Wellington.

So, the most important thing was to at least seem scary. What Garnet had to say did not really matter as long as she could look scary to everyone else. Even though Zedd's lines seemed silly at first, it was still the right thing to do. Garnet Teleported back to Zedd's Workshop and began to practice her lines. This was all she could do was practice until the execution date and then try to stop it. She emphasized development of certain behaviors to make it seem like she was more animal than human.

New Skill: Partial Transformation (Level 1)

You are now able to transform individual parts of your body and do not have to transform entirely.

Stat Increase: Charisma +1

It was finally the day of the execution. The gallows were set up right in front of the castle. The goal, to silence all opposition to King Arnold by executing the nobles who did not agree with Duke Gray's self proclamation. There were about two dozen nobles and their families present. They were locked in cages that were pulled along by horses. As they paraded through the streets of Antium, various soldiers announced that there was going to be an execution and people were to gather in front of the castle to witness it.

Garnet headed to the outside of the city to transform. In addition, she summoned everything that she could. "Call: Nuria! Call: Mazu! Call: Lilith! Call: Skeletons! Call: Skeletal Hounds" Together with Garnet, they numbered eleven.

"I was almost worried you weren't ever going to call me out," said Mazu.

"How about me?" asked Lilith. "I haven't been summoned in years!"

"We're going to scare some people today," said Garnet. "It's best to leave the armored soldiers injured rather than dead."

"The hounds and skeletons will follow Lilith and intimidate the city from outside the West Gate," said Garnet. "The rest of us will go in directly to the execution ground."

"What do we do?" asked Nuria.

"Attack any soldier who gets too close," said Garnet. "If a civilian gets too close, just push them away or let me do it."

"Alright," said Nuria. "Let's go!"

"Our goal is to make it look like Duke Gray or King Arnold or whatever he calls himself look like he is unable to keep the city safe," said Garnet.

From there, she flew towards Antium. Nuria and Mazu were both able to fly after her despite Mazu not having wings or any sign that she could fly before. When the sun was almost directly overhead, she flew upwards and over the city. The streets were not empty though. There were people who did not go to see the execution. After all, death by hanging was fairly gruesome. The soldiers were gathering some people and pushing them to attend though. After all, it would be pointless if there were not enough witnesses.

King Arnold stood on top of the gallows preparing his speech. His voice was being amplified by one of his mages. Zedd, Kirk, and Klarth stood in front of the castle with some guards in case anyone tried to attack the castle or force their way. Just behind the gallows were four carriages. Each one had a noble and their family in it. Surrounding the whole place were probably two hundred or so of King Arnold's soldiers in ornate equipment. The whole thing was made to be a ceremony. King Arnold was using them to display his wealth and power, quite contradictory to what he claimed he was standing for.

"People, listen to your new King!" shouted King Arnold. "The noblemen who stand before you are the traitors who have stolen your money!"

There were boos from the crowd. "Their punishment, is death!" said King Arnold. "Bring forth the first group!" he shouted.

"Are you sure she will be here to stop this?" Klarth whispered to Zedd.

"Don't worry, she'll be here," said Zedd.

"I don't see her anywhere," said Kirk.

"You won't be able to miss her," said Zedd. "She will be the angel that descends from the sky to stop this."

Garnet watched as a few of the soldiers began to take out the first noble and his family. He had three kids that were very young. The whole family of five were all to be executed. For her plan to work, she would have to trust Zedd and his knowledge.

SCREECH. Garnet used her Sonic Scream as she circled above them. The goal was to imitate what a crow did. Circling above a site where people were going to die and feast on the remains.

Zedd looked up. "She's here," he said.

Kirk and Klarth looked up to see where it came from. Far above in the sky, was a humanoid figure with wings circling above. It was slowly getting closer as it circled.

"What's that?" shouted someone in the crowd who pointed up. A lot of people suddely started looking up in the sky.

SCREECH. Garnet used her Sonic Scream as she dove straight for the empty ground between the people and the soldiers.

"It's coming straight for us!" shouted someone in the crowd. The people all began to move backwards.

BOOM. Garnet landed. With pitch black scales covering her body, long white hair, and eyes as black as the night with pupils as red as blood, people did not know whether to awe her beautiful or cower in fear. Around her was a ball of fire and a ball of water. Beneath her feet, the ground fell into a small crater and the stones underneath were all smashed. The soldiers and the people all began to move backwards.

"Looks like I was a few minutes too early for dinner," said Garnet as she looked around.

"What is that?" asked Klarth.

"That's Garnet," Zedd whispered. "But it must not be known."

"I'm not leaving until I've had my fill of blood," said Garnet as she looked at the crowd. She then turned to the soldiers, the gallows, and then finally to King Arnold. "If I don't get my fill, then the King will have to pay for it with his own blood."

Name: Arnold Gray

Level: 58

Class: Titan / Duke

Sub-class: Defender

Stats: High Vitality

"If you're our King, do something about the monster!" shouted someone in the crowd.

Garnet looked at King Arnold. He was extremely nervous and sweating. Her aura was terrifying to most people. "Guards, seize her!" he shouted.

"Have it your way," said Garnet. "Nuria, Mazu, come to me!" The ball of fire and the ball of water around Garnet began to take humanoid forms. The three of them stood before two hundred soldiers. Their highest level was fifteen. The average was only ten. They were barely a match for the old Garnet.

Unauthorized reproduction: this story has been taken without approval. Report sightings.

Three women stood before two hundred soldiers who created a semi-circle around them, but the soldiers were not prepared for battle, they were prepared for a ceremony. As great as they appeared to be, their equipment was not mean for fighting. "If you don't want to die, then get out of my way!"

"Air Bullet!" Garnet released a powerful burst of wind that knocked over one of the soldiers in the front that was charging at her. She began to make her way through towards King Arnold.

"Die monster!" shouted one of the soldiers as he ran straight towards Garnet. Many of the other soldiers were all immobilized by her Aura of Fear.

Garnet raised her hand and grabbed the soldier's ornate sword. With a twist of her hand, the whole sword snapped hin two. "Lightning Palm!" With a single strike, the soldier fell to the ground.

"This is by far the weakest King I've ever seen," said Garnet. "Are you even sure you're a King?" Garnet asked. She saw that King Arnold gritted his teeth. He was mad that she was challenging his claim to the throne.

"Go!" said King Arnold as he looked at the mage to his side. A good mage was usually stronger than a dozen soldiers.

Name: Aaron

Level: 10

Class: Wind Mage

Sub-Class: None

Stats: ???

The mage did not even have a high stat that stood out. He probably was not a good one.

"Air Pike!" shouted the mage as he launched a blast of wind at Garnet.

Garnet raised her arm. VWOOM. "Air Bullet!" The wind was scattered and knocked over some of the people around her. It had no effect thanks to her Mana Armor. "So the mighty King sends forth his underlings to do his dirty work huh?" said Garnet. "You're no King. Your men at the gate are probably dead by now as well."

"What?!?" shouted Kirk. "Then this city is in danger!"

"Shh," whispered Zedd. "I doubt she will do any serious damage and is doing something for show."

"Not coming down?" asked Garnet. "Then I'll make you come down!" Garnet dashed towards the soldiers in front of her. "Air Bullet!" She alternated releases of Air Bullet with each of her arms to cleave a straight line towards the gallows.

Level Up: Air Bullet (Level 4)

When Garnet reached the base of the Gallows, all of the other soldiers kept their distance from her. They knew that they were no match for her. "Wind Palm!" With a powerful burst of wind, Garnet pushed over the gallows and the whole thing collapsed onto the ground. Many people saw it as her raw strength because they did not know that she was using wind magic.

The executioner who was the only other person on the gallows besides the King was caught under it. King Arnold himself had jumped back. "The mighty King has fallen behind," said Garnet. "What a pity."

"I'll fight you myself!" shouted King Arnold. Someone had brought his armor, sword, and shield. They were obviously of high quality and shined brightly. However, it also meant that the items were more likely to be ornate than practical. Ornate items are not only weak, but they are not durable. The only purpose they serve is for ceremonial purposes. Someone who was used to fighting would have brought out something more practical.

Name: Ceremonial Blade

Quality: High

Effect: Charisma +20, Damage Dealt -90%, Bonus Skill: Allure

Name: Ceremonial Armor

Quality: High

Effect: Charisma +10, Damage Received -10%

Name: Ceremonial Shield

Quality: High

Effect: Damage Received -10%, Immunity to attacks that ignore armor and defense

The shield at least had some uses, but the sword was practically pointless when it came to a fight since it would not deal any damage. It would have been better to just punch someone directly than to use that sword.

"Blood Absorption!" The corpse of the executioner and a soldier bursted into blood and flowed into Garnet's body. "UGH," Garnet moaned. "That feels so good," she said as she licked her finger.

Level Up: Blood Absorption (Level 7)

The crowd was visibly frightened now. After all, she had devoured two people in an instant, turning them into blood and left no trace of them behind. It was frightening to see. Even Klarth and Kirk were frightened by this.

"Die monster!" shouted King Arnold as he dove straight for Garnet.

Garnet took her Damascus Sword out of her Inventory. To others, it would appear as if it appeared out of nowhere. Garnet saw that her sword was also wrapped in her Mana Armor. It applied to everything that was considered to be a part of her. It was another thing she did in order to make it seem like she was something beyond impossible.

CLANG. Garnet's sword came into contact with King Arnold's. She felt the pressure and actually had to take a step back to withstand the attack. King Arnold was very strong, but Garnet's transformation was able to withstand it. With the buff provided by her transformation and the reduction of King Arnold's stats thanks to her Aura of Fear, it was possible.

Zedd had said it would be easy. For some reason, the nobles were not very strong fighters. According to Zedd, it was because they did not have practical combat experience despite their stats. Their skills were probably mostly stuck at level one due to lack of use while Garnet who was in numerous fights constantly got stronger from stat gains and skill level ups in additional to her normal level gains. Chances are, a level 40 guard who is constantly working and training would be much stronger than King Arnold right now.

Garnet drove her left palm towards King Arnold. "Explosive Palm!" BOOM. A powerful explosion knocked King Arnold a few steps back. Despite its power, King Arnold withstood the attack. He was definitely not someone weak.

Level Up: Explosive Palm (Level 3)

"Blood Bind!" Several tentacles of red erupted from the ground and wrapped around King Arnold's arms and legs. His speed and strength was severely hampered by this spell. It took him several seconds to get up. Yet, he still could still slowly walk towards Garnet. This gave her a chance to taunt King Arnold some more. "I got this sword from a King to the West," said Garnet. "Now that I think about it, you are a joke compared to him, not even worth my time."

"How dare you!" shouted King Arnold. "I am King Arnold Gray, no monster can stop me,"

"You're in no position to resist or protect your people," said Garnet.

"Help me!" shouted King Arnold as he faced Zedd.

Kirk and Klarth both drew their swords, but Zedd raised his arms to stop them. "The monster is not after the castle nor the people here," said Zedd. "It has not harmed anyone except for in self defense and I do not intend to antagonize it. To antagonize it here would endanger all of the people here and I am sure that she will be able to kill at least a few thousand in the time it takes me to bring her down."

In other words, Zedd was not going to help unless Garnet attacked the people of Antium straight on. "HAHA," laughed Garnet.

"What's so funny?" asked King Arnold.

Garnet looked at King Arnold on the ground and walked toward him. "You claim to be a King, yet your people do not support you," said Garnet. "You can't even protect your own people. You're no King, you're a pretender."

"I've had my fill of blood for now," said Garnet. "If you had royal blood in you, maybe I would consider devouring you as well. Maybe I'll be back for more later when you do become King." Garnet turned around and flew into the sky with the ball of fire and ball of water around her. They did not even have to do anything.

There was one more thing Garnet wanted to do before she left. To show her power, she would break down the West Gate and make it easier for someone like Duke Innes to invade.

Garnet dove straight for the gate. "Explosive Palm!" Garnet crashed straight into the gate. BOOM. Shards of wood splintered outward. The bottom section of the gate was now just a hole. As she turned around to face the gate from the outside, she saw numerous soldiers who were standing at the battlements facing Lilith and the squad of skeletons. The only damage was to some of the stones on the wall. There was no significant damage to the wall itself.

Garnet noticed that there were a lot of arrows near the skeletons and Lilith. The soldiers guarding the gate had fired on them, but they could not reach. Her horse along with her skeletons just stood there to intimidate them.

"Dismiss!" In an instant, all of them disappeared as Garnet flew away into the distance.

Back at the execution ground, Zedd continued to watch King Arnold as he struggled to break free from Garnet's Blood Bind. All of King Arnold's plans were ruined by the appearance of a single monster. "You did this!" shouted King Arnold as he pointed at Zedd.

"It's not my fault you let that monster walk all over you," said Zedd. "I told you, my duty is maintaining the throne, if I picked a fight with a monster that you could not beat, it might have killed thousands of people."

Kirk and Klarth were surprised that Zedd was talking like that to King Arnold. They were whispering to each other. The crowd was still paralyzed in fear. They all stood by and listened to King Arnold and Zedd argue.

"You can't speak that way to a King!" shouted King Arnold.

"I told you," said Zedd. "You're no King until at least two of the other Dukes recognize you as one."

"Are you sure its okay to antagonize him like that?" asked Klarth.

"I'm only stating the truth," said Zedd. "Antium has rules, traditions, and procedures that need to be followed. It is my duty to ensure that they are followed and someone who is worthy of the throne takes it. Otherwise, we will just have another Caligula on our hands. If King Arnold wishes it to be changed, he can once he properly obtains the position. Until then, the throne is still waiting for the recognized King."

"Help clean up that mess!" Klarth ordered as he pointed to the gallows that were now just broken pieces of wood. A few of the castle guards began to disassemble the remaining pieces.

"The rest of you, go back to your business," said Kirk. "We'll take care of it from here. As long as Duke Gray does not provoke the monster, you should stay safe."

"Nice job," said Zedd.

"What?" asked Kirk.

"Not only did you reinforce the blame placed on King Arnold, you also made it sound like he was responsible for the whole thing," said Zedd.

Meanwhile, Garnet flew off into the forest. When she saw that no one had followed her, she returned to her normal form.

"I didn't even get to do anything," said Nuria.

"That's fine," said Mazu.

"It means that I did not even have to use my full power," said Garnet. "And they know it."

"That seemed to easy though," said Nuria.

"I know," said Garnet. "I only know about his Magitech Cannon, but I feel like he is hiding a lot more."
