So, now that my finger actually healed mostly and I can type normally, I actually finished this chapter. The reason for the delay was that I also have to plan for the summer classes that I have to teach as well (Beginning English and World History), so I have to start spending time on that as well.
Update about Book 7 description since the content is way different from my original outline that I posted a while back.
Spoiler :
A lot has changed since I first planned this book, so the descriptions are way off if you looked at my first Book 5 to 8 plan. The purpose of most of this major arc is to push Garnet to desire power, but not to get too out of control with it. She's already willing to sacrifice other people to her Revenants if she can catch them. The problem is that she sees starting to see things as either "allies" or "enemies" and treats them accordingly.
This chapter marks the beginning of Book 7 of which only the first two chapters take place in another world. So far, we've only seen the impact of one Invasion that was fairly easily defeated in Garnet's world, and not the others. What happens when an Invasion is actually successful will most likely be explored in the late third or maybe early fourth major arc. The third major arc will most likely take place in the Eastern Empire as Garnet attempts to find out how they've held off against such powerful Invasions for so long. The key person to this will be Xiaomei who will defect from the Dark Mages when she realizes that Garnet's true goal is to fight the Invasions, not other people. The current plan is for Garnet, Riley, Zedd, and Xiaomei to travel to the Eastern Empire together after all the major problems have been dealt with.
Of course, plans always change.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The moment Garnet stepped through the portal, she heard a high pitch voice. "Humans!" it shouted.
Garnet saw what appeared to be a humanoid snow leopard. "Humans!" it continued to shout as it ran away from them.
Garnet took a look around. They were in the middle of a fairly flat land with sparse trees scattered in every direction. It looked like some of the unpopulated areas of her own world. It was hard to believe that this was another world considering it looked so similar to some of the forested areas of her own. Zedd was sitting on the ground with his legs crossed. "Shouldn't we be looking for the four leaders?" Garnet asked.
"Wait for someone to greet us," said Zedd. "We don't want to cause any more panic than we already did coming here."
Garnet sat down next to Zedd. "What is this place?" she asked.
"This is a world that is mostly populated by different humanoids with animal characteristics," Zedd replied. "They have become humanoid like us over time, resulting in creatures like the one you just saw."
Garnet stood back up to take a quick look around the vicinity. As far as she could see, it was a field with a few sparsely placed trees. "Who are we waiting for?" Garnet asked as she continued to look around.
"A humanoid bear by the name of Lance," said Zedd.
"How do you know this guy?" Garnet inquired.
"I found him our world a long time ago," said Zedd. "He was hurt, so I patched him up and sent him on his way. He gave me that cube so that I could visit him at his home. I came here a few times though I only met with Lance once or twice."
Before long, Garnet could sense several things approaching them. "Something is coming," Garnet warned Zedd.
"Relax," said Zedd. "They're just taking precautions."
Numerous different humanoid figures surrounded them. Garnet saw what appeared to be a humanoid cat and a large rhino. Both stood up on two feet.
Name: Natalie
Level: 29
Class: Druid
Sub-Class: Monk
Stats: High Dexterity
Name: Paul
Level: 30
Class: Warrior
Sub-Class: Titan
Stats: High Strength
Garnet could see their stats like anyone else. There were others among them. "Is that you Zedd?" asked the humanoid bear as it stepped forward.
Name: Lance
Level: 40
Class: Titan
Sub-Class: Monk
Stats: High Strength, High Vitality
The bear had black fur and round ears. It was enormous and was easily twice the height of Garnet. It wore a large ragged brown shirt and pants that were torn in multiple spots.
"Long time no see," said Zedd.
"It's okay everyone," said Lance as he grabbed Zedd for a hug. He picked Zedd up off the ground.
"You can stop now," said Zedd as Lance continued to hold him off the ground.
"What brings you here today?" Lance asked.
"I brought her here to see the great spirits," said Zedd as he looked at Garnet.
Lance took a quick look at Garnet. "Don't you think she's too young for the trials?" Lance asked.
"The people of your village do it at a much younger age don't they?" Zedd asked.
"That's because they're born and raised here with the intention to take the trial," said Lance. "You people are not, which is why you failed."
"But unfortunately, I'm afraid we don't have a choice," said Garnet. "I need to complete it to become stronger."
Lance's expression changed. "Come to my place," he said as he began to walk.
Garnet and Zedd followed him. Some of the others were still suspicious of her and Zedd. "If you're just here for power, you should turn back now," said Lance.
"Why?" Garnet asked.
"The great spirits do not offer their help to those who just desire power," said Lance.
"Power isn't my goal, it's a means to my goal," said Garnet.
"People say that, but the great spirits will read your heart and see through your lies," Lance warned.
The group arrived at a small city filled with humanoid creatures. There were some who were like animals and others that were like elementals. Garnet could not help but stare at all the people and places around her. The animals and elementals stared at her and Zedd as well. Both were seeing rare or new things.
The city barely qualified as one. It consisted mostly of small huts with only one large stone building on top of a huge mount of dirt in the middle of the city. Most of them were small houses constructed of perishable materials like sticks and straw. There were perhaps only one or two stone or wooden buildings that she passed by. A few had even chosen to build their homes underground instead.
Lance's house was relatively small. It was constructed from a mound of dirt and mud that was stacked together with bags and metal wires to hold them together. The entrance was like a cave. "Come, sit," said Lance. "I want to talk with you for a bit."
Zedd and Garnet sat down across from Lance. Zedd gestured to Lance to go ahead. "Do you know what the trial is?" Lance asked.
"No," Garnet replied. "I was just told that it is a way to become stronger if I succeed."
"It does grant you power if you can do what the spirits ask," Lance confirmed. "However, most people fail because their reasons are ultimately selfish."
"All desire for power is selfish," said Garnet. "If I am selfish for trying to protect what is important to me, then so be it. But, I think the real question is what you want to do with that power."
"Interesting," said Lance. "I'll bring you to the great spirits, but there's no telling what they will think of it."
"Thank you," Garnet replied.
"I'm not the one who makes the final decision," said Lance. "The great spirits are."
For some reason, Garnet felt terrified by how Lance spoke of the great spirits. They sounded like monsters who could read and understand everything about her and judged everyone who approached them. "When can I meet the great spirits?" Garnet asked.
"In due time," said Lance. "For now, take some time to look around the village."
"Is it okay?" Zedd asked. "Aren't you worried?"
"Things have changed since the last time you were here," Lance explained. "They're more tolerant now and less likely to cause trouble now that we have travelers from different worlds as well though there is a tendency to dislike humans like you."
Garnet could not help but worry. "Are you not afraid of someone attacking you?"
"The great spirits have protected us many times," said Lance. "Even those Invasions that Zedd has been so afraid of has been stopped by them before."
"What?!?" Garnet was surprised by this information. "The great spirits can stop an Invasion by themselves?"
"They've taken it upon themselves to protect this world," said Lance. "When we were attacked, they could no longer stand idling by and decided to take an active approach."
"So that's why you haven't had any problems," said Zedd. "The great spirits are extremely powerful after all."
"Anyways, I'm going to go meet with the great spirits and see if they are willing to meet you," said Lance. "Take some time to look around. I'll be back here with any news in a bit."
Zedd went outside and Garnet followed after him. "Where are you going?" she asked.
"To look around," said Zedd. "It's been a long time since I've been here."
As Garnet made her way around the village, there were no other humans besides her and Zedd. Most of them were some animal like humanoids, such as alligators that stood on two feet. Garnet was getting the same looks from the inhabitants. To them, she was the strange one. Zedd seemed to pay no attention to them and continued walking around. "I never knew there were places like this," said Garnet.
"If you ever travel the world, you will find other strange places as well, but this is a different world entirely," said Zedd.
"It looks very similar to ours though," said Garnet.
"That's because life is only possible on worlds with certain environments," Zedd explained. "If it's too different, then life is not possible or is very limited there."
"Have you been to worlds like that?" Garnet asked.
"A few," said Zedd. "This is the only other world I've been to multiple times."
Garnet thought about the words Assad said to her. Someday, she would have to leave her own world and join the fight against the Guides. This place gave Garnet an idea of what she was fighting for. Each world had people with their own way of life and the Invasions were disrupting that way of life.
The place resembled some of the other villages Garnet had visited before. She spotted a dog like creature cooking what appeared to be grilled lizards to sell in the market. Others had merchants selling crafted wares like pottery and plates. It was like other markets from her world. "Anything you find interesting or want to see more of?" Zedd asked.
"Not really," said Garnet. "It's surprisingly similar to our world."
"Haha," Zedd laughed. "All intelligent life has similar pursuits of what we call civilization. Their technological development here is a little behind ours though because of over a hundred years of constant warfare."
The two made their way back to Lance's home. When they returned, Lance was not back yet. Zedd sat back down and waited. Garnet was a little impatient. "Can you tell me anything about the trial?"
"I wish I knew more," said Zedd. "But I don't. Like I said, I kind of failed the moment it started when they asked me a few questions."
"What kind of creatures are the great spirits?" Garnet asked.
"There's a turtle and a snake," said Zedd. "I haven't met the other two before. Lance said one was a lion and the other was a monkey."
"Couldn't you tell what they were like?" Garnet asked.
"Nope," said Zedd. "They were very focused on me and the monkey kicked me out as soon as they didn't like my answer."
Soon after, Lance returned. "Oh you're already back," he said.
"How did it go?" Zedd asked.
"Ban has agreed to meet with you," said Lance.
"Ban?" Garnet wondered. "Who's Ban?"
"Ban is the name of the turtle spirit," said Lance.
"What about the other three?" Garnet asked.
"They have not agreed to meet you yet," said Lance. "I suggest you go see Ban immediately since if you can persuade one of them to help you, it's better than nothing."
"Then what are we sitting here for?" Garnet asked. "Let's go immediately."
Lance brought Garnet and Zedd over to a large ritual ground just outside of the city. There were four stone pillars erected in the corners. There was a single paved road that went straight into tress in the distance. The trees covered a single area entirely the other trees were still spread all around. "We're here," he said.
"What am I looking for?" Garnet asked.
Lance pointed to the road straight ahead towards the area covered with trees. "You go alone," Lance instructed.
"Alright," Garnet responded as she began to walk forward.
"We'll be waiting for you here," said Zedd.
New Quest: Trials of the Four Beasts
Gain the approval of the four beasts that live in the forest of the Cube World
Reward: New Skills
Garnet turned around and began to walk towards the only road in front of her. It was a paved dirt road that was commonly traversed. Footprints of different shapes and sizes could be seen in the ground. It was proof that there were others who walked along this path.
Once Garnet entered the cover of the trees, she began to advance slowly and careful. "You don't have to worry," said a deep yet comforting voice.
"Who's there?!?" Garnet shouted.
"It's me, Ban," said the voice.
"Where are you?" Garnet asked.
"Keep walking forward," said the voice.
Garnet continued to walk forward. In the distance, she saw a strange black hill. "Are you over there in the distance?" she asked.
"Yes," said the voice.
Garnet walked over to the black hill. There was just enough light that shine through the leaves of the trees above to create a pattern of light and darkness on the ground. As Garnet drew closer to the black hill, she realized it was not a hill.
Name: Ban
Level: 229
Class: Divine
Sub-Class: Barrier Master / Earth Guardian
Stats: ???
The hill was the turtle. It was enormous. There were even a dozen trees growing out of its back. "Do not be afraid," said Ban.
Garnet carefully approached Ban, taking a closer look at it. She noticed that there were chips in his shell on his back. It was signs of battle damage. Some parts of the shell was smoothed out as well, as if it was growing back. There were clearly defined lines on Ban's skin as well. "Thank you for meeting with me," said Garnet.
"I was interested in why a human such as yourself would risk crossing worlds to meet me," said Ban. "So why are you here?" it asked.
The trial had already started. It was seeking infromation from Garnet. On top of that, it was able to read her to a certain degree. "I want power," she said.
"Didn't Lance warn you about beeing greedy for power?" asked Ban.
"He did," Garnet replied. "But in order to accomplish my goals, I need power."
Ban began to stare down Garnet. Garnet could see her own reflection in Ban's eyes. "What are your goals?" Ban asked.
Garnet could see the head began to move around to take a good look at her. "My goal is to protect my family and myself," said Garnet.
"That's only one of your goals isn't it?" asked Ban. "I can tell there's more to it."
"There is no simple answer," Garnet replied. "I'm in danger because of my own actions and now I seek the power to protect myself from the people who are after me. Most of it is because of problems that I have caused on my own. I believe I do not have the power to face these people in battle."
The eyes of Ban squint at Garnet as if it was looking for something. "But you're not afraid," said Ban. "Why are you not afraid if someone you cannot beat is after you?"
"Because I know I will have to fight them no matter what," said Garnet. "If I cannot beat them now, I will retreat, get stronger, and fight them. If I don't, I die. With or without your help, this is something I must do."
"Is that a veiled threat?" asked Ban.
"I'm just telling you what I'm going to be doing regardless of what happens," said Garnet. "I will be fighting with those people or without your help anyways."
"But you must be desperate to seek help from something like me are you not?" asked Ban.
"Yes," Garnet answered. "I fear there is an enemy that even my friends cannot help me with."
"And what is the threat you face?" Ban asked as he looked Garnet in the eye.
"People who I believe are after me life," said Garnet.
Ban closed his eyes for a moment. "I see," it said. "But I can tell that not everyone is after your life. You've made some friends along the way, even with those that are not human. Because of this, I will help you, but it depends on whether or not you can understand."
"Thank you, I will do my best," said Garnet. At that moment, she felt something watching her. She quickly took a look over her shoulder and saw looked to be a shadow in the form of a humanoid move in the trees.
"Is something wrong?" Ban asked.
"I thought I saw something," said Garnet.
"No one else is here," Ban responded.
Garnet knew that Ban was lying. She was certain that she had felt someone watching and looking at her. For now though, she had to trust Ban. Ban was the only one that could give her power. There was nothing else she could do. "I'm ready to begin when you are," said Garnet.
"What do you draw your power from?" Ban asked.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
"Draw power from?" Garnet thought. "What do you mean?"
"Do you source your power from mana like Zedd or from something else?" Ban asked.
Ban knew about Zedd. Ban even knew that she was connected to Zedd. What surprised Garnet was the fact that Ban said "mana or something else." Were there other sources?
"What sources of power are there?" Garnet asked.
"The most common ones are either mana or chi drawn from certain points in the body," Ban explained. "However, there are others, such as those who open the chakras in their body and draw power from those. There are others who infuse their body with the marrow and blood of powerful creatures to gain their abilities. The different types are nearly limitless."
"I draw my power from mana," Garnet replied.
"Show me what you can do," Ban ordered.
"I don't want to damage this forest or hurt you," said Garnet. "Where can I use my spells?"
Ban narrowed his eyes and directed them again towards Garnet with an intense aura. "Hit me with the strongest spell you got," said Ban. "Don't worry, I'll be fine." Ban deployed a purple hexagonal barrier in front of him. It then multiplied around into a full barrier that covered the entire front half of its body.
Garnet raised her hands into the air and began to channel her mana. "Crimson Lotus: Blade of Lightning!" Just gathering it in her hands already caused the air around her to distort from the heat.
Ban deployed another barrier in the shape of a dome around the forest as well. The only spot was a single part of the top from which the energy could be vented through if needed. "For safety so it doesn't spread," it said.
Ban was still confident in its abilities. When the blade was completely formed, Garnet spoke, "Here I go!" She swung the blade downwards.
FWOOM. The flames burned everything between her and Ban. BOOM. The blade then exploded, creating a shockwave.
To Garnet's surprise, the barrier still held strong. The entire fire was contained and killed by the barriers as they collapsed around it. "Very impressive," said Ban as it lowered its barrier. "But that's not even close to what you need to fight off the Guides."
Garnet was surprised. "How did you know?" she asked.
"I know everything," said Ban. There was not a single scratch or burn mark anywhere on Ban. Garnet could now understand why Ban was not worried at all. "Did you feel anything when channeling that mana?" Ban asked.
"It feels like I'm channeling fire, wind, and lightning at the same time," Garnet replied.
"Have you wondered why your own fire doesn't seem to burn you?" Ban asked.
This had never occurred to Garnet. "No," said Garnet. "I haven't thought about it until now."
"Spells created from your own mana cannot hurt you," Ban explained. "But have you ever used those spells on yourself?"
"You mean attack myself with my own magic?" Garnet thought. "Why would I do that?"
"Observe," said Ban.
Garnet could feel an incredible amount of mana flowing out of Ban. The power suddenly turned inward towards Ban. "Earth Form." The power from it was absorbed into Ban's body. The color of Ban began to change as its black shell turned green and the cracks and gaps in it filled in. Its rough skin also turned brown and resembled stone now. There was something else coming from Ban besides mana. It was distinct enough to be separated from the mana, but Garnet could not tell what it was. It was almost as if there was another source of energy being drawn into it. The trees on his back began to bloom as fruits spawned from the trees. They were also releasing some kind of sweet nectar smell.
"That's a transformation," said Garnet.
"That is correct," said Ban. "I used my own magic on myself to transform."
"How do I do that?" Garnet asked.
"When you gather mana to cast the spell, direct it throughout your body instead," said Ban. "You cannot be hurt by your own mana as long as it is not channeled into your heart or back into your mana resevoir, so do not worry."
It was like when Garnet concentrated the bolt of lightning in her hand to create Light. This time, she would have to concentrate it throughout her own body. However, that gave Garnet an idea. Since she only needed to concentrate the mana into her body, she did not need it to flow through her body properly. She had a skill for it. She concentrated the mana into her hands for a Lightning Bolt. This time though, she did not use it for lightning. "Essence Absorption!"
New Skill: Lightning Form
Transforms your body into one of lightning. Your Agility is further increased by half of your Intelligence in this form. Cannot activate another transformation afterwards without reverting to your base form. Can be upgraded by merging with a spirit while this form is active.
MP Cost: -10% Maximum Mana while active
Garnet's entire body glowed with a yellow aura as lightning began to spark around her body. "What happened to me?"
"Impressive, you did it so quickly," said Ban. "Your body is partially comprised of lightning at this moment," Ban explained.
"Does that mean I'll die if I'm dispersed?" Garnet asked.
"It's not quite that simple," said Ban. "You're more like a spirit, a being with a limited physical form. It is possible to turn into an element entirely once you become skilled enough with it."
"This seemed a little too easy," said Garnet.
"It normally isn't that easy," said Ban. "For some reason, you were able to absorb it into yourself without much difficulty."
It was most likely due to Essence Absorption. With it, Garnet was able to take in some of the properties of anything she absorbed, even magic. "What happens if you try to absorb another person's magic?" Garnet asked.
"It is likely to overwhelm and destroy you," Ban explained. "Magic from another person destroys your body, that is why it can be so damaging to others."
That seemed to contradict Garnet's own abilities and her skill description. Under normal circumstances it would destroy her. Under the conditions granted to her by her Supernatural Body and Essence Absorption, it was theoretically possible. After all, she had absorbed corpses and took their power as her own with Blood Absorption. It would be weird if everything so far was an exception. If Essence Absorption was truly an upgrade of Blood Absorption, then it would not be a problem.
"Thank you for this," said Garnet. "With this, I might be able to keep up with those stronger than me."
"We're not done here," said Ban. "Lightning Form!" The giant turtle stacked lightning transformation on top of his earth one already and blocked off Garnet's exit. It deployed an entire dome barrier once more. Despite its size, its incredible speed with the transformation allowed it to move even faster than Garnet.
"What are you doing?!?" Garnet shouted.
"Did you think you were just going to walk out of here for free?" Ban asked.
Ban had trapped Garnet within the confines of the forest. Garnet could see streaks of lightning flowing outward from Ban's body. "Transform!" Garnet had to revert before she could transform. "Transformation: Queen of the Night! Transformation: Lightning Form!" Garnet stacked the two transformations together. Her maximum mana was significantly reduced, but her stats were increased immensely.
"Very interesting," said Ban. "I knew you were no ordinary human."
Garnet had no idea how many abilities Ban had. The barrier was probably its main ability, but the ability to grow the trees on its back and the lightning transformation were very different. She had to keep her distance from it and find an opening. However, Garnet knew she could not harm Ban. If Ban was like the other Divine creatures, it was responsible for controlling some force of nature. Hurting it would mean that it could cause damage to the world somehow.
"Barrier Cage!" Ban's barriers covered the entire area with hexagonal purple barriers began to move around Garnet, creating a cage.
It was already too late. Ban had trapped Garnet inside the barrier. "Lightning Fire Bolt!" Garnet fired a shot at one of the barriers.
PING. The shot was deflected. It bounced between different barriers before flying straight for the ground. BOOM. It created a crater on the ground. "Damn it," Garnet thought to herself. She was trapped.
Strangely enough though, Ban was not moving. Garnet kept her eye on Ban, but Ban did not try anything yet. Garnet took this chance to try to escape. She immediately moved to the area furthest from Ban and aimed straight for the barrier. "Explosive Palm!"
BOOM. The explosive power of the attack struck the barrier. Despite the force released by the blast, there was not a single crack in it. Garnet was trapped within the dome. She would have to confront Ban to escape.
As Garnet turned around to face Ban, Ban had not moved from its spot. It was still standing there, observing her. Garnet realized this was most likely another test. She had panicked when Ban turned on her. She calmed herself and took another look at Ban. Ban stood there quietly observing her. It had no intention of attacking her. This was most likely just another test to see her reaction. "Most people's first instinct is to attack me," said Ban. "Why didn't you?"
"You're a Divine type creature," Garnet replied. "You must manage some important aspect of this world. On top of that, I know I don't have the power to defeat you in any type of fight."
"You pass," said Ban as it lowered the barriers around them. "So, you realize the importance of the Divine creatures."
"What are the Divine Creatures?' Garnet asked. "I've only met two, but I've never wondered to ask."
"Divine Creatures help maintain the natural world," Ban explained. "When the Divine Creature of Earth fell, this world was thrown into chaos."
"It was slain?!?" Garnet was surprised by this. Lotan and Nian were both extremely powerful creatures. For something to slay one, it was no easy task. After all, all of them so far were at least level 100.
"Yes, by creatures that appeared from an eye in the sky," said Ban.
"Invaders," said Garnet.
"That's what you call them," Ban explained. "A large number appeared and killed Terra, the Divine Creature of Earth."
"What happened then?" Garnet asked.
"The power of the Earth was lost for a while," said Ban. "Earth magic was weakened, lands broke apart, the soil lost most of its natural productive abilities for a few years, resulting in the relatively small population that you see now."
"Then how was it fixed?" Garnet wondered.
"I rose up as the new Divine Creature of Earth," Ban replied.
"How?' Garnet asked.
"The worlds needs the Divine Creatures to maintain it," said Ban. "If one is lost, the world will attempt to support a new creature that meets the requirements fill that position."
Garnet thought about how it sounded similar to what happened with the Hero System. If the Hero was lost and another person fulfills the requirements, then that position will be filled by whoever meets the requirements except it did not require a Hero Summoning Ritual. "How does it do that?' Garnet asked. "Do they just select you?"
"I became aware of my duties in a vision," Ban explained. "I saw memories of another, one I believe to be the previous Divine Guardian."
"That doesn't explain a whole lot," said Garnet. It did sound familiar to what Riley went through with hearing voices though. Garnt remembered that a voice had spoken to Riley before, one that belonged to the previous Hero, Assad. Even with Garnet in this world though, Assad retained his Hero abilities. That brought up the question of why Riley did not retain hers though.
"I know it doesn't," said Ban. "I was just granted awareness of the situation and the abilities to bring it under control by some outside force."
The Divine Creatures may not be natural and could be artificial creations made in order to fulfill a specific purpose as well. The question was how it related to the Hero System. The two were similar, yet seemed to be very different at the same time. A Hero was chosen through man made means and only when one fulfilled the requirements would they be reborn as a Hero. Failure meant death. On the other hand, the Divine Creatures were carefully chosen by something, but what was that something? It also resembled the Guardian Contract as well. Garnet was able to choose someone or something to become a Guardian of Constantinople.
