I'm skipping the long travel from Constantinople to the Eastern Empire because I don't want another arc of the five of them just wandering to a new location. I already did that with Garnet and Riley last time and it is not going to be any different except with less action and maybe one bar fight or something.
This arc will also address some of the things that were introduced way back during the first major arc. This also marks the beginning of the third major arc. It will start to reveal the sources of the Invasion and

why the black star in the sky does not always disappear after an Invasion.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Garnet, Zedd, Riley, Xiaomei, and Quinton made their way east along the main road that connected the northwestern part of the world to the eastern. The road itself was surprisingly well maintained and highly guarded. Merchants from cities and villages all along the road traveled it. There were even frequent rest stops along the road for travelers to stop at. Compared to the journey from Anzio to Constantinople, it was safe and largely without incident.
Along the way, Xiaomei did her best to teach everyone the principles behind the usage of chi. Chi was a resource that was drawn from a different spot in the body from mana. The mana reservoir was located close to the heart while chi was stored in a place between the stomach and the heart known as the Dantian. Zedd, who had some knowledge of this from before and had learned to awaken his own chi with the help of Sunny was the first to pick up on it. Despite this, he still could not use it without proper training. However, it took Zedd a while before he got used to drawing energy from both sources. The two energies within his body intertwined and merged, greatly enhancing the quality and strength of his mana.
The key to unlocking one's chi had to deal with regulation of the different energies within the body through the control of breathing. For Garnet, this was something new and different. She was used to simply focusing an amount of power into her hands and then releasing it either all at once or at regular intervals. No matter what she did, all she could do was feel the power of mana. It coursed through her veins like her blood. It was impossible for her to separate the two since she has been at it for so long. "I hate this," said Garnet.
"Well, this is the only way I know how to explain it to you," Xiaomei responded. "But you're naturally an impatient person, which is why this is so difficult. As long as you can resist Intent though, you will be fine."
Intent was a projection of energy. It could be done with mana or chi and Garnet had used it unknowingly before as well. If you have a larger or denser amount of mana, it is possible to focus and direct it at a target, striking fear into the target and potentially incapacitate them. With Garnet's natural resistances and mana armor, it was nearly impossible for her to be affected by Intent. Simply hitting someone with Intent was often enough to weaken them significantly.
Quinton and Riley were not doing any better with their training. The two of them were still trying to even feel the energy within their body like Garnet. They already had huge amounts of mana, so identifying that trace energy proved to be extremely difficult. "Anyways, I think we should rest," said Riley. "We won't get much further when were tired like this."
"We should be at the Northern Walls by tomorrow," said Zedd.
"That black star in the sky still frightens me," said Quinton. "I can never get used to it."
Quinton was referring to the black star like the one above Constantinople that floated just above the outside the Northern Walls of the Eastern Empire. Creatures supposedly appeared from it once in a while, as Invaders attempted to break through and attack. Luckily, they have always been fought back. And because of this, the Eastern Empire had built a tradition based around worshipping and supporting strong warriors who could fight back against these creatures. Unlike the west that developed mana, the east developed chi because there were safer artificial means to boost the strength of a chi user than a mana user due to their locations in the body. The mana reservoir was close to the heart, making it easy to injure yourself if things were done wrong while the Dantian was far enough from the heart that messing up resulted in fewer negative consequences, often just a little discomfort, but it also meant that it was harder to train due to the difficulty in sensing it.
"I can't get used to it either," said Riley. "I can't believe there's another one like that outside my home too."
Unlike the Eastern Empire, Anzio and the western countries never developed a unified culture based on fighting the Invasions like the Eastern Empire did. Their focus on their individuality rather than for a common good forced them to worry about protecting themselves rather than finding a way to combat or stop the Invasions entirely. By comparison, the Eastern Empire was a united front, one that stood against the Invasions together when the time came. To do so, they sacrificed their individual goals for a collective one that guaranteed their survival. Nonetheless, they still struggled for power and influence for their own groups. Conflicts were between various schools or clans in an attempt to outdo one another.
DONG. Garnet suddenly felt something strange. As she looked outside, she saw a flash of light as blue beams of light crashed onto the ground. Something had emerged from the black star. In the distance, she saw several streaks of light. Something that appeared to be weapons as they slashed down the four legged neon creatures that had appeared from the black star. The people had instantly responded to the threat and stopped it. "What was that?" Riley asked.
"Invaders," said Garnet. "I recognized the feeling."
"The guards at the Northern Wall immediately responded to slay them," said Xiaomei who joined them. "It is their duty to ensure that no Invader ever gets past the Northern Wall."
"Has anything ever broken through the wall?" Riley asked.
"It has been broken a few times," said Xiaomei. "As big as it is, it is not impenetrable. However, the people have always been strong enough to push them back."
No new lights appeared. It was only a few small creatures that made their way through and they were instantly slain. The strange feeling that Garnet felt from the Invaders disappeared. "I'm going to get some rest," said Garnet. "I just hope nothing crazy stops us from getting through the wall."
The next day, the group headed towards the wall. As they approached, more creatures fell from the black star in the sky. Again, it was a black shadow like creature, but this time with bright red markings on it. It looked like a human, but moved around more like a spider than something human. Some of the people along the road were scared by this. Garnet could hear gasps.

"Don't worry," said Xiaomei. "The guards are always around."
The creature crawled on all fours and began charging towards the wall. As it leapt into the air, it was shot by an arrow. THUNK. The arrow struck the creature and fell down onto the ground. A man in a black and gold robe raised his white and gold sword over his dead. "Vertical Slash!"
KA-SHING. The sword drew a clear white line in the sky through the creature and onto the ground. The creature dissolved and vanished. It left no body. At the same time, it was different from when Garnet killed the natural born creatures of the world. There was a faint aura that could be felt from the creature when it was killed.
Name: Hou Tian
Level: 73
Class: Sword Dancer
Sub-Class: Cultivator
Stats: High Agility
Hou Tian turned his head to look at the people who were walking by before continuing towards the other creatures. A few others followed him from behind, in the same black and gold robe. One of them carried a bow made of white wood and a bow string coated in gold. It seemed like they dressed in specific colors. They made their way around to take out the other Invaders.
Soon after, the group made it to the wall. There was a line. "Do those things appear so often?" Garnet asked.
"No," said Xiaomei. "It's unusual for them to appear twice within such a short period of time."
Garnet realized it was probably her fault. Anna had mentioned that Garnet's attempts to send Riley back to his own world weakened the barriers between worlds, making it easier for Invaders to make their way through the walls that separated the worlds. It is likely that the creatures were appearing more often now because of Garnet. Even a few creatures every day could be frightening since some of them can destroy cities. On the other hand, it would also mean an increased source of experience that could be exploited by someone to become stronger.
"Let me and Xiaomei do the talking," said Zedd as he took out a black and gold coin.
As the group approached the checkpoint, the guards were checking for something. Xiaomei took out a small green and gold coin with a snake crest on it. It resembled the card that Garnet got from King Charles. It was likely a symbol of nobility as the moment Xiaomei showed it, they were allowed through without question.
Zedd showed his gold and black coin and the guards immediately bowed to him. The coin that Zedd had held significant meaning, enough for the guards to stop what they were doing and apologize. "I'm sorry, please forgive me," said the guard. The guard was deathly afraid.
"It's alright," said Zedd. "Lift your head. My friends and I just want to get through."
"Of course," said the guard as he stepped back to let them through.
The group moved without much trouble, but that definitely drew attention. "What was that about?" Quinton asked.
"I just helped them a while back and got it as a reward," Zedd replied. "Don't dwell on it too much."
Garnet was really curious now. What was it that Zedd did in order to earn him that much fear? It was clear that the guards were surprised by it, so it was not something common.
The group came out through the other side of the wall. In front of them was an enormous city built on top of what looked like barren land. There was very little grass to be seen. It was just an enormous city with small building the eyes could see. Even Anzio paled in comparison to the size of this city. According to Zedd, this was not even one of the ten largest cities. "Welcome to Taklamakan," said Xiaomei.
"So what now?" Riley asked. "Do we just go around asking people about Holy Grounds?"
"No," Zedd answered. "We need to find specific grounds that meet the right conditions."
"That is one that is rich in energy, but also has to be unclaimed," said Xiaomei.
"Any suggestions?" Quinton asked.
"The easiest way is to find a land in which a powerful creature resides," said Xiaomei. "So for now, we should collect information on where we might be able to find powerful creatures."
"And just like in the west, the best place to start is the local tavern," said Zedd as he led the way. "Oh and remember to stay on the side of the road, not in the middle."
Zedd had informed the group about some of the cultural practices they needed to pay attention to. Staying to the side of the road as a group is what a humble person does. Standing in the middle of the road is an attempt to display power and invited challenge. As the group walked down the main road, they saw other groups in matching clothes that walked to the side of the road as well. Their matching clothes was a symbol of their unity under a certain school. They only encountered one group that walked in the middle of the road bearing the colors of black and yellow.
Eventually, the group arrived in front of a bar. It was a little different from the ones Garnet had seen back in Anzio. This one was high end and the inside was decorated with cloth instead of wood. People sat down at tables instead of standing up next to the barkeep.
"Wait here," said Zedd as he pointed at an empty table.
The group sat down. "What did Zedd do?" Garnet asked.
"I thought you knew," Quinton replied. "You're friends with him after all right?"
"Yeah, but I didn't even know he was here before until we actually talked about it back at Constantinople," said Garnet.
"How about you?" Xiaomei asked Riley.
"I didn't know either," Riley replied.
They were all curious about what Zedd did, but no one wanted to ask directly. "Do you at least know what the coin that Zedd had meant?" Garnet asked.
"It's a token given to someone who has made a great contribution to the Eastern Empire and is officially recognized by the Emperor and is formally requested by a Viceroy of the Empire," said Xiaomei.
"So Zedd has connections here as well then," said Riley. "It might be easier to get things done than I thought then."
"Connections can't always get you everything you need," Garnet countered. "It might provide us with a little access, but it doesn't mean that we will be able to find what we need."
Zedd continued to speak with the barkeep and then handed the barkeep a gold coin, most likely a bribe to get what he needed. Zedd then leaned in to the barkeep who whispered something into his ear. With that, Zedd left and returned to them with his hands full of drinks. "What did you learn?" Garnet asked.
As Zedd placed the drinks down, he sat down and cleared his throat. "There are rumors of an Odd-Eyed Tiger in the southwest," said Zedd.
New Quest: The Odd-Eyed Tiger
Defeat the Odd-Eyed Tiger and secure the area around it.
Reward: Experience
It seemed too easy, but Garnet appreciated an easy quest once in a while considering the last ones she got required her to build a city and she could not even do it herself. She had to entrust it to someone else and hope that they did a better job. She was lucky that she did not fail the quest either considering the only thing she had actually got done was rebuild the walls.
"I don't understand what's so special about an Odd-Eyed Tiger," said Quinton.
"An Odd-Eyed creature means it is capable of using two elements together," said Xiaomei. "It's a rare occurrence that happens through unnatural means. We might be able to find hints of a Holy Ground nearby, especially if the tiger acquired it from a nearby God."
"Wild animals can gain the abilities from a God as well?!?" Garnet said surprised.
"Yes," said Xiaomei. "If an animal comes into contact with a God, they can undergo the trials and earn the abilities as well if they are compatible. The result is a powerful and often intelligent creature."
"So should we go?" Garnet asked.
"I think we need more information first," said Riley.
"I agree too," said Zedd. "They also told me that many of these creatures have recently been found slain as well."
"That means someone must be hunting them too," said Garnet.
"Most likely," Zedd confirmed. "I want to get some information about them first if possible."
Zedd spent some more time asking around, but there was little information. There was even some conflicting information. There were stories of a black and gold robed group as well as a green and gold and a red and blue robed group hunting those creatures. That meant at least three different groups were hunting them.
"So there's at least three schools hunting them," said Xiaomei.
"Schools are hunting powerful creatures? What for?" Riley asked.
"To make Artifact Weapons," Xiaomei replied.
"It is a weapon that is imbued with the abilities of whatever creature it was created from," Zedd explained. "For example, if you slay a poisonous snake and used its bones in the creation of a sword, you can probably create a poisonous sword equal in strength to the snake itself."
It was another way of forging high quality weapons. Using the body parts of rare and powerful creatures was a common practice to create powerful items, even back in Antium and Anzio. The only problem was the lack of the high quality materials needed to create these items. However, if a wild creature obtained power from a Divine Creature and was then slain, it could make a powerful weapon. "I don't think it's wise to challenge them," said Riley.
"We have to," said Garnet. "Without it, we don't have a way to find a Holy Ground."
"The problem is that we don't have the numbers to compete with a school or a clan by ourselves," said Zedd. "No matter how strong any of us are, we're no match for hundreds or even thousands of trained individuals."
This story originates from Royal Road. Ensure the author gets the support they deserve by reading it there.
"And they might be preparing these weapons to strengthen their own groups for the Annual Tournament as well," said Xiaomei. "They won't hesitate to fight against others who are aiming for the same goal."
"We'll sneak around in small numbers like we always do," said Garnet confidently.
"I don't think we will be able to sneak around when we're trying to capture or kill a powerful creature," said Zedd. "You should know better."
The stronger a creature was, the larger the scale of the attack was going to be. Garnet knew from experience. The most powerful creatures had wide area attacks that could hit anything in sight. A forest of flames or the shaking of the ground was clearly going to be noticed by someone nearby. "Then is there nothing we can do?" Garnet asked.
"We can only challenge their hunting groups head on," said Xiaomei. "If we can weaken them or persuade them to retreat, then we can do it on our own."
"Isn't that the same as fighting then?" Garnet asked.
"Not quite," said Xiaomei. "If we reach the creature first, then we should have claim first. If they challenge us for a claim, then they are trying to steal from us. At that point, we no longer have to hold back if they're the ones challenging us."
"Isn't this just based on words between people?" Garnet asked.
"Would you spread news that your clan was defeated by a small group of unknown foreigners?" Xiaomei asked.
"I see," said Quinton. "We turn their own rules against them. They want to be recognized as strong, but they will not admit to defeat because they will lose face if they tell others that they failed."
"As long as we do not initiate a fight or try to steal from them, then we should be fine," said Riley.
"So shall we get moving?" Zedd asked. "If we learned about this from here, I think the others will know as well and try to hunt it as well."
"Alright, let's get going," said Garnet. "I don't want to miss this opportunity."
The group of five headed southwest towards the exit of town. Along the way, there were other groups of people in matching clothes, most likely from the same schools or clans as well. Garnet noticed one in green and gold heading towards them. Xiaomei immediately turned her head down and stood behind Quinton to hide herself.
The group in green and gold robes approached them from the front. Garnet recognized the clothes a little. It resembled the ones that Xiaomei was wearing during their first encounter. There was sixteen or seventeen of them and they were all fairly young. "I'm surprised they let foreigners into a clan," said the young man in front.

"Let me handle this," said Zedd as he walked forward.
"Can I help my fellow Junior with something?" Zedd asked.
"I heard you were asking around about the Odd Eyes to the southwest," said Rux. "I'm afraid that's ours."
"Oh? Did you already complete your hunt?" Zedd asked.
"Help me!" shouted a voice.
Garnet looked around, but could not see where it came from. It was coming from the direction of Rux.
"No, but we're not going to let anyone get in our way," said the young man next to Rux.
Name: Leo
Level: 51
Class: Spearmaster
Sub-Class: None
Stats: High Strength
"Over here!" the voice shouted again.
Garnet turned towards the direction of the voice. It was coming from Rux, but there was no one else that was talking.
"I do not wish to fight you, Junior," said Zedd.
"Well I wish to fight you and your clan, Senior," said Rux.
Zedd took his sword from his ring and raised it towards Zedd. "You dare threaten my students?!?" Zedd shouted as he released a powerful aura.
Garnet could feel the aura that Zedd was releasing was unlike anything she had ever felt before. It was much stronger than before. This was a result of Zedd's training. A few of the people behind Rux stepped back the moment they felt it.
Rux drew his sword. The blade of it was a light brown with some parts of it still nearly white in color. "Help me!" the sword screamed.
"Did anyone else hear that?" Garnet asked.
"Hear what?" Riley asked.
Garnet was the only one who could hear it coming from the sword. There was something special about it. "Take that sword from him," said Garnet. "Don't let him walk away with it."
"Thank you," said the sword.
"Alright," said Zedd. "Don't worry, I won't kill you."
"Don't act like you already won old man!" shouted Rux as he charged first.
Zedd held his sword with both hands and took a deep breath, watching Rux closely.
"Earth Saber!" Chunks of rocks wrapped around the sword as Rux raised his sword into the air. "Overhead Smash!"
BANG. Rux's sword lowered straight onto Zedd. Garnet knew that an attack of that caliber could not stop Zedd. After all, even if Zedd took the hit, he still had his Mana Armor to protect him.
Zedd's sword had made contact with Rux's sword. Zedd's sword had dug a little into Rux's sword, cutting into the dirt and reaching the blade inside. With a single swing, Zedd sent Rux flying backwards. The rocks that were wrapped around Rux's sword began to fall apart.
"So your weapon is superior to mine," said Rux. "Big deal."
"Did you think the sword is what made the difference?" Zedd asked as he stabbed his sword into the ground.
Rux picked himself off the ground. The people around him were stunned by this. Zedd stepped forward, closing the distance between them instantly and grabbed Rux by the neck. "I don't need a weapon to beat you," he said. "Put down your sword and surrender and I'll let you go."
"Ne-ver." Rux struggled to speak as Zedd choked him. Rux flailed his arms wildly, clawing away at Zedd.
Zedd turned to look at the others. "What school or clan are you with?"
"Xiao Clan," said Leo.
"Are you not going to help him?" Zedd asked.
"Master warned us that Rux was going to pick a fight he could not win one day and it would be best to leave him to his fate," said Leo.
"That's not good," said Zedd. "If your teammate was in trouble, wouldn't you help them?"
"I know I cannot win," said Leo. "Even if I attack you, chances are that we would both lose our lives."
"Good to know that you are wise enough to recognize that," said Zedd.
Rux lost consciousness as he dropped his sword. Zedd put him down on the ground and took the sword. "Per the terms, I will let you go," said Zedd. "But you must make sure to keep him in check."
"I will do better next time Senior," said Leo. "Thank you for your mercy."
Two of the other men picked up Rux and began to walk away. Zedd continued to look at them with the sword in hand until they were out of sight. "Are they gone now?" Xiaomei asked.
"Why did you hide behind me?" Quinton asked.
"They're from your clan aren't they?" Zedd asked. "That would explain your name."
"Yes," said Xiaomei. "I'm considered an Outlaw by them and they have orders to kill me."
"We'll protect you," said Garnet as she tried to comfort Xiaomei. "Don't worry about it."
"Thanks," said Xiaomei. "But I don't think our small group is enough. You haven't seen the things that they will do in order to become strong."
"By the way, why did you want this sword?" Zedd asked as he handed the sword to Garnet.
Garnet took the sword in her hand. "I heard a voice from it," she said. "It was crying out for help."
New Skill: Call: Kaimera
Call forth the Spirit, Kaimera
MP Cost: 5000
"Call: Kaimera!" A ball of light emerged from the sword and transformed into a small creature with three heads. One of a lion, one of a goat, and one of a dragon.
All three heads spoke at once. "Thank you," said Kaimera. There was a weird echo to its voice.
"What is that thing?!?" shouted Quinton.
"I am Kaimera, a Spirit," said Kaimera. "I was imprisoned inside that sword by the Xiao Clan."
"Why?" Riley asked.
"It's the most efficient way of channeling your power isn't it?" Zedd asked with a worried look on his face.
"Yes," said Kaimera. "There are many others like me trapped in those weapons. I was surprised that someone was able to hear my voice."
"So what do we do with this thing?" Garnet asked. "Should I just keep it as another spirit?"
"Help me free others like me," said Kaimera.
"That's not exactly why we're here though," said Garnet. "We came with a specific goal."
"She's right," said Zedd. "We have problems of our own to deal with."
"Why not?" Kaimera asked.
"I'm afraid we don't have the strength to challenge the other clans," said Zedd. "I'm sorry."
Zedd was right. Their weakness has always been their numbers. "I see," said Kaimera disappointedly. "But if they continue to hunt us, it is likely that the black star will awaken."
"What do you mean awaken?" Zedd asked. "How are the spirits and the black star connected?"
"Us spirits are chosen as successors should a Divine Creature fall," Kaimera explained. "If there are none of us, then when the Divine Creature dies, then the world will start to fall apart."
Garnet had heard about this from Ban before. "How is it possible that there are none of you to succeed a Divine Creature?" Garnet asked. "Aren't there a lot of you out there and hidden?"
"They were," said Kaimera. "But over the centuries, we have been hunted and there are not many of us left."
If the weapons were manufactured in large numbers, then it could be possible that there were not many spirits left. If the Guides had a way to detect the number of spirits left, it was likely that they would start sending in more creatures to attack since it would mean that there were no spirits left to become successors should a Divine Creature fall. "Is that why those creatures are appearing through the black star so often now?" Xiaomei asked.
"Yes," Kaimera confirmed. "But since we are being hunted now, we can no longer approach it to help humans fight anymore."
"I'm afraid we cannot help you until we get stronger," said Zedd. "Do you know of a Holy Ground or a Divine Creature that can help us?"
Kaimera thought about it. "If I help you, will you help me?" Kaimera asked.
"Yes," said Garnet.
Zedd agreed, "We'll help."
There really was no choice. They could not let the black star get out of control. After all, if the Eastern Empire was overrun, then the Guides would be able to establish a foothold from which they could attack other parts of the world. "I will bring you to the strongest Divine Creature I know, the Phoenix God," said Kaimera.
