Serena guided Garnet and Zedd down under the city. Tubes of lightning lined the corners, lighting up the whole underground tunnel. Zedd was on guard against Serena. "You know it's pointless right?" said Serena as she walked in front of them. "I could kill you at any time."
"Are you that much stronger than him?" Garnet asked.
"As a Guardian of this city, it is my job to protect it until the one meant to inherit it takes over," Serena explained. "That is you," said Serena as she pointed at Garnet.
"Why me?" asked Garnet. "I have no idea how to build or manage a city."
"Once you restore the other Guardians, it won't matter," said Serena. "We will be able to help, but you must acquire the power to do so first."
Serena stopped in front of a dead end. She placed her on the door. A flower with six petals appeared and the entire door opened. "A secret passage," said Zedd. "I never knew."
"This is the shortcut to get down to the Ark," said Serena. "The Ark is the back up copy of all the knowledge the city has acquired over the years. It is here that you will revive the core of the city."
"The city has a core?" Garnet was confused. The core of a city was usually a building like a city hall that officials gathered in to manage its affairs.
"It's a large crystal that acts as a mana generator to the city," Serena explained. "Over the years, it has decreased in power and the first thing you have to do is restore it. Only then can we start to rebuild the city."
There was a wooden double door in front of them. Serena opened them. In front of them was an enormous transparent crystal. Only the top half of it was visible through the ground.
Name: Mana Core
Quality: Mythical
Effects: It's supply is channeled throughout the conduits of the city in order to power the city's equipment and buildings.
Level 1: 0/10000 Mana
"I've never seen such a Mana Conduit so large," said Zedd.
"This is a special crystal," said Serena. "Only the Hero can use it and once she restores it, we can begin to rebuild the city."
"Go on," said Zedd.
Garnet walked up to the crystal. She put her hand against it. Strangely enough, on the floor underneath her was a Teleportation Summoning Circle, but a little different in design from the ones that she and Zedd used. A system message appeared:
Do you wish to upgrade the Mana Core?
Requirements: 10000 Mana
Yes/No
Garnet pressed yes. She felt the mana being drained from her body and it filled the crystal, turning it a light shade of blue.
Quest Complete: Rebuild Constantinople (I)
Power has been restored to the city.
Reward: Minion Development Upgrade
A system message appeared:
Minion Cap removed
Garnet looked at her Minion Development Menu and saw that there was no longer a maximum number that she could summon.
Quest Update: Rebuild Constantinople (II)
Restore the guardians of the city.
Reward: Automated Defense System
Garnet took another look at the Mana Core.
Do you wish to upgrade the Mana Core?
Requirements: 20000 Mana
Yes/No
She did not have the mana for the upgrade. It could be developed further, but it would take a lot. "It's done," said Garnet.
"Good, then I can bring you to the Vault," said Serena. "Follow me."
Serena guided Garnet to a pair of large metal doors behind the crystal. She put her hand on it and opened it. Inside, where numerous small drawers. "What is all this?" Garnet asked.
"Each one of these contains an artifact created by the city," said Serena. "All of the treasures created by the great spirits and past Heroes are preserved if possible."
Serena headed to the back and took out a single gold ring with a white crystal on it. She handed it to Garnet. Garnet took a look at the ring.
Name: Ring of Mana
Quality: Legendary
Effect: 0/100000. Can be used to store a percentage of excess mana and be consumed later.
"I see," said Garnet. "With this, I can store enough mana even for spells that I cannot cast."
"Yes, but you need to put the mana into it yourself by wearing it," Serena explained. "Once you've filled up the ring, we can begin to summon the other guardians."
"How many guardians are there?" Garnet asked as she put on the ring.
"Five including me, though there was a sixth in the works, she was not completed," said Serena.
"What do you mean by not completed?" asked Garnet. "How can a guardian be incomplete?"
"Each guardian is a man made life form," Serena explained. "Master Assad was in the process of creating a new guardian to bring our numbers up to six, but he disappeared before he could complete it."
"Master Assad as in the Hero Assad?!?" shouted Zedd.
"Yes," said Serena. "When Master Assad left this world, there were a few things that were incomplete. The first is the guardian. The second is the sword, but I do not know where he kept them."
"How can you not know?" Garnet asked.
"It's because they're rooms that only the Hero can access," said Serena. "As a guardian, I do not have the special trait to open it even if I found it."
"That means I have to discover it," said Garnet.
"But you have something more important to do first," said Serena. "Follow me."
Serena guided Garnet and Zedd back to the room with the crystal and headed through one of the doors on the side. As the doors opened, there was a metal table at the center of the room. "There's nothing in here," said Zedd. "Just this table."
"This is no ordinary table," Serena explained. "Hero, place your hands on the edge of the table and channel your mana into it."
Garnet placed her hands on the edge of the table and channeled mana into it. The surface of the metal table began to change. It took the shape of ruins, ruins she recognized as she had seen it just earlier as she flew above the city. "This is a map?" said Garnet.
"A map of the city and the surrounding region," said Serena. She then touched four spots and turned them red. "These are spots you need to get to."
"What is there?" Garnet asked.
"The Mana Sub-Crystals," said Serena. "They are responsible for powering the automated defenses of the city."
"Automated defenses?" Garnet was confused. She had the image of a cannon that fired spells without anyone actually using it.
"Remember the book I gave you?" asked Serena.
"The golem book?" said Garnet. "Did you mean that?"
"Yes," Serena replied. "There are golems in the city, but because the mana sub-crystals have been drained, you need to restore them in order for them to work again."
"What do I have to do?" asked Garnet.
"Just channel your mana into it," said Serena. "Once there's enough mana in it, it will activate on its own."
Suddenly, another system message appeared: Map Menu Unlocked. Sure enough as Garnet opened the Menu, there was a Map feature. At first, it was only included in her journey to the city and followed details along a specific route. But now, she could manipulate it. Zoom in, zoom out. Turn it on its side. She could even see where people were on the map. There were currently eight people wandering in the ruins of the city somewhere. It was unrivaled in terms of intelligence gathering. "I will never have to deal with incomplete information on the battlefield again," said Garnet.
"So, take care of those crystals okay?" said Serena.
"Alright," said Garnet as she headed back to the room with the Mana Core. She put the ring on her finger and activated the Teleportation Summoning Circle. The Menu that appeared was different from hers, showing twelve points in the city that she could warp to. She tapped the one closest to the sub-crystal and in a flash of blue light, she had teleported.
Meanwhile, Zedd stared at Serena. "I won't do anything to you unless you decide to steal something again," said Serena.
"I don't plan on it," said Zedd. "I'm more interested in your library. Do you think I can have a look?"
"Sure, but I'm keeping my eye on you," said Serena.
Garnet wanted to make sure she was not alone. "Recall!" The surviving Cerberus all appeared next to Garnet. "Call: Riley!" She also resummoned Riley to be safe.
"You're okay!" shouted Riley as she hugged Garnet.
"Yeah, I had some help," said Garnet.
"I know," Riley replied. "Looks like you're going to have your hands full."
"One thing at a time," said Garnet. "First thing I have to do is fix this place up."
As Garnet made her way to the location marked on the map, she realized how dire the situation was. Constantinople was the city that was built to resist the Invasions. Right now, it lied in ruins with no one having attempted to rebuild or repair the city. Instead, people were raiding it, trying to grab a hold of whatever technology or knowledge they could from the city in the hopes that they could use it for themselves. There was also knowledge that could be dangerous, such as technology to make weapons. It could single handedly turn the tide of a war, and it was likely that Constantinople had such things as well.
Garnet approached the marked location on the map. It was just a pile of rocks. "It's in here," said Garnet.
"Really?" asked Riley who began to dig around. "It just looks like junk."
Garnet walked up to the rubble and began to move the larger chunks of rocks out of the way. Her increased strength made it quite easy to even push the largest pieces. "Do you trust Serena?" Garnet asked.
"She's one of your summons now right?" said Riley. "There's no reason not to trust her."
"This just seems too convenient," said Garnet. "She showed up out of nowhere to save us."
"Didn't Zedd talk about her before?" said Riley. "I think it might be her job to protect this city and she's helping you because your goals align."
The two had found the ground, however, nothing was there. They kept pushing forward, looking for a crystal of some kind. "Do you think we can stop people from raiding the city?" Garnet asked.
"It's possible if you can establish it as your domain that you have power over," Riley answered. "I recommend a show of force."
"A show of force huh?" Garnet repeated. "That sounds easy, but is probably very hard considering what we had chasing us a short while ago."
"A city like this probably has defenses of some kind to help us," said Riley. "Remember that when we were defending Antium, we were all stronger?"
The status increases granted by the presence of royalty was truly great. If Constantinople had something like that, it would be very helpful as well. "I remember," said Garnet. "I hope this city has something like it."
"I think it does if you consider the stories we heard from Zedd," said Riley. "If a city like this can face off against a million strong army and still survive, I think there are some powerful secrets."
"Serena mentioned that," said Garnet. "It seems like only I can find them though."
The two saw a large crystal under the ground in front of them. Only the tip of the crystal reached close to the surface with some kind of circular magic circle design on the ground, perfectly preserved, connecting the two. "There it is!" Riley shouted. She began to push everything aside.
Garnet placed her hand on top of it and saw a system message.
Do you wish to activate the sub-crystal?
Yes/No
Garnet pressed yes. It drained away five thousand mana, but Garnet was quickly recovering it, so it was not an issue. CLICK. "Did you hear that?" asked Garnet.
"Yes," said Riley. "It sounded like something locked into place. Did you hear where it came from?"
CLICK. "There it is again," said Garnet.
Suddenly, there were hundreds of clicking noises all coming from under the rubble. CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK CLICK. EEK. There was the sound of a large piece of rubble falling over. A black and gold metal humanoid rose from the rubble. It looked like a tall and thin person, but it was clearly made entirely of metal.
Name: Automaton
Level: 1
Class: Guardian
Sub-Class: None
Stats: High Vitality
Another appeared, and another. Many of them rose from the rubble in front of them. At least a hundred in all. "Are these the ones responsible for the defense of the city?" Riley asked.
"I think it might be," said Garnet. "If there are three more of these, then there might be something equal to an army."
The automata looked at Garnet and Riley. Then, they started looking around. When the last automaton rose, they all began to scatter in different directions. "What are they doing?" Riley asked.
"I have no idea," said Garnet.
The automata started pushing the rubble aside and clearing the ground around it. "They're cleaning," said Riley. "I think they're responsible for maintaining the city."
"With four of these, we can immediately start to rebuild the city," said Riley.
"Let's hurry," said Garnet as she opened the map. "Flight!" She started heading to the next location.
Riley followed Garnet closely from behind as they made their way to the next destination. Even at their incredible speed, it was taking a few minutes. "Watch out!" shouted Riley.
Garnet immediately turned side ways and looked down. She spotted a man in a grey cloak. The chunk of earth passed right by Garnet.
Name: Leon
Level: 40
Class: Mage
Sub-Class: Druid
The sub-class was something Garnet had no knowledge about. Even though she had encountered Crossen, Crossen was still mostly a fire type that had access to a Succubus summon and some undead. "After him!" Garnet shouted.
Riley immediately gave chase while flying downwards. "Recall!" Riley recalled the surviving Cerberus and they appeared in mid-air. As they landed, they immediately gave chase.
Garnet followed Riley giving chase to the man. The Cerberus were fast, jumping over the rubble. The man disappeared into the ruins. With Garnet and Riley in the skies, it was impossible for him to fly away. "Who was that?" Riley asked.
"He was wearing a grey cloak," said Garnet. "Do you think he's with Anzio?"
"If he is, then we have to kill him," said Riley. "We can't let them know any more about the city."
Garnet and Riley circled from above, looking for anything trying to escape. The Cerberus on the ground were slowly sniffing around. Slowly, the group was narrowing their search range. As long as the man did not escape underground, they would be able to catch him. Then, surprisingly, his trail disappeared as the Cerberus starting spreading out again. "He's not here?" Garnet thought. "No, he has to be, he has a way to hide himself."
"Go look as well Riley," Garnet ordered. Riley had a talent for being able to recognize when someone was looking at her. She could lure out the person like this.
Riley began her descent and hovered just above the ruins. She slowly circled around when she felt something. "There!" she shouted as she pointed to a ruined building.
BAM. The man in the grey cloak knocked aside the rubble in the front of the building as he ran for it. "Stop him!" Garnet shouted.
The Cerberus all ran towards him. Garnet flew in low attempting to cut him off. "One touch is all I need," she thought.
The man in grey turned around. Garnet watched as the man's face began to turn red. Scales appeared on his face. He opened his mouth and Garnet saw an orange light.
Garnet immediately circled to the opposite side. The man spat fire out of his mouth. He did not have to speak the words to his spell. "Lightning Bolt!" Garnet fired a bolt of lightning at the man.
The man paushed for a second before shaking it off. Riley had finally caught up to the man because of that short pause. He turned around. His scales turned green. "Be careful!" Garnet shouted.
Riley grabbed the man's throat and shoved her hand into the man's chin, forcing his mouth closed. A small amount of green liquid seeped through the side of his mouth. As it dropped to the ground, there was a hissing sound as it burned the ground. "An acid," said Riley.
Garnet and the Cerberus caught up to the man. Riley still held his mouth shot. MMF. The man could not speak. Garnet grabbed a hold of the man with Riley. She titled him over. "Let go of it just a little," said Garnet.
The green liquid in the man's mouth fell to the ground, turning the ground black as it burned away at the ground. "Who are you?" Garnet asked.
The man did not speak. "Pleasure Inducement!" Garnet would have to use more persuasive means.
"UGH!" groaned the man.
"Who are you?" Garnet repeated.
The man turned to try to look at Garnet, but Riley kept his head turned straight. "Oh no you don't," said Riley. "You're only facing down until you answer."
The man did not speak. "Pleasure Inducement!" Garnet used it again. Even if he was resistant to it, repeated uses had cumulating effects because the body could not resist pleasure for long.
"One more time, who are you?" Garnet asked.
"Leon," said the man.
"Who do you work for?" Garnet asked.
The man kept his mouth closed. "Pleasure Inducement!"
"GAH!" The man groaned.
At this point, Garnet could tell that there was a wet spot on his crotch. Slowly, the man was beginning to weaken. "Who do you work for?" Garnet asked.
"A man in a grey cloak told me to collect information on this city," said Leon.
"Are you a part of the group of men in grey cloaks?" Garnet asked.
"No, it's my reward for agreeing to help them," said Leon. "It was made of good materials, so I took it."
The Grey Ghosts were most likely using other people like the Guild to collect information from Anzio. If they failed, then there would be no payout. They would not have to risk their own forces. Unfortunately, it meant that they could probably send a lot of people over to collect information. "What should we do with him?" Riley asked.
"We can't let him go," said Garnet.
"I agree," said Riley. "The less information Anzio has on us the better."
A case of theft: this story is not rightfully on Amazon; if you spot it, report the violation.
"Mu-" Leon attempted to cast a spell.
Before he could even finish saying the word, Riley slammed his mouth shut, preventing him from finishing the spell. "What do we do with him?" Riley asked Garnet.
"There's only one thing we can do," said Garnet as she drew her sword. "He's an enemy combatant who refuses to surrender. We're already at war with Anzio anyways."
"Are you sure about this?" Riley asked. "So far, you've mostly been protecting yourself, but this will drive you towards a path of war with Anzio."
Garnet hesitated for a moment, but she turned to Riley with confidence. "I'm sure," she said as she lowered the sword.
"MMF," Leon tried to scream ,but with Riley covering his mouth, it was muffled.
"Blood Absorption!" Garnet absorbed his body.

New Skill: -LOCKED-
Garnet was almost certain that she would get a skill from Leon considering the unique transformations he had and the ability to cast magic without having to call out the spell, but they were all locked. However, there was nothing, not even a locked skill. It was something strange. "Let's hurry up and activate the sub-crystal."
Garnet and Riley headed back towards their destination on foot. It was likely that there were other people who were around and may be after her. As the two approached the destination, there were no others in sight. "The fight might have scared them away," said Riley.
"I hope so," said Garnet as she began to push the rocks aside. "The less people there are, the less trouble it will be later."
Garnet placed her hand on the magic circle design.
Do you wish to activate the sub-crystal?
Yes/No
Garnet pressed yes. Again, she lost five thousand mana. A total of twenty thousand mana would need to be spent. The automata began to reassemble themselves once more. The black and gold metal were able to reconstitute themselves from what appeared to be complete destruction. It was likely that the only reason they even fell apart was because they were depleted of mana. As long as there was mana circulating from the main Mana Core, they could be invincible. "Two down, two to go," said Garnet.
"Let's be careful as we make our way to the other ones, we should try not to be spotted," said Riley.
"Let's just use the warp points," said Garnet. She opened up the Map and looked for the nearest warp point. "This way," she said as she walked forward.
Sure enough, there was another magic circle on the ground. "These things sure are convenient," said Riley.
"With a city this large, I think there might be more of them than we initially saw," Garnet added. "It could just be that they are inaccessible for one reason or other."
The two carefully made their way to the third sub-crystal. It was here that Garnet spotted something strange. "What is that thing?" she wondered.
Riley peeked over the side and saw it. There was a creature. Its head resembled a lion, but it had the head of a lion, but none of its fur. It's face was red. Its head had horns and its body was covered by some type of green plates that combined, formed something similar to plate armor.
Name: Nian
Level: ???
Class: Sacred Mountain Beast
Sub-Class: Divine
Stats: ???
Garnet recognized the words Divine. It was similar to Lotan. "Zedd," Garnet whispered quietly into the pin.
"What is it?" Zedd asked.
"I need your help, come quickly," said Garnet.
"Can I just warp to you now?" Zedd asked.
"Wait a moment," Garnet replied. Garnet and Riley ran back in the opposite direction. "Okay now."
Zedd used Teleportation on the pin to instantly warp to Garnet. "What's the problem?" Zedd asked.
"A level unknown creature," said Garnet as she guided Zedd back to the spot. As they approached the spot, Garnet leaned against the wall and pointed over her shoulder.
Zedd took a close look over. "It's a Nian," said Zedd. "That thing is dangerous."
"A Nian?" Garnet was confused. "What's a Nian?"
"It's a creature with thirteen transformative abilites," said Zedd. "Each one has thirteen different abilities."
"I need to get past it," said Garnet. "Do you know of a way?"
"No," said Zedd. "It is very aggressive and if it spots us, it will attack."
"Can we fight it?" Garnet asked. "You should be strong enough."
"That thing is on a completely different level," said Zedd. "It can use powerful magic and unlike other creatures, it can speak and understand human words."
"What does it want?" Garnet asked.
"The Nian is a creature that is meant to protect something," Zedd explained. "It is likely that it is protecting whatever is nearby and attacking it might provoke it."
Garnet remembered that Lotan was tasked with protecting various orbs around the world. If Nian was doing something similar, then it was not going to be leaving. "I have to try to talk to it," said Garnet.
"Wait!" Zedd said angrily. It was too late, Garnet had already stepped out.
GRR. The Nian growled at Garnet. "I just want to talk," said Garnet as she stopped walking.
"What do you want human?" Nian asked.
"I want to activate the mana sub-crystal nearby, that is all," said Garnet.
Nian's eyes changed and looked at Garnet. "You're just like the others, trying to steal the treasures of this city!" Nian shouted.
"I'm not," Garnet replied. "I already activated two of the other crystals. I just need this one and one more to go."
Nian looked up into the sky as if it was looking for a sign. "I can feel it, you're not lying," said Nian. "How do I know that you're not just trying to take control of the army?" it asked.
"I cannot prove it," Garnet replied.
"At least you're honest," said Nian.
"May I ask what you are doing here?" Garnet asked.
Nian lowered his guard and returned to a passive stance. It looked in Garnet's direction. "What about the other two hiding there?" it asked.
"Come out," said Garnet.
Zedd and Riley came out of hiding. Zedd was visibly frightened. "I see you know about me old man," said Nian.
"I do," said Zedd.
"I've been here since the city was abandoned," Nian explained.
"Why?" Garnet asked.
"The city's previous Master instructed me to protect this place," said Nian.
"Is the previous Master Assad?" Garnet asked.
"How do you know that name?" asked Nian.
"Assad was the Hero before me," said Garnet. "I am the current Hero."
"I need proof," said Nian.
Garnet removed the Ring of Mana from her finger. "Nothing here," she said. Then, Garnet opened the Inventory. From it, she removed her old clothes. "See?"
"That's the Inventory of the Hero!" said Nian. Nian began to channel its mana. "Very well, I'll believe you if you can complete this contract."
Marks on the ground began to appear as Nian etched markings all around. A complex magic circle composed of multiple layers appeared. "It's so different," said Garnet.
"It requires powerful magic to bind a powerful beast," said Nian.
Garnet placed her right hand on Nian's head. "Your left hand is required," said Nian.
Garnet took back her hand and switched to her left. Nian lowered its head, signaling submission and acceptance. No blood was required for a contract with this beast. Nian channeled its magic, lighting up the first layer. "Now you do it," said Nian.
Garnet channeled her own magic into the circle. The other layers lit up. The ground lit up with twelve animal symbols lightning up. The column of blue light descended. As it reached Garnet, it slowed down. The symbol on her left hand began to light up as one of the petals filled itself with the color of blue. A second petal, one of yellow lit up. "Nian is one of the guardians?" Garnet thought. The other petals remained empty.

New Skill: Guardian Contract

MP Cost: 5000
"Guardian Contract?" Garnet thought to herself. "I can make new guardians?" It was something she would have to learn more about later on. But there was something more important to do first.
"So what you say is true," said Nian. Nian stepped aside.. Behind it was the crystal. "Here it is," it said.
Garnet placed her hand on it.
Do you wish to activate the sub-crystal?
Yes/No
Garnet channeled her mana into it and activated it. "Three down, one to go."
The familiar sound of the automata reassembling themselves was strange, but it was also good. It was then that Garnet realized something. "Hey Nian, do you know of any secret rooms in the city?" she asked.
Serena had said there were at least two. "I do not," Nian replied. "Only the Hero can access those rooms. No one else."
"By the way, as a Divine creature, what do you manage?" Garnet asked.
"I manage an aspect of time," said Nian.
"Alright, thanks for the information," said Garnet. Garnet opened up the map and looked at the last spot. "Closest warp point is a bit to the south," she said.
The five of them used the warp point and approached the final sub-crystal. "Please no more surprises," said Riley as she crossed her fingers.
"Riley is acting a little different," Garnet thought to herself. It was almost as if she had started to regain some of her personality. But, Garnet had to focus on one task at a time. With the city fixed, she could then create a body for Riley. "We already had two surprises," said Garnet. "I think not having something there would already be a surprise."
As the group approached the final sub-crystal, Garnet started to be cautious. That was when something else surprised Garnet. Nian suddenly ran in, spotting a group near the crystal. ROAR. It released a terrifying roar that rang throughout the area. It was so strong that almost everyone in the region of the city could have heard it. "There!" said Riley as she pointed to a group.
There were three people, one man who was heavily armored, one woman in leather and cloth, and one woman who was dressed in a mage's robe. Garnet could tell the three was terrified, but they were intent on continuing. Nian stared them down. "Stop!" Garnet shouted as she jumped inbetween them. "Leave now!" she shouted.
"So you can take the valuables of this city? Never!" shouted the man in heavy armor as he dashed foward towards Garnet.

Before Kuro could get more than a step foward, Nian intervened. BANG. Nian crashed head first into Kuro, knocking him over. Lune cracked a crystal in her hand. "Crystal Guardian: Amber Lion!"
A large orange portal appeared and a golden lion fell from it. It was a form of summoning that utilized crystals instead of magic circles for summoning. It was much faster, but it was probably costly for all the crystals that had to be used as catalysts for this type of magic.
Garnet ran to help. After all, it was a three on one. "Stand back!" Nian shouted.
"It can talk?!?" Kuro was surprised by it.
Nian took advantage of this chance, splitting himself into two identical copies. They charged the lion, shattering it with a single tackle. "Retreat!" shouted Marta.
"Crystal Guardian: Sapphire Anaconda!" Lune cracked another crystal. A purple portal appeared and a large purple snake fell from it.
Nian pushed foward, easily tearing the large snake in two. Like Serena, Nian had many special powers, and that made it extremely powerful. Garnet only had to watch as it easily pushed away three people. Once they left, Nian looked around once more. "It's clear," it said.
"Thank you," said Garnet as she walked towards the last sub-crystal. Placing her hand on it, she activated it.
