Chapter 26: Attack of the Maddened Swird

Slimantha blinked. She stood in front of Samuel, Mimi, and Black. Slimantha’s brown eyes were still on the swird. Its black sword eyes were locked with her eyes. It stretched out its wings, various silvery sword blades jutting out from between its black feathers. She calmly watched as the silvery blades retracted. The swird pulled its wings back in. Its eyes, its angry eyes, were still on her.

Samuel stepped in front of her. His hand went to the hilt of his sheathed sword. His blue eyes were on the monstrous crow, were on the swird. “Stand back,” he said, addressing the three women behind him. His eyes were still on the swird. He drew his sword, the gray metal of his sword’s blade glinting as it came free from its sheath.

The swird glanced to Samuel’s weapon, glanced to the metal of the hero’s blade. Then its black sword eyes went to his face, its angry gaze boring into him. It spread its wings and unleashed a mighty caw before taking flight. It flew right to the hero. Sparks flew as talons met sword.

Slimantha backed up, her black shoes lightly tapping against the silvery steel of the floor. Mimi and Black, Mimi at her left and Black at her right, backed up alongside her. Slimantha blinked. Her brown eyes followed the unfolding fight. More sparks flew as bladed wing met sword this time.

Black glanced at Slimantha. “You afraid?” the cat woman said. Black’s tail gave a cute twitch.

“Nope,” Slimantha said. She glanced at Black. The eyes of the two women met momentarily, and the two of them smiled at one another.

“Glad you two are enjoying this,” Mimi said, a sarcastic edge to her voice. Her golden eyes shifted from the fight to Slimantha and Black. “You girls think he has this?” Her eyes went back to the fight. Yet more sparks flew as talons and sword met again. “That swird seems pretty tough.”

“Pretty tough?” Slimantha blinked and then looked at Mimi. Her beautiful brown eyes met the golden eyes of the golden woman. “You sure?” Her gaze went back to the on-going fight between hero and swird. “I mean it doesn’t look that tough, does it?” She crossed her arms.

The swird cawed and swiped a bladed wing, its right wing. Wing met sword, and wing won. A shower of sparks rained down, and the swird’s wing severed Samuel’s sword. The upper portion of the hero’s now-ruined blade clattered to the steel floor. The swird leapt back and pulled its wings in. It glared at its foe, glared at Samuel, and then cawed.

Slimantha lowered her arms, a drop of sweat running down her right cheek. She blinked. “Well, I still don’t think it looks that tough,” she said. Her brown eyes were on the swird. Then she shifted her gaze to Samuel, who held his now-broken sword at the ready. “I so don’t think he has this though.” She looked at Black. The eyes of the two women met. “You think I should step in?”

Black smiled. “No, head for the exit,” she said. “We will run.” She then glanced at Mimi and smiled again. “I will distract this thing to buy some time, so just head for the exit.” Her lovely brown eyes then went to Samuel. “If you’ll excuse me, I have a hero to save.” She then dashed over to the hero in question, dashed over to Samuel.

Samuel glanced to Black and gritted his teeth. “Please stay back,” he said. “This thing is dangerous.”

“Maybe you are the one who should be staying back,” Black deadpanned, gesturing to Samuel’s still-broken weapon. “You literally have half a sword right now.”

Samuel held his ruined weapon up, his blue eyes on it. “I see your point.” He hung his head down and sighed.

“I will distract this thing.” Black’s feline tail swished behind her. Her brown eyes were on the swird. “You run, OK?”

“I can’t just leave you to fight this thing on your own.” Samuel’s blue eyes went to the swird. “It is too dangerous.” He readied his broken sword.

Black glanced at Samuel and flashed him a smile. “Don’t worry. I got this. Just run. I will be joining you shortly.” She got a little nod from him before he turned away. He headed for the exit. Black then looked at the swird and smiled. Inky black tendrils began dancing about her fingers.

Slimantha and Mimi peered into the room through the doorway. The two women now stood in the hallway, awaiting the arrival of the others. “Hero incoming,” Mimi said, referring to the nearing Samuel. A slight giggle slipped through Slimantha’s lips, and then a certain hero, Samuel, came running through the doorway. Mimi’s golden eyes went to Samuel’s obviously broken weapon.

Samuel blinked and then followed Mimi’s gaze to his ruined sword. Slowly, a drop of sweat rolled down his right cheek. Awkwardly, he tossed away the broken sword, tossed it to the side. He then looked at Mimi’s face, and the curvy mimic smiled at him. He smiled back at her.

“That is much better,” Mimi said, her golden eyes still on Samuel’s face. A sudden crash drew her attention back to the room. Inside, a certain swird climbed back to its feet. Beside it, a certain witch calmly stood. Black was certainly holding her own.

“Go, Black!” Slimantha said, crowding beside Mimi to better see into the room. The tan-skinned slime summoner leaned forward, a smile on her face. Black’s tail twitched, and the cream-skinned cat woman glanced at Slimantha. Their eyes met, and the two women smiled at one another.

The swird cawed and then swung its right wing at Black. Black dodged and then countered with a right-handed punch. The magic-infused punch knocked the swird to the steel floor. Black smirked as she lowered her arm. Little tendrils of black dissipated from her right hand. Before the swird could return to its feet, she made a break for it, heading for the doorway the others were waiting at. Her black shoes pounded the silvery steel of the floor as she pumped her legs. Behind her, her black cat tail swayed rapidly. She reached up and held her black witch hat in place, steadying it. An enraged caw sounded from behind her as she reached the others.

As soon as Black had passed through the doorway, Mimi slammed the door shut. Slimantha glanced at Black, who panted softly, and then at Mimi. Her brown eyes met Mimi’s golden eyes. “You think that will work?” Slimantha said.

“Well,” Mimi shrugged, “it helped with the smaller crows.” Her golden eyes went to the steel door. A smug smile formed upon her face. “Better than fleeing down the hall with that thing in hot pursuit, isn’t it?” She crossed her arms, somehow looking even more smug now. Then she jolted as a loud bang rocked the door. The hinges groaned as the door came close to coming free from them. Mimi lowered her arms as a drop of sweat worked its way down her right cheek.

Slimantha’s beautiful brown eyes went from Mimi to the rapidly failing steel door. “I vote we flee down the hall,” she said. Her eyes then went to the others. “Any takers?” She got a series of nods. It was unanimous. They would flee down the hall.
