Chapter 17: Sharing a Sandwich in the Filtered Moonlight

Slimantha yawned, her brown eyes fluttering open. She had awakened. It was still night. The interior of the tent was dark but not perfectly so. She turned onto her left side. Her eyes fell upon the slumbering form of Rose. Slimantha blinked and then sat up. She glanced about the tent. Her eyes then returned to Rose. Someone, Samuel, was distinctly missing. For a time, Slimantha watched Rose peacefully sleep. Then she turned her attention to the tent’s exit. She gave another yawn and then crawled out.

She climbed to her feet, now outside the yellow tent. She glanced back at the tent and then stretched. She bent over, hinging at her hips. Her fingers touched down gently upon the gray brick floor. Rays of moonlight shone down from above, casting an ethereal beauty throughout the ruins. It was darker than during the day, but plenty of moonlight was present. She straightened back up.

Her brown eyes came upon Samuel, who stood facing away from her. She took a step toward him. Samuel the Hero From Another World stared at something, something on the floor in front of him. She took another step toward him, her eyes going to what had his attention. In front of Samuel, spider lilies poked up from between the gray bricks of the floor. They were not red spider lilies though. They were white instead. She stared at the white spider lilies for a moment and then blinked. Her brown eyes went back to Samuel. She smiled and then stepped up beside him. A ray of moonlight fell over her. Her eyes went back to the flowers.

Samuel jolted as he noticed Slimantha the Slime Summoner’s presence. He stepped to the side, the sharp tap of his black shoes on gray brick sounding out. He relaxed when his blue eyes fell upon Slimantha. He glanced down and let out a breath. His blue eyes went back to the beautiful tan-skinned woman now illuminated by a ray of moonlight. A soft rosy tint came to his cheeks, and he turned back to the patch of white spider lilies. “You couldn’t sleep either?” he said.

Slimantha blinked, and then her brown eyes went to him. She smiled. “I woke up and noticed you were missing,” she said. “I thought I’d look for you.” She looked back to the flowers. “You like these flowers?” She crouched down to get closer to the white spider lilies. She prodded one with her right pointer finger. Its petals wobbled.

“I guess I do.” Samuel crouched down beside Slimantha. He watched as she prodded another flower. His blue eyes went to her face, and her brown eyes met his eyes. Then his stomach rumbled. His face flushed, and he looked away.

Slimantha giggled, bringing her right hand to her lips. She glanced down to Samuel’s stomach. “Sounds like someone is hungry,” she said. She giggled again, and then her brown eyes went back to Samuel’s face. “I can help with that.” She sat down upon her heels. “Come have a seat with me.”

Samuel looked at Slimantha. “I-If you say so,” he said. He sat down upon his own heels, facing her. His knees and her knees almost touched.

Slimantha smiled at Samuel and reached into her left pocket. She pulled out a partially eaten cheese sandwich. She held the sandwich up. “We can finish the rest of this sandwich.” She smiled again and then brought the sandwich to her lips. She took a bite and then held the sandwich out to Samuel.

Samuel watched Slimantha chew the bite of sandwich. His eyes then went to the sandwich being offered to him. His stomach rumbled again. He took the sandwich and then took a bite of it. He chewed as he handed it back.

“It’s good, right?” Slimantha said. She smiled at Samuel and then took another bite. The cheesy goodness flooded her mouth as she chewed. She swallowed.

“It is,” Samuel said. He accepted the sandwich again and then brought it to his lips. He bit into it and then handed it back to Slimantha. The sandwich passed back and forth between the two of them, both taking bites in turn.

Finally, the last bite of sandwich made its way to Slimantha. She smiled and then stuffed the last bite into her mouth. She chewed and then swallowed. Her brown eyes went to Samuel. “I’m all out of sandwich. Still hungry, or you good?”

Samuel’s blue eyes met Slimantha’s brown eyes, and he smiled at her. “I’m good,” he said. “That sandwich of yours was pretty good.” He leaned a little closer to her. “It was nice sharing it with you.”

Slimantha smiled back at him and then glanced at the patch of white spider lilies. “These flowers are rather pretty.”

“They are.” Samuel glanced at the white spider lilies too. “They look really nice,” he looked at Slimantha again, “but you know what is prettier?” He leaned closer to Slimantha, his blue eyes meeting her brown eyes.

“What is?” Slimantha said. Her brown eyes were still locked with Samuel’s blue eyes.

Samuel smiled at Slimantha. “The one who is prettier than those flowers,” he leaned even closer to her, “is you.” He pulled back.

“Me?” Slimantha blinked. Her brown eyes returned to Samuel, and she smiled a big smile. “Thanks for the compliment.” She shifted her weight from side to side. Then she looked to the yellow tent. Her eyes went back to Samuel. “You should totes tell Rose a compliment like that.”

“O-Of course I should,” Samuel said, hanging his head a bit. He looked back up at Slimantha, who still sat in front of him. Then he climbed to his feet.

Slimantha returned to her feet too. She stretched her arms and then yawned. Her beautiful brown eyes went back to Samuel, and she smiled at him. “You ready to head back into the tent?”

Samuel’s blue eyes went to the yellow tent and then back to the beautiful woman standing next to him. “I suppose we should be heading back into the tent,” he said. He smiled at Slimantha. “Let’s go.”

Slimantha grabbed Samuel’s left hand with her right hand. A soft blush came to Samuel’s face at the touch of Slimantha’s soft tan skin. Slimantha then began leading Samuel back toward the tent.
