Micky woke up the next day, did his morning ablutions and made for the adventurer’s guild. He has already gotten into a rhythm for his adventuring days and he wasn’t going to knock what works… so far.
He didn’t remember much of what happened last night. Something about a troll propositioning him, then Meril fighting for his honor. Then they fought over who he belonged to. But in the middle of it Prin grabbed Micky and ducted out. Luckily it had seemed that the troll and Meril were to busy to notice at the time. Luckier Meril and the troll were just about equal in STR. Unfortunately, Meril is as STR as a troll…
Micky went to the adventurer’s guild and was still glad not to find that other clerk. He had asked and apparently the manager had given him paid leave for ‘Trama’ and he wasn’t expected back for a few days. The chick at the counter also told him not to worry about it because the guy literally wouldn’t remember. Usually he was so stoned that he wouldn’t even remember to take the next customer and the rest of the guild considered him more of a mascot than an actual staff member.
Micky asked why they hadn’t just fired him. Or something else entirely, he imagined that pissing off a powerful adventurer would likely not end well, and escalate quickly. The clerk had told him that it usually didn’t come to that. Anyone that he would meet at these lines wouldn’t be that strong, they all had their own special lines for those. And the manager would usually step in before things escalated too far if he actually got a customer. But the manager had been off overlooking a new employee at the time.
Otherwise, they just let him get high on [Stone]s and be done with it. Micky again asked why this loser wasn’t fired, he would assume paying somebody like that was wasting money. The clerk shushed him and looked around. Nobody was bothered by it and they all knew it, but they were also too scared to say it. “He’s the branch manager’s son, what else. So don’t let the management hear that ok? Adventurers that say things like that around management get sent off on one way missions, bosses orders. None of us clerks care. As for why they aren’t firing him and just paying the bastard on the DL? It’s cuz he is the bosses son he had with his lover and he wants him to learn to be ‘responsible’. The boss would fire him in a heartbeat. He thinks he’s a deadbeat just as much as the rest of em’. But if he wants to get snu-snu he needs to keep that boy employed.”
Micky nodded. He didn’t understand the problem, but he nodded just the same. He picked up another two kill quests, this time slimes and horned rabbits. He needed to see how Squishy would react to killing other slimes. He also picked up another gathering quest in the area as well.
Now Micky just had to wake up Princess. But this time he came prepared. He poked at her and prodded her until she grappled the offending limb into submission. But it wasn’t Micky’s limb! It was the limb of a stuffed bear. “I’m keeping the bear.” Said Prin.
“Fine, but I’m not buying you a knew one when I have to wake you up again. Now come on get dressed so we can get to work.” Prin groaned but did so. Micky quickly escaped the room before she got undressed.
They met downstairs where breakfast was waiting. Micky had already predicted how this was going to go. He was overjoyed that it had been exactly as he had predicted. Prin still had the bear though. He would need a plan to get it back so that he could get it back to reset for next time.
After eating, and Micky ‘stealthily’ got the bear back and reset, they headed off for the low ranking woods again. The guards there waved them on through, remembering that they had saved a group of fellow adventurers from goblins. They appreciated what they did, not every adventurer was as forthright as them.
The travel through the woods wasn’t all that onerous. If anything the only problem was that they had found themselves attacked by small packs of wolves and goblins as the two rebuilt themselves in the area. Of course they were no match for an adult or a young adult. So the pair of Micky and Prin easily took care of them. The only real problem then is that they hadn’t found their prey so easily.
Soon the roving packs of goblins and wolves would settle back down, then they would start building up. Then they would send out skirmishes and even full blown wars against each other until there was a dominant pack in the territory. Of course amongst all that they would be fighting each other, but the major fighting would be amongst others of their own kind until the two had a ‘Chief’. Only then would they truly start to set themselves against the other monsters of the forest.
This was the stage that the monsters were at when Micky and Prin had been sent out for the kill quests. This has been the stage they were at for the last several kill quests. Because the clans were using them as farms for XP. This was why they were able to take down a team, even as wounded as they were. Because the clans purposely teach their aspirants how to maximize XP and stable farming practices. Not how to actually complete the mission.
It took them most of the day just to locate the horned rabbits. Of course by then they had collected twice over what they needed in herbs. Micky was suspecting that gathering quests were less about filling the quota and more about introducing the various alchemist and shop tellers to purchase the herbs that you have found. After all, what are you going to do with a rare but dangerous to process herb you don’t need? Simple, sell it. Of course he much rather deal with the alchemist that lives here. She gave better than average prices and still came out on top.
So that is what they did. Just earning the quota and selling the rest to the alchemist. It was funny because when they brought the herbs to the seller they had accused them of keeping some to themselves. Then they accused of selling to somebody else. Of course they actually did that last one, but when he asked around he found nobody had bought from them. So while he had blacklisted Micky’s crew he wasn’t able to give them a black mark, no matter how much he hollered.
Of course, right now they had to deal with finding these elusive wabbits. It was hunting season and hasenpfeffer was on the menu. They finally found them frolicking in a glade. Micky and Prin realised that it wasn’t actually hard to find them. What was hard was sneaking up on them so they didn’t escape. Unlike most base level monsters horned rabbits knew they were a low leveled monster and would run away. So Micky 'Loudmouth' and Prin 'Stomping Foot' were not the greatest at approaching them.
You would think that Prin would be a lot more stealthy being a former bandit. But she mostly had to sit still and wait. Also she never actually joined in the banditing. Worse, hunting was a lot easier when the prey came to you. So while horned rabbit was one of the few monsters that can be cleaned up properly and was a very good dish, she has never actually had any. But now that they found some, and knew what was wrong finishing the quest was easy enough. Squishy had to stay back because in a head on clash, soft slime flesh vs horns, the horn won.
So Micky just [Accelerat]ed Prin and she launched a ranged attack, heading off her prey. She then charged in now that the prey was spooked and the fight was on. Now that they were cornered the horned rabbits charged in suicidally. Taking out the males wasn’t going to do much though. What they needed to attack was the queen. She was lazily trying to escape. Having met with hundreds of these quests this year alone she was in no hurry. Only the males where in danger, if Micky and Prin had been clanners.
Both Micky and Prin poked things until they [Dead] including the Queen. When she [Dead] her eyes seemed to say “Why me? They’re the ones you want!” But Micky and Prin never answered.
After finishing up with the rabbits they quickly finished up with the slimes. Micky needn’t have worried. She had been fine in the dungeons but she was just as fine with wild, natural slimes. He had worried that she might have taken their side since these were similar to her family unlike dungeon slimes. But when they attacked Squishy had gone into a righteous, indignant rage. How dare these upstarts attack her charge?
Finishing up and taking their gains back they headed to their temporary home.
