Intermissions Period - 5: Diaries of an investigator (4)

20th day of the 356th Varfyr Month

Absurd! The earth wall formed around the dwarven palace seemed to be nearly impenetrable! When I arrived at the palace a few days later (I was delayed because of the fighting), there were several construction sites trying to break through the walls. The dwarves had been trying to get into the palace for a few weeks, or months, with no luck. They barely scratched the surface of the earthen wall. Both sides blamed and accused each other of treason, while some neutral factions insisted that this was the doing of the demons.

It took me a long time to study the spell, but I managed to find the core, the thing holding the whole spell together. Such spells always needed a conduit to loop the spell, as if someone was still casting the spell over and over again. Sometimes it could be a piece of Sayitsin magic crystal or an Angolian scroll.

However, this spell had transcended the need for a physical conduit. The core of this spell was not physical, but an abstract concept - a fragment of memory. To break a constant spell, I needed to destroy the core, but how does one destroy a memory?

Whenever I ‘interacted’ with the fragment, I would get blurry visions of someone’s life. I didn’t know whose. Perhaps it belonged to the person I was tracking? It was useless trying to decipher the memory as it was just someone staring at a wall.

Why would anyone do that?

In order to use these spells, one had to sacrifice memories. They had to sacrifice what they know, what they felt, what they heard at a specific time. To stare at a wall for a long period of time would mean that important memories didn’t have to be sacrificed. In order to prolong and to store as much ‘ammunition’ as possible, one had to remember every single dull, miniscule detail in every event possible. Just walking across the room, this person probably had to remember how to breathe at the first step, how he contracted his muscles, what he smelt on the way, and so on.

If I had to do that for every single second of my life, I would go insane. What sort of mad, delusional person would do this just to achieve the mastery of arcane arts? Why?

What is the point?

The answer: there is no point.

29th day of the 356th Varfyr Month

After breaking through the memory, I managed to create a hole in the earth wall. Almost immediately, I was assailed by a storm of essence of death. Its putrid stench was everywhere. Was the person I was looking for inside here?

Yomi, if you find this diary, look for my will at the last page of this book.

29th day of the 356th Varfyr Month

The palace was filled with short, petite, pale dwarven girls all clad in armor. I could vaguely sense their true nature, but could I really be sure of it?

I was ushered in and was welcomed as a hero into the palace to meet Queen Ellysa VI herself. Every step closer intensified the scent of the undead. What could the mighty dwarven queen be?

My head is starting to hurt and I have no cure to it.
