Dive 76: Summoning and Dungeon Upgrades

Short summary of the last chapter:

Spoiler :

Voice spent a while upgrading his fairies. He gained a trait which helped, and hurt him at the same time. His metal and earth fairies now had the ability to coat his weapons and armor. Eli can now even regenerate when it is being destroyed. He is on his way to upgrading Moro.

Also, let me know if anything is wrong with the chapter! Be sure to comment and rate!

Sorry about the wait. I usually start typing on Monday or Tuesday night, but I had work this week since school was out.

It turns out the entire ordeal happened in only an hour. The time compression was intense. My head began to throb so I took a well earned break.

After resting for another day, I decided it was time to summon Moro. I’m not going to bore you with the details of setting up the summoning circle.

What was interesting was what happened when I put enough mana in to actually fulfill the maximum mana requirements.

I found myself in a place surrounded by various animals. There were wolves, rabbits, horses, cows, and all sorts of other animals. There were those with two legs, four legs, not legs, six or eight legs. Scales, fur, exoskeletons.  The main thing I noticed was the express lack of anything with gills or wings.

The place itself had all sorts of plants. It seemed as if the vast amounts of plants here could indefinitely sustain the lives of the animals here. A rustling sound behind me.

I turned to look. There was nothing there. I mean literally nothing. Not even white space.  I knew I should have at least saw empty space, but not even that was there.

My mana sense picked up some extreme mana fluctuations from that direction though.  I heard another sound. This time, instead of a rustle, it was a voice.

The voice sounded serene.  There wasn’t even a speck of hostility. It sounded innocent. It seemed as if a young maiden were speaking. But the maiden was accompanied by a medley of hundreds of animal sounds and rustling plants.

“Voice. Your task here is likely different than any other god or goddess will have you do. It was specifically designed by Gaia for you. Here you must choose one of Gaia’s creations. If you can successfully understand that creature, I will grant Moro that transformation. Obviously you will have a chance to study them before I test your understanding.”

Hmm, so I get to pick the bonus Moro gets?

I looked over all of the creatures with an appraising eye. If this was anything like upgrading the other fairies I wouldn’t personally gain anything. The ability Moro would get would be pretty decent though.

Going off of the idea that this ability would be only held by Moro, I checked out the specs of each species. I decided to play around a bit. I looked over the insect section. If Moro was tiny than at least it would be harder to for the nature fairy to get hit.

“So you like the insect species, eh? There are multitudes of insects in Solun. You have a lot to look through.”

I quickly logged out and did some research on insect species. When I found what seemed good enough I couldn’t help but smile.

I logged back into DIVE, and picked my choice.

I narrowed it down to only moths. After a second I was able to find the one I wanted. Sure it was odd that they had almost identical species to the real world, but that was ok. I still managed to get something out of it.

“I choose the Calyptra moth!”

The voice seemed to be a bit taken aback, but quickly accepted. “That’s fine. It’s not very powerful, but it does have a unique way of keeping itself alive.”

Well duh. That’s why I chose it.

I figured that the moth might get a special ability as well due to its eating habits. I decided to take the risk of it being useless. There wasn’t a guarantee that Moro would get anything out of this process after all.

Suddenly the world felt much bigger. Despite this my body felt big and clunky. I felt myself falling. I instinctively knew to flap my wings.

I did. Wait wings?

I tried looking at my body, but couldn’t see anything. I heard the maiden’s voice again, even as I began flapping my ‘wings’ to stabilize myself.

“Voice, I have created a new body for you to inhabit. The Calyptra moth’s instincts are intact, so you will be able to gather a basic understanding quickly. For you to completely understand will take a while. You must also understand. Even should your return to your world, your moth body will remain alive. IF you are killed while you are gone it will be ‘game over’ for you.”

With that, the voice was gone.

This is what she meant by study!?

While I was upset about being transformed without my consent, it truly was the best way to study something foreign. Merely observing could only get me so much information.

I felt hungry. So hungry!

Nearby was a small brown horse, gently eating the grass around it. It couldn’t have been much older than a year or so. It seemed obvious to the evils of the world.

I knew what to do, but shuddered at the thought. Knowing that restraint wouldn’t bring any closer to understanding the insect I chose, I did what I had to do.

I flew down, and landed on the horse. After a moment of indecision, I extended my long tongue. The flesh felt lifeless under my feet. As soon as my tongue reached the skin, I shuddered but continued. I slowly rocked my head back and forth. This continued for about three seconds.

As soon as I was done I was rewarded with my food. Basically, these moths were similar to mosquitoes. They would suck blood from mammals. Unlike mosquitoes only the male moths would suck blood.

The blood gushed into my mouth through my tongue. The nourishment made it feel like I was drinking from the ichor of life. The sweet syrup given by the horse was worthy of praise.

After sating my hunger, and carefully hiding myself, I logged out. Technically speaking I was (probably) supposed to live in the body of the moth for a while before my understanding was acceptable. Instead I had another plan. Even if time in the summoning realms was sped up, I wanted to waste as little time as possible.

I spent only an hour looking up information on the moth. From birth to death I could quite possibly answer any question regarding the thing. I went in-depth too. Even going so far as to read theories as to why each of the things happened.

When I got back into the moth body, I felt like my understanding of the insect was at a fairly high level. Still, the voice didn’t allow me to leave.

I spent days in that test. I slowly grew bigger and bigger. I realized, thanks to my outside sources, that I could actually drink from fruits as well. Blood tasted better though.

As I grew older a female wanted to mate. I was all but an expert in pheromones, so I could tell what was happening. The mating ritual was … odd to say the least.

It was like my body lost all control. I entered into a trance-like state, and seemed as if I was watching from afar. We attached to each other, and i fertilized the eggs. When the mating ended I found my self grow old quickly.

The future life of the moth quickly passed through my mind, as if I was watching a documentary on fast forward. When the moth died, I found myself back at the eggs the female moth had laid. I hatched from an egg, and grew into an adult over a few days.

Then whole experience was rather bizarre. It wasn’t difficult, just odd. It was like being forced to watch/live another life. By the end I didn’t know if I was moth or man.

Of course that passed quickly. The voice returned, this time with a slightly distinct body. It was as if the body of the small person was wearing a cloak that bent light around her. Not very well though.

She sounded approving. “You’ve passed. I can tell you fully understand the ways of the Calyptra moth. From birth to death, you have experienced it all. Your understanding is the highest of any that have taken this test before.”

The figure nodded, and I felt myself drawn back into Solun.

Moro has benefited from the piety of the summoner. Moro has gained 19 luck.

While in monkey form, Moro will now grant the user bonus affinity to Nature Mana.

Moro has increased abilities. Moro can now transform into a Calyptra Moth. In this state Moro, and the user, will be able to use their straw-like tongues to absorb blood from enemies. When enough blood is absorbed, based on the size of the one sucking blood, additional bonuses will be granted temporarily.

Due to the special conditions of your body, this ability has mutated. You will be able to directly consume mana, as well as blood, from the host target.

If fairies die while in combat they return to the Ether Realm, and must be summoned.

I didn’t actually believe that Moro would gain such a great ability, but I was happy it happened. Not to mention I gained it too! Although the monkey bonus was worthless, the blood sucking thing was awesome! I just had to find something big enough to suck blood from.

My mind flashed to the bloods of the eight divines I had. I had totally forgotten about them. Since Ancestor seemed to stuck on using them for something, and I had gotten things out of the agreement, I would have to fix the situation before using them. Else Ancestor might not be as willing to help me out in the future.

Though the lure of using them was great, so to must be the reward that I would reap by completing whatever the Ancient Elves were working on.

The next upgrade was similar. I chose an animal, then lived its life while skipping unimportant phases. For some reason I started in adulthood again, and watched myself die before being reborn from my own offspring. I had to wonder if EDITOR was trying to say something about humanity.

The second animal I chose was a chameleon. If we are talking about getting the powers of animals, then wouldn’t that be the best one? Living as a chameleon was interesting. When I noticed a predator, I would have to send a signal to my body.

Chameleons contain little sacks of pigments inside of their cells. The close to the core of their bodies, the darker the colors are. They can activate that pigments to change their colors at will.

With my time spent studying the chameleon via the internet, I was able to understand most of it. The life cycle didn’t have too much trouble in it, although I was attacked almost every time I had control over the body.

I was even forced to change color to absorb or disperse sunlight. It was fun actually.

This time, when the voice spoke to me, I could see the blurry figure. It seemed like every success would bring me closer to viewing the figure completely. I could see the body, but I couldn’t seem to concentrate on it very well.

Without even waiting I began the final step. The final summoning circle was huge. It easily had a diameter of five yards. The complexity of the structure actually took several hours to complete.

Moro was in the form of the monkey. Moro was much cuter like that, although the idea of a pet chameleon was pretty good too.

After pumping in the required mana, most of my mana, I looked around. Instead of being surrounded by the different types of animals, I was only surrounded by lush plants.

A figure walked through the plants, and came up to me. It was the same one that had been with him through the other tests.

Her skin was a deep beautiful dark brown. Although one could clearly see her substantial age, you couldn’t say she was diminished by it. Her eyes were slanted like a cats. I saw her blink, but instead of up and down her eyelids went left and right. Her hair was made up of several types of snakes, which seemed to play with each other. She had several types of vines winding up her legs to just below her navel. Each vine seemed to carry an identically sized fruit. The fruits were varied, but I did see a tiny watermelon.

“Gaia.” I gave a bow. I just then realized the personage I had been with this entire time was Gaia. Even if I felt my power grow with every summoning, I was nowhere near her level.

She smiled at me. Suddenly I felt a familiar weight on my shoulder. Moro sat there, looking longingly at Gaia.

I smiled as I gave the nature fairy a small nudge. This was likely to be the only time Moro would get to see Gaia, at least for a while. “Go on, she won’t hurt you.”

Of course this was all an act for Gaia. Obviously she wouldn’t hurt her own nature fairy.

Gaia seemed to take it at face value. After hugging Moro, and playing for a few seconds, she turned her attention back to me.

“You have showed exemplary skill in understanding my children.” I nodded at the praise. It was true.

“So I’ve decided to give Moro a bit of questioning. Don’t worry it’s already done.” Seeing the small hitch in my face she said that right away.

When did that happen? Fuck. What if Moro told her something bad? I hadn’t treated the nature fairy bad, mostly because it was cute.

“Don’t look so scared. Moro has only good things to say about you. You treat all of your fairies pleasantly, even if you don’t always make sense to them.”

She seemed to be debating something. She began to sit down. The plants around her hurried to create a comfortable chair for her. The vines and flowers wove together to form a nice looking sitting area.

“Yes. I’ve decided. As the final upgrade of Moro’s power, I will do something special.” Suddenly a glowing green orb, with swirls of brown, appeared.

“Only eight others have ever made it to the final upgrade for the nature fairy. As with them I will have you choose a plant as the final upgrade.”

A plant? The thought of upgrading to a plant never crossed my mind. It made sense though. Plants would obviously be under Gaia’s realm of power.

“For you though, I will do something special as I’ve said. You have convinced me to rehabilitate Heather instead of destroying her. For showing me the flaw in my view towards one of my children, I give you this.” The orb slowly began to swirl faster and faster. As it did she continued.

“I have seen how you love my children. You’ve cured the child between me and Sylph. You have made plants into something much more potent than they could have ever become on their own. You have tried your best to spread that, that healing field, to the world.”

I was really glad she couldn’t see inside my dungeon. She probably would say something completely different if she could.

The rotating began to quicken even more. It was so fast that it began to leave after images. Suddenly it stopped. Instead of the perfect orb, it was a misshapen hideous looking seed.

“This is yours. It is what I have come to call a ‘Blank Seed’. You can use this to fully create your own plant, with which Moro will fuse. Remember, you will also gain the ability of this plant.” Her eyes brightened for a moment.

“You haven’t made any other fairy rank four yet, have you?”

I shook my head. Not wanting to tell her about Kretchof.

“Good. When a fairy gets to rank four, they obtain a special ability. For nature that ability is to allow the summoner to use all abilities while the fairy is summoned. That means Moro won’t have to be in that form for you to maintain the abilities.”

If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

With that she disappeared, allowing me time to contemplate the seed before me.

What does Kretchof do then? Davros didn’t tell me any of this.

It wasn’t really that surprising though. The dark god of intelligence would obviously keep any intelligence to himself that he could.

I looked at the seed. It was saturated with mana flows. Every vein of mana was completely filled to the brim with nature mana. I felt like I could literally change this seed to any plant if I was careful enough.

I quickly opened my research notes on plants and seeds. Everything I knew about growing plants was held within.

The end result is what mattered. The ability Moro would get, would be passed on to me. I needed to find out the most powerful way to manipulate this seed to grant me the best possible outcome.

If I gave it light mana I could potentially make it regenerate to give me a permanent bonus to my regen speed. If I added in earth mana I could make it shield me from harm.

Moro was waiting near me, seemingly anxious. The nature fairy kept looking around, as if worried about something. That’s right. This is some sort of test. I don’t want to fail it.

If I made the ultimate plant, only to have it torn away from me because I failed… Well I’d probably kill someone.

“Moro, you are the one that will be most closely intimate with this plant. What should I do with it?”

Moro visibly relaxed after that. I was glad I chose to ask, obviously Moro knew what was going on.

I continued. “Why don’t you come over here, and we can work on this together. I will shape this in accordance with whatever you think is best.” Even if I came out with a shitty seed, I would still get Gaia to like me a bit more. Having another of the Elder Gods on my side would be far better than one of my fairies having a powerful upgrade.

It was a numbers game.

A screen popped up.

Select a plant type.

Moro and I spoke for a bit. Moro wanted something that would not get destroyed easily.

“Well the most obvious choice is a tree, or grass. Since procreation isn’t your main goal, those two would be the best choices. Of them, trees tend to live a lot longer. Grass is eaten by most herbivores, but actual wood is eaten by far fewer. If the leaves are eaten they can just grow back.”

Agreeing with line of thought, Moro accepted the tree idea. I wanted the tree because it might give me a defensive bonus.

Select a base for the seed.

Below the screen was type of dial. I had 100 points to spend. I was given many choices, and many augmentations I could use on the seed. The basic seed size was large. I could decrease it, but that would cost a lot of points. 1 point for every 1 decimeter of radius reduction. The damn thing was at least 15 centimeters in diameter.

Moro wanted for the seeds to be able to have a large chance of reproduction. I used up 80 points to change it. I made it similar to a pinecone. “The pinecone actually only sends its seeds out after a fire, when many trees would have been destroyed. That way it will have the greatest chance to flourish.”

The appearance and size was the same, but I made the requirements to start sprouting some disaster. I didn’t even get to choose the disaster. I guess any disaster to the other trees would make the seed sprout.

The required time for the seed to sprout was set at the middle bar. It would only take a year to sprout the bud. At the far end of the spectrum was 100 years, at the other end was a day. I only had 20 points. I decided to put the rest in making it take longer.

I explained it to Moro. “Well, if it grows too quickly as soon as it is made, then people might want to try and take some for themselves. We want the trees to live free, not be tainted by human farms.” The real reason was that I didn’t want the thing to grow while other players that knew of Voice could find out. I was going to keep this quest as low profile as possible.

Instead of costing points, I actually gained quite a bit. With the excess points, I increased the variety of places the seedling could sprout in. It could survive in almost any environment. Nothing short of desert or frozen tundra would stop it. Complete submergence in water would pose a big problem as well.

Select the base attributes of the plant.

After convincing Moro, I made the tree able to filter large amounts of light, as well as store them for long periods of time. I also made it require small amounts of water, but able to contain large amounts. Even carbon dioxide requirements were low.

Basically the tree required low amounts of any resource, but could store large amounts. The perfect survivalist. Things like resistance to diseases, or herbivores were left quite low. So if something wanted the tree dead, it would most likely die. Although, if left alone, it would be able to flourish to an insane level.

The tree only made one seed every 100 years. That was the max. I made Moro believe this was for the best for the same reason as the seed. So it would take 200 years for the second of these plants to sprout once the first reached maturation. I also made maturation 800 years. Again that was the max. So from birth to birth would be 1000 years.

There was no limit to root or branch size. I had enough points from changing the amount of time to produce a seed, and growth speed, to make that happen.

I also made it so that any excess resources went into directly growing the tree before they expired.

A bonus side effect of the long time it took for the tree to do anything was that the lifespan was unlimited. That was pretty cool. I had created an immortal plant.

Select a defensive trait for the plant.

We talked about it for a while. “Sure, I know some. The best defensive plants are ones that are highly poisonous. There is a tree in my world. It’s so poisonous that even standing under it in the rain will cause animals to break out in a rash.

If it’s defending that is the way we should go.”

I had to add in a lot of water and darkness mana in the plant to do that. I had many things I wanted this plant to do, but I would have to be careful on how I got Moro to agree to it.

Suddenly the correct mana paths seemed to burn themselves into my mind. I used all of the defensive trait points to create an absurdly powerful poison. I had to use a dial to modify the amounts of each of the mana types for each segment of poison.

Basically the poison from the tree spread in the air as it let out the oxygen waste. It was a combination of powerful hallucinogen, and a crippling paralytic. A single whiff from the air that came off of it would leave an elephant laying on the ground dreaming of ants consuming the stars.

The poison will only take effect if the target is within ten feet or so of the tree, but any part of the tree can exude the poison.

Please name the species of tree you have created.

Moro wanted to do the honors of naming. Since I wouldn’t get anything from naming it, I let it happen.

Congratulations! You have created a brand new plant! You, with Moro’s help, have created the plant Tree of Timeless Life. The Tree of Timeless Life has been planted in Gaia’s Garden.

It was then that Gaia returned. She ignored Moro and me, and examined the seed we had created. “This seed has exceeded my expectations.” She glanced at Moro. A silent conversation happened in an instant. “The real test was seeing if you would allow Moro to have any say in the final evolution path. I’m happy to say you passed.” She smiled then waved her hand. I found myself back at the summoning circle. A small seed sat in the center of the circle. I quickly recalled Moro, before reading the messages I was being bombarded with.

You are the first player to summon a rank 4 fairy outside of the use of an item. You have gained 15 intelligence.  You have gained 20 fame.

Moro now has the power of the Tree of Timeless Life. Moro, and the user are able to excrete an extremely powerful neurotoxin. Moro, and the user, will no longer age once they respectively reach adulthood.

Rank 4 fairies can reproduce. The requirements are tough, but it is possible. Moro can only reproduce once every 100 years. The user can only reproduce once every 100 years. The offspring of Moro, or the user, will have maximized stats where possible, not to exceed the maximum possibilities that offspring might actually have.

The summoner can use any of Moro’s abilities at any time.

Rank 4 fairies no longer return to the Ether Realm when they die. Moro will enter into your body to rest when Moro’s Hp reaches 0.

Some of your abilities have high synchronization rate.  The poison you create can be sent into the barbs of your body. The barbs may also be used to absorb the blood, and mana, from a target.

The results of the final upgrading of Moro were far beyond what I could ever hope for. No longer aging? Able to excrete the neurotoxin that I gave the tree? Being able to use all other abilities?

Any one of those might make me a powerful player, all of them together was absurd. Although the aging thing didn’t really effect me, since I was a player. It would be interesting if I continued to play this game until I grew old. Although, no game is popular for that long.

The tree I made was actually heavily based on some tree DI seemed to have made. With the addition of the poison of course. The poison was my favorite.

That was the final upgrade. Now, some of you might ask what has been happening to some of my other pet projects while I did this. Like what about the dungeon? Well it is actually very interesting. You see the dungeon…

(Sorry lol. Had to do it. That’s the avg length of the chap. Since I’m a bit late I’m going to make the chapter a bit longer)

The dungeon was actually evolving thanks to the Quasi Chaos Lifeform. He had spent his entire time expanding the dungeon. Apparently he had a way to actually sense other dungeons. With the promise that I would bring his race back, he ferociously went to connect to every dungeon he could.

Within those four months of city building, he had already connected a few dungeons. After summoning my mom, he began to connect to every one he could.

I moved the shrine that Davros was allowed to use to the one in the main temple. He still had to provide me with the same ratio of rewards as earlier, and even had to send in low level demons occasionally. That way my dungeon could benefit from the research on them.

During the short time I was summoning the fairies, Chao had already made the total connection amount total 12.

The dungeon itself underwent several changes as well. Each level of the dungeon now was a perfectly flat plane, meaning that none of the layers connected except at the stairs.

Each layer was stacked 100 feet below the one before it. More layers were being added every month. The total layer count was 10. With Chao’s innate dungeon control, the levels of the dungeon didn’t disappear when the re-arranging of the dungeon took place.

He even made it somehow able to change each layer on different days and intervals. The intervals were all random, but generally the further down one went, the quicker the interval for change.

The spiders themselves had been shut into a forced evolution ecosystem. With the way Chao forced them to evolve, it seemed as if he knew exactly how to evolution worked.

The web they spun became more robust, and they spun it quicker. Instead of attacking each other, they worked together and made ‘colony webs’. Webs where they would all live together and share food. A large portion was always sent to the queen.

The rodent and insect population sored. Under Chao’s direction, the monsters from other dungeons were quickly subdued and consumed by the two populations. He left just enough monsters from other dungeons to allow them to actually have a population as well.

All of the monsters slowly underwent changes while in the dungeon. They slowly lost their original affinities, and began to take on the chaos affinity. The webs were not ‘Dark-kin Spider Webs’. They were ‘Chaos-Bred Spider Webs’.

The change in affinity made a world of difference. This webbing was extremely resilience to any form of mana. If it got out the gods might notice though. So I had to keep myself from selling it. I still had it horded though. The web was great for creating traps.

The traps made no longer disappeared. It seemed as if the dungeon solely existed to please Chao. Levels no longer mattered. Even killing players didn’t really matter. Of course he was only a Quasi Chaotic Lifeform.

Although he told me my mom had lent him her power. So the changes in the dungeon were mostly thanks to her. The only thing they couldn’t change was the rate that my dungeon took monsters from other dungeons, nor the amount. I still had to spend points to do that.

A few groups of people had wandered in during this time.  They were all quickly slaughtered once they entered the second floor. They were only level 100s after all. I made a demand of Chao. I had him adjust the levels of each floor. Level 100 and below wouldn’t be able to survive on the second floor. Level 200 and under couldn’t survive on the third floor. And so on.

After the fifth floor, Chao couldn’t increase the difficulty any more. He said we needed more weapons, armor, and more powerful monsters to be able to increase it further.

That isn’t to say the second floor is easy for level 200s. It is actually quite difficult. It’s just that anyone below level 200 would have no hope of even getting past the first few encounters without an absurd amount of skill and luck.

The boss rooms were not actually part of the dungeon proper. They could only be reached by teleport pads. The same goes for the final boss room.

Forget about fairness or difficulty, the final boss, Chao, wasn’t even possible to beat. To get to the final boss one would have to beat all of the sub and mini bosses. After that, one would have to enter a room that closed shut behind them. After entering the room there were only two ways out.

Teleportation into the boss room, or death. The room was filled with teleporters. Each 1 foot square was a teleporter. Each teleporter sent the one that stepped on it to a random place in the room. This continued until the final teleporter was reached, and they were sent to the boss room.

The biggest obstacles in the teleporter room: the teleporters could not be differentiated, and the entire room was filled with the death cloud aura I had made while Kretchof was in charge. Since there were eight directions one could go after every teleport, they had 1/8 chance of actually getting closer to the final teleporter.

The final teleporter didn’t directly touch any of the places people were teleported to! The person would have to jump to it to actually get to the teleporter.

Even if all of that was somehow done, the person would fall down 100 feet. The end of the fall was in pure lava. If they could emerge from that, they would have to face all of the sub bosses again. If they somehow beat the sub bosses, they would be forcefully teleported to a random location in the dungeon by Chao.

If they could withstand teleportation magic, then they would have to fight a boss that was: A) completely impervious to all mana, and B) could teleport at will. If they could beat Chao despite the stat loss, the fall into lava, and resist the teleportation, then Chao’s auto skill would activate. He would begin absorbing all mana and life in the vicinity to fuel himself. So in the end, the player would be killing themselves.

The dungeon had all  but become undefeatable. The only thing I had to do was promise Chao I would continue to summon Chaotic Lifeforms, as I got the materials.

After finishing the upgrades, and thinking on the dungeon a bit, I heard an urgent cry. A female guard ran up to me, out of breath. “Lord Voice! We are being attacked!”

As an aside, I would like to say that finals are coming up soon. After they are over I should be able to pump out more chapters quickly. Lots of Love~

Also, this is the last consecutive chapter where Voice will be upgrading things. After this will have a bit more action and fun to it.
