Short summary of the last chapter:
Spoiler :
Spent an in-game week helping the town and growing more powerful. He learned a few skills, and made them into group skills.
Also, let me know if anything is wrong with the chapter! Be sure to comment!
The demon knew of his master’s impatience, so forced his army to be ready early. Instead of the fifteen days he was given, he only took a little over a week to get his 50-man army to his master. His master had put them through a hell like training course for a day. Two of his men almost died, but they all ended up living.
His master praised him. “Hm, these are better than expected. I approve. Now you have no excuse if you lose. Do everything within your power to kill him; otherwise you will be the one I torture.” His master walked off.
After letting his men rest for a day, he started the march towards River’s Cross. His informants said that was where the boy was residing. His informants were around that area, but had been plagued by undead. They couldn’t keep a close eye on Mar’s Chosen while they had to fight. Every time one of his informants died, they came back to kill their comrades.
The demon was under strict orders not to kill the people of River’s Cross, or any one besides the boy, unless they interfered with killing him. Therefore, the army had to sneak all the way to River’s Cross. Overall, it was going to take at least another week before they got there.
The trek was hard. They group had to stealthily collect food for fifty people. It would have been hard just to get that much food each day, but doing it without alerting people was a bit more difficult. Luckily, the group had been trained to survive with low rations for long periods.
The demon could also produce a few demonic beasts each night, but it wasn’t enough to keep that many fed for very long. After a week of hard trekking, they finally made it to River’s Cross. The demon had two members of his army pose as a traveling couple.
Their jobs were to infiltrate the city and find Mar’s Chosen. If he wasn’t in the city anymore, they were to find out where he went. The demon made a plan to force the mayor of the town to divulge the information. The demon was ordered not to kill anyone, but he could still threaten people.
The group of two sent word back immediately. The city that had been owned by slavers only a week prior, was armed to the teeth! Everyone had at least a spear, but many also had bows. Although the weapons were all made out of wood, the houses were all made of stone. The slavers destroyed all the homes though. How did these miserable fools build it back so quickly?
That wasn’t the end of it though. The people all seemed to be much closer than before the slavers captured the city. No money was exchanged between them, not even a barter system was in place. They just freely gave the goods!
Since they were so trusting of each other, the demon thought it would be an easy matter to get them to trust his men. The demon was wrong. The mayor had apparently told the entire city to be wary of all people they didn’t personally know. So, not only did it seem like these people would put their lives down for each other, they wouldn’t even allow others into their group.
Damnit! This is going to be harder than I thought.
The demon studied the city for a few days before making his move. They had a very set schedule. Twice a day two groups of people would leave the city. Once a few hours before breakfast, and once a few hours before dinner. Those were the only two groups that left, although a merchant ship arrived on the second day. He docked in an underbelly of the city.
We can probably sneak in there.
The demon was making plans as to how best capture the city should things go wrong. The two groups would come back with a mountain of food. The demon was surprised to find out how well the gatherers could find the vegetables. To his knowledge, humans had no ability for that.
The hunters usually brought back three to five wolves, a bear, and some fruits. They seemed like they could get a lot more, but instead were restraining themselves. None of the wolves remains were thrown out of the city. The demon decided they must have some sort of waste removal in the city. After all, how could one use that much fur and bones? The fur might be made into armor, but it would take time. Time the blacksmith could use making money.
The demon seemed to forget about the level of comradery the town felt.
The demon decided to stage an attack on the hunters. Not enough to kill them, just enough to injure some. The injuries would cause a disruption in food supply. Maybe the town would be more willing to cooperate if they were starved for a while.
(The army arrived at River’s Cross a week after Voice left. I tried to make it clear, but it wasn’t. They left for River’s Cross at the same time Voice left River’s Cross.)
Voice’s POV
After I collected EDI we left River’s Cross. I had already shown someone how to get more healing herbs, and how to make a basic potion out of them. I had arranged for someone to cook the food the hunters gathered, and Heather had shown a few people how to find and harvest the vegetables in the field. I told the cook just to pour in the potion, teaching someone my tricks was not my style.
I showed some of the gatherers how to dry and pickle food, and recommended they keep a small stockpile of food for emergencies. While I was thinking of food I had Heather gather some vegetables, and a few pine cones. I wanted to test out my enhanced plant growth ability while traveling. I also made sure to get as many glass bottles as I could. I needed to be able to make potions. Since I saved the village it was the least they could do.
I also ordered my Lich Kretchof to secretly guard the city against any one that seemed to be surrounding it. I was sure the slavers were going to be angry that I just wiped a bunch of the pieces of shit off the face of Solun. Since he had full restrictions on I could communicate with him no matter the distance. If anything happened he would let me know.
It’d be great if the city got captured again. Then I could save it and get even MORE rewards! One of the children in the city asked to come with me. She was a young girl, maybe about seven or eight, and wore the tale-tell armor of River’s Cross. She carried one of the smaller spears I created, and even had a bow and a quiver of arrows. She had dark blonde hair, and hazel eyes. She was as cute as a button.
I was immediately going to reply with no, but EDI looked at the child with affection. I didn’t want the hassle of feeding someone that couldn’t provide for me in some way. I would also have to protect the little shit. Mulling it over I decided I could use the kid as collateral if EDI decided to try and leave me. It was a common tactic I used when I would ‘date’ girls. Give them something they crave, and leave little hints that I would take it away if they displeased me.
The problem with EDI was that she seemed fairly intelligent, despite her attitude towards NPCs and animals. It would be a bit harder to make her fear me leaving the girl without seeming evil. EDI gave me pleading eyes. “Please?” she whispered.
“Alright, you can come, but only because EDI seems to want you to come so much. I have conditions.” She gave a curt nod. I almost scoffed. I mean trying to be cute is great and all, but I was using Inspect already. I knew she was deceiving me. She was 80% beguiling, and 15% blood hungry. I decided to let her come since the person that sent her, unless she was out for revenge herself, would most likely send another if I didn’t let her come.
Lily Level 1
Ex-slave/ VillagerHealth: 100/100Stamina:100/100
“I have three conditions. First condition: You must do everything I say without question. Do you understand?” She nodded. “Good, Second condition: You must learn to be self-sufficient. You might be able to use those weapons well, but you are only level one. You will have to train hard to actually be able to do anything in combat.” Another nod. “Third condition: You will not leave my service without my permission.” She looked worried for a second, then nodded. “EDI do you agree as well?” EDI eagerly nodded.
“Good, then you can come.” She beamed when I said this. I almost rolled my eyes. I already had a plan to make her leave. I was going to put her through Hell’s Training.
“Voice,” Ancestor was worried, “You do know she is most likely trying to kill you right?” Yeah, but I figured that if I wore her out each day she would be too tired to attempt anything. Plus I want to see if I can force her to my side. After all, I haven’t been using my Con-Artist skill nearly as much as I want.
“Alright, but remember, if she attacks you she might easily overwhelm you. She is most likely not level one.” I nodded. Obviously she had some sort of trick up her sleeve. The possibility of her being controlled was high though. It was fairly hard for someone so young to be so composed around someone they were going to try to kill.
We left the city after telling Elvina we were going to take her, and getting some more bandages. I signed some papers and a blue box popped up. Before we left, I raided the library. Well what was left of it. Only a few books were still perfectly intact. I could have taken some of the other books, but I didn’t feel right letting my Compendium absorb crappy books. I ended up taking only two: ‘Discovery of Divines’ and ‘Training for the Mind’.
You have adopted Lily of River’s Cross. Lily of River’s Cross is now your child by law. Undine has blessed your adoption. You now have all rights of what Lily’s father would have. You may now see Lily’s full stats.
I took the opportunity to look at Lily’s stats.
Stats WindowNameLily Of River’s CrossClassNoneHealth100Mana100Stamina100Level1Current TitleNoneHealth Regen/Sec1.0Mana Regen/Sec1.0Stamina Regen/Sec1.0Strength10Agility10Wisdom10Intelligence10Endurance10Dexterity10Luck10Vitality10Fame0
Wow, she really is a level one character. Hmmm, this is going to be tricky. I could probably get to know her real stats if I have her train in certain ways, but there is the possibility that she would make it seem like they are real.
Even with the knowledge that she was going to betray me I allowed her to join. With that, I could make EDI more complacent. When Lily finally betrayed me I’d also have a huge amount of power over EDI. Power in the form of guilt.
“EDI you are in charge of Lily. Make sure she doesn’t get into any trouble. We are going now.”
EDI smiled, “Ok, and thanks for letting her come with us~” EDI hugged Lily. Fucking girls and their maternal instincts. I know guys get the feeling of needing to protect something as well, but that feeling in general is useless. The more you have to protect, the more you have to lose.
That day we covered a lot of ground. I was heading straight for the southern entrance to Dwarven Hall, so we had to pass through the forest. While traveling I practiced getting control over my weapon. By the end of the first day I could already get the twin blades out, or make the spear tip appear, in almost no time. Of course this was while I wasn’t in combat; I’d have to actually use this while fighting to make sure I was good enough to do that in combat.
In the forest if found something interesting. A small blood-red flower sprouted from the trunk of a dead tree. Its petal all faces towards the sky. It had a center that was similar to a sunflower, but it was white.
Blood Lotus
Found on the body of decaying trees. A Blood Lotus is a mushroom.
If combined with common weed it will make a common potency of healing potion.
If combined with Moss Blossom it will make a common potency of stamina regen potion.

Registering…
Compiling information…
…
WHAT!?
I had been in the forest many times, but I had never seen one of these! I looked it up in my compendium.
To summarize the information I got from the book: The Blood Lotus ‘head’, the entire top part of the flower, was used to create the potion. The stem could be used in a stamina regen potion as well. I found two of these flowers on this trunk. I had decided to do a bit of experimenting on them. I SHALL BE THE HERALD FOR THE SECOND COMING OF THE OVER POTIONS!
When we made camp that night, somewhat near the dead trunk, I planted a common weed seed.
I summoned Tear and Sol from inside of me. “Tear I want you to water the seeds I’m going to plant. Sol I’ll need you to stay here to provide a light for me to work by.” Using my two fairies was advantageous. With Tear helping water the plants, and Sol lighting the area up, I didn’t even have to leave the general area. Seeing the dead trunk also gave me an idea for a new type of mana fusion.
I planted the common weed seed, and fed it the ratio to make it quickly grow. I fed the steady supply until I ran out of mana. The common weed was about halfway through its total growth cycle. I just needed to wait a few minutes to be able to finish it off.
By the way, the more powerful the plant, the less I decrease the growth time by. I need to put in twice as much mana to speed up the growth of the green healing herbs.
After fully nurturing the common weed, I harvested it. Using my basic alchemy set I started my work. I made sure to note every stroke of my pestle, including the angle and intensity. I only had two plants to work with, but I might have figured out a way around that.
The material ended up as a red goop.
Red Healing Goop
A combination of Blood Lotus and Common Weed. Add this to water to make a health potion. Better ingredients would make a better potion.
I analyzed the amount of water I told Tear to put in. Green Healing potions worked best if the water just barely saturated the goop, so that was what I was going to try.
After finishing it I put it into a bottle.
Red Healing PotionMaterial QualityCommonWork QualityExpertBase Restoration50This potion was created by the player Voice0fReason. The detail that went into making this potion is outstanding.
Total healing power of 119 points.
I dried the potion, and started on the next. I did the same thing, but added slightly more water this time. It only healed 108 points. So my theory was right. At least healing potions gain the best effect when just barely saturated.
You gained 5 wisdom for learning the secret to maximizing the power of healing potions.
UGH! I’m literally one point away from getting my skill enhancement up another rank!\
I couldn’t complain though. I had figured out a major secret for making alchemy potions. I made sure that EDI and the brat couldn’t see what I was doing. I didn’t really care if Heather saw or not, but she was out hunting wolves. With the amount of healing these basic potions gave, I didn’t think I’d ever need to use green herbs again. Of course that was only true if my next plan came to fruition.
I did the whole ‘Gaia’s Ritual’ to cause a tree to fall. After that I started channeling the nearby dark mana and nature mana. I had Sol go float by the girls. I channeled the mana at the same ration as growth, substituting dark mana for light mana.
The experiment was a success. The tree started withering until it was nothing more than a stump. The stump started sprouting mushrooms and fungus. I stemmed the flow after I had realized the tree wasn’t decaying anymore. It had cost me a grand total of 1000 mana! If I had been doing that without the assistance of environmental mana it would have been impossible! I shook my head at my slightly OP ability. It took fifteen minutes to fully decay the tree.
If you come across this story on Amazon, it's taken without permission from the author. Report it.
There were three lovely red flowers on the tree. I picked them, and started the process of creating potions. After I created the potions I planted the seeds from the tree. I also used my growth magic to speed up the trees growing. No sense getting Gaia mad at me. I continued this until dawn.
In the end I used up all of my bottles to house the potions. The potions steadily got more potent. The last batch I made even healed 150 points.
I found out that only the petals needed to be used to create the potions, but the center of the flower (the part where the seeds were) had to be planted on decaying trees to grow. At least I wouldn’t have to cut more than one tree down a night anymore. The trees would only grow up to ten of the plants before expiring. After that the required materials to grow the Blood Lotus would be consumed.
I made hundreds of low quality potions that night. By the time the sun rose I had enough information on them to guarantee a critical his every time the timer on it went down. Drying them was the same process as the green healing potions.
Heather brought back an intact wolf body the next morning. From the look of her fur she had been in a battle with more than just the one. She’s entitled to eat as much as she wants as long as EDI gets enough as well. I guess I have to feed Lily now too.
The second day was much like the first, a lot of traveling. Lily only seemed to speak when someone spoke to her first. EDI wanted to try to pull her out of whatever mental shell she was in, but also didn’t want to be a burden on Lily.
I delegated the job of getting Lily to speak, to Sol. Since Sol never really stopped talking it was perfect. Although Sol doesn’t seem to understand certain social faux pas. The first question Sol asked the girl was: “So where are your parents?” Even if I didn’t like the girl I thought that was a bit much, but she only shrugged.
I sent a message to Kretchof to summon some undead that didn’t expire after 24 hours. I ordered him to have those secretly scout the area around River’s Cross. That way if anyone came to get revenge now that I was gone, he could at least delay them while I figured out a way to get news to Elvina.
On the second day, I practiced using the weapon in combat. The spear was definitely the easiest to use. I attacked a wolf to practice. We came across a small group of wolves while on our way to the mountain range that held Dwarven Hall.
It was only three wolves. Heather, EDI, and I took out two of them. We ambushed them while they were napping.
“EDI, I want you to stall one. You can damage it a little, but don’t kill it. We need to let Lily have a little battle experience.” EDI started to object. “Remember, you said she would go through training. This is the best method I know for that.”
EDI frowned, but nodded. “Alright, I can damage it a lot though, right?” “Sure, I guess.”
We all went to do our jobs while Lily watched. Heather tore her wolf to shreds very quickly. The wolves were only level 30, so it wasn’t hard for her. EDI was having more trouble. Not with handling the wolf, but with not killing it. It was harder to hold something off than it was to kill it. I equipped my Wolves’ Bane title to deal more damage to them.
I jumped out first. I landed a critical hit on the wolf. I ran towards it, before it was aware it was endangered I had stabbed it. I made the thin blade at the top of my staff extend, as I stabbed into the wolf’s left hind leg.
Its health dropped by a quarter, and it was bleeding. The wolf jumped away, tearing the spear out of its leg as it went. The bleeding only increased. It limped as it tried to circle me. I opened my staff into to swords.
Using two swords is actually very hard. It had the same concept as using two mana types at once. You had to pay attention to two independent things at once. I couldn’t actually handle that with swords. I basically had to have one sword extended backwards against my forearm, while I attacked with the other. At least that way it would be useful to block with.
Using the single sword was much easier, although it felt weird not holding a weapon with two hands. When the wolf would lunge at me, I would intercept it with a slash. When it would attack from one side, I’d block with the sword against my left forearm. I would then attack with the other before it got the chance to get back into its position.
The fight took me a solid five minutes to complete. At one point Heather tried to intervene, but I made her help EDI. The battle was simple, but lengthy. Higher-level wolves took longer for me to kill since they had more defense and health. The red lines definitely helped. I managed several critical hits because of them.
Once I was done I signaled for Lily. “Lily come here.” She complied, staring wide eyed at the battle going on between the last wolf and the rest of our party. She took out her spear like I told her. “Good, now what I want you to do is try attacking that wolf.
She was very clumsy. She couldn’t hit the damn thing, even after a dozen tries! UGH! FUCKING BRAT!
Ancestor chimed in. As always Ancestor gave useful advice. “Voice, how about you hold the wolf down with earth mana? Even if you only slowed it a bit, it would benefit her.”
It was a good idea. One that I put into practice after thinking about the best way. I made my own mana create earth spears. I pierced all of the wolf’s legs at once. It yelped as it tried to jump away. Being tired, having low health, and being impaled was not a good combination for the wolf. Lily cautiously approached the thing.
“Heather and EDI, walk in front of her, don’t give the wolf a chance to attack her! Sol focus healing on Lily. Tear cover the wolf’s nose and mouth with water for three seconds. Then rest for three. Sting it a few times then repeat that till it’s dead!” I conveyed all of this in moments.
Leadership has boosted the effect of your orders. Your orders are more likely to be carried out perfectly.
My orders were carried out perfectly. Tear summoned a small amount of water around the wolf’s mouth and nose, and Heather and EDI guided Lily to it. Lily didn’t seem like she wanted to kill the thing, so I helped her with that. I grabbed her spear from behind. I had already made the spears reinforced with environmental mana.
I made her hands hold the spear with earth mana. I forced the staff forward with my own hands. She still got the feeling of killing the thing. She started crying after the spear pierced the wolf. The wolf only had a few dozen hit points left anyway, but she was the one that killed it.
Now let me say this before you get all angry. I would not have done that to a normal child. The reason I made her do that is I was sure she was trying to kill me anyway. Even when she was ‘crying’ I saw a 65% chance of beguiling, and 20% chance of mirth. Bitch was trying to make me feel bad!
EDI gave me a dirty look. I inwardly sighed. Now I had to fix this shit. I shook my head as I patted Lily on the back. “It’s ok Lily. If you hadn’t killed it, then it might have killed other people. What would you do if it attacked River’s Cross?” Her crying increased. Oddly the beguiling went away, as did the mirth. It seemed like this part at least was real. Unless she was just better at hiding her emotions.
She stuttered as she spoke. “I-I know, but *sniff* it was so sad! WAAHHHH!” Oh shut up fucking piss bag.
I had a grand total of 0 sympathy for her. Why should I care if I hurt the feelings of someone trying to murder me? I had to at least pretend to care though. EDI was watching. She was someone I really wanted to be a part of my team. It wouldn’t hurt to make her think I was some sort of hard but fair, father type.
I patted Lily. “There now, there now. You did really good. You know what?” I spoke in a very gentle voice. I bent down until I was eye level with Lily. She looked hopefully at me. “You deserve a reward!” I smiled at her. She wiped her running nose.
“I do?” I nodded.
“Yup! And I have just the thing!” I pulled out the fairy food the priest had given me. “Want to try feeding Sol?”
She looked confused but nodded. “I thought Fairies don’t eat?”
“That’s mostly true, but you can feed them specially made food. I got this as a special present from someone very important (lie) to me.” I gave her a couple of specks of the food. The fairy food was like sand. She held it out to Sol. Sol came close and seemed to sniff it.
“Offer Sol some.” She did as I told her. Sol took a bite of the food. Only one speck disappeared. Sol started glowing colors like a rainbow. Prisms of light came off of Sol’s body. Sol flew around the girl that provided the food. Sol seemed downright gleeful. Lily looked happy to have Sol’s attention like that.
Tear looked sad, that is if a jelly fish can look sad. I whispered to Tear. “Don’t worry, I’m sorry I don’t have any fairy food for water fairies. I am going to learn to make some though (lie). When I do I’ll let you have as much as you want. Sound good?” Tear bobbed up and down. I took that as a yes.
We traveled for a week like this. Wake up, breakfast, journey to the mountain. Heather would lead wolves to us, and we would kill them. I always made sure to kill one to practice my weapon. If there was more than one Lily had to kill the second. If there were three Heather got to kill one. Any more and Heather and EDI would take out all but two.
At night I would cut down a tree to harvest my Blood Lotus flowers. I would make a few potions, then go to sleep. We took watches. The first shift was always me. Heather and EDI would alternate between the second and third shift. The third shift was the hardest since you couldn’t make up the lost sleep.
I used the excuse of making potions to take the first shift. Lily didn’t get a shift since she wasn’t powerful enough to stand a chance against enemies for more than a few seconds. We reached the mountains without much problem. There was never a shortage of food, and I think Lily decided to stop crying at all the wolves she killed.
Lily had leveled up quickly. She was already level 19. I had even leveled up once. The monsters we fought never seemed to exceed the mid to high 30’s.
I stored the bones of all of the animals for later use. I also had Lily run ahead of us, with Heather of course. She would have to touch a tree ahead of us, and then run to our opposite side. If we got ahead of her, she had to start several trees back and begin again. She was worn out way too fast for my taste.
I put my skill points into Wisdom. The results were acceptable. My Skill Enhancement got upgraded to Expert. Since it was more than a rank higher than Skill Mastery, Skill Mastery got upgraded to Adept. The best part about that was that I could now fuse Group Skills!
I obviously did that right away. The only skills I could fuse at the time were: Automatic and Combat Learning.
It gave me:
Technique Thief
Current Level: Novice Level 1 Exp 0.00%
This skill is always on. This skill will automatically add techniques you see to your move list. This skill can steal any ability based on weapon proficiency. This does not include spells.
Each level in this skill decreases the minimum number of times you need to see to be able to steal the technique. For every rank, you increase this skill you will be able to steal more difficult techniques.
Abilities learned from this skill will not be as potent as if you were taught them. You must become proficient in the weapon that uses the ability to fully utilize it.
You will have 10% potency to all stolen abilities when you first gain them. You can increase this amount by increasing the level of this skill, or becoming proficient in the weapon the ability is stemmed from.
You will have 5% potency to all stolen abilities if you do not know how to use the weapon.
I could fuse it to Combat Learning, so I did. The required exp was so low, that it didn’t even effect the needed exp of Combat Learning. I did get a notice after fusing it though.
I watched Heather and EDI whenever they were fighting after that. I was just totally stoked about being able to fuse group skills. I mean I had been wanting to do that since the first time I made one. It was a little underpowered from what I was wanting, but I accepted it since I got such a cool skill.
‘Discovery of Divines’ was about how the Elder Gods first came to Solun. How they started the spread of their religions, and the war that immediately broke out because of it.
‘Training for the Mind’ was basically a puzzle book. It had a lot of different puzzles and riddles. It was fun to challenge my mind for a few minutes.
My Compendium was 10% complete. I really wanted to hurry it along, but I knew that the books put in it would somehow effect its evolution. I wanted the evolution of my Compendium to be able to see through time, so I had to make it as intelligent as possible. I probably needed to put in a bunch of books on theory of magic as well. That was one of the reasons I chose the Divine book. It was about the gods. If something had the power of the gods, then it should be able to at least see the future.
I had also decided to get some paper to make my own book. I was going to put all of my notes on mana in it. That way I could force it to a magical evolution.
The mountains came into view on the second to last night. They were huge, but we couldn’t see anything that was an obvious entrance. On the last night before we left the forest I got a message from Kretchof.
A force of about fifty people had arrived near River’s Cross. Two of them had detached and gone into the city to mingle. I ordered him to whittle down their numbers slowly. Kretchof might have had an infinite number of undead at his disposal, but he could only have so many at once. If he kept attacking them over time, then they would begin to die off naturally.
I gave him a strict plan. First curse the group, maybe by a disease or something that gave them nightmares so they couldn’t sleep. After they were exhausted from the constant threat of death, then he was to strike. I only allowed him to use Guerrilla Warfare. Take out small bits of the army at each time.
I knew of one of his abilities that would be amazing if he got to use it. If he sacrificed a living enemy, he could target certain people with a plague that drains vitality as well as health. The best part was that it would only effect those people. The level of the sacrifice/10 determined the number of people he could curse.
