Dive 37: Summoning and Smithing

Short summary of the last chapter:

Spoiler :

Some weird people were planning something that included slavers that recently died. Voice hunted many wolves, that ended up in a fight with all of them. He also built a house and summoned rank 1 Tear, a water elemental.

Also, let me know if anything is wrong with the chapter! Be sure to comment!

The dark figure had spent nearly a day finding and ordering his men to assemble. They had been spread out quite far after all. The slave removed his hood when all were assembled before him. They stood in a dark chapel. It gave off a very gothic(the era not the people) feel. It was one of the oldest temples to Davros that still existed.

As the hood fell from his head, the figure was shown in all of his glory. His most prominent features were his skin and horns. His skin was dark red, as though someone had corrupted all of the blood in his body. On his skin were black inscriptions, very few would be able to tell what they actually meant. It was an old form of magic, that had mostly died out.

His horns looked more like curved drills than anything else. Starting at the top of his forehead, they jutted straight out, then curved upwards. When he lowered his head, they were used in the same way as a rhino might use its horn. The spirals going down the horns helped lead the blood of his enemies to the inscriptions that covered his body.

He growled at the assembled army. “You pathetic worms have been given a great honor for our lord! You will all fight to the death with the one known as Mar’s Chosen! Many of you will die,” A hungry smile intruded upon his face, “but some may not. Failure is not an option! If you stagger, I will consume you! If you falter, I will consume you! If you question I will consume you! If you flee, I will consume you! Now go! Make ready for our departure! You have two hours to be presentable to our lord!”

The army was assembled from many races: demons, dark elves, wood elves, humans, dwarves, even a high elf was present. They all wore differing arms and armors that would be suitable to their respective classes. These fifty men were the single best military unit the demon controlled.

Voice’s POV

I waited impatiently while Elvina completed the ritual circle. She messed up a few times, and had to start over. I was starting to question whether or not it was safe to increase Tear’s rank.

While she worked, I memorized how she created the circle. It was very intricate work. Ancestor was also watching aptly. Never seen a summoning before? I joked. If Ancestor was watching so astutely than something must be different about this summoning.

Ancestor replied seriously. “No, summoning was created to help the other race’s overpower ours. They hid the knowledge greedily. I am very interested in how this works. I wasn’t able to see it in Rand after all.”

Sol seemed unusually quite during the summoning procedure. I guessed it was something like a religious experience to fairies.

For coming to understand more about Fairy Culture, you have gained 5 wisdom.

Aw yeah! More mana regen! I smiled a truly excited smile at the slight increase in my power. Elvina had just finished the circle, and saw me smiling.

She returned it, thinking I was smiling at her. “You have no need to be so excited gosh!” She turned around.

“Voice Inspect shows she had a 62% chance of being embarrassed.” Yeah, I figured that out without it, thanks. I replied flatly. I was obvious she was embarrassed.

I replied to her in an amicable way. “Of course there is! Such a beautiful woman performing such an amazing favor for me! Not only do I get to take in the beauty, I also get to increase my connection to Undine! I will just be happy if she chose to lend Tear more power!” It was a little weird to compliment her beauty, but hey my mom was the most beautiful person on earth. She had turned around so I checked the blue box in the corner of my vision.

For coming to understand the reason summoned fairies increase in power, you have gained 5 wisdom.

Eh? I did what? I just made up some bullshit. I smiled at the fact that the system thought I had figured something out. I didn’t actually realize that fairies took their power from the gods directly. Wait does that mean people can’t summon dark fairies now, because of me? I got no pop up, so I tried again. Does that mean people can’t upgrade dark fairies now, because of me?

For reasoning out the fact that people can no longer upgrade dark fairies, and the reason why, you have gained 2 intelligence.

Elvina had turned around. She shook her self slightly, and spoke. “Alright, Tear you go in the middle of the water drop, and Voice you channel in more magic.”

The summoning circle was now a large white cloud with a single rain drop coming from it. Tear floated in the middle of it. As I poured mana into it, Tear began to glow a sea foam green color. The ball around Tear began grow as it sucked in my slightly purified water mana.

The bubble popped when I had only fed it 950 mana. I assumed that was because my water mana was a bit purer than usual. A single bead of water hit my head. When it did I felt myself convulse and fall to the ground. As I fell I thought to myself. Shit, guess she really did fuck up.

I instantly awoke in a dark body of water. I freaked the fuck out trying to swim to the top, until I remembered my water breathing. Since I had gills I tried sucking in water into them. I felt the weirdest sensation of the skin on my throat flapping. I shivered a little at the uncomfortable feeling. Still I could breathe so I was happy. I noticed that I still had all of my armor and clothes, but not my staff.

I looked around. I saw a giant eyeless jellyfish staring at me. That thing was huge, it was at least seven times bigger than I was. It looked like it could eat me in a sing bite. “SO!” Its voice was deep and booming. It echoed in my mind longer than I wanted. I could even feel the bass of the voice in my body.

(AN* Jelly fish guy talks a bit weird. I am putting how it sounds while it talks)

“You wish to hold my powah!? Then you must PROOOVE yourself to me! Fight! If you live I will grant you my POWAH!”

As soon as the giant jellyfish said that, I noticed several fish surrounding me. I only had time to think Shit before the piranha attacked. The jellyfish seemed to have swam away to watch. The piranha numbered in the hundreds.

I created a wall of earth around myself. If I was sealed they couldn’t attack. Or so I thought. The earth mana would not obey me. Not only was there now earth around me, I couldn’t even call out my own earth orb. Several of the piranha were swimming around me. The only thing I knew about them was they hunted things that thrashed about, and were attracted to the smell of blood. I remained completely still as I adjusted my pain sensor to minimum.

The only mana that seemed to be around me was water mana and fire mana. I could tap into the fire mana, but it was extremely hard. No doubt it was only there to keep the temperature in the water warm while I fought. The piranha seemed to ignore me, that is until The jellyfish created a small tremor in the water. The fish all looked at me. I started making the water mana around me flow outwards. It looked like a sphere of water that was constantly flowing outward.

My heart was beating faster. Even with 1% pain, it would still hurt like hell to get eaten alive. The piranha started swimming against the current I made. Oddly, no matter how much water mana I used to create the repulsion force, my mana didn’t decrease. Neither did the amount of ambient water mana around me.

I made the flows around me faster, and added more force. The piranha seemed to be having trouble getting to me now. They were slowly being pushed back. I smiled as I saw a thin line of hope. Maybe I wouldn’t get eaten after all!

No sooner had I thought that, than another wave came from the jellyfish. This time I started to feel my mana decrease. My mind was becoming frantic, I could keep this up for now, but that wouldn’t last long. I tried to manipulate the fire mana at the same time. Last time I did this ended up in complete failure, but now I had no choice.

I had concentrate on the fire to grab hold of it, but when I did the water current slowed. The piranha would get slightly closer every time I focused my energy on the fire mana. I had a plan, but I need the fire mana to make it work.

The piranha seemed to gain no headway when I pushed them, but neither were they pushed back like I hoped. I started using meditate. I needed to increase the sped the water pushed them at. The only way to do that was use more mana, but I already was close to halfway empty.

Since I could manipulate mana while I meditated I slowly pushed them away. My mana was even coming back faster than I used it! Now before you ask, yes I could have done this while making the house, but I was basically braindead. I didn’t want to keep making the house so I stalled a bit.

Anyway! I meditated for a few minutes, after which I initiated my plan. Loosening my grip on the water mana, I tried holding onto the fire mana. It wasn’t fire but heat, but that was what made me think of this plan.

Holding onto two different types of mana is like trying to look at different objects with each eye. Some people that have trained themselves can do it, but most cannot. I was in the latter group. When I concentrated too hard my meditation even failed. I would have to get back into the zone to increase my mana regen.

I lost track of how long the cycle lasted. I would regen all of my mana while pushing the fish further away. After it was full I would slow the pushing, and try to grab the fire mana. Sometimes I felt like I was about to get it, but by then my mana would be almost depleted. So I had to meditate while pushing the fish further away.

Cycle after cycle continued. At one point I even thought of quitting. If I had let the piranha eat me I would at least get out of that watery prison. I got used to the gills pretty quickly at least. They stopped registering after a few minutes of meditation.

After hundreds of cycles, I finally managed to grab hold of a fire mana stream. I was elated! But I had to let it go to regen my mana again. The jellyfish seemed to think I was too close to winning, so altered the game again.

I mean how the fuck is it just going to do that!? I would have said something to it had I not been fighting for my life!

The piranha started growing in numbers. They increased so much, that they actually began pushing each other to get to me. That might have been beneficial, if they also didn’t push from behind. The extra force caused the piranha to be still when they should have been pushed back. I knew they would come closer if I lessened the mana to the pushing force. Now I had to hold the faster water AND try to grab the fire.

At least my mana was still increasing. I decided to punish my water fairy when this was all over. From context I knew this jellyfish wasn’t my fairy, it had said ‘borrow my power’ not ‘control my power’. I directly controlled the power of my fairies. It wasn’t fair for my squid, but fuck this wasn’t fair for me! Little bastard.

I started the cycle over. I had to use more mana to push them back and hold them, but the cycle was the same. When I pushed them back I lost mana, but when I kept them still I regained it. I lost track of how long I practiced grabbing the fire mana.

After I grabbed the fire mana, I released it immediately. I needed to be able to work with it, but didn’t want the jellyfish to increase the difficulty again. I had figured out that it would increase the difficulty whenever I seemed like I was getting closer than before.

I got the hang of grabbing the two types of mana after only another half hour. It actually made a lot of sense how to do it. I just had to spend a small amount of thought on the water mana, and the bulk of my concentration on the fire mana. To keep in the meditative state I just lowered the amount of control I exerted on my water field.

All I had to do was find the least amount of force to keep the piranha away, while also figuring out the least amount of attention I needed to pay the fire mana to control it. If I made it sound easy that’s because it was… NOT! It was hard as fuck. The only reason I even got it was that I’m leagues ahead of the rest of humanity in terms of pure intellect and computational ability.

As soon as I was satisfied with my grip on the fire mana, I started pushing it outward. The jellyfish again pulsated, but it didn’t matter. This was a do or die situation anyway.

I pushed every single piece of fire mana, that wasn’t touching my body, away with the current. The fire didn’t regenerate. I smiled. The reason I even thought this plan was feasible was that the fire mana didn’t seem to have a ‘core’ like the water mana. The water mana would be constantly produced from any other piece of water mana, but the fire mana wouldn’t.

As the fire mana left the area not around me, the water’s temperature drastically dropped. Chunks of ice started blocking the pathway for the piranha. The less fire mana in the surrounding area, the harder it became to manipulate the water mana. After a few seconds then entire area around me had turned into a solid chunk of ice. The ice was transparent, but the light was refracted off of the edges. I was surrounded by an ice orb that had ripples flowing through it.

Then something I didn’t expect happened. The ice started expanding. The orb that I made was stationary, but the water around it became frigid. The piranha closest to me froze first, after it froze it sent a blast of ice in all directions. As soon as the ice, whether from the piranha or the orb, hit a piranha it exploded. All that was left of the entire group was hundreds of little ice blocks.

It was the single best chain reaction I have ever seen. I couldn’t help but be satisfied with how much overkill was in that one attack. The best part was when the jellyfish thing got hit. A small piece, about half of my body, got froze on it. It screamed in pain. I didn’t even try to hide my smile. Suddenly the jellyfish was covered in ice spikes, each spike covering more of the thing’s body.

The ice slowly froze over the entire body of the jelly. As the ice crept ever closer to the top of the jelly’s head, a thought rang out. “Very well! I will lend you my POWAH!”

With that, I was back in my body, convulsing in a large puddle of water. Elvina was pouring something into my mouth. The taste made me gag. As I coughed up some sort of pink liquid, which might have been diluted blood, I saw the jellyfish right in front of me. Before I had time to freak out, i noticed the small size of it. It was barely bigger than my squid I had just summoned. I looked at my water fairies stats.

The abilities of a fairy are based on the element they are made of. Water fairies start with all stats but agility, vitality, wisdom, and intelligence at 1.

For being a water fairy Tear’s wisdom and intelligence stats equal the user.

For using the maximum amount of mana in the summoning ritual you have maximum intimacy with Tear.

Tear has benefited from the piety of the summoner. Tear has gained 19 luck.

If fairies die while in combat they return to the Ether Realm, and must be summoned. As a higher order of fairy Tear can use all previous forms it has used. All forms will be adjusted to the power of the highest order from.

As Tear bobbed up and down in its water sphere, I felt a ball of rage forming in the pit of my stomach. Tear resembled too closely the giant jellyfish from before. I forced the ball down, and pet Tear.

“Who’s a good king of the jelly fish? You are, yes you are!” I felt the only way to force down my anger was to over compensate with cuteness. I acted like Tear was a kitten or a puppy. Hey even guys like me like fluffy stuff.

I turned to Elvina. “So would you care to tell me what I just experienced? It was not a pleasant thing.”

Elvina looked at me confused. Don’t play dumb bitch. She tilted her head. “Were you, perhaps, not aware of the entire summoning procedure? You have a higher order light fairy so I didn’t think this would be new to you.” She seemed to come to some sort of realization. “OH! You are the chosen of Mar!” I nodded happily. I was seriously starting to get pissed.

She adopted a teacher like pose. “SO! Whenever you upgrade a fairy, you need to pass the Trail of the Elementals. The elementals will give you a task according to how high the order of the fairy you are upgrading is, and what affinity the fairy is. For instance, a second order fire fairy may ask you to sit in flames for a day. Either way you will have to pass that trial in order to acquire a bit of the elemental’s power for your fairy. I’ve never met a God’s Chosen so I didn’t think to tell you. I’m SO sorry!”

The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.

She had a pained look on her face, her shoulders drooped, and she hung her head. As much as I wanted to hate her, I just couldn’t. If my mom made that face, I would have no choice but to beat the person who caused it. I waved it away. “It’s ok, it’s ok. Don’t worry about it. At least I know now.” I gave her a reassuring smile, as I patted her shoulder.

I need to get out of here as soon as possible. I am shit against her secret facial technique.

I gave Elvina a hug as I said my thanks. “Thank for helping me. You didn’t have to, but still went out of your way. Truly you are worthy to be Undine’s chosen.” When I said that she narrowed her eyes. I forgot that she never actually told me she was Undine’s chosen. She seemed to wave it off, which was good since I couldn’t think of a good enough lie quickly.

“Well, I have to go. I promised several of your villagers that I would help them rebuild.” I said as I made the best slightly regretful look I could.

I walked out without giving her the chance to say anything. As I made my way out of the castle, Sol was speaking rapid pace (as always) to Tear. Tear didn’t seem to respond. I interrupted. “Tear, I would like to know a bit about your powers. I need to know how to best utilize you in and out of combat.” Instead of telling me, Tear sent a series of mental images.

I took a moment to digest the images. “So you can create and manipulate water, as well as sense any water nearby and communicate with any creatures that live in the water?” Tear sent an affirmative sensation. “Good, that can be useful.” I didn’t think that the power to manipulate water was as good as healing, but it could still come in handy. I let Sol and Tear communicate while I looked at my Compendium. It had finished compiling the information on all of the books, but I didn’t get any exp from them.

‘Creation of Compendiums’ gave details on how to create compendiums. You had to have a specially enchanted book ‘consume’ several other high quality books. It must have decided my alchemist’s book was high quality enough.

‘Knowledge Creation in Compendiums’ gave several theories about how Compendiums could generate knowledge. All of the theories had one thing in common. Compendiums of higher level could generate information from details in books they consumed. Compendiums could only output this information in black pages that were inserted in them. They would automatically write a ‘notes’ section on all things that was compiled from the books that were a part of the Compendium.

‘Evolutions of Compendiums’ listed many possible ‘evolutions’ a compendium could have. The ‘evolutions’ wholly depended on the types of books it possessed. If for instance the compendium had many books on magic, it would evolve the ability to boost the wielders magic. It might decrease spell cost if it had certain books, or make the spell more powerful if it had others. Diviticus (the author of these three books) even claimed that there was a way to make a compendium sentient, but he had never managed to figure out how. He had created hundreds of compendiums, but never once managed to make it.

There were three rare evolutions mentioned, but Diviticus hadn’t managed to make any of them. One was the sentient version, one had the ability to instantly teach the user any magic that was cast near it, and the last seemed to be able to show the user future events.

I was especially interested in the future events one. I would have to learn a lot about compendiums to make it. I decided to start checking libraries for any resources on compendiums from now on. By the time I had made it to the blacksmith’s I had asked EDI to see if there was a library in this city.

The smithy was surrounded by people in leather armor. They were handing out identical sets to the other villagers. I greeted the blacksmith. “Hello again, Mr. Blacksmith. I’ve come to finish the forge.” He gave me a nod, but otherwise ignored me. At least pay attention to the guy fixing everything for you!

I saw the smithy littered with leather armor. At least he was doing something useful. I got to work fixing the remaining parts of the forge. I had a really good plan for fixing it today.

I was going to use fire mana to heat the iron so it would become more susceptible to change. If lack of fire mana made the water harder to control, then adding fire mana would most likely make it easier to manipulate.

I only needed to concentrate for several seconds to grab both the fire mana in the area around the forge, and the metal mana in the anvil. I quickly realigned all of the iron mana in the anvil. It only took about two hours. That was less than a quarter of the time I had originally set aside for it.

When it was done I heard the familiar ding of a quest complete.

You have completed the blacksmith’s quest. Talk to him for your reward.

You have come to understand how to use multiple types of mana at once. You have reached Mana Mage Level 2. You will find it easier to utilize two forms of mana at once. You have not unlocked the best way to utilize multiple forms of mana at once.

I tried to figure out what the second screen meant. ‘you have not unlocked the best way’ that meant there was at least a few more ways to use multiple mana types at once. What I did was hard enough, it would take a while to figure out any other way to actually use two types at once. Hold up, it said multiple not two. Does that mean I can use even more types of mana at once?

For learning one of the very basics of being a Mana Mage, the VERY basics, you have gained 5 intelligence.

Ps. Should you have really been rewarded for that?

It felt a little weird to be made fun of by the system after such a long time. I was taken out of my reprieve by the blacksmith.

He clapped me on the shoulder as he said his thanks. “Son, I don’t know how to thank you. I don’t have anything to give you. The only thing I have is my trade. I could show you how to use my art if you wanted though.”

The blacksmith gave me an annoying look of hopefulness. I inwardly sighed. I would have liked to refuse him, but there was a crowd of people watching. I smiled graciously. “Of course! Thank you for trusting me not to disgrace your noble trade.” I gave a slight bow. I had Ancestor give me control of Inspect so I could study smithing better.

The people continued to collect the leather armor, while the blacksmith showed me how to create some of it.

“First thing you have to do is picture what you want the finished product to look like. It doesn’t matter if it’s arms or armor, you need to be able to visualize it all. Then you need to pick out the materials.” He went on and on about his trade. It took him an hour before he actually showed me how to make any armor. I made sure to look like a perfect pupil, but honestly I was bored to tears. Tear and Sol were somewhere playing around while I was stuck here listening to this guy.

After teaching me the ‘basics’ of smithing, which was actually crafting of any type of weapon or armor, he showed an actual example.

“Alright, I’m going to craft this leather armor here. I want you to watch and learn how to do it. You will need to figure out other weapons and armor yourself. You could always apprentice yourself to a blacksmith in order to learn, but that would take quite a few years. And most people don’t take apprentices that are so old.” He shrugged as he started crafting.

I paid attention to this part. I had once been interested in learning how to make my own weapons and armor, it still held some fascination to me.

The process wasn’t overly hard. He cut the leather into the correct pieces, and banded them together. There was only a few large pieces, and many long thing pieces. After that he just did some minor lacing with the remaining leather.

While he examined his work, I looked over my new notifications.

You have learned a new smithing recipe: Wolf Leather Armor (Demon Variant).

You learned the Smithing Skill.

“Inspect: Smithing.”

Smithing

Current Level: Novice Level 1 Exp 0.00%

An Expert blacksmith has taught you this skill.

Each level in this skill improves the quality of the arms and armor you create. For every rank you increase this skill you will be able use more advanced material in smithing.

To level this skill you must smith weapons or armor. Crafting the same thing, at the same quality, will give diminishing returns in experience.

Can be currently fused with the skill ‘Dissection’.

Crafting skills can be fused together with higher levels of skill fusions.

I obviously fused them.

Deconstruct

Current Level: Novice Level 1 Exp 0.00%

Deconstruct allows the user to break down any non-enchanted item.

When you deconstruct any item you will gain a small amount of understanding about it.

Each level in this skill improves the amount of knowledge you gain from deconstructing an item. Every rank in this skill allows you to deconstruct more complicated items.

To level this skill you must deconstruct items, or learn about the manufacturing of the items.

Every 5 levels of this skill improves the quality of items you have deconstructed by 1%.

For every 10% of an item you fully understand by deconstructing an item you gain 5% quality bonus. Once you have completely deconstructed a type of item, you gain 100% quality bonus.

Using Breakdown on an item destroys it.

You have learned all of the required skills to obtain the Group Skill: Breakdown. Would you like to exchange relevant skills for the Group Skill: Breakdown? You can choose to fuse them at a later time. At that time say exchange relevant skills.

Yes.

You have exchanged all relevant skills for the Group Skill: Breakdown. All relevant skills have been taken from your skill list. The total accumulated experience has been added to the Group Skill: Breakdown. The total level requirements have all been added to the Group Skill: Breakdown.

As you level this skill all parts of it will level up. For instance if dissect enough creatures to level up, you will gain the benefits the other skills would have provided at that level. This skill takes more exp to level up to level two than all of the skills that make it up would.

“Inspect: Breakdown.”

Breakdown

Current Level: Novice Level 4 Exp 60.00%

This skill allows you to use the benefits from: Dissection, Auto-Dissection, and Deconstruct.

To level this skill you must do an action that would be encompassed in one of the skills that were consumed to make this skill.

After reading my windows the blacksmith came up to me. “Now it’s your turn. Show me what you learned.” He handed me several pieces of wolf leather. It was more than he had used, no doubt to compensate for any mistakes I might make.

One of the best features of my Inspect skill was the fact that it aided me in the creation process of items. I saw the tell-tale red lines when I started using Smithing on the leather. I sewed where inspect told me to, and stich where it told me to. All in all it was basically Inspect using my hands to create the gear. It took about three times as long as the blacksmith, and I did use a bit more material since I messed up twice. The results were decent for my first time. I looked at the blacksmith’s armor versus the one I made.

Demon Wolf Leather ArmorMaterial QualityLowWork QualityExpertDefense15Durability35/35Weight5 lbsThis item provides minor defense augmentation.

This armor was made by an expert craftsman. The quality of this work benefits greatly from the level of the craftsman. This item has gained 5 defense and 15 maximum durability.

Demon Wolf Leather ArmorMaterial QualityLowWork QualityNoviceDefense10Durability25/25Weight5 lbsThis item provides minor defense augmentation.

This armor was made by a novice craftsman. The quality of this work slightly exceeds the level of the craftsman. This item has gained 5 maximum durability.

He looked the armor over. “Hm, not bad, not bad at all. You actually did pretty well for your first time. I expected the work to be shoddy at best.” Seeing my slightly offended (fake) look he replied, “Don’t take offense. I’ve rarely heard of someone actually able to create something usable for their first item.”

A slightly smug looked escaped my vigilance. I knew it was thanks to my Inspect skill, but I still did better than most other first timers. I even made a group skill! It was a pretty exciting day so far. EDI was still helping make houses, so I decided to try to find some sort of place to mine. I was going to get the blacksmith some iron ore to make weapons. It was only about one or two in the afternoon, so I could still get a lot done today if I hurried. I thanked the blacksmith as I went to figure out a way to find the iron ore.
