Chapter 8 Memories, Regrets and Longing part 1
“She is still looking for that ring.”
“It’s been such a long time since it got lost; there is no way to find it now.”
“But she doesn’t have much time left; it meant so much to her… if just there was a way to find it…”
My ears moved in curiosity as I listened to the two people talking as they left a house on the other side of the alley.
I looked at the house’s upper floor window; it had a well-kept flower box attached to it, where plants that looked like herbs grew. Through the window, I could see a bed with an old woman sitting on it, reading a letter.
“Or rather, staring at it, no…, longing sounds more accurate.”
“Hmm…”
I looked down the street, measuring the distance between the window and me.
“Should be fine.”
I took a few steps back, then started running, followed by a leap and a perfect landing on the edge of the flower box. “I give that a 10 out of 10!”
Thanks to my quiet landing, she hadn’t noticed me yet, so I tapped with my paw against the closed window and meowed.
She looked up in surprise as she saw me wagging my tail and eyes, which screamed, “Let me in.”

The old lady got up and opened the window, “What a pleasant surprise, I didn’t expect such an adorable cat to visit me.” Her voice had a soothing tone to it.
I excitedly sprung inside the room; it was decorated with more herbs and books about herbology. Not that I know much about this stuff, though…
The old lady observed me as I looked over the interior of her room and went back to her bed.
As I was done, I looked at her…
“I’m sorry for the lack of hospitality; if I could still move around a bit more, I would have offered you my special herbal tea.”
I could clearly see that she didn’t have much time left.
I hopped on the bad next to her. “Its fine. Even though I would like to taste it, I’m here for a different matter.” I replied in a calm voice.
“And what would that be?”
“Hmm, you are pretty unsurprised by me talking.”
The old lady laughed softly, “You are not the first spirit I have met.”
I looked at her intrigued, “Really? That’s rare.”
She continued, “Back when I was younger, I used to regularly go into the forest to study plants, until one day a forest spirit started talking to me; they seemed to be curious about what I was doing,” she laughed, as if recalling something funny.
I tilted my head, “What is it?”
“After I explained to them what I was doing, they thanked me for satisfying their curiosity and went their way; I never even saw what they looked like.”
“Hmm, what’s so funny about that?”
“It just reminded me of the unpredictable nature of spirits, not that that is a bad thing… I envied them; if they felt like it, they could go wherever they wanted. Following every whim…” I could hear deep regret in her voice…
“But it’s too late for me now…” she looked at the pile of letters next to her, lying on the nightstand.
“Has that something to do with that ring?” I asked her expressionless.
“How do you know about that?” she looked at me in surprise.
“I eavesdropped on the two humans leaving earlier.”
“Is that so…, these two are my grandchildren; they always worry so much, even though I never told them why this ring is so important to me, they tried their best at finding it. But it’s hopeless…”
She let out a sad sigh.
“That’s why I’m here; I will find it for you!” I said, filled with determination.
The old lady looked at me surprised “Why would you do that?”
“Because I feel like it!” my tail wagged as I looked at her, who started laughing “Is that so, then I will gladly accept your help.”
