Chapter 28 The Chaotic Duo Part 2
“Benedikt, oh my god!” A woman screamed from the bakery’s kitchen. Curious about what had happened, Fay and I quickly ran over.
In the kitchen, a man sat on the floor, holding his hand to the back of his head in pain, and a woman kneeled next to him, inspecting his wounds.
*Bam*
The door on the other end of the kitchen slammed open, and four humans rushed in. “Ms. Schleckermaul, Mr. Schleckermaul, what happened!?”
“Robin, go get the guards. Anthon, quickly get the first aid kit; Lea, get the doctor; and Daniel, help me lift up Benedikt!” The woman quickly gave out precise orders, and three of the four ran off, while the last one brought a chair for the wounded man to sit on.
Fay and I decided to quietly keep watching.
After a while, the guards and a doctor came, making it quite cramped and noisy inside the relatively small bakery café.
After the man was patched up and the doctor left, the guards began to question him what exactly happened.
“I wanted to prepare the dough for tomorrow’s pastries, but then someone hit me from behind. I lost consciousness- Wait!” He sprung up with a shocked expression.
“Benedikt what’s the matter? The doctor said you shouldn’t move rashly.” The woman supported him so he didn’t stumble, and they walked to one of the kitchen counters, baking material lay scattered over it.
“It’s gone! It’s gone!” He searched frantically.
“Ben, talk to me. What is gone exactly?”
“The secret recipe, it’s gone! It got stolen!” His knees gave out from the shock and slumped to the ground.
The woman and the four employees faces turned as shocked as the mans.
“Hmm~” Fay and I continued to watch.
“Oh god, what should we do now?! If it gets into the hands of our competition, we are done for!”
Panic broke out, but the guards quickly settled it, mentioning something interesting in the process. “Please calm down; we have had multiple theft cases similar to this one and are already investigating. Now, we would like to talk to everyone individually for their testimonies.”
“Hehehe, Fay- No, Dr. Hatson, we got a new case! Follow me!” I enthusiastically followed the guard.
“Wait, Nox, what’s up with this getup?” Fay flew after me.
A case of literary theft: this tale is not rightfully on Amazon; if you see it, report the violation.
“For this investigation, you shall address me as Mr. Wolmes, Jerlock Wolmes!” I said confidently, clad in my deerstalker hat and inverness cape.
Fay looked at me confused as I put a fake moustache on her face and gave her a small cane. “You are now my assistant! Just play along!”
“Alright! Mr. Womes!” She excitedly flew around me.

The backer’s assistant Lea’s testimony:
“I was the whole break upstairs with the others.”
“If someone left the break room? I went shortly to the restroom, b-but that was long before Mr. Schleckermaul got attacked!”
“Please, you have to find the thief; the secret recipe is essential for us!”
The receptionist Daniel’s testimony:
“I? I was like all other employees in the break-room; well, before Mr. Schleckermaul left, Lea went out for quite some time.”
He leaned forward. “Just between us, but she would definitely be capable of stealing the recipe. She always pestered Mr. Schleckermaul to show it to her, and I heard her dream is it to open her own café. I bet she did it!”
“Oh, so Lea did it!” Fay said convinced.
“Mr. Hatson, don’t jump hastily to conclusions yet.” I said in a posh voice.
“Aye aye, sir!”
Assistant manager Robin’s testimony:
“Lea went out for a bit, but not long, and she was long back before Mr. Schleckermaul left.”
“That’s correct; we four employees shortly ran downstairs after Ms. Schleckermaul left because we heard her scream.”
“I don’t think anyone of us would do something like that; as far as I know, everyone loves to work here. But I noticed something strange while Mr. Schleckermaul got treated by the doctor; on one of the tables near the window were leftovers from our pastries. I wonder if Anthon forgot to clean it up?”
“Ups… I couldn’t finish because we heard the scream…” I averted my gaze.
Waiter Anthon’s testimony:
“Leftovers on a table? That can’t be; I cleaned everything before break; don’t tell me the thief ate before attacking Mr. Schleckermaul; maybe they even waited there for him to come down! After all, the kitchen and the front of the café are divided by a wall; the thief probably entered from the front of the café and waited behind the door to ambush Mr. Schleckermaul as soon as he revealed the recipe!”
“This can’t be though! We would have seen it if a thief had lurked there! We were there the whole time after all!” Fay exclaimed proudly.
“Hmm…”
Manager Ms. Schleckermaul’s testimony:
“I went downstairs because I forgot to discuss something important with Benedikt; normally I would never interrupt him while he prepares the dough; after all, even to me, he has never revealed the contents of the secret recipe.” She let out a sigh. “And then I found him… lying unconscious on the ground… Luckily, I went to him… Who knows what might have happened if I hadn’t…”
“I don’t know if it’s of any help, but as I went down, I heard the back door closing. Shortly after I found Benedikt, I forgot about it due to the shock… Do you think that was the culprit fleeing?!”
“Please apprehend them as fast as possible; they can’t get away with hurting Ben!”
I nodded as I held my pipe in my paws. “I see, I see. I understand everything now!”
Fay looked at me surprised. “What?! You know who the culprit is, Mr. Womes?”
“No, I don’t! But that is of no concern. My dear Mr. Hatson, you still have a lot to learn, don’t you see it?” I said overdramatically, smoking my pipe.
“What should I see?” Fay flew around in confusion.
“The truth! After all, only one truth prevails!” I said, standing up, striking a majestic pose.
*clap*
“I still don’t understand, but you are awesome, Nox!”
“Now,” I elegantly hopped down and turned to Fay dramatically, “We shall reveal the truth! Follow me, Dr. Hatson!”
Fay answered excitedly, swinging her cane. “Of course, Mr. Wolmes. Let’s show the humans your brilliance!”
