Chapter 14 Nooo, my food! Part 3

“I don’t want to anymore…” I was lying on my stomach, all legs stretched away from me, my head on the warm stone that belonged to a roof.

“Is food really worth the effort…?” As I was melting into the ground, contemplating my life choices, the sun was about to go down…

I spent the whole day looking for restaurants that had no mice problem… “I asked the assistant if they had checked it yet, but they did not, because their priority was to find the missing children… sigh… so I did it instead…”

“If my theory is right, then-“ The door of the restaurant opened, and the owner came out. He looked nervously around before locking the door and hurriedly leaving.

I got up and followed him.

He often checked his surroundings, if someone was following him. Of course, he didn’t saw me hiding on the roofs.

“Hmm, now I only need a fancy hood covering my face and a hidden blade… I’m sure I would be good at this!” I wagged my tail at the thought.

“W-Who is there?!” the man said in a shaky voice.

“Ups… He saw my tail…”

The man looked up to me, who was hiding…

“Meow?” I came out of the shadows, revealing myself.

“Tsk, it’s just a cat!” The man said angrily, but seemingly relived and resumed his walk.

“Hmm, plus I have the best disguise; who would suspect such a cute looking cat~”

After following him for a while, he went into an overgrown underground passage hidden under an abandoned building. “Another way underground… Hopefully this one doesn’t stink.”

I made my way through the greenery and came out into a dark cold underground passageway, and followed the flickering flame of the torch that the man was holding.

*Boohoo*

*Sob sob*

“Shut up! No one will hear you anyway!” The man shouted, kicking against the steel bars.

*Clunk*

*Waah*

“Shit! Why did this happen? This wasn’t what I had planned!” The man looked agitated and stared down at a whistle he was holding in his hand.

I observed the scene hiding behind a corner. Five children cried their eyes out, locked in an old underground prison, while the man was cursing.

“This whistle he is holding is a magic item! How did he get something like this?” As I was deep in thought, the man's cursing changed into mumbling…

“Will my wish really come true? Y-You promised me…!” It was as if he was talking to someone, or more like he was talking to the whistle…

“Did he go nuts?” I thought and decided to observe this bizarre sight a bit longer.

“My…my wish, fulfill it!”

“Wish…”

“My…”

As the man succumbed more and more to madness, a black shadow began to cover him, starting from his hands making its way all over his body and clothes.

“The shadow is coming out of this whistle…; is it a magic item that gains control over its owner…?”

The man, now turned shadow came into my direction. “It’s time to end this farce.”

I sprung out as he was about to turn around the corner and snatched the damn thing out of his hand.

“Ugh…”

A disgusting stream of madness attempted to cloud my mind, to take control over me; out of reflex I let go of it.

*Clink*

The small metallic whistle, engraved with mysterious symbols, fell to the ground and rolled deeper into the dark prison.

The man, now reverted back to its former appearance, looked at me with insanity blazing in his eyes. “My whistle! Give it back! I need it back!” He screamed in a distorted voice while he ran after the thing.

I let him pass me and calmly turned around.

*Crack*

In an instant the air turned cold and from under my paw, crystal like structures formed a path enclosing the man’s lower body. A few centimeters from his stretched-out hand away lay the whistle, exuding a dark aura.

“L-Let me go! I need…”

“My wish…, without it…”

“Pathetic.” I said in an annoyed tone as I watched him squirm like a bug; a futile attempt to escape my ice.

The man stared at me with his madness consumed eyes and started to scream in rage,

“YoU dOn’T KnOw aNYthiNg wHat I wEnT thRouGh!”

“He is a lost cause…”

“My BuSinEss wAS aBoUt tO Go dOWn!”

“Sigh… He is annoying.”

“I HAd To dO SoMEthiNg!”

“…”

“I hAD nO oThEr cHoiCe!”

“Yeah, I have no interest in your tear-jerking backstory.”

*Thud*

The ice around him formed a sharp stake, pricing through his chest into his heart.

I exhaled in relief. “Finally, some peace and quiet.”

My gaze wandered to the eerie whistle, and I quickly froze it solid. “I could take this thing with me; who knows what will happen if someone gets their hands on it…”

“On the other hand, if I do take it, the guild people might not figure out what exactly caused all this…”

“So, this is the best solution…” The ice I froze it in is special; it doesn’t melt.

“Well, it could melt, but you would need the flames of a spirit that is as powerful as me; good luck finding one.”

After that was taken care of, I wandered in deeper to the imprisoned children, who were still crying.

*Mommy, hic…*

I went in between the bars and looked at them,

“Wow!”

“What is this?”

The children looked in astonishment at the ground that was covered in flowers made out of ice.

“Of course, it’s ice that doesn’t emit cold.” I thought to myself and then said, “Someone will come soon to get you out of here.”

“The kitty is talking!”

“A talking kitty!”

*sigh*

I quickly left.

As I was finally out of the underground and took in a deep breath of fresh air, I heard footsteps quickly coming closer and quiet a few at that.

I jumped on a nearby building and observed how the adventurers raided the abandoned building and with it the underground prison.

“Seems like I don’t have to find Miss Assistant anymore…” I scratched my ear.

“…”

“Was I even needed here…?” I thought in frustration.

“Whatever I will get my food!” With determination I ran into the night.
