Chapter 27 The Chaotic Duo Part 1
The cat’s eyes sparkled with excitement while droll escaped their mouth.
“Oh, my!” The elderly woman observed the cat, “What an adorable cat you have there, mister~” She held the cat a skewer in front of their eyes.
“Nox, don’t trouble the innkeeper-” The young elf, covered in a hood, said with a troubled expression.
“Oh, it’s no trouble at all.” She let go of it as the cat hastily snatched the food away and jumped down the counter, with the skewer in mouth, swiftly running back upstairs.

“Mmm~ so goood~” I laid on my back, munching the tasty food, my tail wagged in satisfaction after eating something in so long. “Nothing goes over free food~”
*clack*
The door opened, and the elf and Fay came in. “Nox, if you are eating, then don’t do it on the bed…” He looked at me worrisome…
I stared at him innocently before continuing to enjoy my meal as if he had never said anything.
He shook his head in defeat, “Fay, I never heard that spirits need to consume food…”
She looked at him, thinking for a moment. “We don’t need to; Nox is the only one I have ever seen eating. They are an oddball!” She said with a stern expression, whereupon both of us made an expression that very much meant “as if you are one to talk!” but she just stared at us filled with pure ignorance…
“Anyway,” He looked back at me as I was gnawing off the last bits of meat. “you just ate three whole plates, aren’t you full?”
“Mmm, my stomach is like a bottomless pit; I could eat for all eternity if I wanted to~” I started rolling around on the bed, playing with the now-food-free wooden stick.
After a small sigh, the elf changed the topic, “In any case, we are now close to the forest, but we should be careful; we are in the kingdom of Aufrichtig after all.”
“Huh?” Fay looked at him with question marks.
The elf sighed again and covered his face with his hand as if despairing, “Fay… how many times have I already explained to you…”
She looked at him with big eyes, bluntly and full of confidence saying: “I’m sorry, I never listened to it.”
“…”
“… I thought so…” The elf not in the slightest surprised.
“Seems like they know each other well.” I thought still playing with the stick, creating different shapes out of ice on it. “Now I’m craving popsicles… Slush ice…” My mouth watered the more I thought about it. “Maybe after all is taken care of, I should try my paws on making my own ice.” I purred in anticipation.

“Then let me explain one last time; please listen closely… Fay… Hey!”
Fay, intrigued, stared at my ice prototypes before looking back at the elf. “I’m listening, for real this time!” She looked at him with flames of motivation blazing in her eyes.
“…Fine, to make it short, the kingdom of Aufrichtig is one of the few countries were most of the population is human and the belief in human supremacy is high. It would be troublesome if they found out about us, so we shouldn’t stay any longer than necessary.”
“Oh, so that’s why you cover your head! To hide your ears! I’m such a genius and a good listener to boot!~” She declared, posing proudly with her hands on her hips.
“Sigh…” The elf sat down on the second bad, “I will rest for a while; please don’t do anything reckless, you two.” He tiredly laid down and fell asleep immediately.
“Wow, he must’ve been pretty fatigued.” I said as Fay flew over to him and made sure he was fully in the land of dreams.
“Nox,” She looked at me excitedly, “the sun is still up, so-”
I looked back at her mischievously, and we said at the same time, “Let’s explore!”
***
The city was relatively big and lively, located near the borders of the forest and the country that we were previously in… “What was the name again?”
“Hey, Nox, look-look! What is that? I can see myself!” Fay pointed with her small finger at a shop window.
“It’s called glass.” I answered her while I casually walked along the street, “This architecture looks similar to European buildings, the ones you see in every fantasy setting…”
I looked up the buildings, which neat and closely stood next to each other on both sides of the wide street; now and then a carriage passing by people. “Nothing much has changed; it’s so busy, but I haven’t seen any other races.”
*Bump*
My train of thoughts got interrupted, and I looked back at Fay, who stuck face first to the window, slowly sliding it down.
“…”
“Fay…” I walked closer to the miserably small spirit, “Are you a bird now?”
She angrily flew away from the store window, “What is this magic!? Why can’t I touch the shiny stones inside!?” She huffed and puffed. “Then I will do this the hard way!”
I could see that she was getting ready to break the glass with her powers, but before that, I jumped up and caught her with my mouth. “No need to destroy it.” I calmly walked to the shop’s door with an enraged Fay struggling to break free.
Right at the moment, as a customer opened the door, I quickly hushed in and hopped on one of the display counters, letting Fay go. “Wow!” Having forgotten her anger, she quickly flew to the jewelry, “Nox, look how big this one is!” She happily hugged a green stone that was almost the size of her body.
I laid down and observed her playing with the costly-looking jewels, “Not that money matters to a spirit.”
“Did that necklace just move on its own!?” an employee whispered to another…
“Good thing I decided to make myself invisible this time; otherwise, they would have thrown me out thinking I was a cat…” Out of boredom, I started to play with some gems as well.

After Fay satisfied her need to play with the jewelry and, in the process, spooked the customers and employees into thinking they had a ghost in the store, we browsed through countless other stores in the same fashion.
“Hmm~ this tastes heavenly~” I munched on a cake, which was definitely not stolen, while sitting with Fay on a table. The staff was on break, so I seized the chance— I mean, I graciously took it upon myself to taste test their pastries.
“Why do you like this weird stuff so much?” Fay asked me, around her neck dangled her new necklace, which was in actuality a ring adorned with a tasteless amount of jewels. After all, they don’t take custom orders from spirits… or do they…?
“Why do you like these weird stones?” I asked her back while digging into the next sweet delicacy.
She looked at me with big eyes, thinking about how to answer-
“AHHH!”
A loud scream interrupted our tranquil conversation.
