Chapter 13 Nooo, my food! Part 2

As I walked into the building, the hectic adventurers ran through it like a colony of bees that received their orders from their queen.

In the distance, the guild master and her assistant talking to others, “Any news from one of the search parties?”

“They haven’t found anything yet.”

“Damn it!” The guild master cursed in frustration. “We have to find them fast!”

“But we have not many leads.” A man replied.

I joined their conversation and asked the assistant, “What’s with all the commotion? Has it something to do with the rodent problem?”

The assistant replied in a hurry, “Didn’t you get informed?! It got way worse; now children have vanished! And according to eyewitness accounts they followed something together with the mice and rats.”

“Veronica, to whom are you talking to?” one of the people asked.

“Huh?” She turned around and saw me.

“Meow!”

“Oh, it’s the cat. What are you doing here? If you hoped for snacks, Will is busy right now.” The guild master replied before turning around again as someone called for her.

As the assistant was about to follow her, I wrapped my forelegs around one of her feet, “Wait!”

“Wha-? The voice again?!” she looked in surprise.

I looked at her annoyed and impatient, “I don’t have time for this. Quickly tell me all the information you have.”

She looked down at me, “Are you really talking? So that last time wasn’t my imagination?”

I tilted my head, wondering what she was talking about. “Yes, as you can see, I can talk. So, tell me what you know.”

I sigh in my mind, “Usually I don’t like talking to people; it’s too troublesome…”

“Do you see this, calm man!? To what lengths I go to help! After this is over, I expect a feast with all my favorite foods!” I screamed in my mind.

“Wait a moment.” She said before running over to the guild master, telling her something, and then ran back to me…

“Let’s go to a quieter place.” She picked me up and went out of the building into a back alley.

“What did you tell the guild master?” I looked up at her wondering.

“Just that I would bring you outside so no one falls over you.” she put me down on a wooden box.

I gave her a look of dissatisfaction…

“What? I had to come up with an excuse. I doubt people would think I’m sane talking to a cat… and I’m sure you also want to keep the fact that you are a spirit and not a cat a secret.”

“Hmm, what makes you think I’m a spirit?”

“Anyone with a bit of knowledge about spirits would know that if an animal talks, it’s most likely a spirit in disguise.” She whispered so as not to attract attention.

“But you never noticed until now…” I looked at her pitiful.

“T-The last time I thought I was simply overworked and too stressed… I never expected to meet an actual spirit!” in a hastened voice, she tried to defend herself… What made me look even more pitiful at her.

“Could you please stop giving me that look! Didn’t you come here for information?”

“Right, so can you tell me what’s going on in detail?”

After that, a lengthy explanation followed. To summarize:

Over the last few weeks, more and more mice and rats have been sighted, especially near restaurants. And last night, several children vanished out of their beds.

As the guild started investigating, they quickly found someone who said they had seen them wandering off together with the rodents. They and multiple other people claimed to have heard at night whistling sounds as well…

“This is more bothersome than I thought…” I scratched my ear discontented.

“So, why do you want to know all this?” Miss Assistant asked, throwing me out of my thoughts.

“Because I’m going to solve this nuisance and get my food!” I jumped down and went my way, not looking back.

“I’m exhausted from talking so much… After this is done, I need a month of doing nothing, or better, a year or ten!” I thought while walking over the roofs.
