Chapter 7: Free Bird

Chapter 7: Free Bird

I wish I could tell you that the plane flight was exciting, but it really wasn't. The take-off was okay, and it felt somewhat weird. I enjoyed looking at the nearby city as we ascended into the sky, but then we crossed some clouds which blocked everything from sight! Dam clouds!

From that moment on, nothing really happened; we flew in the same direction for a long time as we just sat there trying to cure our boredom. Anton and Ivan cured their boredom with their cellphones, but I didn't have such luxury, so I resorted to bothering the pilot in the cockpit.

"So, are we there yet?" I asked impatiently as I scanned the cockpit and all the buttons in there.

"I already told you we still have an hour and a half left to go." The pilot answered as he tried to shake me off. He considered me annoying! How dare he! I'm one in a trillion, you lucky bastard. You should be in awe!

"Can I ask you something else?" The guy put his palm on his face as he said, "Go ahead."

"Do you like your job?" I asked without thinking much of it, but he quickly looked at me and got a little angry.

"I do, but nowadays, this profession is a rarity. I have never actually flown a small plane without machines around me."

His expression soon shifted from annoyed to genuine anger as he looked away. I could somewhat understand what he meant. Humans like independence, I know that much, so it is probably troublesome for machines to automate everything humans would want to do.

I didn't think of what someone like him might feel about me in that sense. Am I a replacement? Am I meant to replace humans? That's what this pilot must've been thinking as I ignorantly asked about a sensitive topic. I felt guilt again, which made me want to mend things with him.

"I'm sorry I asked. I didn't consider your feelings. I'm sorry." The man sighed as he cleaned his eyes from small tears, trying to act like it had never happened.

Soon, some static sounded from within the plane's radio as cut-off voices tried to speak with us. The pilot soon took the intercom device and began calling back at the frequency, but it was all met with silence. Then, an alarm went off inside the cockpit as a robotic voice screamed, "PULL UP! PULL UP! PULL UP!"

I scanned the air before us as the plane pilot took a better look at the alarm, and then we both realized! Shit! There is another plane heading straight for us! The pilot soon grabbed the elevation leaver and pulled it as hard as he could as we quickly approached the other plane, which was about to crash with us head-on!

The jet shook as we ascended, but it was too late. Seconds later, we both heard and felt the impact of the jet tail hitting the cargo plane. The pilot struggled with the steering column, so I quickly jumped to help him stabilize it, but it was highly jammed, and I couldn't move it.

A ton of alarms sounded inside the cockpit as I looked down at the other plane, which had a massive hole in the middle and was missing part of a wing. Anton quickly came into the cockpit, now wearing a backpack.

"We have to get off the plane, come with us, droid girl! I need you to hug me tight!" Anton said as he threw another backpack at the pilot, who quickly put it on. The pressure in the cabin was quickly changing.

We soon exited the cockpit and reached the emergency exit, where Ivan struggled against the lock. He couldn't open the door as the lock prevented him from doing so. I eventually removed it since I was far stronger than any human.

Yet since I was the one to remove the door, that meant that the air sucked me outside first, then everyone else, and news flash! I didn't have a parachute! AHHHHHHHH!!!

The only lovable thing about it was the comedy relief of the action, as it looked like one of those ancient cartoons where everything seemed fine for a few seconds until you realized you messed up! I was pulled out so comically I had to get a little laugh even if I was about to die from fall damage.

I was soon caught in free fall as my entire body alarmed me of my impending doom as if I didn't know it! I know I'll become metal soup if I touch the ground, you idiot! I said as I turned around to look at everyone else jumping out of the plane just seconds before the entire jet blew up mid-air.

My worries were quelled a little once I realized everyone from the jet appeared to be okay and wearing chutes, but what happened to the other plane we just crashed with? I looked at the sky mid-free fall and saw how the cargo plane also dramatically descended in a cloud of smoke and fire.

I was falling at a slower rate than usual now, so fortunately for me, Anton was able to catch up to me by making his body more efficient against the air. He soon hugged me and began to talk to me.

"Alright, droid girl, we have to fall a little more before we pull; you okay?"

"Yeah, but the people from the other plane! They will die! I don't want anyone to die!" I said as he watched the other plane near us, death spiraling out of control.

"You can fly, but I'm not sure you should risk your own life for them, A52." He said. Wait a minute, what did he just say? "You can fly." I can? Since when? How don't I know it?

[Information and systems locked password required for access]

Oh, it's you! Evil voice in my head! "Give me the password if you know it, Anton! I need to save them!"

"I can't do it, droid girl! They're not worth as much as you let them die!" He said as I raged at his statement. I didn't want to be the hero, but if I could do something to save lives, I would do so! Screw you, Anton! I'm going in! If I can fly, then why not use my power to help!

My central core soon blocked the outside noise as I ordered my quantum chip to crack the password blockage. When I looked at Anton, I saw how angry he was after I pushed away from him with all my might. My music player soon began to play a thematic track.

{And this bird you cannot change! Ohohoh! And the bird, you cannot change! Lord knows I can't change. Lord help me; I can't change IEEEeehehe.}

My processor coon tried billions of combinations in a couple of seconds as I dived faster and faster to catch up with the cargo plane until I heard the combination unlocked right as the beat drop happened! Perfectly timed!

[Acess unlocked activating propulsors]

"Free bird, yeah!"

My speed almost tripled as the entire system pushed me forward with so much trust that I couldn't even correctly stop before missing the plane, forcing me to do a loop around. I couldn't describe the feeling of lying in any other way but say it like I felt it.

"It's fucking awesome!"
