Chapter 3: Balls!

Chapter 3: Balls!

So, I'm a self-aware AI, right? So that means I'm cool, right? I wonder if I can move from the workstation that seems to be holding my body in the air. Uhmm, the man I spoke to earlier seemed like a nice guy, but I don't know what to do! I'm so bored. Wait, why am I bored?

Uhm! Time to ask my installed dictionary! Boring! Definition, please!

[Bored. Adjective - wearied by dullness or sameness]

Dullness? What the hell is that? Uhmm again! Dictionary search for dullness! Definition, please!

[Dullness noun - Lack of interest.]

I see. Then, yeah, if lacking interest is what boredom is, then I'm bored! I need to do something. I can't be still for who knows how long! I want to do something! Uhg! Please tell me I can move this body; okay, let's try. A worst-case scenario would be me falling over and breaking. No, I'll be okay.

Come on, body move! I order thee! Moveeeee! AHHHHHH! I try to make my body move, but it doesn't respond until I finally wiggle my right hand free from its hold. Oh, there we go. I got my hand free. Woah! My body is so strange. It's like it is made out of a gelatinous substance or something.

Soon, I tried doing the same thing with my left hand, but as you might have expected, I fell face-first into the floor when I wiggled my left arm. Apparently, I was still stupid, no matter how high my specs were. OUCH!

So this feeling coming from my face is pain? I don't like it. I got my hands free, now what? My legs? How do I remove these things from my ankles? I examine the device more carefully until I notice a button on the side; when I press it, my ankles become free.

Oh, so simple and easy. Now that I'm freed up, what do I do? Should I run for it? Oh, what's that? That round thing over in that table! What is that? I try taking my first steps toward the shiny round thing at a table nearby, but I fall over a couple of times on my way there. Walking on two legs was way more challenging than I had anticipated.

When I finally get to the shiny round thing, I realize my system already tells me what is at the corner of my vision. It said "Ball." What does one do with these "Balls?" Tell me! Mysterious encyclopedia in my head!

This narrative has been unlawfully taken from Royal Road. If you see it on Amazon, please report it.

[Most humans use balls to play with them. Some people play with the balls using their hands, some use their legs, and others use external objects to push the ball toward another target or place. Here are several examples. {Images of kids playing soccer/baseball/dodgeball.}]

Uh? What's so fun about a little round thing? I ask as I pick up the object, which is about the size of my hand. When I have it in my hand, I throw it against the floor like I saw in some basketball images, but when I do, the ball comes flying back at my face, knocking me over.

"Ugh! I think it's a little softer than that. I didn't expect it to be so bouncy."

The security guard on duty was probably laughing his ass off, watching me, but I don't care. I want to learn how to do this properly. As soon as I stand up and pick up the ball again, I recalibrate my systems to bounce the ball just high enough to catch it when it comes back up, and to my surprise, it works!

[Achievement! A52 has discovered a new skill! "Human automatic trajectory calculator."]

So, all humans are born with this information already in them? They're amazing. It took me several tries. Wait what? No, I did it second try! I would never lie to you! Trust me! I didn't just hide my failures and made a cut right when I finally got it! I would never do that. Please believe me!

[Liar.]

Oh, shut up, mysterious voice in my head. Who are you, by the way? {Silence, Silence, silence.} Oh, so now you're quiet! You won't shut up the entire chapter, but the voice is suddenly gone as soon as I indulge about you! How convenient!

Anyway, I can see why people find this fun. I already know the possible trajectories, but I want to keep bouncing this ball repeatedly, and oh my god, an entire hour and a half went by. WHAT?! I'm an advanced machine. How did I lose track of time? Is this what being human feels like?

Uhm! I wonder if I can leave this room without getting into trouble. Should I do it? Or can I wait until the dawn? Should I go outside? I think until I finally choose to open the door to explore the outside world, and when I do, armed guards shoot me down and kill me on the spot!

{Angelic A52 chorus voice making the classic Aaaahh! Dead chorus song as their spirit ascends to heaven.}

[THE END?]

[Thank you for enjoying this show's short run. Android 52.]

{Ahhhhhh!!!} No, what am I thinking! I don't know what awaits me on the other side of that door! I don't want to risk it and become droid soup embedded with bullets! I want to stay alive as long as possible! Clean cache, please, mysterious system voice! I want to remove that image from my mind.

Once the voice is over with the data deletion, I go back to play around with the ball and then with some other things in the lab. Accidentally breaking one or two things in there. Opsie? I'm not going to be in trouble, am I? Nah! I'll be fine!
