69. The Artful Distractor

And so it began. Luke, Tiffany, Ken, Max, and Rose got as close as possible to the front door without drawing any suspicions to the idea that they may be trying to escape.

They remained close to one another and walked as naturally as they could.

Ken: (to the others) Walk with me.

Max: Huh?

Ken led them away from the back door.

He then used his bionic connection to the world wide web to record them walking away from the front door from the cameras point of view, saved it as a file and prepped himself to send it to the camera's footage when necessary.

All this he did, but not before erasing and replacing all the data showing them actually walking back at that time.

Ken: Alright, we're in position and were ready to go.

Max: What?

Ken: Don't worry about it.

Max looked questionably at the other three. They simply gave him affirmative nods.

Ken continued to lead the way, his eyes turning to every direction, remotely hacking each camera while the others stayed right behind him.

To a normal onlooker, it would have seemed as though a group of normal teens were simply hanging out.

Within a few minutes, Ken finally stopped.

Ken: Alright. We're done.

Tiffany: Hmph. Good.

There were still plenty of students outside the classrooms, talking and hanging out.

Max: What about the students?

Ken: I've got that covered.

Max: Couldn't Rose just "psy-blast" them or something?

Rose closed her mouth with her hands immediately.

The narrative has been taken without permission. Report any sightings.

Max: Huh?

Tiffany: There's too many people, and "psy-blasts" are very dangerous.

Max: Huh?

Tiffany: Besides, it's unnecessary. Ken?

Ken: Could it be that her royal Highness had made the request for a signal?

Tiffany: Yeah. Do it!

Ken: Ok.

For a moment, there was silence, and Max was tempted to question it.

Max: Sooooo... uhhhhh

Just before Max could finish his sentence, the loud crying of a baby could be heard in the halls.

Max: What the...

It was a deep cry. The kind of baby cry that digs into the nerves and makes peoples skin crawl.

Rose closed her ears and flinched, as did most other students.

Voice 1: Where is that coming from?

Voice 2: Whose kid is that?

Voice 3: What's going on with that poor baby?

The cry was so realistic and pure that one would have thought it real, but of course, it was, in reality, a pre-recorded and greatly worked upon crying baby audio that Ken had played from a device in the school.

Ken: And that is that.

The students all walked over to see as to what had caused the trouble to the child, leaving the halls completely empty.

The other four had their hands on their ears while waiting for the other students to pass.

Rose: Ken, how could you? That was so mean.

Ken: Yes, yes. But hey, it was successful, wasn't it? The human mind can not help but respond to a child's tears and wailing.

Max: Yeah, wasn't that overkill?

Ken: Well, I thought it would be thematically sound, given today's mission.

Tiffany simply face palmed and decided to just go along with it.

Tiffany: Alright. Let's just go before someone gets suspicious.

Max, Luke, Rose and Ken: Hmph.

They all turned and made for the door, but Tiffany suddenly halted them just as they were one turn away.

Tiffany: Hey, Rose?

Rose: Yeah?

Tiffany: Could you use your powers to scope the scene? I just wanna make sure that there is absolutely no one over there.

Rose: Right.

Ken: Not that there would be.

Rose continued to search and was just about done when...

Rose: Hold it. Someone's coming.

Tiffany: Huh?

Rose: From over there.

On the other side of the hall, from the other path to the front door, was a one Principal Richard Valencia, walking towards the front door.

Rose held her mouth in shock to keep sounds from coming out of it while Tiffany and the others hid their heads behind the wall as the principal looked around and started to open the door.

Max: (whisper) What is going on?

Tiffany: I don't know.

Max: Why doesn't he like babies?

Tiffany: I don't...

The silliness of the question made Tiffany pause for a moment.

Tiffany: ... know.

Max: Ken?

Ken simply shrugged. He also did not know what to make of it.

Most men and women, on hearing a crying child, would run to its aid without a second thought.

However, this calm and logical principal, even while hearing a crying child, could think clearly and deduce that it was a distraction of some kind, as their school had no babies that he knew of.
