53. Rejection

He, irregardless, ate his breakfast and headed out to class, skateboarding, as per usual.

It wasn't long before he'd finally made it to school. Thirty minutes early, no less. To him, that was some kind of record for an ordinary school day.

Max: (thinking: Alright, now that I'm here, I've gotta find those guys.)

There was a lot they had to talk about. Their powers and Wolfram.

He almost immediately found Tiffany by her locker, and he called her.

Max: Tiff! Hey, what's up!

Tiffany: Max?

He ran to her and got to her.

Max: So, how goes it, m'lady?

Max bowed to her playfully.

Tiffany: I'm fine. How are you feeling?

Max: I'm good, I'm good.

He had so many questions.

Tiffany: Great.

At that moment, Tiffany took a step back and bowed to Max.

Max: Wha...

Tiffany: Thank you for saving me and my allies, Maximillian Hunter. I am indebted to you.

Max: Huh? What?! Wait! You don't have to pay me back for that. We're teammates, right?

Tiffany: Thank you for your kindness, Max. However, we are not teammates.

Max: What!? But you said...

Tiffany: I only said that to get rid of you.

Max: But...

Tiffany: Look, it's not that I have no understanding of your strength, nor the fact that I do not believe you have the guts to put your life on the line for others. But rather, it is the fact that we as a team think it would be unwise to have you.

You could be reading stolen content. Head to Royal Road for the genuine story.

She then gently closed her locker and slowly walked away.

Max: But I... but I...

Max stopped in shock for a moment before eventually following her.

Max: Whaddya mean unwise? And whaddya mean team? You all decided I wasn't cut out for this?

Tiffany: Well, Rose still wanted you to be a part of the team, but the rest of us, not so much.

Max: (thinking: Even Ken...) But... but why...

Tiffany: Because you are far too big of a risk factor.

Max: But...

Tiffany: Don't worry about it too much. In due time, you could actually end up joining us. But not right this moment.

Max stopped in his tracks again before following her again.

Max: Hold on. But I saved you guys.

Tiffany: You did. And I am genuinely grateful for your help. However, that does not mean that you just get to join the team right away.

Max: Well, what else is there?

Tiffany: Max, do you know what a team is?

Max: Huh?

Tiffany: A team works with multiple people, like how your teeth all fulfil different roles.

Max: Huh?

Tiffany: Do you get it?

Max: Uhhh. No.

Tiffany: Each tooth does something different. Sure they can try and fulfill each others roles, but, in the end, if they can't find out what they're good at and focus on that as well as work well with the other teeth, all that would happen would be chaos.

Max: What?

Tiffany: You don't get it?

Max: No. I mean, yes... I mean no. I mean... I have super speed. No one on your team has that.

Tiffany: True. But we already decided that that was not enough.

Max: Huh? When?

Tiffany: During our team meeting?

Max: Team meeting? Wait, I missed a team meeting!?

Tiffany: Shhh. Quiet down.

There were plenty of students walking around in the vicinity.

Max: (whispering) I missed a team meeting?

Tiffany: Technically, no, because you're not a part of the team.

Max: But... That's not fair.

Tiffany: Max...

Max: I should at least get a... err... briefing. Yeah.

Tiffany: Oh, that? I already told you. You're not a part of the team.

Max: What! But...

Max paused, and Tiffany continued walking.

Tiffany: Like I said, Max. Maybe some time later. But not now. And also, it's Tiffany.

Max: But I... I just wanted to help.

Max sighed as he turned to head to his locker.

Max: Jeez.

He pulled out yet another random set of books. "Who knew what he was studying that day and who cared?" he thought. Just as he was about to open his locker, he heard a voice.

Ken: You best pick out the right books this time.

Max: Ken!

Ken: Morning, Max. How goes it?

Max: I'm fine. And hey, what was that about?

Ken: Hmmm?

Max: The team. Tiffany told me.

Ken: The team? You mean me vouching for you not to join?

Max: Yeah. Why'd ya think I shouldn't be on the team?

Ken: Oh, that. Well, that has more to do with your personality and the fact that you're new here and a lot less with your powers.

Max: Whaddya mean?

Ken: Well, I suppose I could elaborate further. We had a team meeting last night at about 8 pm.
