105. How To Human

Julianne: First off, about living on Earth.

Rose: Uh huh.

She listened attentively, like a cadet to a general.

Julianne: You'll get used to it more easily than you'd think.

Rose: Really?

Julianne: Mmm, hmm.

Her eyes stared forlorningly into the air.

Julianne: When I was first here, on earth, I had a tendency to try to recharge everything with my powers rather than with a socket. Believe me, it was so frustrating to learn to use a charger.

Rose: (gasp) I know, right. Whenever I drop something, I usually use my powers to pick it right up. But when I'm at school, I get so scared that...

Julianne: You can't do anything?

Rose: Oh my gosh! Yes!

All this time, Julianne thought. All this time... perhaps this girl was just... lonely.

Julianne: And then someone sees you, just standing there, looking confused...

Rose: Yes!

Julianne: And then... ugh... Believe me, I understand.

Rose: Oh my gosh! Yes! That's exactly how it happens!

Julianne: Hmm. I know.

Of course, her own friends would never understand that pain. After all, they were all human. They all knew human life, but an alien? An alien came to Earth not knowing its culture or systems and had to learn everything from scratch. And that, by no means, was an easy feat. Julianne Hunter knew that well.

Julianne: But you shouldn't let that bother you. It's natural.

Rose: But, what if someone begins to suspect that something is wrong with me?

Julianne: Don't worry about it.

Rose: But...

Julianne: Rose...

Rose: Y.. yes, Mrs Hunter?

Julianne: Believe me. Most people aren't looking for an alien when they see something weird. So, there's no need to worry.

If you encounter this tale on Amazon, note that it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.

Rose: Ok.

Those words brought her some comfort, but she still looked quite troubled.

Julianne: And if you want, you can do what I did... and practice.

Rose: Practice.

Julianne: Yes. Well, my husband had a habit of practising around other people....

Her eyes shone as she said that.

Julianne: ... but in my case, I practised in my house.

Rose: Really?

Julianne: Mmm. hmmm.

She stood up and got to her vacuum cleaner.

Julianne: Now, I can easily recharge this thing with nothing more than my finger.

She tapped it with her finger, and the battery bar slowly started to move from red to green.

Julianne: But, in order to practise, even though no one can see me in my own home...

She picked up the wire and attached it to the socket while Rose watched her intently.

Julianne: ... I use it even though I don't have to.

Rose's eyes shone again.

Julianne: If you do that enough times... trust me, you'll get so used to it that you won't even have to think about it.

Rose: Really?

Julianne: Mmm, hmm. Absolutely.

Rose: Oh, thank you, Mrs Hunter. Really!

Rose git up herself and put her phone on the ground. She then, rather than psychically picking it up, picked it up with her own hands.

Julianne: Just like that. As long as you do that at home, you'll be fine in no time.

Rose: Hmph!

Julianne: Of course, you'll need some time to flex your "muscles" every once in a while. So... I'd suggest finding a nice place from which to use your powers. Otherwise, you'll get all pent up and upset.

Rose: Oh.... ok. That's no problem. I'll use my powers to protect people with Tiff and the others.

Julianne: That works.

Rose: Hmph. Thank you again, Mrs Hunter.

Julianne: Alright, any other questions?

Rose immediately started to blush. An act that did not go past Julianne Hunter's notice.

Rose: Ummmm... well... you see...

Julianne: You said you wanted to know more about protonites, right?

Rose: Ummm... yeah... That!

Her eyes and body shot up attentively, piquing Julianne's curiosity. Julianne's own eyes narrowed, almost as though something seriously bothered her.

Julianne: That's fine. But.... could I ask why? I mean... It's not like I wont, its just...

Rose: (suddenly) I... It's nothing!

She seemed more flustered than before. And that was the first time since she'd met her that she'd interrupted her.

Rose: S... sorry. I'm... I'm... so sorry. Its... it's nothing. I just...

Her eyes avoided contact with Julianne and turned to the side of the room, making Julianne even more curious.

Rose: I just... want to know how to... treat Max, y'know. He's a... (like a question) new member of our team.

Her eyes couldn't look straight at the woman in front of her.

Julianne had turned suspicious for just a moment, but her heart calmed down as she immediately discovered what had been bothering the girl.

She sighed. Young love. She knew that feeling well. The blushing, the nervous looking away, all that was obvious. And, of course, she was talking to the mother of her crush.

But, to keep Rose's pride, she decided to pretend not to notice.

Julianne: Oh, really. Well... I appreciate you trying to make my son feel at home in your team. Really...

Roses eyes slowly and slightly ashamedly turned to Julianne.

Julianne: ... but, I don't think it will be necessary.

Rose: Huh!?

Julianne: Protonites, like sirenites, have a physiology similar to that of humans. As a result, there really isn't that big of a difference between them.

Rose: O.... oh....

She seemed really upset to hear that.
