108. Two Daughters

Rose didn't know quite what to say to her.

Julianne: Rose, could you get me the eggs in the third counter?

Rose: (quietly) Sure....

In her mind, she didn't know what to say.

After getting the eggs, she gave them to Julianne.

Julianne: Thank you.

She then promptly began to crack them over a bowl.

Rose silently watched her as she added flour and then began to knead the dough for a few minutes until...

Julianne: Ok. You try.

Rose flinched. Her voice came up so suddenly.

Rose: S... sure....

She awkwardly grabbed the bowl and began to weakly knead it herself, much to Julianne's amusement.

She giggled as she watched the teenager.

Rose: I... I'm sorry. I'm not very...

Julianne: Keep at it.

Rose: Hmm?

Julianne: You'll get the hang of it. Trust me.

Rose: Oh... Ok.....

She continued to knead the dough while Julianne began to cut up fresh fruit for juice.

Julianne: Y'know, I could always buy juice from the store, but... well, I guess I'm old-fashioned. Hehehe....

Rose: O... Oh....

Her answer wasn't disinterested but rather disturbed. Julianne, naturally, noticed this as well.

Rose continued to fight with the dough, this time mixing it in a bowl. In an ordinary scenario, she could use her psychic powers to deal with strenuous labour, but in this case....

Julianne paused to watch her struggle again, fighting as hard as she could with her own two hands to make sure she could move the ladel as well as trying to keep herself from spilling some of the dough.

A mess that shortly after followed, as she used too much force and dropped all the dough on the floor.

Rose: Oh no! Oh no! Oh no!

She immediately flew into a panic.

Rose: I'm so so so sorry, Mrs Hunter! Please, let me clean....

Julianne: It's alright.

Rose: But... I....

Julianne: It's ok, Rose.

She gently put her hand on her shoulder.

Julianne: It's fine, really.

Rose: But... I.....

She had just been shown pity and love. And now, she'd just messed up the floor belonging to said person. What could she say?

Her countenance was now that of a sorrowful child.

Julianne turned and grabbed a mop, which Rose shot up to look at.

Julianne: I'll clean up. How about you try that again?

Rose: Hmm?

That statement shocked Rose even more.

Rose: But... Mrs Hunter... I...

Julianne: It's alright.

She forced a smile.

Julianne: After all, you still have to "train."

Rose stared in disbelief as Julianne motioned to her to start over. Her eyes turned hesitantly towards the bowl and ladel.

The eggs and flour were still there. As was the sugar and salt. There was plenty.

Julianne: And take your time. Trust me, no one gets it right on their first try. I sure didn't.

Rose hesitantly turned around to try once more.

Her hands cautiously grabbed the eggs slowly cracked them open, a few eggshell pieces falling onto the bowl.

Rose: Ummm....

Julianne: Use the spoon to get the pieces out.

Rose: R... right...

And so she did. And she did everything else relatively easily.

And then came the beast. Mixing in all the ingredients with the ladel.

She started again, this time, using more force.

Her grunts echoed through the room as Julianne threw the remains of their previous attempt out.

Her arms quickly got tired, but she pushed on even more, and after that, even more, after all, Julianne Hunter was shortly after then standing behind her.

This went on for a few more moments.

Julianne: You don't have to push yourself so hard.

Rose immediately paused and took a breather.

Rose: O... k...

Julianne simply took the bowl and ladel from her.

Julianne: Don't worry about it. It's your first time. And first times are never easy.

She mixed it only for a minute before returning it to Rose, who continued to struggle with it, while Julianne watched her.

As per her instructions, she took the bowl and worked on the dough less aggressively, with Julianne giving instructions here and there.

Rose: (panting) I.... I think I did it!

Julianne: That you did!

The pair shared a smile before Rose turned to give her the dough.

Rose joyfully gave the dough to the mother before she put it in the oven.

It was then that Rose wanted to say something. After all, Julianne Hunter had been so kind to her. However, before she could even put into words what she wanted to say...

Julianne: And Rose?

Rose: Y... yes, Mrs Hunter.

Julianne: You don't need to hide it. I mean... I get it.

Rose gasped.

She instantly knew what she was referring to.

Julianne stood up, having closed and turned on the oven.

She then turned to the teen girl in front of her, who was too shocked to move.

Julianne placed her hand on her shoulder.

Julianne: I was a teen daughter once, too, you know?

Those words.

All on their own, made tears come out of Rose's eyes as she , shortly after, winced.

Julianne hugged the sobbing girl.

Julianne: It's ok, Rose. It's... ok. there... there....
