Chapter 19

I went through the market place once again and bought anything that should be made into a potion. I found some herbal shops where I bought a lot of materials from.

After all that, my funds were half way depleted leaving me with 1 gold coin and a few silver coins. Fortunately, with learning alchemy I can recuperate some of my losses and sell potential potions I won't need.

When I got back, I had my backpack full of herbs. The nurse said to me that Doctor was helping the patients and when he had time, he'll check up on me. She also informed me at if I had any questions, I could ask her as she is a Tier 1 alchemist.

Meaning she can do basic potions like health potion, mana potion and others.

I went into the room with the alchemist set and I put a rag on my face before starting. I took out the books and started looking through them. I found one that had only Tier 0 recipes that I used and the other book was of all the different herbs and plants with notes in it. The other books I left in the drawer.

I turned the book to the first Tier 0 recipe and it was an ointment for swelling. One can't expect much from a Tier 0 recipe, but maybe some of it can be used in certain situations.

I cut up the needed herbs, smashed it with a pestle and then put it on a slow fire. While it was getting its consistency I read the encyclopaedia about herbs.

It had some interesting information with the notes on the side being an additional help. While the Tier 0 alchemy recipes were a disappointment and for me a loss of time, that couldn't be said for the herbs that they're from. In these notes was said a lot of these basic herbs make the basis of advanced potions.

So, in a way this can't be skipped. But hey at least I don't have to worry about any possible swelling.

I continued making ointments, potions and I even managed to make a poison. But it was bad as it didn't manage to outperform the basic poison I had in my ring.

Afterwards as I was going to go ahead and eat something for lunch. The Doctor came into the room.

" So, how's it going?"

" It's going well. Is it fine I used the bottles that were below the desk to store the potions?"

" It's fine, after all It's meant to be used that way. So, what're you gonna do with what you've made?"

" I thought about saving something for myself. While selling most of it. Can you help me with that?"

" Well, of course. I'd be happy to do so."

With that affirmation he stayed with me for an hour, answering most of my questions.

It's good to know that he values money this much. By how he's acting and his comments I think if I didn't cooperate with him in selling it through him it would be hard to get him to talk too much. If I was non-compliant, he'd lose the monopoly.

In the end I had a lunch with him and we talked some more. In every conversation I had with him he mostly avoided talking about healing recipes.

" Master, what do you think is the most difficult to deal with poison?" I asked.

He held his head for a while in thought before saying.

" It depends on what you're dealing with. But the most difficult to treat that I came into contact with was a [ infestation poison ]. When it gets into your body it just acts as your regular blood inside your body. That doesn't mean a certain death one might live their entire life without noticing a change. But the moment they have a open wound the poisoned blood makes it so the wound quickly festers and necrosis starts."

" How much time does a person have before they're dead?"

" It's usually about 10 minutes, but that's not the bad part. The bad parts the fact that if the wound is still bleeding the festering and necrosis will continue. So cutting of the person's limb is just making the death come faster."

" Is there a way to treat it?"

" I don't know about any antidote. But the only method that comes to my mind now is to cut the limb with necrosis and burn the wound so it closes."

" Where was it you treated such a poison."

He held his hands as he said. " I looked on, I didn't know. What?.. What to do? It was below the Capital in the Dungeon city as one of my friends died to it."

We ate in silence with the last information still lingering in the air.

" You interested in poison making? It would make a great fit seeing as you're an archer." He said, his previous expression wiped off of his face.

" Yeah, I'd like to learn it. No offense. But I think it would make a great asset for me and my friend. As we plan on going on a lot of adventures." He looked at me as I said that and paused his eating.

" We can tailor your learning a bit towards it. As you're an Adventurer you should have some [ spider sacks ], if you didn't sell them."

" I still have a some of them. I didn't sell them because of the poison."

" Good when you'll be ready. I'll let you experiment with them and show you some recipes that require them."

" Why not now?"

" High risk of injury and messing up my room."

The rest of our lunch was quiet with waiters coming and going about. I had a steak with some whiskey while Doc had pork with some white wine.

After we were done, we headed back into the hospital. There weren't a lot of patients that required immediate care so he helped me.

" No, this way you'll burn it. Get the flame a bit milder." I did as was told.

" When you don't know what you're doing it's always best to keep the flame tame so you can see the change as it takes place. That's a crucial part when you'll be experimenting as you know where it went wrong. Besides that, you can avoid an injury all together when you know when to stop." He said as he looked on as I continued doing my own things.

" You don't have to slice the [ name of grass ] into small pieces. You only have to cut the stem off and use the pestle to get the water out of it."

This continued until I notice the sun slowly setting. At this point I made potions until my hands were numb and ears sore from all the lectures and comments I was subjected to.

But it wasn't for naught as I managed to make every recorded Tier 0 recipe which I had ingredients for. The thing that baffled me the most was the fact there were more baffling recipes like herbal teas and such.

But in the end I still got it.

[ Alchemist ]

- tier : 0 junior

+5% proficiency to all actions involving alchemy

With this I'll be making the perfect herbal teas in the world after I get it up to full Tier.

" Master, in a short while I'll have to leave as I promised to meet up with my friend before dinner. May I request that before I go you show me how you brew a poison?"

" I may. But look closely then. What's waiting for you on the path of Alchemy."

" As you say Master."

I watched on as he took out a bunch of different herbs from the shelf. He cut them up while some fumes wafted in the air. I smelled it even through the rag I had on my face, but Doctor wasn't fazed as he breathed it in without changing his face.

I think I now know the reason for his milky white skin. I'll make sure to mention it to Stella so she can decide if it's worth it.

The Doctor then crushed them in the pestle and separated each one into bottles. He then added them in seemingly random intervals into a bowl above the fire. He stirred it while adding them when everything was inside, he stirred some more until the liquid inside turned into a purple colour with bubbles.

" All done. Did you understand something of what I was doing?"

I explained to him what I knew.

" But what does it do?"

" It causes burns from the inside. It has different stages of being poisoned."

" Can I try some?" I said and took out one of my arrows.

" Sure." He said and I dipped my arrow in it.
