Chapter 5 - The Weakest Monster Available

Snuggled up amongst his family safe and sound the little rabbit pondered on the sight he had witnessed outside the burrow. Although initially startled at the predatory nature of the dungeon displayed, Roger eventually came to himself. This was exactly what a dungeon filled with monsters was supposed to be like. As a said monster himself he shouldn’t have expected anything less. What had startled him the most was the sheer strength he could sense from the beings within range. It felt insurmountable from his baby bunny perspective. Now having calmed down he used his high intelligence to understand that all he had to do to reach that strength was level up. Once again filled with purpose and seeing the path to fulfill that purpose he regained his confidence to once again set out and explore. Right after his nap. Nap time was almost as important as bedtime after all.

A few hours later he woke up and cast [CLEANSE] leaving him refreshed and raring to go. His Mother and siblings were still sleeping so Roger figured he would just stealthily sneak out of the pile. He didn’t want to disturb their beauty sleep. Before that though, he needed to check his notifications.

[LEVEL UP] You have reached Level 2.

4 Attribute points have been distributed according to the natural inclinations of your race.

You have 1 Skill point and 1 Attribute point to distribute manually.

Another level up. From his natural growth as a rabbit no doubt. The levelling up of his skills might also be helping. Thinking speed would definitely be his friend in the future he allocated two free points to [AGILITY]. Moving on, something interesting had caught his attention. The skill [GUIDANCE] had its own tab in the menu screen. Opening it up with a thought he found that [GUIDANCE] was just a fancy way of saying ‘map skill’. This would come handy. Every part of the burrow he had explored was already displayed on the screen, with unexplored areas just as foggy dark space. It turned out that he didn’t need to be physically present for areas on the map screen to appear he just needed to have glimpsed it or sensed it somehow. His [ULTRASOUND] skill sure picked up a lot. The large cavern he had seen earlier was also detailed on the map. Projecting with his mind he could even manipulate the angle that he could see the map from which basically gave him a 3D vision of the area. Very handy indeed.

On another note, it had become clear why the miracle of instantaneous movement had occurred while he was frozen in fright earlier. The [MINOR TELEPORT] skill had come his rescue. Something he was absolutely ecstatic about, who didn’t love the idea of teleportation? Focusing within himself he could feel the skill, how it worked and also its limitations. It could be used repeatedly without consequence, however, the user had to have a destination in mind and the destination itself had to be within twenty feet. The skill was heavy on energy resources, in this case mana, and he felt that he could only use it about four or five times at once, dependent on the distance travelled, before running out of mana completely.

Happy with his gains the rabbit used [STEALTH] and his newly acquired [MINOR TELEPORT] to slip out unnoticed before once again making his way to the main entrance of the burrow. Upon approaching the entrance the powers clashing outside could once again be felt, however, this time he was prepared and stood firm.

Well that also seemed helpful though there didn’t seem to be much of a difference. The only thing keeping him from just fleeing was logic. Getting back on track the baby bunny crouched down by the entrance and gazed out at the cavern to decide what would become his first prey in this world.

There were many different kinds of monsters fighting for supremacy throughout the cavern. There was a decent view as the entrance of the burrow was dug into the side of the wall at one of the highest points around the layout of the cavern. Ridges, giant vine plants and large boulders created complex paths throughout the area. Several small ponds that glowed with mana radiating from them were the only points that had lush vegetation. Even in such a mana rich environment, the ponds were clearly a resource that everyone wanted to hoard for themselves. At the bottom of the slight incline from the entrance was the smallest pond. Many horned monster rabbit variants were guarding the pond, battling dozens of fierce creatures. They weren’t letting the creatures get anywhere near the tiny pond nor the burrow’s entrance in which he sat. At least, that was the goal of his brethren anyway. Being rabbits, even monster rabbits, meant that they were at the very bottom of the food chain. Magic flew and horns clashed, even so, weird frog monsters were slipping through the gaps as they offed their opponents and dove into the pond. His brethren were in a constant state of survival mode, barely a moment to rest after a victory before the next enemy was upon them.

Deciding that he was too weak to assist right now the rabbit looked over the entire surroundings with a more calculating eye. To his right were two small ponds one guarded by rat like creatures and the other by snake creatures that had legs at the front of their bodies. Peculiar. Beyond the ponds was a cave entrance that let in warm rays of sunlight. These vision skills were fantastic they even picked up heat signatures from so far away, and the detail was amazing. Definitely worth it, even if he was born with it. Gazing back to the middle of the cavern and past the immediate pond in front of him there was another pond, except this one was surrounded by more frog creatures. Wait a minute… They wanted to double dip. Not only did they have their own pond but they were also fighting for the smaller pond next door. How ruthless.

Moving on he glanced to his left which is where the largest pond sat by itself. Surprisingly there were no monsters fighting to get into that pond or even fighting nearby. Behind the largest pond was another cave entrance except that this entrance was dark and seemed to lead deeper into the dungeon. Focusing back on the vacant pond there came a realisation, it wasn’t entirely empty. The largest creature in the cavern had somehow initially avoided his gaze. His [PANOPTIC VISION] had felt suppressed once he finally managed to catch a glimpse of the creature, probably a stealth skill. The back half of its body was submerged in the water while its front half seemed to be snoozing. It had a lithe body covered in long spines with a turtle head and short stumpy lizard legs. After observing the creature for a while, he had finally decided what his first prey would be. It might be the largest but from his point of view it had to be the weakest monster available.
