Chapter 39 - Yin Mengxia's Technique

Yù Quán was starting to get a bit tired of tournaments. He felt that when reading them in Xianxia novels, they were cool, letting you see the power of the main character and other characters in the world. But, actually being in the tournament was a long process. Every fight took as long as needed, and even if it was a short one like some of the ones that had taken place that day, there was still time between each match. Yàn Lìqín had points to discuss in the earlier matches, but now he was just waiting there. Yù Quán decided to meditate and replenish his qi to pass the time. He was running on empty after the strike he dealt Dong Xiaoli.

Before long, the announcer called out again. “Next! Tan Junjie! Yin Mengxia!”

Everyone in the Yellow Qilin Academy looked at her as she stood up. She immediately headed for the arena grounds without any words. Yù Quán wasn’t surprised. Yin Mengxia wasn’t cold, but he rarely saw her be too emotional. Yù Quán looked around to see who Tan Junjie might be and where he was from. After he scanned most of the crowd, he was someone walking down the steps to the arena grounds. He was an average-looking guy with Flying Cloud Sect robes on.

Yù Quán was interested but not too worried. He didn’t think just any random person from the Flying Cloud Sect could compare to his senior sister. He more so wanted to see Yin Mengxia’s techniques since he hadn’t seen them yet. She was told to practice footwork and evasion during the elimination rounds, and he had confined himself to closed cultivation back at the academy. He really didn’t know much about Yin Mengxia or Liàng Píng until the last fight.

Yin Mengxia gave a respectful nod to Tan Junjie, and he returned it. Not all the contestants would have issues, but tensions were high, so it was common. Both simply acknowledged each other and waited for the announcer to start the match.

“Tan Junjie of the Flying Cloud Sect versus Yin Mengxia of the Yellow Qilin Academy, begin!”

Both parties burst out towards each other and began exchanging blows when they met in the middle. Each would throw out an attack or a series of attacks, and the other would evade. This was a fight in Yù Quán’s eyes. There was too much of a skill gap between most people in this tournament. He felt what he was watching now was a true contest of combat. He began analyzing the two fighters. Neither seemed good enough at hand-to-hand combat for it to be their specialty, but Tan Junjie’s evasion was visibly better than Yin Mengxia’s. He felt the Flying Cloud Sect likely was the reason for this. But Yin Mengxia still being able to keep up with someone who seemed to specialize in evasion was a great feat.

Eventually, the two broke off from each other. Tan Junjie activated a technique, and his arms began to dissipate. Yù Quán was surprised; usually, the members of the Flying Cloud Sect created mist. But, this Tan Junjie was turning part of his body into it. Tan Junjie had two fists floating in the air and a slight mist emitting from where his arms should be. It looked like there was smoke coming off of his body that had happened to have no arms.

Yù Quán couldn’t really tell what the technique was useful for. He was still visible; how would this stop Yin Mengxia? Yin Mengxia responded by activating her own technique. She put her hands in front of her chest, one over the other, and streams of light blue and gray qi began collecting in her palms. Tan Junjie burst out, trying to get there before her technique finished, but he was too late. The qi became a grey sphere that grew until it was the size of a cantaloupe. Then, it solidified into what looked like the moon. Yù Quán was intrigued. He hadn’t yet seen techniques to create solid objects out of qi. They usually still looked like qi. Yù Quán wondered how many people had techniques that could achieve what Yin Mengxia had.

Yin Mengxia had also been told to show off by Yàn Lìqín, so she jumped back as Tan Junjie was about to reach her. She tossed the moon, and it began to spin around her. Tan Junjie went for another attack, not realizing a moon was spinning around Yin Mengxia and heading straight for his face.

Thud

He got smacked by the moon. He was thrown aback slightly but could dodge when the moon came back around again. This is where Yù Quán realized the usefulness of Tan Junjie’s technique. Tan Junjie started throwing punches in a combo. But Yù Quán couldn’t telegraph the punches as well since all you could see were fists in the air.

“What a weird technique…” he mumbled under his breath.

Despite the technique, Yin Mengxia still seemed to be able to dodge, albeit worse than before. Suddenly, Yin Mengxia jumped up and did a barrel roll over Tan Junjie, hitting him in the back with the moon. Then she landed a few meters from him. By the time he could recover, Yin Mengxia had pulled the moon back, now floating in her palm, and then pushed out. The moon flew out quickly and gained size just as fast. As Tan Junjie turned around, a moon the size of him was right in front of his face.

Boom!

Tan Junjie was sent rolling across the ground until he hit the wall of the array. Yin Mengxia retracted her moon, having it shrink and return to orbiting around her, ready for the following exchange. But Tan Junjie didn’t move. The announcer looked over at Tan Junjie, then shook his head.

“Yin Mengxia wins!”

Yin Mengxia’s shoulders relaxed slightly when she heard those words, but Yù Quán knew she barely broke a sweat. She broke more of a sweat trying to show off than dealing with Tan Junjie. While Yin Mengxia was heading back to the stands, Yù Quán felt a tap on his shoulder. Behind him was Yàn Lìqín.

“I have something I need you to do,” he said.

“What is it, Grand Elder?”

“I need you to win the tournament.”

“Huh?”
