Chapter 22 - Murder Mantra

Chapter 22 - Murder Mantra

Yù Quán awoke to the elders and the disciples all surrounding him. Yàn Lìqín was smiling, Elder Jiang looked emotionless as usual, and the disciples looked somewhat relaxed, but they were in a readied stance.

Yàn Lìqín was the first to speak. “Congratulations on your imheritance, Disciple Yù Quán.”

“I got it?”

“Yes, we could see the phenomenon. It seems something about you resonated with one of the academy’s past masters.”

Yù Quán checked his information.

“Murder is not malignant, nor my mistress. Murder is my tool.”

Convert killing intent into the Murderous Flame, an extremely rare strange fire. With the Murderous Flame, killing intent is no longer a pressure but a flame that has a variety of uses.

Can be learned.

Yù Quán was surprised. Although the method would take plenty of work, it was simple. Such strength in such a simple way seemed brutish to him. It was likely the master who made this didn’t use any techniques or fighting styles that required finesse. He probably used his bare hands. Luckily for Yù Quán, this was precisely what he needed.

He had a lot of things to do to be strong, which would require lots of points. Yù Quán would probably be busy for the foreseeable future.

Elder Jiang turned around and walked back to his desk. “Hmph! Seems you are quite lucky.”

He jumped back on his desk and lay down again. “I’ll be waiting to see the Yellow Qilin Dance.”

Yù Quán cupped his hands and bowed. “I will do my best not to disappoint, Elder Jiang.”

“Yeah yeah, now unless you need anything else, all of you out.”

No one could see since everyone had turned their backs and began heading for the door, but there was a slight smile plastered on Elder Jiang’s face.

When everyone was outside, Yàn Lìqín turned to face the disciples before him. “Okay! Yù Quán, you must cultivate diligently! You must become as strong as possible in the next two months.”

“What’s in two months?” asked Yù Quán.

“Yin Mengxia and Liàng Píng can explain it to you while they show you around the branch. I’ve already registered you as a student, but seeing as we’ve just accepted Rèn Chāngmíng, he will come with me to get registered, as well.”

All the disciples cupped their hands and bowed. “Yes, Grand Elder.” they said in unison.

Rèn Chāngmíng waved to Yù Quán as he and Yàn Lìqín walked off. Yù Quán waved back before turning to Liàng Píng and Yin Mengxia. He cupped his hands and slightly bowed to them. “Senior Brother Liang, Senior Sister Yin, I am in your care.”

Yin Mengxia smiled, but Liàng Píng grunted. Yù Quán didn’t know why Liàng Píng was so hostile to him, but he wasn’t worried. If anything, he would have plenty of time to be friendly with his senior brother when he made the Eccentric Branch the top branch in the academy. Until then, Yù Quán would just smile and be easygoing. Of course, he wouldn’t be bullied, but he didn’t see Liàng Píng as the type.

Yin Mengxia and Liàng Píng took Yù Quán around to see the branch. Unexpectedly, there wasn’t much. Not many students either. In fact, Yù Quán felt that there were no students at the branch. After being shown the different facilities and getting explanations and answers to his questions, the two showed Yù Quán to his living quarters.

“Here is where you’ll stay, Junior Brother. There is no need to be formal around here; the elders have their own places.” Yin Mengxia explained. Yù Quán didn’t mind her; she was kind and mild-tempered. She also talked very formally, even compared to the standard in the Xianxia worlds. It was probably just their culture. Reputation was held in high regard, sometimes over their own family. Those who didn’t care about reputation either outcasted for it, like the bandits, or didn’t need it, like Elder Jiang. But, despite all this, it didn’t make sense to Yù Quán why Yin Mengxia had to be so formal.

“Right then, we have shown you the courtyard, training grounds, and the cultivation caves, and you have already experienced the cultivation library. Is there anything else you need to know?”

“Yes, Senior Sister. Where are all the other disciples?” Yù Quán asked. He really couldn’t contain his curiosity. No one had mentioned it since he and Rèn Chāngmíng had arrived.

Yin Mengxia looked slightly embarrassed while Liàng Píng snorted. “W- well, Junior Brother…”

Since she couldn’t seem to find the words she wanted to say, Liàng Píng cut it.

“There are none.”

“Huh?!”

Liàng Píng rolled his eyes. “There are no other disciples. The Eccentric Branch is newly established. You are among the first students in this branch. Work to make a name for it.”

With that, Liàng Píng turned and walked away. Yin Mengxia stayed long enough for her and Yù Quán to share a bow and a farewell.

‘Liàng Píng’s attitude was really something. I don’t know what I did to get on his bad side… But that doesn’t matter now. I have to train for two months.’

“...Blossom Tournament.”

The Blossom Tournament was explained to Yù Quán when visiting the training grounds. They were on the topic of training diligently, and the conversation naturally led to the event Yàn Lìqín had alluded to that he would need to work hard for the next two months. The Blossom Tournament was held by the mayor of Blossom Falls every five years. Because Blossom Falls was technically under the command of a city, no sects or other powers could hold sway over it. But this didn’t stop them from trying. Blossom Falls is known as a place for many of the ‘under-the-table’ dealings. Many groups want as much authority and power over Blossom Falls as possible. Even the groups that don’t participate in such dealings wish for control because if they stand and allow them to take hold of Blossom Falls, they would be able to do nothing if they decided to commit atrocities. Or, more selfishly, they could be bullied.

The mayor couldn’t stand the constant pressure, and going to the city without evidence didn’t do much. So he started the Blossom Tournament. In the tournament, cultivators compete in nonlethal combat. There are many rewards for people who do well, but the person who wins will be allowed a position in the town government. This means that if the groups play their cards right, they can put someone who takes their orders in power. This also allows the groups to show their strength in a safe and controlled way, which helps to keep all groups in check and balance. Overall, the mayor maintains control over the situation, groups can gain power with strength, anyone can gain resources from doing well, and the groups won’t act rashly because they have a general idea of the groups' strength.

Yàn Lìqín wasn’t looking for any authority in the town. It was too much work for him. Now Yù Quán knows why. He must be way too busy after just establishing a new branch. What Yàn Lìqín wanted was at least three spots in the top five. It seemed the branch needed those resources and to make a name for itself. They had scouted Yù Quán and accepted Rèn Chāngmíng because they needed as many talented individuals as possible. If they just receive anybody, they won’t place well.

Yù Quán looked at his information. He had many new things to try and work on. “Let’s get to work!”
