Chapter 3 - Retrieval Quest

Chapter 3 - Retrieval Quest

Yu Quan looked at the pop-up and then looked back at the situation. “My first mission? What are the question marks for?” Yu Quan looked at the time limit and the reward and felt it was worth it. It was possible he wouldn’t even need to get involved if the right opportunity came.

"Haaa... System, we've only just met." Yu Quan turned back around to face the commotion again. By now, the thief is long gone, the woman is still crying on the ground, and the random passerby has walked by the commotion to a nearby building and walked in. "Even so, it feels like you know me so well." Yu Quan said with greed in his eyes and a sly smile.

Note: The System is not at that level; you're just easy to predict.

“...”

Yu Quan decided to tail the “bystander” for his mission, but he didn’t understand what the point of their plan was. Why would they hand it off to a mortal instead of just letting the cultivator run with it? Wasn’t he stronger and faster?

"Clean your neck for me, thief!" Yù Quán heard out of nowhere. He looked at the source of the yell and saw a man dressed in black cultivator robes crouched beside the robbery victim.

BOOM

The man disappeared in a flash towards where the thief had run. Leaving the ground dented and crumbled where he once stood.

“Ah… so that's why... hopefully the thief's comrades burn incense for him.”

Su Chunhua was walking down the second alleyway with the pendant. She was about halfway to the meeting point, around five minutes from a decent payment. Su Chunhua was what she called a “freelance worker.” The Supreme Wolf Sect, a small sect known for its mercenary-like style of operation, had hired her multiple times since she was young. She was born and raised in Blossom Falls, which, despite its cheerful name, had a dark underbelly. Many forces in the nearest city have extended their reach into Blossom Falls for various reasons. Since the city has stationed and patrolling guards, it is challenging to conduct back alley business there. So, forces wanting to dabble in such dealings would go outside the city to the wilderness or nearby towns. Blossom Falls, being the perfect mix of close and isolated, is a favorite for many of these forces.

From selling information, stalking and tailing, and causing distractions, Su Chunhua has taken an accomplice role in many events. She didn't necessarily enjoy this, but it paid for a roof over her head and food on her table. This time, the Supreme Wolf Sect wanted her help transferring stolen goods. Initially, it didn't make sense why they would need her to move stolen goods, but she began to understand when she realized who they were stealing from. Yin Mengxia. Daughter of a very weak branch of the Yin Clan. Although the branch is very weak, only holding influence over Blossom Falls, it still has more power than a minor sect like the Supreme Wolf Sect.

Su Chunhua was hired to take the jade pendant a member stole and blend in with the crowd, safely delivering it to another member in an alleyway two streets over. The pendant was simple but tasteful. An oblong piece of jade with a detailed design of the moon etched into it. At the top was a hole where the rest of the necklace ran through. It had been snapped, but Su Chunhua had seen it on Yin Mengxia’s neck before it was stolen. The necklace had black beads, with the occasional white one, creating a pattern. She didn't know how important a jade pendant was to sacrifice the life of a sect member, but she would get paid with or without knowing this, so she might as well not worry about it. She continued down the alleyway, only slightly on edge, as this was one of the more straightforward jobs she had ever done.

“You know you left your buddy to die over there.”

Su Chunhua spun around to see a man in a plain white shirt and brown trousers. His long, black hair was pulled back into a long ponytail, swaying as he slowly walked from the alley she had just gone through.

Yu Quan thought she would try to run but wasn’t worried she could escape him. He had the [Star Gazing Eyes]. How could she escape his sight? Yù Quán's thoughts were interrupted by a fist right before his face. Yù Quán let out a yelp as he haphazardly moved out of the way of the punch. Yù Quán had no time for fun protagonist games; this woman wanted to fight. Before Yù Quán could recover from his shock, he was again met with a punch from her. This time, Yù Quán was slightly more prepared and moved to the outside of her punch. Taking advantage of the positioning, he put his leg out, and she tripped face-first into the wall.

Yu Quan jumped back into a readied stance. He hadn’t learned any martial arts, and this woman was coming at him so aggressively. He felt ill-prepared. The woman didn’t give Yu Quan any rest. She jumped back up and threw a kick straight to his neck. Yù Quán went to block her foot and met nothing but air. As he fell for the fake, the woman planted the foot she had just feinted with, spun around, and kicked out, pushing her heel right between Yù Quán's legs. Yù Quán gasped for air from the impact on his family jewels and fell to the ground. The woman spent no time loitering, planning to use this chance to escape the weird man. She didn't understand how he could have seen through the sleight of hand. "It should have been perfect," she thought. Maintaining her speed, she looked back to ensure the man was still there. Seeing him, she felt safe and whipped her head around to continue.

Thud

The woman ran into what felt like a brick wall... if brick was only slightly less hard and wasn't shaped like rectangles. Holding on to her face and looking up from the floor, she saw a man in black cultivator robes. "Shit..." she said defeatedly.
