CHAPTER 143
Chapter 143 Who Kept Everything Under Control? Luke’s car arrived at the mansion in ten minutes,
After getting into the car, Clarissa quickly dialed Damien’s number. This time, she was finally able to
reach him.
“What’s wrong? Miss me already?” Damien teased over the phone.
“Grandpa fell ill! We’re on the way to the hospital right now! It’s the same place you reserved his ward
before! Hurry up and go there!”
Damien’s tone turned serious as he responded, “I’ll be there.” Text property © Nôvel(D)ra/ma.Org.
After the three of them managed to send Grandpa Lawrence to the hospital. As the doctor wanted to
perform a check-up on him, they were forced to leave the ward.
Clarissa stood in the corridor like a skittish and nervous wreck of a person.
Meanwhile, Joseph went to settle the hospital bills.
Luke sat on a chair and waited for Damien to come. He wanted to show off the fact he had done
something spectacular today.
Soon, Damien arrived at the corridor in a hurry. Clarissa rushed toward him immediately. “I think
something’s wrong with Grandpa’s heart! The doctor’s trying to resuscitate him right now.”
“How’s he doing?” Damien’s expression was very cold when he noticed Joseph and Luke.
He immediately knew that those two helped send Grandpa Lawrence to the hospital.
No matter how furious he was at them, he could only suppress his temper and swallow his rage.
“I don’t know. I thought Grandpa’s heart problems weren’t that severe. How could it…” Clarissa looked
very confused as well. She was afraid Damien might blame her for not taking good care of Grandpa
Lawrence. “It’s all my fault! I didn’t take care of him well.”
Damien sat on the bench outside the ward. Joseph took the spot next to him.
Damien kept holding Clarissa’s hand comfortingly.
Soon, the doctor came out.
“How’s he doing?” Damien approached the doctor right away.
“You may visit him now. Ah, by the way…” The doctor looked at Damien. “The patient only wants you to
enter.”
Damien left Clarissa with some instructions before entering Grandpa Lawrence’s ward.
The elderly man lay on the hospital bed. He looked very healthy, since he wasn’t hooked to an IV
stand.
“How are you feeling, Grandpa?“ Damien sat next to his grandfather.
The latter opened his hand, revealing a capsule on his palm.
“Do you know what this pill is?” the elderly man asked.
“Yeah, it’s Betaloc. You take this medication regularly.”
“Open it up and see just how much drugs are in this capsule compared to a normal pill.” Grandpa
Lawrence took out another capsule and had Damien compare them.
Damien opened up the first capsule. The drugs contained were three times more potent than the
second pill.
“Betaloc is meant to treat heart failure, but you know very well that one can easily die of overdose.
Even if I die because of this, there won’t be traces of other drugs present in my body. No one will
suspect my death to be caused by murder. Do you know who gave this pill to me?” Grandpa Lawrence
asked
A deep frown appeared on Damien’s face. He instantly knew it was Madelynn.
“There’s a reason why I don’t like her. Since she wants to see this outcome, then I’ll give her what she
wants. As for what she’s trying to achieve by causing this, it’s for you to find out. There’s a possibility
she might be the one behind Clary’s inability to reach 911. Not to mention, your phone line was busy
when she tried to reach you. If I died from this incident, Clary would be burdened with responsibilities
that would tie her to my death. She was also the one who tried to keep everything under control. If not
for her, the consequences would be dire. It’s a good thing I kept my guard up against Madelynn. That
woman has a vile nature, Damien.”
Damien looked at Grandpa Lawrence. A thought crossed his mind. ‘Does Grandpa know about the
marriage contract this whole time? Is he trying to use Madelynn’s plan to force me to get rid of the
contract?’
Madelynn wanted nothing more than to achieve her goal. Unfortunately for her, it was just wishful
thinking on her part. Once Grandpa Lawrence was dead, Damien and Clarissa’s contract would have
come to an end, leading to them getting divorced.
“Thank goodness you’re doing fine, Grandpa.”
“Damien. I’ve been studying my whole life, and I’ve come this far. You can’t fool me.” After that,
Grandpa Lawrence closed his eyes and rested.
When Damien left the ward, Clarissa grabbed his arm anxiously and asked, “Is Grandpa okay?”
“Don’t worry, he’s fine.” The thought of Clarissa almost falling into Madelynn’s trap softened his heart.
Thus, he spoke to her very gently.
“Whew!” Clarissa was finally able to relax as she let out a huge sigh of relief.
“Is Gramps all right?” Luke asked.
“Yeah. He’s fine, don’t worry.” Damien turned to cast a complicated look at Joseph.
“Well then, Mr. Lawrence. We’ll be taking our leave.” Joseph patted Luke’s shoulder. Then, they left the
hospital.
