Chapter 7: Negotiations

Chapter 7: Negotiations

Alex and Kim took a break after completion of shooting. It's Sunday and Kim was preparing lunch for them. Alex was solving the cross-word puzzle. Then they suddenly heard a car stopping in front of the house.

Kim went to see who it was. After  2 minutes Alex saw a woman in her early 30's . She was a brunette and from her appearance Alex can see she was in a high-powered position in a company and he guessed it was a film company.

"Hello Mr. King,  my name is Dawn Leslie Steel and I am Vice President of production in Paramount Pictures." she intoduced herself.

"Nice to meet you Miss Dawn, just Alex please and can I call you Leslie?." Alex said with a smile.

After the pleasantries, Leslie directly broached the subject. " Alex I read your short story collection and I also saw a script sent to us based on a story in it. So we want to buy the script "HOME ALONE"."

Alex thought about for a while and said "What was the budget fot he film?"

Leslie brows wrinkled and she replied, " $7 million."

Alex tapped his fingers on arm chair for a moment and said "No remuneration for script. We will invest $1.5 million for 13% profits and  I will keep copyright ."

Leslie was surprised as it was a diadvantageous conditon to Alex. But she didn't say it, as she was a business woman. "Alex, can I use your phone?"

Alex nodded and Kim showed her the way. Alex thought about Leslie and slightly remembered her as a well known figure in hollywood. She approved  films such as "Flash Dance", "Fatal Attraction","Top Gun", "Beverly Hills Cop" etc. She was the first woman studio head in Hollywood by becoming the president of "COLUMBIA Pictures" in 1987.

Alex's thoughts are interrupted as Leslie came back. She contacted higher-ups and they gave the green signal but they also put out a condition." They learned that you starred in "E.T." and want you star in the role of Kevin."

Alex was surprised . He thought it was a one time deal with Steven but the fate didn't think so. And Alex also want to taste that experience once more. So he nodded.

Their lawyers drew contracts and Alex got another 2% profit sharing as his actor fee.

After that Alex has given another script he had written to Leslie to read and tell her opinion and he stated firmly that this script was written for Kim Basinger. Only if she was chosen as the star in the movie otherwise he wouldn't sell the script. The script was named "Pretty Woman". Leslie said that she will read it.

Kim was not satisfied with his decision as it would have profited him to simply sell the script.

Alex simply said, "Kim we are family. Ofcourse , I will help you."

Kim simply tousled his hair with a slight sheen of tears in her eyes.

For the role of bandit Harry Lime he recommended "Joe Pesci" as he was the original actor and he was not famous yet. As for the role of Marv he recommended  Dan Aykroyd. The shooting was scheduled to start in August.

Time flew by and it was July 3rd, the day before the release of E.T. Although he knew the result but still he was anxious of what would happen because of the butterfly-effect.
