Chapter 18: Ballet Billy Elliot

Chapter 18: Ballet Billy Elliot

Lucas: I guess everybody has their own idea of fun. Some people go to football games. Other people do less superficial things.

Maggie: Look, just because you don't approve of something, doesn't mean other people don't have a right to enjoy it. You're in the band aren't you?

Lucas: Yeah?

Maggie: So?

Lucas: So?

Maggie: So the band goes to football games!

Lucas: We're totally different!

Maggie: Why?

Lucas: Because the band does not have fun there!

Ben: Did you hear about Lucas? It's suicide!

Rena: What do you mean?

Ben: He's gone out for the football team!

(Rena is a girl having crush on Lucas)

Audience laughed loudly at the dialogues in the film. "Lucas" film's strength lies on it's witty dialogues and Alex delivered them brilliantly.

(In another scene where the jocks try to bully Lucas):

Bruno: Leukoplakia! They actually found a jock strap to fit you? Somebody should stop by home ec. tomorrow to pick up a thimble. Or maybe a thimble is too big. How about a contact lens and a band aid?

Lucas: Are you referring to the size of my penis?

Bruno: Yeah, I am.

Lucas: With a flaccid penis, it's the number of folds that count. Besides, I'm not semi-erect like some of you guys here.

Bruno: What did you say?

Lucas: A University of Chicago study. You can tell the fags in a warm shower by who's got the longest dong. Hey, yours seems to be growing even now.

Bruno: The hell it is!

Lucas: It IS, look!

There was another burst of deep loud hearty laughter coming from the audience at somewhat crude but clever joke. It was Alex's first film using the vulgar language but the audience seem to accept it.

Coach: Hear me good, you pissant! Because I'm only going to tell you one more time.

Lucas: Don't you call me that! Don't you call me a pissant, you dumb fucking jock!

Coach: What'd you say?

Lucas: You heard me, pencil-brain! I mean, who are we kidding here, who is the pissant? The second-rate coach of a third rate team or me?

Maggie: You know how wonderful you are? Lucas: Yeah, but it doesn't turn you on, does it? Maggie: Lucas, we're just friends.

Maggie: What am I going to do with you? Lucas: [Heartbroken, he gets up and goes to the nest] Go away. Go. [eyes her] Leave! LEAVE!! GO!! GO AWAY!!!

Audience felt the pain of Lucas and understood it. It only happens when they care enough about the character.

The next day, Lucas, still reeling, removes his helmet during his first football game (the uniform was too big for him) and is severely injured, requiring hospitalization. Maggie, Cappie, and Rina attempt to contact Lucas' parents, though Maggie discovers that she does not know Lucas as well as she thought she did. Correcting Maggie's misguided impression that Lucas lives in a large luxurious house she has seen him at several times before, Rina shows the pair that Lucas lives in a dilapidated trailer with his alcoholic father and works as a gardener at the large house where Maggie had visited him previously.

Meanwhile, Lucas' schoolmates hold a vigil in the hospital for him as he recuperates. Maggie visits Lucas' room that evening and sternly tells him never to play football again. Lucas promises, and the two reconcile, picking up their close friendship where they left off. They speculate as to where they will be when the locusts return seventeen years later, with locusts being one of the many scientific things Lucas introduced Maggie to during their summer together; both express the hope that they will still be friends when the locusts return again.

Lucas returns to school a short time later, with schoolmates all casting surprised looks at him as he walks through the hall. Many talk amongst themselves about what he did on the football field, and how the jocks at school likely have it out for him now. Upon reaching his locker, he finds Bruno and Spike there waiting for him. Thinking it'll just be the same old story, Lucas tries to ignore them as he opens his locker. Inside is a varsity letter jacket, emblazoned with Lucas' name and number (72) on the back. As Lucas takes it out in shock, Bruno starts the "slow clap", and the entire hallway starts applauding. Maggie, Cappie, and Rina are there, too, leading the applause as Lucas raises his arms triumphantly and smiles.

* It's about falling in love. For the first time.

* There's nothing wrong with being different.

* A boy that just won't be beaten.

These are the taglines of the film Lucas. The Critics gave good reviews

Roger Ebert gave the film 4 out of 4 stars, calling it a film "about teenagers who are looking how to be good with each other, to care, and not simply to be filled with egotism, lust and selfishness, which is all most Hollywood movies think teenagers can experience".

Walter Goodman of NY Times praising Alex's performance wrote, "Behind his big eyeglasses, Alex King, playing Lucas, is like the young Woody Allens who sometimes pop up in Woody Allen movies. (In a nice play on movie conventions, he takes off his glasses in preparation for a love scene.) He's a romantic smart aleck, an innocent intellectual. He dismisses as ''superficial'' the world that rejects him and that he longs to join. "

"Lucas" grossed $4.9 million in the weekend, the lowest weekend gross of Alex's career but still well above the expectations as it was released in just 700 theatres. AMC and Regal increased 200 theatres each after the weekend bringing the theatre count to 1100.

By the end of first week "Lucas" grossed $10.3 million defying all the expectations. If all goes well it may cross the $100 million mark in the North America. It opened in the #2 place behind "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan".

................................

After the release of "Lucas" Alex was once again busy with the dubbing and post production work of "Empire of the Sun". After finishing the work he contacted "Disney" and asked if they are interested in the new script he wrote.

The reason Alex contacted Disney was because to get a strong backer for the Phoenix Studios. The President of the Walt Disney Studios was Ron William Miller, son-in-law of Walt Disney. In previous life Ron in 1983 became CEO but ousted from the company in 1984. Even in 1982 Ron was unsure of his position and he need a big hit to gain a footing in the company. Ron thinks Alex maybe his savior.

Ron and Alex met at a restaurant to discuss the cooperation. Ron read the script "Billy Elliot" and he was quite satisfied with it. "Billy Elliot" was the type of film that Disnay was famous for producing.

"Mr.Miller are you interested in the copyright of the "Home Alone" series?" Alex asked suddenly.

Ron Miller was shocked at the question. Ofcourse he was interested, it was a great series especially fot the kids, who are the Disney target audience.

"What do you want in exchange?" Ron Miller asked with doubts in his heart.

"Mr. Miller I am giving it to you as a token of friendship for just $1 million. You need it right now." Alex said with a calm voice.

Ron was shocked and saw Alex in a new light. Ron listened that he was a genius and he didn't know how right those words are until now. Ron simply nodded and accepted his offer.

Alex presented two more scripts named "The Mighty Ducks" and "Honey, I Shrunk the Kids" and left with a smile as Ron was in a state of daze. Alex know Ron will like the films and they are sure hits spawing the sequels. Ron will be busy the next two years.
