Chapter 33: Breaking Record

Chapter 33: Breaking Record

Matthew Perry was auditioning fot the role of bookish and sensitive Gordie. In fact the whole story explained throught the view of Gordie and he had the most scenes with Chris played by Alex. Being the kids it's natural for them wanting to be the center of attention.

Though Matthew was delivering his lines with precision there's something missing. After thinking a long time Alex made Matthew read the part of puppy-fat Vern. Though Alex was sure that they can find suitable actors for Gordie and Teddy he was not so sure about Vern. Vern was the most innocent and gullible of the gang thinking he was smart.

Though Matthew was not happy with the change but read the lines. Alex was sure that Matthew was most suitable for the role of Vern.

"Matthew, would you play the role of Vern." Alex asked Matthew in secret.

"But, Vern was fat and I don't like being fat." Matthew said with depressing expression.

"Matthew, you are perfect for the part. You don't have to be fat, make-up team will take care of it." seeing his idol requesting him like that Matthew nodded.

The auditions continued until afternoon but still couldn't find the suitable actor for Gordie and Teddy.

After lunch, the auditions continued.

This time it was Anthony Michael Hall. Alex remembered Anthony for his geek roles in the films in 1980s. He was everybody's favourite geek in 1980s.

Even before starting the audition Alex decided to cast Anthony in the role of "Teddy" and Anthony didn't disappoint Alex.

"Terry what do you think?" Alex asked Terry.

Terry nodded in approval. Anthony already appeared in commercials and just last year he acted in the hit "Six Pack".

Now the only remaining role is Gordie. Alex thought it would be the most easiest role to find an actor. Gordie was the most normal of the batch and he don't have any quirks either. But none of the actors were quite upto the standards.

After an entire day Alex found the actor perfect for the role. Edward Norton. He was quite talented for his age and upon further investigation found out that Edward along with his brother studied acting in the camp Pasquaney.

After a tiring day the most important casting process was done.

............................................

'Miami Vice' and 'Who wants to be a Millionaire?' shows were launched on ABC network and the ratings were high. Compared to NBC and CBS ABC network was weaker because they don't have top quality shows in the prime time.

Miami Vice's music, photography and its depiction of pop culture of 80s made it popular among young audiences. Product placement cost was high compared to other shows. Though there was criticism about gloryfying the violence.

People were just recovering from the recession and the show 'Who wants to be a Millionaire ?' was perfect to attract the viewers. As long as you were smart and with a little bit of luck you can earn the amount of money, that an average american couldn't earn in his lifetime.

ABC picked up the both shows for the full season .

..............................................

On February 11,1983 Alex's new film "Billy Elliot" landed on 1,325 american theatres. February was a dump month, meaning the box office in this period was low and the movies that don't want to face competition were dumped in this month.

But "Billy Elliot" was released in this month to cash Alex's Oscar nomination popularity.

And their decision proved right "Billy Elliot" grossed $11 million breaking the February box office records.
