Chapter 42: Great Opportunity

Chapter 42: Great Opportunity

"Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is a classic film. It made a significant impact in the popular culture and was considered as one of the best films made about teens along with "The Breakfast Club".

Both films were written and directed by 'John Hughes', the original writer of 'Home Alone 1 & 1'. John Hughes contacted Phoenix Studios last year for the investmest to his film 'The Breakfast Club'. Alex readily agreed to all of his conditions. It was Alex's way of compensation for stealing his idea.

With the success of  'The Breakfast Club' John Hughes became a hot commodity and all the studios are interested to produce his next film. But he gave the preference to Phoenix studios to express his gratitude. John also knows that casting Alex as Ferris will increase the commercial factor for the film.

But Alex was not naive to think that he can compete with the 'Big Seven' studios consisting Warner Bros., Universal, Paramount, 20th Century Fox, Columbia, MGM and The Walt Disney Company.

So, Alex co-operates with Disney, Paramount and Warner Bros. mainly in exchange for their support in distributing his films in overseas and their connections.

'Ferris Bueller's Day Off' is the joint production of Paramount and Phoenix Studios. Dawn Steel, the one who contacted Alex for 'Home Alone' is now the president of production at Paramount. Because of her association with Alex, she was considered as valuable asset in Paramount.

"Alex, if this script was made into film , we can face severe backlash from feminists." Dawn 'Leslie' Steel said after finished reading the script.

"Leslie, I don't care about feminists. And if there was a backlash its a free publicity anyway. If you are not interested Phoenix Studios will produce it independently." Alex said coolly. Alex knew she won't reject it. Nobody in Hollywood is a fool to reject the script written by Alex.

The script Alex referred to is "The Fatal Attraction". It is based on a short film written by 'James Dearden' for British Television. In original timeline James Dearden wrote the script for the film as well. But Alex purchased the movie rights from him and reaorganized the script to the movie version.

For the role of the Iconic Villain role 'Alexanda 'Alex' Forrest'  Alex already chose Kim Basinger. Alex's idea is to make Kim win the Oscar Best actress with this role.

Dawn Steel without hesitation agreed to produce this film. But it won't go into the production until September which is fine with Alex as Kim has yet to finish her other commitments.

She is starring in "Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home" as the love interset of Captain James T. Kirk. and the title role in the "Peggy Sue got married".

Alex's paycheck for a film has increased to $9 million which most of the studios were happy to pay. But "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" was a joint production and his salary exceeds the production budget. Alex couldn't reduce his paycheck because it is not a independent project of Phoenix Studios. So both studios had to pay $4.5 million each to Alex.

To reduce costs Alex made a deal with Ferrari as a product placement in the film for $1 million. In the place of $4.5 million paycheck Alex got 10% profits from Paramount.

Alex and Robert Downey are talking in the shooting break when Alex got a call from 'Tom Cruise' about a role. Alex agreed to meet him for a coffee after the completio of  day's work.

"Who's that?" Robert assked curiosly.

"Tom Cruise. You should have heard about him." Alex said preparing for the next shot.

"Yes, I've heard of him. I think it was you who recommended him for that film 'Risky Business' right?"

Alex nodded in affirmation. It grossed just above $90 million dollars making Tom's career. But he still need another  hit to establish his status as a star.

The film that made Tom Cruise a Super Star was 'Top Gun'...

Alex's thoughts froze at the 'Top Gun'. Its original release is in 1986 and Alex didn't hear a single news about 'Top Gun'. What happened? Alex tried to remember the history of 'Top Gun'.

The primary inspiration for the film was the article "Top Guns" by Ehud Yonay, from the May 1983 issue of California magazine. Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, the producers of the film, reading the article wanted to make a film about the life of fighter pilots. Looks like somebody didn't read the article.

Its a great opporunity and Alex  already started making plans for this film. But it will take atleast two years as Alex's age was not suitable for the role.

As for Tom Cruise, Alex will make sure that he becomes a superstar.
