John Daly is feeling nervous as he sat across Alex. They met at John Daly's office to dicuss about Tom's role in 'Platoon'. The film's director 'Oliver Stone' may prove to be a problem but John Daly still agreed to cast Tom Cruise in the lead role. But there is a condition. Alex has to star in one of their films.
So, here they are now , with Alex going through the scripts and John Daly looking nervously at him. After a long time Alex raised his head and said "When does this film going on the floors ?"
John Daly looked at title of the script and his brows tightened. Its a sports film called "Hoosiers" about a small town basketball team going on to win the state championship.
Its a low budget film and there is no suitable role for a star like Alex, even though its about a highschool basketball team. John was hoping to use this opportunity to elevate the status of Hemdale Pictures but he still kept his thoughts to himself and answered, "Just waiting for a suitable actor to play the ace player in the movie."
Alex remembered that the shooting of this film should have completed by now. But seems like this time it got delayed. Alex watched this film "Hoosiers". It is often considered as one of the best sports films.
Americn Film Institute (AFI) listed the film as
* AFI's 100 Years...100 Cheers - #13
* AFI's 10 Top 10 - #4 Sports Film
But Alex always felt that there was something lacking in the film. Alex looked at John and said, "Is it possible to make changes to the script ?"
John Daly looked worried "Is it that bad ?"
"No, no. It's good. Very good. Critics are going to love it."
John is confused now "Then why change it?"
"But we are not making the movies for critics."
Alex is the type of person who thinks that the movie which gains more popularity among the common audience is a good movie. Though there were sometimes that a bad movie gets good box office results but it will be forgotten by audience in the flow of time. Though "Hoosiers" was a good movie but it was just a moderate success.
"The relations between coach and the players is not shown as strong enough. And the star player Jimmy Chitwood stops playing because the former coach who died was like a father figure to him. We can establish that relation between the new coach and Jimmy by adding some scenes."
John Daly is listening with utmost attention. John heard rumours that Alex had a knack for improvising the scripts and now he is noting every suggestion to discuss it with the writer 'Angelo Pizzo'.
"Audience love the intense drama and we have to deliver it. It is written here that the coach moved to small town because he struck one of his star players and lost his coaching job. Make it possible that finals of State Championship is between the coach's former team and the present team. It makes the stakes seem high to the audience."
John heard all his suggestions and thought that even without Alex starring in it had the chance to be a big hit.
"Even if the writer would't agree to change the script, I will still honor our agreement. Just contact my lawyer Ethan Crane for the details." Alex said raising from the chair.
John is happy that Alex agreed star in the film but suddenly remembered Alex's salary and his spirits were down. $9.5 million was not a small amount.
Alex saw John's expression and laughed out loud. "Don't worry. I don't need salary but I'll take 25% profits."
John was okay with that condition and dialled his lawyer to draw a contract.
..............................................
Alex returned to shooting of "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" after signing the contract. The filming shifted to Chicago as director John Hughes said in his own words: 'A lot of Ferris is my love letter to the city of Chicago.'
Though Alex is friendly with all the members in the shooting he always felt that they are wary of him. Alex and Robert Downey discussed this matter in a club after a day of shooting.
"Ofcourse, they will be afraid of you. Your kindness is a privilige that you are giving it to them. But for them its a luxury to accept that privilige. With a simple word you can make them fired. Powerful men can only be friends with their equals or the madmen."
Alex laughed at that but agreed with Downey in his heart. They are sitting in the VIP section of the club observing the dancing crowd. Alex then suddenly saw an old friend.
Alex's pulse quickened seeing this friend. It's been three years and she is still as beautiful as ever. "Monica Bellucci".
