Chapter 038: Escape

Chapter 038: Escape

Above Sol City one of the four Inter-World Spaceships was floating, ready on standby. Another one was right above Noche City, the third one was above the ocean, and the fourth one was above the mountains. The spaceships were warming up and the flow of Magical Energy into the Magic Circles all throughout the ship was slowly building up. The team effort had paid off and the fateful day when the remaining survivors would escape to Earth had finally come. After a gruesome five months of destruction in Lunaria, Jin-Woo wiped out all but the 40 million Lunarians who were evacuated onto the spaceships. There was no sign of Jin-Woo, but they knew he could show up any moment. Everyone was praying for the final preparation before takeoff to be done faster. The spaceships had coordinated an effort of when each one would leave since the Magic Circles all had the same transportation coordinates, but there was not enough time to further research of different coordinates for each spaceship. Oliver, Ayano, and Colonel Miyamoto were inside the bridge of the spaceship hovering above Sol City; they were in contact with all the other spaceships. Professor Su had taken charge of the spaceship hovering above Noche City.

“Damn it, he is here!” Colonel Miyamoto said. “We lost contact with the third spaceship!”

“This can’t be!” Oliver had an expression full of terror.

“It seems we won’t be able to escape Jin-Woo!” Colonel Miyamoto punched his chair’s arm rest in frustration. “We just need a little more time to escape!”

“Yichen, you guys go first. Let’s start putting the spaceships on overdrive, we need to make the Magical Energy Flow run faster throughout the spaceships for the Magic Circles to be fed.” Ayano commanded as she began pressing a sequence of buttons.

“I’ll do as you say!” Professor Su answered. “We lost the fourth spaceship!”

“Jin-Woo you monster!! You just killed 20 million people in those spaceships!” Colonel Miyamoto yelled. “There are only 20 million people left, are we going to make it before he kills us all?”

“Colonel Miyamoto, please take care of Hajin!” Oliver said with a determined expression.

“What do you mean, Oliver!? Why would I need to take care of your younger brother!? He already has you!” Colonel Kenta questioned with a concerned tone. Then his face became full of dread. “You can’t Oliver! You can’t do that! You must not!”

“Oliver, you don’t mean!?” Ayano asked with an expression full of dread. “What am I supposed to tell Aria!? Aren’t you two getting married soon!?”

“I must confront him. He’ll give me a chance to talk to him. If anyone else confronts Jin-Woo, they will be swiftly killed.” Oliver explained. “This time, I won’t fail! I won’t let Jin-Woo succeed!”

“There has to be another way, Oliver!!” Ayano started crying. “We can send unmanned Moon Units to confront him!”

“That won’t do anything, and you know it!” Oliver said somberly. “Mother-in-law please tell Aria that I love her very much and that I am sorry!”

“Why am I so powerless? You, young ones, shouldn't have to do this!” Kenta said as tears rolled down his face. “Oliver, this is your last mission. Please make sure that the last two spaceships can escape to Earth!”

“Yes, sir! And thank you for everything!” Oliver saluted before running out of the bridge. Oliver desperately tried to find Nicole and after a few seconds he spotted her near the hangar. “Nicole, please give me the key fob to your Moon Unit!”

“Why would I do that!? Didn’t I tell you last time I wouldn’t do anything else for you!?” Nicole glared at Oliver.

“Please Nicole! I need to stop him!!” Oliver pleaded. “That’s the only way!”

“You don’t mean! NO!! NO!! There must be another way! Think of something else! Please, you're a genius!” Nicole became desperate as she looked at Oliver’s determined expression. “You broke my heart to be with Aria and now you’re going to leave her alone!”

“NICOLE! PLEASE! It’s the only way!” Oliver continued his pleading.

“I … I …” Nicole handed her Moon Unit’s key fob to Oliver. She fell to her knees and started crying as she saw Oliver running towards her Moon Unit at full speed.

Oliver quickly entered the Moon Unit’s cockpit. He turned on the Moon Unit and began to breathe in and breathe out, trying to calm himself down. As he reached the Moon Unit's controls Oliver could see his hands shaking. He pushed through and began piloting the Moon Unit out of the spaceship. As he descended into Sol City, Oliver gazed at the spaceship. A bittersweet smile spread across his face as he thought about Aria. After taking a moment to compose himself, Oliver headed straight for the mall where he found Jin-Woo in the parking lot.

“I knew you would come, Oliver!” Jin-Woo said. “As I told you last time, we’re now enemies!”

“Jin-Woo! This is it!” Oliver said as he piloted the Moon Unit, taking out its sword and pointing it at Jin-Woo. “I’m going all out!”

“Bring it on! I don’t care whether you fight in a Moon Unit or not! You don’t have the power to defeat me!” Jin-Woo said as he made an Ice Sword using Ice Magic. “See, I have more control over Magic!”

“Aren’t you too proud of something an average soldier can do!?” Oliver mocked as he slashed at Jin-Woo.

“Considering I was the only Magicless human not too long ago; this is impressive wouldn’t you say!?” Jin-Woo responded as he blocked Oliver’s attack. “I have this much control in less than a year of using Magic!”

Oliver and Jin-Woo slashed and blocked and went back and forth for a few minutes. The Moon Unit’s sword eventually broke, and Jin-Woo just stood staring with a mocking smile.

“Is that all you can do, Oliver? I told you, not even a Moon Unit was enough!” Jin-Woo said. “Use the Elemental Gun equipped on the Moon Unit, I believe it should be more powerful than the one you gave me. I want to see how I fare against the weapon you made.”

“I’ll be taking you up on that offer!” Oliver said. Suddenly a Fire Blast hit Jin-Woo straight on. Oliver was surprised and looked from where the Fire Blast had come from and saw Aria’s Moon Unit.

“Damn it! That hurt more than expected, but it was nothing serious.” Jin-Woo said as he recovered from the blast. “Sneak attacks really do hurt more!”

“Oliver! You idiot!” Oliver could hear Aria’s voice coming from her Moon Unit. He then saw a communication request on the Moon Unit’s display and accepted. He could see Aria’s angry expression. “Why are you abandoning me? Aren’t we a couple?”

“Aria! Why are you here!? Go back to the spaceship, NOW!” Oliver scolded Aria.

“No, I’ll stay by your side!” Aria responded. “I won’t abandon you! I’ll always be by your side! You’re my fiancé, so I won’t be leaving you alone to confront Jin-Woo!”

“So, you two finally got engaged! I must give you my congratulations! I always knew you two were made for each other!” Jin-Woo said with a smile. “But no matter how many go against me, I’ll always come out on top!”

Oliver and Aria pointed the Moon Unit’s Elemental Guns at Jin-Woo. Jin-Woo began laughing maniacally as he saw his former friends trying to stop him. He smiled and pointed his Ice Sword at the two Moon Units.
