Arc 1 Finale - F.A.T.E (PT 3)

Now, you might be asking. "Where's Oliver?". Well the answer to that was simple. He was moping on the second floor balcony like the emo brat he was.

Looking at his golden badge with an engraving of a peony, Oliver couldn't help but feel a bit ticked off.

"Even after all that... Only B tier? Damnit... Mr Sieg told me it's because he told the higher ups it was a group effort... Still what did I do all that for... I didn't get any ‘wow you're so cool’s’ from anyone..." Oliver said out loud.

"Well I think you're pretty cool" Katherine said leaning against the balcony's marble railings.

Oliver perked up by her sudden arrival - yelling at her as he asked why she loved sneaking up on him.

"Honestly it's just my hobby. It's really cute seeing you get all scared" Katherine said, laughing a bit.

Oliver looked away, trying to hide the redness on his face. She noticed this, and like always, she continued to tease him.

"Stop! It's embarrassing geez..." Oliver said, hiding his face between his arms.

Katherine chuckled before looking at the scenery.

"You know, it's a hassle to use an escalator everyday to get to work, but having the headquarters on this mountain is really nice sometimes... I love seeing this beautiful scene everyday" Katherine said, smiling at the setting sun.

Oliver peaked his head up, looking at her face.

"Yeah me too" Oliver said, the redness increasing.

Turning to look at the sunset, Oliver gripped his badge tightly.

"Hey can I ask you something?"

Turning to face him, Katherine tilted her head and smiled.

"Go ahead"

Loosening his grip on his badge Oliver began looking down. He watched as operator's from all shapes and sizes walked around the facility. Some of them looked happy, some of them looked sad, and most just looked tired. For most of his life he wanted to get like them, and now that he was, he felt a bit empty.

"Have you ever worked hard to get something... And once you got it, you feel nothing? Like sure I got the thing but... What's next?" Oliver asked, burying his head back into his arms.

Katherine paused for a moment to truly think about his question. After a while she responded by pinching the back of Oliver's neck. This jolted him up as he looked at her angrily.

"What was that for?!" Oliver asked, rubbing the back of his neck.

"Well I needed to get your attention didn't I?" Katherine smiled.

Oliver rolled his eyes before giving her his full attention.

"Great, now to answer your question, yes. Yes I have. Many times actually." Katherine explained.

"Then you must know how it feels right? Like... Like everything wasn't worth it... Like you wanna go back to the time before you got it" Oliver said.

Katherine looked out at the moon which had just risen, a look of contemplation on her face.

"Yeah... Especially when what you got is less than what you expected..." Katherine added.

The two sat in silence before Oliver began laughing. This creeped Katherine out, wondering if he was some kind of psycho.

"Sorry! It's just... It's just nice being able to talk to someone who gets me. I feel like I can be myself around you! Sometimes I feel like if I show others the real me, they'll be disgusted..." Oliver says, fidgeting with his badge.

Hearing this, Katherine lowered her head down.

"You too huh...?" Katherine said, incredibly quietly.

It was so quiet that Oliver couldn't hear her. He asked her to repeat herself, but she just brushed it off by making a joke.

"Nothing, I just have a stomach ache." She laughed.

This didn't make Oliver laugh though. It actually made him panic. He tried to leave to get Sieg, but she stopped him.

"It was a joke, dumbass" Katherine said, flattered but also slightly annoyed.

Oliver's face turned red from embarrassment as he began pulling his hair.

"Argh I'm so stupid!"

This made Katherine chuckle before leaning over the railing. She rested her chin on her hand, as she began to look at the moon again. This time, with jealousy.

"Sometimes I wish I could live on the moon like Princess Kaguya. I could look down on everyone on earth while I live peacefully all by myself. Also everyone would be forced to look at me when they look at the moon" Katherine said, proudly.

Most would cringe at her narcissism, but to Oliver, it was quite endearing. Standing over the balcony beside her, he put his hand in his pockets and looked at the moon as well.

"Wouldn't living on the moon be lonely though? Also what would you eat?" Oliver asked.

"Moon cheese" she answered, pointing a finger gun at him.

He chuckled, making her smirk. Standing up, Katherine crossed her arms and closed her eyes as she began imagining what it would be like to live on the moon.

"But yeah it's way too lonely. I need at least one person to look at me otherwise I might wither away. Although if a flower withers away when nobody's looking, does it really wither?" She said, holding her chin.

Oliver was actually starting to get weirded out by her questions, but not in a bad way. Though he couldn't help but give her a quick confused glare before looking back at the moon. This embarrassed Katherine, realising that she showed him a bit of her real self.

"Shit... Now he's gonna hate me for sure..." Was what Katherine thought.

Instead however, Oliver reached his hand out to the moon before clenching it tightly.

"Then how bout we fly to the moon together? That way even if you wither, I'll be there to watch" Oliver said, smiling.

Katherine stared at him for a moment, a slight blush forming on her face. Her staring caused him to get embarrassed, believing that she was secretly judging him.

"W- wait no that sounds super weird! I'm so sorry! I should just shut up! You can slap me if you want!" Oliver says, frantically trying to not look like a creep.

However, she didn't slap him, instead she began laughing.... But this time it was different. Before this, her laughter sounded forced or at least it was trying to mimic genuine laughter. To explain what her laughter sounded like, it would be like eating garlic smothered in chocolate. You mostly taste the chocolate, but underneath the bittersweet richness is a sharp painful flavour that wouldn’t go away no matter how much sweetness you disguised it with. However this time, it sounded like a honey drenched melody. The two sat in silence for a moment, just enjoying each other's company. Though their peaceful time would be interrupted by the sound of a fuse blowing. Many fuses actually. The two immediately started to panic, trying to run back inside, however the glass door started to jam.

"Shit shit shit! I just got this promotion! I don't wanna die!!" Katherine said, whining a bit.

"Please, I'm sorry for complaining about my rank! I promise I won't do it again!" Oliver said, pulling on the door frantically.

As the two slowly accept the fact that they're probably gonna die, they both relent their efforts. Sighing audibly, Katherine leaned her back against the railing. Closing her eyes, she soon heard the sound of the explosion. However, she didn't die. At least she thought she probably didn't die. Opening her eyes, she saw Oliver's wide eyes, and the reflection of fireworks in his left eye. Seeing the child-like wonder his face was making, the sight made her blush a bit. After smiling to herself, she walked up to him, holding his face as she brushed his bangs away from his right eye.

"There… I can see the fireworks better now"

The two sat in silence, the sounds of fireworks exploding filling the dead air. The two looked at each other, not sure what to say. In Oliver's mind, he was thinking "ahrhrhegehhee what the hell? What's going on? Is this a dream? Probably? Why does she smell good? Wait, why am I focusing on her smell? Fuck fuck fuck!!!". Meanwhile in Katherine's, she was more like "Why the hell did I say that?!! I can see the fireworks better now? What kinda cringe line is that? I should've just stayed in bed! Daddddd come help me!!!! I wanna die... But his skin is so soft my goodness".

This would probably go on for eternity, if not for the sound of Oliver's phone buzzing. The two snapped out of their trance, both sighing in relief. They both made sure to keep a good distance away from each other, so as to not cause anymore embarrassing situations. As Oliver took his phone out, Katherine asked who messaged him.

"Oh it's from Mr Sieg..." Oliver said as he began reading the text.

"Huh he really did come to save me?!" Katherine exclaimed in shock.

This shocked Oliver for a bit, turning his attention to her once again.

"E- excuse me?" Oliver retorted.

Katherine waved dismissively, telling him to just read the text as it was probably more important. Sighing a bit, Oliver began to reread the message.

"Olie Olie! Where are you (๑﹏๑//)? I need to tell you about that thing. ૮₍ ˶•⤙•˶ ₎ა"

"Your dad sends really cute texts..." Oliver blurted out.

Katherine punched him in the shoulder causing him to yelp a bit. She puffed her cheeks a bit, making Oliver feel bad.

"Damn you're the one who punched me and I'm the one who feels bad... You're extremely dangerous to be around…" Oliver said, sweating.

"Just respond already" Katherine said, crossing her arms.

Oliver messaged Sieg the location, and after a while he arrived. Seeing Katherine with him, Sieg gave Oliver the most dirty look a human could give to another person.

"What were you doing here with my daughter?" Sieg asked. Despite having a smile on his face, it wasn't a smile of happiness nor satisfaction. It was a smile of pure unadulterated rage.

Oliver gulped before explaining the situation. Even after learning that Katherine was the one who snuck up on him, Sieg still gave him a dirty look.

"What do you want from me?!" Oliver yelled, sobbing a bit out of fear.

Sieg rolled his eyes before turning to Katherine. He gave her a knowing look, letting her know to leave. Once she was gone, Sieg cleared his throat.

"Well... A certain someone wants to have dinner with you and Olivia. I've already told her so don't worry. Also, 'It's just a simple lunch so don't overdress', is what he told me, but that man wears suits as his casual wear... So at least put on something a bit formal." Sieg explained.

Oliver nodded, but then began scratching his head.

"Couldn't you have told me this over text though?" Oliver said.

Sieg once again rolled his eyes but this time he began massaging his temples.

"It would be easier to say yes. But I swear that man's life goal is to make my life harder.... You see the man who wants to see you is extremely cautious. He doesn't like being traced, so he made me tell you in person to avoid anything of the sorts. That's why he also gave me this..." Sieg said as he handed Oliver an invitation letter.

Oliver took it, imagining it a little. It was a small rectangular sealed envelope that was mostly black, say for the red wax seal and golden trimmings. Naturally, Oliver tried to open it, however Sieg stopped him.

"Woah woah woah easy there. That thing has the ability to immediately transport the holder to a designated location in space after being opened. It's basically the same technology as an attachment unit; however instead of using Ulteirs, we use a special ritual to imbue the teleporting ability onto it." Sieg explained.

Oliver nodded, but then asked him when he should open it then.

"No later than 2:30. That man really loves being punctual. Huh he's actually the complete opposite of you" Sieg commented, holding his chin.

Oliver felt a bit hurt by his comment as he's been coming to work extra early recently.

"That hurts Mr Sieg..." Oliver said, sniffling.

"That's what you get for trying to hit on my daughter..." Sieg retorted.

"It wasn't like that I swear!" Oliver yelled defensively.

Sieg scoffed before turning around. Just before he left, he smiled a bit.

"Well if it's you then... I guess it wouldn't be so bad" Sieg said as he opened the door.

Oliver grinned widely, making an extremely unsightly looking face. He attempted to make Sieg repeat what he had just said, however after an ice cold glare from Sieg, he immediately backed down.

"Thin Ice buddy. Thin Ice" Sieg said coldly.

Oliver froze up before bowing up and down repeatedly in apology. This made Sieg chuckle a bit.

"Geez... I'm proud of you Oliver. When I first met you, I honestly thought you were some kind of lost cause loser who wouldn't amount to anything..." Sieg said.

Hearing him say that made Oliver want to cry a bit.

"But... You've surpassed all expectations I've put on you. Be proud of that, got it?" Sieg said, smiling softly.

Oliver stood up straight and nodded. Seeing Oliver give a thumbs up and a big smile, Sieg was satisfied.

"Don't just stay cooped up on the balcony all night. It's your day too. Have fun okay" Sieg said as he began to leave.

"Of course... General shorty." Oliver said with a smirk.

"Ugh why is it catching on?!" Sieg yelled from the hallway.

After having a quick chuckle to himself, Oliver secretly pulled out his driver. He began looking at it as he leaned up against the railing.

"This is all thanks to you. I know I sound like a broken record... But it's true. Without this driver, I probably would just be a nobody stuck in the medical department..." Oliver said to himself, gripping onto the driver.

“Not just nobody… I'd be a bastard who'd rather blame himself and say it couldn't be helped, rather than try to fix my situation. I'd just be a self hating loser who only brought others down…” Oliver added.

Thinking about all he had gone through, Oliver sighed.

"This is just the beginning huh? Fuck if it's this hard now, it's going to get way worse isn't It?!" Oliver whined.

His whining then turned into a smile as he tilted his head up a bit to see the moon.

"One day... I'll get there. I'll be one of the greats. Someone everyone remembers. Guess that's obvious… cause..." Oliver said, as he began reaching for the moon again.

"I'm an investigator,”
