Oliver was dumbfounded by her answer, telling her she couldn’t do that and it was cheating. She shrugged, saying that she didn't have to do it.
"It's not like we're under some sort of contact. If I don't wanna answer I won't. Simple as that. Besides you're just an amateur... I have no reason to give you preferential treatment" Yue said.
"But that's unfair!" Oliver exclaimed.
"Life is always unfair, Oliver. It's time you learn that..." Yue retorted.
Oliver was disheartened, looking down at his feet, his head hanging low. He clenched his fist before looking at her determinedly.
"I'm not taking that as an answer!" Oliver said, standing his ground.
Yue stopped, before turning to face Oliver. She glared intensely at him, even releasing some descent energy in an aura. Oliver could notice the light blue and dark maroon wisps of descent energy flowing out and circling her. It felt like he was in a never ending winter, with a cold wind that could push back the tallest mountains. Even still, he stood his ground.
"Answer me. I don't care if I freeze here... I'll get my answer!" Oliver said, with burning passion.
Yue's expression darkened before even more aura was released. Now it felt like the cold was clawing at him, eating and chipping him away. In truth he could feel his will wavering, but he needed to know. He needed to satisfy his curiosity. He needed to become stronger!
Oliver looked at his hand, hesitating for a moment, before breaking his fingers. The adrenaline brought by the pain cleared his mind, letting him hold out just a bit more. Seeing the lengths Oliver would go through just for something as stupid as an answer, caused Yue to falter. She deactivated her aura, rushing over to him in an almost panicked state. Oliver was shocked to find Yue healing his finger, cooling it down before wrapping it with the bow that tied her hair.
"Don't do something stupid like that ever again! I can't have one of my operators hurt himself for something as stupid as an answer!" She yelled.
Oliver's eyes widened a bit before smirking.
"So… you'll answer my question?" Oliver commented.
Yue glared at him before crossing her arms.
"That's really what you're focused on?! Do you really think after the stunt you've pulled, I would answer your bloody question?" Yue said in an exasperated tone.
Smiling to himself Oliver felt confident in what he would say next.
“Yes”
Yue's expressioned darkened but Oliver still held his confident expression. This made Yue smile, her expression softening considerably.
"You've grown to be quite the egotistical man.... Fine, I'll tell you how someone awakens to descent energy... But first let's fine somewhere quiet" Yue explained, her gaze shifting the nosy evesdroppers.
The two entered an empty storage room with Yue erecting a purple barrier around it. She sat down in an unoccupied chair as she crossed her arms and legs. Oliver sat down in front of her, eagerly waiting for her answer.
"Oliver, do you know about the memory and emotions theory of Fester existence?" Yue asked.
Oliver thought for a moment, before asking her if that was the theory about descent energy being the physical embodiment of memories and emotions.
"So you've heard of it? Did my husband tell you?" Yue asked.
Oliver nodded, explaining that he received a very unsatisfactory answer from Sieg that lead him to ask her about descent energy.
"He told me that I could use descent energy, but I clearly can't!" Oliver said exasperatedly.
Yue held her chin, her interest piquing after hearing that. She leaned back into her chair, before looking out the nearby window.
“Being able to use descent energy, is like being able to fold your tongue, or lick your elbow. It's something that no matter how hard you try, unless you're born with the ability, you won't be able to use it…” Yue explained.
“R- right… you still didn't explain to me if I could use descent energy or not…” Oliver said, grimacing.
Yue rolled her eyes, before standing up.
“if your TWIN sister can, you obviously can too… but you haven't unlocked the ability yet. For that to happen… you'd have to go through some serious trauma. One so painful you're able to block out all other thoughts…”
“Except destruction”
The silence in the room was deafening. Neither Olivia nor Ren could follow up with the bombshell Olivia dropped. What were they even supposed to talk about? "Oh hey I hate your brother too!" Ren couldn't say that, it wasn't even true. "Oh it was just a joke" Olivia couldn't say that either, cause it too wasn't the truth. All they could do was look around the café, making awkward eye contact occasionally.
Looking out from the break room, Susan grimaced.
"What the hell did that girl say?! Why aren't they talking to each other?!" Susan exclaimed, a bit upset she didn't get to see a cute lovey-dovey scene.
One of Susan's employees raised her hand before bringing her two cents into it.
"Maybe your niece 'fumbled the bag'..." She said.
Susan looked at her with a bright smile on her face, but pure maliciousness in her eyes. She clasped her employees hand, slowly increasing the grip of her squeeze.
"My family DOESN'T fumble the bag. In fact, I believe Olivia said something so sweet and romantic, that the two immediately ran out of things to talk about. NOT because she completely ruined the conversation, but because they couldn't find anything to top what she said. You got it newbie?" Susan said, squeezing as hard as she could.
The narrative has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
The employee quickly shook her head up and down. Susan released her hand before clasping her own hands together.
"Alright everybody let's watch my niece NOT fumbling the bag!" Susan said, happily.
Her other employees were far too scared to speak up, so they were forced to join in Susan's spying.
Looking at Ren, Olivia tried explaining what she meant by "I hate my brother". She didn't mean it like, "I hate my brother cause he treats me badly", but more like, "I hate my brother because he no longer needs me". Hearing that, made Ren feel a bit more easy. Not only cause he knew Olivia wasn't a bad person, at least not entirely, but also because he could relate to how Olivia was feeling.
"I get what you mean. It's like, they don't need you anymore and you lose all meaning and purpose. Like you've failed them. You were supposed to protect them but now..." Ren looked up at Olivia.
He noticed the facial expression she was making, which screamed "I wanna tell you you're wrong, but I don't wanna hurt your feelings". Ren felt a bit embarrassed and guilty that he essentially just let out his feelings without thinking about Olivia. He lowered his head before apologizing.
"No no it's fine! It's just... I kinda feel jealous of you" Olivia said, fidgeting with her fingers.
Ren lifted his head up, confused as to what she meant. Olivia put her hands on her knees as she began looking down.
"Your feelings... They're kinda and pure. You feel hurt because you feel like you've failed someone... But what I feel... Is that the only person I thought would never leave me... Has not only abandoned me… but surpassed me" Olivia confessed.
Ren couldn't lie and say he didn't feel appalled by Olivia, but from all he knew of her, he knew that she was only hurt. At least he wanted to believe that. He held hand tightly, looking at her with determination.
"If you believe that everyone will abandon you.... I'll stay by your side, ok?" Ren said, clenching her hand tightly.
Olivia looked up at him with slight redness creeping up her cheeks. She stared at Ren, her heart beating incredibly fast. To Olivia, Ren looked like a handsome knight who was going to save her from the evils of the world.... though, to Ren, Olivia looked like she was going to kill him. It was mostly due to her RBF, but all her signs of affection translated to "death death kill murder". He was genuinely terrified for his life, so he took his hand off her before repeatedly slamming his head on the table as he apologised.
"I. Am. So. Rry." He said before passing out.
Olivia began panicking as she saw the unconscious Ren on the floor. She turned over to the break room, signaling to Susan to get help.
"T- that must be nothing! She is just dancing because how happy she is!" Susan said, still trying to convince her staff that Olivia didn't fumble the bag.
"Then how do you explain the unconscious man on the floor" one of her staff members said.
Susan began laughing maniacally as she began telling them that Ren fell so hard for Olivia that he passed out. Her staff looked at her disapprovingly, which hurt her ego by quite a bit.
"You're delusional..." they all said in unison.
Susan began crying a bit as she sat on the floor and curled into a ball. As if fate wanted to punish her, Olivia swung the door open violently, causing Susan's face to get hit.
"Hey help me you old hag- why are you bleeding?!" Olivia yelled.
Susan held her bumped head as she slowly approached Olivia. She was practically leaking murderous intent, with each step fear grew in both the staff and Olivia.
"Why you little-" but before she could do anything, Ren woke up.
He stopped Susan's attempt, looking at her with a serious expression on his face.
"Just what do you think you're-" it was then when Ren saw the expression on Olivia's face.
Once again in Olivia's point of view, Ren was saving her from the evil nasty dragon! "Hey I'm not a dragon!"
However from Ren's point of view. To describe what he saw, reader's discretion was advised. Essentially, it was like looking at a woman whose dog you killed, whose house burned down, whose husband cheated on her with his 20 year old secretary, whose children never let her sleep, whose only joy in life is to garden; but just last week there was a locus plague, whose lost all her money due to poor investments in beanie babies, whose parents are called Linda and Hubert, whose favourite book's author was found out to be a kiddy diddler, whose favourite ice cream store got ran over by a dog in a polo, whose shoes got covered in mud which actually turned out to be a mixture of somebody's grampa's ashes and expired chocolate milk, whose life was ruined all because she got sick one day!
Such a sigh, could make even the strongest of men fall weak on their knees. And not the way Olivia and Susan wanted.
"Mama..." Ren said before passing out again.
Ren fell on the ground unceremoniously, a rather disturbing expression plastered on his face. The two women turned their attention to the unconscious Ren, quickly helping him onto a couch in the break room.
"You have a pretty strange boyfriend huh Olivia?" Susan commented.
Olivia turned to her with a red face, insisting that they weren't dating. Susan only smirked before sticking her tongue out and shrugging.
"Sure sure~ then if you're not dating you wouldn't mind if I left you two alone for a while to brew some coffee right?" Susan said as she began walking away.
Olivia tried to stop her, but she left before she could utter a single word.
"Gosh that woman..." Olivia pouted.
She sighed, before looking at Ren. She looked at his sleeping face, wondering if she actually liked him or not.
"I mean he's cute and all... But isn't that just too vain? Do I like him for anything other than his looks? I mean I get mad when he tells me off... And he's way too strict as an instructor... But he did bring me here to cheer me up. And it was quite sweet what he said earlier... But do I even deserve a guy like him?" Olivia thought to herself, brushing his hair away.
Her cold finger touching his skin woke Ren up. Olivia was a bit startled, but not as startled as Ren was. Like before he misinterpreted her expression to be negative, so he almost passed out again. Fortunately, Olivia managed to snap him out of it.
"Not again mister!" Olivia said, slapping him.
Ren grunted as he began cradling his cheek. He looked at Olivia with a bit of guilt and fear, before sighing.
"Sorry... It's just... You have a really scary face" Ren commented.
Hearing that, made Olivia a bit angry. She smiled, but behind her grin was the fury of a thousand suns.
"I'm sorry!" Ren said, mostly out of fear.
Oliver calmed down a bit after hearing that, though she was still a bit upset. She pinched him before crossing her arms and pouting. Ren didn't say anything, feeling like he deserved it.
"I'm sorry too I guess..." Olivia said, clearly upset she had to admit her mistake.
"No no! It's fine it's my fault..." Ren exclaimed, laughing from fear.
Olivia raised an eyebrow, before resting her head on the table. She sighed before venting to Ren.
"It's just... Everyone says that. They say I look like I'm looking down on them... And that I can just fuck off" Olivia mumbled.
Ren sat up, before rubbing the back of his head.
"Yeah I get it... Sometimes people think I'm hard to approach since I look serious all the time" Ren said.
Olivia looked up to him before chuckling.
"That's cause you act like you're in the military. You keep calling everyone by their job title instead of their actual names" Olivia commented.
Ren's face turned red as he began fidgeting with his fingers.
"Y- yeah... I don't know, it's just really hard to get out of that mindset. My mom well... She'd put some high ranking military officers to shame..." Ren chuckled.
Olivia sat up as she began to stretch.
"No wonder your sister's such a bitch- I mean lovely woman..." Olivia said, sticking her tongue out after that embarrassing slip up.
Ren laughed awkwardly before looking down at his feet.
"Well I can't deny and say she's a saint... But she's a nice girl. Really" Ren explained.
Olivia looked over to him before looking back at the table.
"Yeah I guess she's pretty nice sometimes... But I hate that. Why do people I think are bad, try to be nice sometimes? It makes me seem like an ass for hating them, because in reality they're not bad people... And that maybe I'm the bad person" Olivia confessed.
Ren looked away, before sighing.
"Sometimes we can't control how we feel.... It doesn't make you a bad person for hating someone. What makes you a bad person is what you do with that hatred. Do you use it as fuel to become better? Or do you use it as fuel to burn them?" Ren said, standing up.
Olivia paused for a moment, thinking about what he said. A small smile crept up her face as she stood up as well. She looked up at him with an excited expression on her face as she clenched both of her fists. She raised them up before proclaiming.
"I'll definitely use it to become better!"
Hearing that made Ren smile. He patted her head before feeling his phone beeping. He pulled it out, seeing an emergency message from F.A.T.E.
"All investigators from Squadron A and Squadron C please meet up near leighburne town; an outbreak has occurred"
He looked over to Olivia, noticing that she had received the same text. The two nodded to each other before grabbing their belongings.
"Let's go exterminate some pests”
