We followed the group of four out of the hangar and into the busier streets of the station itself, making sure to keep a distance where we were close enough not to lose them but still far enough not to draw suspicion.
We were waiting for them to get to a more open section of the street before we made our move. Right now there were too many people and a misplaced shot could kill someone we did not intend to, which might cause a big shootout if that were to happen.
We continued moving deeper into the station until we arrived at a crossroad where the crowd eased up a bit.
Amber surged forward and I knew without her saying anything that it was time to attack.
Amber gave me a nod before moving to the side, flanking them from our right while I continued my current path.
My hand went to my holster and I pulled out my pistol, readying myself to shoot at the lead tentacle alien as soon as I got a clear shot.
They reached the centre of the crossroads and I lifted my gun, pointing it at the back of where I assume the alien’s head was.
Just as I was about to pull the trigger, however, one of the tentacled aliens that was carrying a box suddenly turned back and flung its ‘arm’ at me.
The tentacle extended out from its sleeve and wrapped itself around my wrist, pulling my hand aside and messing up my aim.
Fuck! We’ve been had! They must have known we were following them from the start!
I tried to pull my hand free but the tentacle alien was stronger than I thought. It didn’t even budge even when I was pulling at it with all my strength.
The other alien beside it also turned around and reached one of its tentacles under its cloak as though trying to pull out something.
That was when two gunshots rang out from the side and both the alien holding me and its buddy got their heads splattered.
The third one that was transporting the last of the box turned to see Amber leaping towards it and blowing its head out as well before she landed.
The leader of that group spun around and tried to swing its tentacle to slam into Amber while she was still recovering from her leap.
Before that tentacle could connect with her though, I levelled my freed hand at the leader and pulled the trigger, firing a shot directly into the hood and killing it.
Amber nodded a thanks at me and rushed towards one of the boxes, ignoring the looks that everyone else around was giving us.
Even though we just shot four people dead in the middle of the street, there was no panic or even much reaction for that matter. Everyone was just watching us like they were watching some kind of tv show.
I decided to just go along with it as well and went to another box, getting ready to pick it up when Amber ‘fumbled’ with hers and dropped it on the ground.
The top of the box came loose and plopped open, revealing that it contained bags upon bags of that white powder.
Everyone around us now had their eyes on the bags while Amber and I were more concerned about whether the military crate was in it.
With how many bags spilled out from there, we could already see that the crate was distinctly missing so that was not the box that contained the crate.
Amber immediately abandoned that box and went to pick up the other one before running out of the junction.
This content has been misappropriated from Royal Road; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.
I followed after her of course, though just pausing long enough to see several of the onlookers rush towards the overturned box to grab at the bags of white powder.
That sparked off a mad rush as the others also joined in and fought to claim as many bags of it for themselves as possible.
That was when my shield flickered to life as it blocked a gunshot fired from somewhere.
I turned to look at the direction of the shot and found some scarred face guy running after me with his gun held in his hand.
“Come back here!! Give me that powder you bitchhhhh!!” He squealed maniacally.
Oh shit… Don’t tell me that guy’s an addict…
Fucking hell, go take it from that pile instead of ours!
Just as I was trying to figure out how to shake him off, a piece of scrap metal was thrown at him and smashed against his face, sending him falling backwards onto the ground on his haunches.
I looked in front to see Amber in the midst of turning around, outing her as the one who threw that thing.
I’m more surprised that she even managed to pick up something to throw at that guy so accurately despite carrying that box in her hands.
The plan seemed to go without a hitch until someone behind us shouted, “Those two have more of it!!”
I risked turning my head back to see a mob had formed and they were now running towards us, clearly intent on seizing the boxes we were carrying to grab more of the drugs.
Fucking mobs… Go fight amongst yourselves for the ones that have fallen out instead of running after us, damnit!!
Someone in that mob fired a shot and my shield materialised once again to protect me from the bullet,
If only I knew whether the crate was in this box or not then I could decide whether I should just toss the box at them and run after Amber…
“Tera, duck!”
I didn’t even hesitate when I heard Amber’s instruction coming from the front and immediately bent myself forward awkwardly while still carrying the box.
I stumbled slightly but I managed to regain my footing right as a giant metal sheet flew over my head.
I watched with wonder as the large piece of metal crashed into the front of the mob, causing them to fall into a pile which tripped up everyone else behind them.
“This way! Over here!” Amber cried out, not even showing any fatigue despite throwing such a large object.
She turned down an alley and I followed in after her, the blonde haired Merc banging a fist against a pile of poles stacked against the wall as she passed to cause them to topple over and block the alley.
We continued running for a while more, dodging through various alleys and making several turns before Amber finally slowed down as we entered a small clearing behind some houses.
“I… I think we’re good here…” Amber sighed, looking more relieved than tired after the short sprint we had.
I dropped the box I was carrying and huffed, “Goo… Good… Ugh… I don’t want to go through that again… Can we just get this done and over with?”
Amber lifted the cover on her box and started tossing out the bags of white powder like they were trash.
Seeing them being thrown on the floor like that, I couldn’t help but ask, “How much are each of these bags worth?”
She paused and hefted one of the bags in her hands as though testing the weight.
“Hmm… Not sure about the prices here but I guess average at around fifty thousand Credits per bag?”
“That’s… Cheaper than I thought it would be…”
I mean… Considering that each of these bags weigh at least two hundred grams by my estimation.
She shrugged, “Remember, it’s not illegal here and these aren’t really that hard to get.”
“Right… So I guess we’re going to sell them later?”
“Oh. Oh yeah, we can. I forgot about that.”
She was so focused on the military crate that she forgot that these were actual commodities huh?
She stopped tossing the bags away and started placing them on the ground instead as she dug through the box, stopping when she already made a sizable hole but saw that the crate wasn’t there.
She came over to my box and removed the cover and started to do the same, this time with me joining her.
Soon enough, the crate came into view and we reached in to pull it out of the box, dropping it beside the pile of white powder we had dug out.
I looked at the box, “So… How do we deal with this?”
Amber shook her head, “I’ll deal with it, Tera… Could you… Help me pack the White Powder back in the boxes and move them aside? I’ll need space for this…”
I shrugged and did as she told, packing the drugs back into their respective boxes quickly before pushing them to the corner to give her as much space as she needed.
Just as I moved the second box to plop it down beside the first one, I noticed an orange glow coming from behind me and I turned back to see the box was engulfed in flames.
Woah, what the heck? She really just lit that thing on fire? And that fire seems a little big… Where did she even get the gasolene to burn it? I definitely did not see her pouring any over it though?
I turned to my lover, only to see her lunging towards me without warning and tackling me to the ground, right before the container exploded violently.
Ah… I guess that was the self-destruct thing for the box?
“Are you alright?!” Amber asked, still covering me with her body.
I nodded, “Yeah… Though I think it’ll be a good idea for us to get out of here before people come and investigate…”
She agreed and we quickly left the place after taking the boxes with us.
I would say things went smoothly despite that initial hiccup, eh?
