Ch 50: Halfway there

(They) (might)

*You move onward.

*An Echo Flower is up ahead. You stop to listen.

"Chara! It's me, your best friend! And let me just say, that sure was a close call! Just an inch closer and Undyne would've caught you. No...she'd have thrust her spear right through your Lil head. Would that have broken you Chara? Made you fall into despair and become the heartless murderer I know you are deep down?"

*...

"Hahahah! Oh, that would've been fun to see. But watching you slip by has its own charm to it. But how long until your luck runs out Chara? how long until you face something that can't be stopped with words alone? How long until you become just like me?"

*...

"Whatever you do, good, or 'bad', just remember...I'll be watching."

"...Uh just to clarify, that last Echo Flower? NOT ME! It was probably that smiley trash bag that broke it."

Frisk: 'Uhuh, sure."

*A long silence fills the room.

"Chara! It's me, your best fr-"

*Let's move on.

Frisk: 'Alright.'

*You move onward.

*You move onward. The surroundings change into a darker blue, and you walk on a road that splits a large lake in half.

*You move onward.

*You mov-

Frisk: 'Hey. Not to be a bother but...why does that Flowey guy keep flip-flopping between wanting us to kill everyone and fighting against the barrier's influence. I mean, don't they know that killing EVERYONE includes themselves?'

*...Asriel was never the sort to jump to violence. I admired him at times for it. But...when our lives were at stake...that mindset didn't do us many favors.

Frisk: 'Hm, you said something of that sort when we were fighting Papyrus.'

*...Yes. It's likely my fault that he has become the vile creature that he is today. I was...a bad older brother. That's why I must be good now, I must be an example that he can follow. One that won't lead him to the same ruin as all those years ago.

Frisk: 'Hmm, but isn't he doing the same thing?'

*?

Frisk: 'I mean, he keeps telling you that the best way to go about things is to throw away morality and just do whatever you want. Completely based in my opinion...but unlike me, he doesn't really benefit at all in convincing you to abandon your morality.'

*What's your point?

Frisk: 'My point is that in his own demented way, he thinks he's being the example that YOU can follow. So of course he won't take your lead.'

*...That's ridiculous. His example is wrong! It's evil! I'd never follow it!

If you discover this tale on Amazon, be aware that it has been stolen. Please report the violation.

Frisk: 'And your example is limiting, hard, and something someone as free as Flowey would never follow. See the issue?'

*So what? I just quit? Kill the monster I created and act like I'm some sort of savior when all I've done is-

Frisk: 'Yeesh! Chill it with the angst! I was just talking because I was bored, I'm not here to answer crap.'

*...You are the most infuriating person I have ever met.

Frisk: 'Thanks.'

*You move onward to a wider area with a hole in the center.

Frisk: 'Yo that hole looks Iphone shaped.'

*...

Frisk: 'Aw come on. Are we going to do this whole cold shoulder thing every time we have an issue? I get you want to kill me but do you have to make this journey so...boring?'

*W-WHAT?! Don't you have any empathy?! Or at least social awareness?! You just told me my own brother is hell-bent on making me as evil as them and that there may be NOTHING I can do to save them! Can you not understand how upsetting that is!?

Frisk: '...Like it's kinda hard to take you seriously when you use upsetting. I mean, just say you're fudging mad.'

*I FUCKING HATE YOU!

Frisk: 'Jeez, no need to get that upset.'

*...

Frisk: '...'

*You move onward and find a stone statue drenched by a rain that only hits it. You thoughtlessly move forward.

*You move to a location with a trash can full of umbrellas.

Frisk: 'Look at this Chara, I'm dual-wielding Umbrellas! No storm can stop me now!'

*You clearly did not read the sign that asked you to only grab one.

Frisk: '...Ugh, so this is how it's going to be? You're gonna throw a hissy-fit whenever someone slaps you in the face with the cold truth?'

*...

Frisk: 'Pfff, what a pain...'

*You look at both Umbrellas, then you move...backward?

*You look at the statue...

*Put the umbrella on the statue?

*Yes <

*Do not

*You place the Umbrella on top of the statue.

*Inside the statue, a music box begins to play...

Frisk: 'Look, I barely understand what's going on. I won't say I'm a good person, or that I even care about you. But well... if there's one thing I've learned from you is that it's hard to control what people want. No matter how much I hurt you, no matter what I told you...you still didn't WANT to hurt monsters. And in the same way...I don't want to be bored. I'm sure Flowey feels just like me. Because for us, that's more important than any morality. And...you probably can't change that about us.'

*...

Frisk: 'All you can do is try to figure out how to co-exist with those folks. Flowey will never be like Asriel. But...if you figured out what Flowey wants...maybe you could make him learn how to have fun helping others?'

*Why are you telling me this?

Frisk: 'It's not for any heroic reason. I just don't want to be bored. I like are stupid jokes, I like your wordiness, and I like having fun. And you giving me the cold shoulder makes things unfun. So I rather you be a whiney moral loser than some cold apathetic narrator that doesn't talk to me at all.'

*...

Frisk: '...Whatever. Kill Flowey for all I care. It doesn't matter much to me.'

*You sit next to the statue?

Frisk: 'I'm tired, it's been a long walk.'

*You close your eyes.

*Despite the deaths, despite all the pain, despite the worry that we have in each step we take.

*...The music box's melody sounds nice.

Frisk: 'It always will Chara, as long-'

*You yawn.

Frisk: 'As long as you're willing to listen...'
