It looked like things were finally beginning to calm down
After all those monsters seemed to be drawn to your town
For a while, the portal residue will block the sun
You’ve managed to put most of the weak monsters on the run
Log stood near another little mountain of the dead
The number of his victories that day went to his head
He wiped the sweat from his head, well inflated by his pride
And seeing no live monsters anywhere he deeply sighed
“Delilah, are you done there, things are quieting down here
It’s hard to believe this caused the gods themselves such fear
I’m still getting started, though I sure could use some lunch
I think it might be around noon, but that’s still just a hunch”
“I think we can trust your stomach, it’s probably noon
But we shouldn’t waste time, we must go and find Twig soon”
Delilah pulled her sword out of a golem’s rocky core
Looking more than ready for another round of war
She quickly walked over to the place her husband stood
Encouraging him to move as quickly as he could
“Yes, we’ll go and find our son, but first we should head back
We need to determine the extent of the attack”

Delilah frowned but nodded, for she knew his words were true
“You’re talking like a royal knight again, like you used to”
He smiled hugged her for a moment, then they hurried on
Content that from the portals no more monsters seemed to spawn

I just barely kept the gods of war from taking you
If you went berserk, what would your poor old husband do?
Try to keep a clear head when you’re fighting for a cause
Getting lost in endless swarms of foes should give you pause
The villagers convened and they all seemed healthy enough
Few among the elders were retired but still quite tough
Even Michael put his knowledge of the sword to use
Enjoying the rare chance to a let some steam off and cut loose
The eldest of the village, known to many as the Chief
Had also killed enough monsters to cause some disbelief
Many knew that in another time he was the best
But he still had more power than he normally confessed

It’s been at least a century since you picked up a sword
Be careful or a brutal back ache will be your reward
The blessings that you earned bring you near immortality
But all these stats can’t compensate for your old injury
Chief Max rubbed his aching back and called his friends and kin
Who gathered round the elder and all keenly listened in
All the children came running out of their hiding place
Pebble following behind, frustration on his face
Boulder had just joined the crowd and shouted out to Max
“Do you have some idea what’s behind these attacks?”
The hundred or so villagers who’d gathered round were tired
And wanted answers from the hero they had though retired
“I’m as lost as you are on this madness, to be frank
You might say that I’m as clueless as your average tank
But I’ve seen enough portals in my life to say for sure
This is not something that most of the world can endure”
Crystal rolled her eyes and stepped forward to face the chief
“Seeing you in action today was quite a relief
But what should we do if this happens again tomorrow?
Just how much will the gods let those portals overflow?”
The villagers rang out in agreement with what she said
Worried by the god-sent messages which they’d all read
All were veterans who’d seen their share of war and strife
But none were keen to return to such a hard way of life
“Unfortunately, as the eldest of this gathering
It’s clearest to me what our destiny is demanding
To my knowledge, no nation could survive these attacks
And we would not be forgiven for just turning our backs”
