CHAPTER FIFTY NINE

It’s funny who you trust when you get desperate and alone

~

Twig had no reason not to keep reading the blue screen

Still he wasn’t sure what his old guardian could mean

He just sat beside his friends whose blood now covered him

With no choice but to rely on his tormenter’s whim

Achievement: Preparation

Close your eye and concentrate on everything you feel

Then let go of every feeling that you’re sure is real

Find the mana flowing through your veins and channel it

Try to feel it in your hand, it should tingle a bit

He did as he was told and did his best to meditate

Somehow managing to trust that cruel god with his fate

He felt the mana flowing through his body, like he’d read

Then tried to focus on his hand like the blue screen had said

Achievement: Channelling

I think you’ve got the hang of it, it took you long enough

Though the way it’s moving now seems more than a bit rough

Push the mana though your heart, but try to move it slow

Then push it as far out of your hand as it can go

Again, Twig blindly followed the instructions of his god

Starting to wonder a bit if his judgement was flawed

But as he channeled mana through his heart and to his hand

The power he had harnessed was easy to understand

Achievement: Healing

Now pour all of the mana that you have into your friend

Don’t stop til you’ve used up all your mana to the end

This will likely kill you, but you probably won’t mind

It’s the least that you can do for somebody so kind

He nodded in agreement and he placed his hand on Sky

Letting mana leave him til he felt his well run dry

Her breathing seemed less laboured as his own was weakening

And felt guilty to find his friend's company comforting

A girl who threw her class away to save her dying friend

But it was he who gave his life to save her in the end

When she wakes up, she’s going to be so very mad

It looks like there’s more exciting battles to be had!

Achievement: Good Enough

Those gods of war are sick, but if what that god says is true

The reason for her class change was likely because of you

Though I wish your death would see her destiny restored

It’s good enough to have you leave them of your own accord

Twig crawled over to the wall of the dimly lit cave

Content that in the end there was at least one he could save

He closed his eye and felt his heart, with all its mana spent

And waited for it to stop beating in just a moment

He threw away his memories of all his recent plights

Forgetting every monster and all of his sleepless nights

His heart, devoid of mana, was so quiet and serene

Much more peaceful than anywhere he had ever been

He found himself just standing there, and came to realize

Though he could see, he knew he had two hands and eyes

All his pain and fear was gone, and all he felt was cold

Surrounded by dark emptiness with nothing to behold

He couldn’t help but search for warmth in all futility

Knowing he would find none as he wandered endlessly

How long had it been since he slipped into such a state

Had it been minutes or years, and how long would he wait

“Hello? Is anybody there? Am I alive or dead?”

But there was no reply to any of the words he said

He almost started feeling frustrated as he went on

But in the peaceful, empty place, all he could do was yawn

Every moment that went by felt like eternity

Boredom overtook him soon and made him feel empty

He sat down on what felt like the ground, though he wasn’t sure

Everything he currently saw and felt was a blur

Then, in all that darkness, Twig knew something was still there

Something foreign to him, as far he was aware

In front of him, a little glowing spec of energy

Floated there, so dim that it was difficult to see

Of all the mana in his heart which he’d recently purged

This was a new type of energy that just emerged

Had it always been there, or was it just passing by

He was sure he’d given all of his mana to Sky

For a while he only stared at it while deep in thought

Wondering if there was some other thing he’d forgot

Then he thought he might as well use an appraisal skill

Reaching out to touch the force and determine its will
