CHAPTER XXXXI: SCOUTING REPORT

FORT CHAVEZ
SUGAR AND ADIA
Sugar and Adia briskly walked back to the Command. It was taking a lot longer than Sugar thought it should. Adia noticed her frustration. “If this bothers you now you won’t like it when your little Hamlet becomes a massive City.” She spread her arms wide. “A Hamlet is usually the size of a small modern-day city of a pre-system world, while a City is usually the size of a couple of metropolitan areas combined. The biggest Trade Cities are the size of counties if not Countries.” They looked at the Guard Towers flanked by even more weapon systems placed by her hard-working NPCs.
They were leveling fast, and even Adia found that odd. In all of her long life, she had never seen Players grow as fast as the NPCs were growing over the last few days.

“How many does it take to man the lightning cannons? The minimum, I mean? We will need more people to help with ten thousand coming at us.”
“With two at each guard tower and one at each corner, there is a total of twelve in the inner fort. If we only man one per guard tower and have both at the southern outer gate fully manned, that should only take up twenty of our citizens.”
They walked into the Command building and straight back to the tactical table.
“Attention!” Someone yelled when Sugar entered.
“At ease.” She smiled at the respect given to her. “What’s up with our scouts?”
Modeski clicked on the table and replayed a message. “The table records all that happens on it. It has limited storage, but as the For t levels, so does that storage.” He then pushed play.
[Command this is Red 1 over?]
[Red 1 command, send it over.]
[We have made visual contact with the convoy getting count now; it is a lot over.]
[Copy visual contact with convoy, get us numbers when you can over.]
[Need some guidance on what to do now, Command; we were just sent out to make contact. Over]
[Copy that, hold tight. Command will get the lady in here for guidance. Over.]
[Okay, standing by, out.]
Sugar listened until the end. “That's it?” She asked incredulously.
“No, ma’am.” Modeski started to play with the table again. He pushed play.
[Command, Red 1, we have made visual contact with attackers. They are much closer than Intel suggests. Also, the estimated number in the convoy is 10,000]
[Good copy will go on alert here. Stand by the lady is en route. Over.]
[To us or you? Over.]
[To me, why would she...]
Sugar turned it off. “Get me, Sergeant Rice.” She said to a runner. The man took off.
“Mo, can you zoom in closer?” Johnny asked Modeski.
“Yes, Sergeant.” He placed both hands on the table and pulled them apart, zooming in on the yellow-green cluster of bodies.
Johnny nodded, “Good. Now scan south.”
Modeski followed the trail south to a cluster of red dots a thousand meters away but moving fast north.
Johnny touched the chat function.
[Red 1, this Alpha 1, we need a count on the enemy, and then we need spotters, over.]
[That is light work, Alpha 1. We got you over.]
[Good copy, out.]
Rice rushed in, covered in dirt and grim. “You called for me, boss lady?” Rice asked his redneck accent a little annoyed at being pulled away from his task.
“We have a fire mission for you and your squad.” Sugar said to the dirty man.
“Excellent, we are just about done with our battle position in the outer fort area. I’ll call them back to the tubes in the inner area. I’ll need...uh... ten mikes, ma’am.” Rice informed his commander.
“Alright, try and get that down to five for me, please.” Sugar ordered.
“Wilco, ma’am. I sent a message to meet me there already. We will be red-con 1 in five.”
“Good. Link up with Command when you are set up. Go ahead and get them ready.” Sugar returned Rice’s salute as he left the building in a sprint, almost barreling into another staff member.
“We should build bigger doors next time because as stats rise, that could get dangerous.” Sugar said.
“Maybe we should just walk like we got some home training, ma’am,” Johnny stated thoughtfully.
“Yeah, that might be better.” Sugar acquiesced.
She looked at the wall map, which was updated with the tactical map. She could see the green dots of the Colonel’s team leaving. She was going to tell him about the new discovery, but they had their own problems and needed to focus. ‘He left me in charge. I must prove to him I can be the leader he needs me to be.” She thought. ‘I need the resources of the Stronghold to find my son and husband anyway, so our motivations align.’ She shook her head. There will be time for that later. If there was one thing her husband was good at, it was violence to protect his family. So, if they survived, they would be thriving. “Any recommendations, Johnny?” She asked to cover for her wandering thoughts.
“Sometimes simple is best. We have artillery. We may as well use it. Their power should be enough to scare the others in line so we can get them processed. Two birds, one stone.” Johnny shrugged.
“You got a class now?” Some NPCs had some changes as they leveled their skills, especially those from the skill tome. “Does that mean you are a Classer now and no longer an NPC?”
Johnny shook his head. “An NPC just means Non-Professional Classer now. The NPCs who got professions are now New Professional Characters or NMC for Non Merchant Characters. I have specialized three times so far with the EXP I had saved up from the Dungeon and the Horde. Shield Gunslinger is the True Class my Skill Tome had opened up for me. I don’t have an open path like a traditional Classer.”
“Oh, that is kind of cool. We get EXP from each NPC. I would hate to lose that income if we trained them up. It’s good to know we would benefit greatly by doing it now.” Sugar said she was already planning on finding out as much information as she possibly could.
“Power leveling NPCs is generally a waste of money.” Adia began. “They are only equal in power in the Mortal realm. In the Sky Realm, they slowly but inevitably get outpaced by Classer and Professionals because of their lack of Powers to turn into Arts. But that doesn’t seem to be a problem for your NPCs.”
Sugar was more than happy to shelf that conversation for later. She touched the scout team chat icon on the tactical map.
[Red 1, this is Command status over?]
A few seconds later, a response came.
[Command red 1 got eyes on the pursuers. We were almost discovered. They had a tracker that found us. We had to neutralize her before she could report back over.]
[Good job, Red 1; mark the rest of them and pull back. Will we be sending them some presents, what are their numbers? Over.] Sugar asked, nodding at Johnny. “Johnny use Stronghold chat, and bring the mortars into the Command channel, let them know we will have target for them in a few seconds.”
“Roger that, ma’am.” His eyes were unfocused, and Sugar looked back at the tactical table.
[Somewhere in the neighborhood of 500 hundred or so, they have spread out a lot, scouting. Over.]
“That would make it difficult to get a good count. You should asked how spread out they are?” Buzbee explained to Sugar since he knew she wasn’t versed in reconnaissance or any other mundane combat skills.
She nodded. “That makes sense. How about you handle communicating with them? That way, I am not playing telephone.” She wanted to say so that I could get the Stronghold ready for the ten thousand refugees, but she knew this was her job as well. ‘Problem for future Brittney.’ She thought.’
She needed to do some leveling as well. She had the EXP but was putting it off until she had some downtime. She was brought out of her musings by a return message.
[Spread is about 300 meters and expanding.] Red 1 replied.
[300 meters, good copy over.] Buzbee answered.
The tactical table flashed, alerting everyone to an update. Colonel and his team were fighting something in the woods, and the marks on the cluster of the Chancellor’s noble guard pursuers.
[Marks are confirmed. Break. Mortars, marks are confirmed, fire for effect. Red 1, walk them in. You have operational command for two minutes on the channel. Make it count.] Buzbee said in Stronghold chat and using the Tactical table.
THUNK!
THUNK!
THUNK!
The mortars began to fire.
[Shot out over!] Rice said in chat.
Everyone was silent, and the seconds felt like minutes as they waited for the first set of rounds to hit.
[Splash over, Good shot, keep them coming.]
THUNK!
THUNK!
THUNK!
More shots went out.
THUNK!
THUNK!
THUNK!
Then more.
Then more.
All in all, they fired ten volleys before...
[Cease Fire, Cease Fire. The rest are out of your range over.]
Sugar stepped up to the table and smashed the microphone button.
[Belay that order; use the glass cannons and finish them.] Sugar said coldly. ‘Fuck those assholes.’
If you stumble upon this narrative on Amazon, it's taken without the author's consent. Report it.
[Copy that command. We will finish them.] Rice replied the smile could be heard through the response.
BOOM!
BOOM!
BOOM!
Silence filled the room again.
[Good shot command. Only one knight survived that we can confirm, and he is riding away like Geronimo did after Little Big Horn. I guess he wasn’t CAV.]
Johnny chuckled.
[Good one, Red 1.] Buzbee laughed.
[That was funny as hell.] Rice replied.
Sugar didn’t get it; it must be an army thing. She looked at the Tactical map and noticed that the group of refugees had surged forward. She reached out to the tactical table.
[Red 1 This is Command. I need eyes on that convoy again over.]
[Shit Command, the noise must have spooked them. We are en route to them. They are about 90 minutes out at this speed.]
[We will prepare here. Just slow them down and guide them to our Noble road. It was a gift from the Game, so we may as well use it.] Sugar ordered.
[Copy that Command over.]
[Command out.]
Sugar shook Johnny’s hand. “Great job, Sergeant.”

They had gotten a bank and a good one, too. She was only getting two and a half percent from her bank before, so this was way better, at least once it leveled up. Happy with that upgrade, she looked at the next one with great intrigue.

The Towers had also grown bigger and more dangerous looking. The area around the fort was cleared as it expanded. The towers were tall enough to see out to the limit of the tree line and down the Noble road to the north, south, and east, with the river to the west having the last outer towers over, watching the waterway with the gate closed.
“The west side will need Navy or Coast Guard to secure it truly.” She thought out loud.
“Hell yeah, we will, ma’am,” Rice said as he walked in. “If a Hydra came out of there, I don’t think we would be able to kill it without destroying our wall, which would kind of defeat the purpose of having a wall.”
“My Dad is retired Navy. So, I am a little aware of all the logistics it takes to operate a Navy. It is a nightmare I will gladly pass on to someone else..” Sugar said. “What level were those guards you killed, and how many altogether?”
“I don’t know, but they gave a shit ton of EXP...Ma’am.” Rice replied.
Sugar looked at him flatly. “Look at your battle log, Rice.” She said with the patience of a mother. ‘Are all men children?’ She shook her head at the thought, and not for the first time.
“Oh yeah, I forgot we could do that, to be honest, ma’am. Let me ask my team. We share EXP but do not kill notifications.” Rice’s eyes unfocused, and Sugar went back to her prompts.

Sugar hadn’t even noticed that the building was much bigger on the inside than it was on the outside. She figured it would be jarring, but it was seamless. She was a gamer and enjoyed when games got the little things right. Shewas sure who was taking up the second channel on the Tactical Table. It didn't matter. It all worked. She smiled and looked at the newest building.

It was amazing, really. A building that gave bonuses to her people without putting them in harm’s way. They were finally safe. She visibly relaxed, and then, of course, she got a prompt bringing her back to reality, well her new reality.

Objective 3: Get the homeless to safety. (Complete)

_____________________________________________________________
She chuckled at her new reality. Then her eyes narrowed; she had looked at the rewards before. It had just said Mage‘s headband. “Now that I am a Warlock, my reward updated.” The gamer in her started to panic. What if she chose a different spec next time? Will it be incompatible? Also who the hell do they report their findings to? What were their findings? She sighed, exasperated.
“Four fifty-four all together, ma’am.” Rice interrupted her thoughts, getting messages back from his team. “Between levels 38 and 52. Sheesh, that dude would have done some damage here. Spear Knights doesn’t sound like a person that was easy to kill.”
She jumped a little, forgetting he was there, ’These prompts are distracting.’ Then she frowned, not sure how she felt about what to do next with all of these people coming. “What level are the people coming?”
“No clue, ma’am, we didn’t kill any of them. We’re pretty damn good at our jobs.” He smirked. “Does the scouting squad have an identify power or anything?” Rice asked, trying to help out.
“Good question.” Sugar reached for the table.
[Red 1 Command over.]
[Command Red 1 send it over.] She got a quick reply.
[Quick update.]
[I think the convoy finally realized they were no longer being pursued. We may have some more problems over.]
“Of course we do.” Sugar sighed
[What is it? Over.]
[They had released their animals when they started to get pursued, so now they are rounding them up, but that has attracted beasts. We already marked a few packs and roving packs moving in our direction. Over]
Sugar, Rice, and Adia looked at the map on the wall slowly. There were dozens of red dots converging on the convoy.
Adia was the first to react with her millennia of experience. “ETA for the wild Beast Horde?”
The table didn’t answer. Adia rolled her eyes. “Ask it that question. It won’t answer me since I am not affiliated with your nation yet.”
“ETA for wild Beast Horde?”
“30 minutes, my Lady.” The table answered
Adia relaxed. “You have two choices. Well, this is the GREAT GAME, so you have many choices, but we are Adventurers, so we only have two choices, Lady Sugar. Do we save them the hard way or the easy way?”
“What do you mean?” Sugar said as a timer counted down until a beast horde on the map.
[Uh, Command, I just got a Beast horde prompt 30 minutes; please advise.] Red 1 said through the tactical table, a little nervous.
Sugar’s mind raced, she could call her scout team back prepare the fort for the horde, but what about the people...
“They left their homes to seek shelter from tyranny, and our great country has always stood for protecting those people in particular, no matter what some political talking heads say.” Colonel had said before he left.
“How long, if traveling at top speed on Kuma, would it take to get there?” She asked.
“15 minutes by rough terrain, 5 minutes on Noble road.” The tactical table answered.
Adia’s perfect eyebrow rose slightly, and a grin grew on her face.
Sugar nodded, making up her mind.
“The hard way, I am guessing. That is the adventurer way, after all.” Adia smirked
