SOTO
Soto stepped out and was immediately blinded by the sunlight. He almost yelled in surprise, but something deep within him pushed down that impulse. As his eyes began to adjust he was absolutely happy he didn’t make a sound. He was in a park, a shitty park, but a park nonetheless. The only things that looked serviceable about the park were the walls. All of the equipment looked like it was flash-rusted overnight. Even the plastic and rubber equipment was rotted to the point of being unidentifiable.
That visual would have put him on edge in the best of times. But the sound of dozens of clawed paws hitting the overgrown urban block outside the park had all of his attention. Well until he got a prompt.

< GLOBAL EVENT >
{The UNCOMMON grace period has ended. If you haven’t cleared your local UNCOMMON Dungeons they will start to expel their excess mobs in order to grow. The beast will seek out places of high mana concentrations. Protect your homes for they come for you, protect your Villages for they intend them harm. UNCOMMON beasts are specialized creatures with multiple natural and magical abilities, some may even evolve with local beasts leaving your surroundings more dangerous than they were before. Their levels may be under 20 at the beginning but that will rise as the waves increase. Seek out a Stronghold for protection, or go at it alone, there are benefits in that as well, just know either way you should Live Well or Die free.}

Soto read the prompt and paled. He couldn’t fully see outside of the park, but he could hear them heading in one direction. If he had to guess it was south to a nearby Stronghold. Because of a few breaks in the wall, he could make out grey fur and nothing else migrating in the same direction. ‘That’s not good. But since they all seem to be moving that way maybe it will be fine.’ At least he thought they would be fine. The park was large enough to hold the whole Raid party, and Soto was confident that the Raid party could defend this area easily. That was when Yazmin Johnny’s wife stepped out of nowhere and tried to stifle a scream. She, unfortunately, didn’t have Soto’s training, or survival instincts so she let out a short but high-pitched scream.
All of the shuffling feet near them stopped. The quiet park sounding eerie without the rhythmic footsteps of the beast. Soto had covered Yazmin’s mouth. She was only five foot two and while she was built like a video vixen, she was dressed in the quest reward cloak they had all received for clearing the dungeon. Soto looked down and saw his cloak was auto-equipped over his ninja outfit.
A little further away the shuffling started again and slowly the rest had begun to follow the migration. Then another NPC stepped out this time a man, he screamed as the sunlight assaulted his senses. Soto was too slow to stop him, but when he did stop him the area was dead quiet again. Soto looked at the cracks in the wall, but nothing.
He didn’t relax. He removed two bladed arrows from his quiver before storing it back. Dual wielding his blades felt a little off, but he couldn’t place the feeling. He also didn’t have time to place the feeling, his Insight skill was telling him something was wrong.
Soto stood still holding his bladed arrows at his side as he closed his eyes and listened. Soto wasn’t stupid he was very much aware that the game world may be real. The longer he thought about it he noticed the little things that made the world real. That being said the Sergeant Major was not in the mood to act nonchalant with the lives he was charged with protecting either way. Whether that was in a game or more importantly real life. Soto wasn’t sure if the game world was real, but he knew if it was he would be pissed if he didn’t take it seriously.
Half of his family was a continent away, the other half was on the other side of the planet. A smile started to build on his face if there was any family more prepared for a world-changing event like this, it was his. He had trained his girls to defend themselves, and his son was a part of the organization that would have the biggest role in keeping the peace in the ever-changing world of the GREAT GAME. He kept smiling as he... felt something he wasn’t sure what it was creeping towards his Presence.
Soto slowly lifted his left blade and pointed it to an empty space when another NPC stepped out of nowhere being teleported to the location. The man was about to scream, but the blade to his neck registered and he held his breath in fear. As his eyes cleared up he saw the Sergeant Major with his eyes closed blade out and his second hand with a finger over his lips quieting everyone.
“There are four locations where we are being teleported into. You all stand there and stop everyone as they come out.” Soto stepped forward as the next person appeared behind him. He heel-kicked the man to get his attention before he screamed, the man stumbled forward but didn’t make a sound. “Brief him I have something I need to take care of.” Soto walked a few meters in front of the spawn points. He closed his eyes again, and let his skill feed him information. If this was the real world, then Soto was not going to die here, he was going to thrive. To do that he needed to be able to survive solo and with his team. But most importantly as three more people ported in, he needed to protect those weaker than him, because if this was the real world, wars would come, and he and the Colonel were the best warriors he knew, it is a warrior’s duty to protect.

_____________________________________________________________
Soto’s eyes snap open to a dull red glow in front of him. He crossed his blades right above chest level, then in a quick smooth motion he pulled the blades apart. There was a small resistance then the body of what he could only describe as an overgrown coyote flew past him as he dodged out of the way. The head of the coyote couldn’t be avoided however, it hit Soto before falling to the ground with its tongue rolling out of its mouth and then bursting into motes of light. Even the blood that had splashed on him dissipated.
Soto wasn’t even paying attention to the dead coyote, his vision was filled with red fluctuations. “Shit.” He cursed under his breath. ‘Looks like they are stealth hunters.’ He thought. He leaned back as another coyote materialized attacking him and missing only to be stabbed through its neck for its troubles. The beast hit the ground in a mini explosion of light. He swung at a space between him and a NPC as another creature attacked, he killed it before it even fully got out of stealth.
“Any combat powers, use them, protect the noncombatants, Hooah!”
“HOOAH!” A chorus of replies was their answer and the old Sergeant Major smiled.
Everyone had gotten a skill tome, but not everyone got a general Skill, some got Trades, and every a few Open and closed leveling spells. The latter was probably the coolest. Johnny had received the Spell Dome Shield. It could put a 50-meter diameter transparent shield around a group of allies. It had quite a few drawbacks like being static, and any damage in and out was prevented. But when the Corporal ported in and saw Soto kill an invisible beast he activated the Level 1 spell, then fell to his knee with a mana headache, he had poured all of his mana into making the dome as big as possible.
Soto was happy that Dome was up but knew they would only be good if they got rid of the dozen or so inside of the dome. “Everyone we have thirteen or fourteen in the dome. Someone watch the Corporal, medics build a medical station around him. Everyone else, if you can fight, fight. If you can’t get fuck out of the way now!” He ordered killing two more mirror beasts. “Eleven or twelve now.” He hadn’t specialized yet, but he didn’t think he would have time to do it right now, so he was depending on his entire build and stats. The beasts were fast and nimble, but that was Soto’s build so he was even faster and nimbler. So more killing is what he did.
A few minutes later the inside of the dome was quiet as the rest of the Raid party ported in. Soto was glad that Dome didn’t block teleportation, though it would have been hilarious to see players slap into the side of dome, and then slide down comically. But he wasn’t worried if it could bend space and time, what was a little barrier to an all-powerful system?
He was breathing heavily after the whole engagement. He looked around, but his teammates and mentors were nowhere to be seen. But all of the NPCs made it through. He didn’t have time to worry as he looked at the updated Horde prompt.

Something in the world shifted. It was like an invisible pulse of energy originating at his party undulated away from them like sonar. But unlike sonar instead of giving the information of where the enemy was it told the beasts where a new undefended target was located. Soto’s insight skill leveled with that observation. He knelt next to the medics and Johnny. “We just have to hold out for a few more minutes troops, Once the Colonel gets here we will either move or defend, but we can’t leave until he gets here.” Soto didn’t even want to think about him being dead. As soon as the thought came it went, his Soul Bond reassuring him that he was never alone. He smirked.
“How long will that shield spell hold, Corporal Torres?” Yazmin asked her husband Johnny.
“Good question,” Soto added.
Johnny grinned. “Not long against strength-based beasts, but these mirror beasts seem weak in that area.” That was of course when the dome cracked.
Soto tapped him on the shoulder consolingly. “Murphy’s law Corporal, Murphy’s law.” He said sadly, looking at the crack forming where there was a huge red fluctuation. “Hmm, can you open the Dome just at the crack?”
Johnny looked over at the door-size crack. “I think so.” He hesitantly said. Taking a blue potion bottle from Yazmin and downing it in one gulp.
“Well let’s find out if you know so,” Soto said as he stood and equipped his bow. The shiny black bow contrasted with his pale skin and matte black set-piece gloves. “On my go open the a hole at the crack don’t worry about closing it. Everyone get your attacks ready we will have to be fast.”
Soto yanked the bowstring back and held it as dark mana built on the tip of the Dark mana arrow. After about ten seconds the mana at the tip of the arrow began to rotate like a black hole with an accretion disk of sunlight surrounding the mini singularity. “Everyone ready?” The question was largely rhetorical, if they weren’t, it wouldn’t have mattered he couldn’t hold onto the arrow as it was any longer. He just hoped that his attack wasn’t going to be the only one. “Now Corporal!” And he released his fully powered mana arrow.
He worried for no reason, they were more than ready. What Soto didn’t know, what most people wouldn’t find out until much later in the game, was that there was a subtle, but constant influence to grow stronger in the Game. The group of formerly homeless people who had been protected by the Prime team weren’t dumb. They were not treated like humans prior to the pandemic, and even worse after it. The fact that they knew that the team didn’t have to protect them, made the former homeless, Soto needed another name for them to be honest... want to repay their actions with their loyalty. They all knew they would follow Soto’s team for as long as they lived, they owed them their lives, and now that they all had a brand new lease on it. They were going to make the most out of it, and the most they did history will be made by them.
All these thoughts came and went in an instant for everyone, as they gained a laser focus as the entire shield dropped around the crack. What happened next would be talked about around campfires for years to come.
The tale has been taken without authorization; if you see it on Amazon, report the incident.
Johnny cursed at his lack of control as all of the magical attacks hit the crack devastating what little durability it had left, as well as the massive Elite coyote behind the now fully gone dome.

“Corporal put the shield back up ASAP, how long is your cooldown?” Soto whispered in the dead quiet clearing. Only to get no response. He turned and looked at Johnny who had passed out like his mage teammate used to get in the Dungeon. “Spell feedback or Mana exhaustion, either way, he was out of the fight.” Soto didn’t complain he didn’t have time to, the dome dropping was the signal for the rest of the beasts to attack. The only silver lining was when the Elite had died all of the other coyotes broke their stealth. So now they were all visible, the problem was, there were dozens of them inside the wall, and even more outside. Worse Soto could still see fluctuations of more Elite Coyotes entering the walls. “Fire at will!”
No one hesitated, they were looking at death if had. The Beast Horde was about to live up to its name. Soto knew his job in this first wave was the Elites. He couldn’t let them move undetected. So he did what any gamer would do. He interrupted their stealth with arrows to face. The beasts clearly weren’t too bright, and while they made that up with numbers, the beasts were still not great at adapting to the changing tactics of the Raid party. Arrow after arrow hit an Elite and either killed it or severely wounded it.
He was frankly shocked at how effective he was, and even more so about his raid party. But he shouldn’t have been, to be honest. They had survived a much more dangerous enemy in the Dungeon. Still, as he watched an arrow go in and out the back of the skull of an Elite he brought up the information for his Bow it felt more powerful.

Soto’s eyes widened at the upgrade to his weapon, it seemed that he had specialized in one of his Classes since that was the prerequisite for the Platinum mod on his bow. He didn’t have time to figure out what he had gained, the beasts were rushing them, and Soto had to keep up his rate of fire. He aimed at a red fluctuation and tried to draw his invisible drawstring back when he fell to his knee with a massive headache. He looked at his Mana finding the culprit.

“Ugh, that hurts.” He complained as he tried to get up, but fell over with a dizzy debuff. “AYO!” He looked at the beast converging on them and thought of his daughters. He wasn’t going to die here. He was not going to leave them fatherless. His anger started to build as he tried to force his body to move. He tried to push himself, but he just couldn’t. The beast was getting closer and he could only watch as...
_____________________________________________________________
{MP:1/350}
_____________________________________________________________
All of a sudden he could move again. He had had no idea how debilitating using all of your mana could be for a magically enhanced body, but now that he thought about it...
He bisected another coyote with his bladed arrow as it jumped at him
...now that he had thought about it, it shouldn’t have been a surprise at all. His stats were naturally or magically higher than the coyotes, but you add in his noble set pieces and he had them almost doubled or so in Dexterity, it felt like. He didn’t have much time to ponder his individual superiority, since the horde was in full swing. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw the biggest fluctuation yet. ”Shit.” He turned to it and thought about his bladed arrows with a smile. He didn’t have to use Mana to fire these.
Soto knocked a bladed arrow and fired, before it even hit he had fired two more. The distance was only about twenty meters or so. Even so, the big Elite still managed to dodge two of the three arrows. He had chosen penetration over the AOE or cutting options.
The coyote that emerged from the fluctuation was a head taller than the others and was bleeding from the bladed arrow sticking out of its shoulder. The eyes of this beast were different, there was a clear intelligence in them. The beast was weighing its options, attack or retreat and heal wounds. Soto didn’t let it finish its planning.
A barrage of arrows slammed into the ground where the beast had just dodged. Soto cursed at the speed of the damn thing. It might be as fast or slightly faster than him. He smirked, who didn’t like a little challenge?
The coyote knowing it wasn’t going to escape, attacked the human that had hurt it. The grey beast dodged arrow after arrow as it closed the distance between them. That was when Soto realized that NPCs had many ways to defend themselves and that was on full display.
Two NPCs one male, and one female stepped next to and punched at the air in front of Soto, at first Soto had no idea what they were doing, but then tattoos on their arms came to life and a projectile left both NPCs and coalesced into a fireball then they combine a few meters from the Elite beast.
Soto watched as the beast tried to dodge, but the fireball adjusted at the last second to do massive damage to the beast. The NPCs fell to their knees as they got a mana headache of their own, the whole action taking a toll on them. Soto didn’t even notice, he kept firing arrows into the beast until he got a notification as it turned into motes of golden light.

< BATTLE LOG >
{Mirror Coyote Elite(Wave boss) level 20 has died! +4000 EXP(Deferred)}
_____________________________________________________________
Soto smiled at the prompt, but then he frowned at the chaos happening around him. His party was engaged with coyotes and they weren’t doing very well. The good news was now that the wave boss was killed none of the rest were in stealth, but that wasn’t much of a comfort since there were hundreds of the beast swarming them. Most of the party had used their new skills, some had gotten Spells, and some Trades, but most were given Rare and above General Skills.
Not many General Skills have an outward component at the Student tier, but apparently, the ones offered as the Dungeon reward were the exception. Everyone had some way to defend themselves and the party as a whole. Soto saw more fireballs and light blasts killing a half dozen at a time, funny enough the light blast reflected off the stealth ones, but none were in stealth anymore. The problem wasn’t their firepower, no, the problem was their Skill level. While direct hits from the combined powers instantly killed groups of coyotes, the individual attacks on the other hand barely landed on twenty-five percent of their targets, the nimble creatures had much higher Dexterity and an unpredictable movement pattern, it was only the press of bodies that slowed them down, and made them easier targets, but not by much.
Soto looked at the scene and knew that it was bad. They were going to be overrun in seconds. He ready his bladed arrows as short swords, and thought about his own General Skill he got from the skill tome.

‘Well, it was nice to know if I wanted to run away I could easily with this Skill.’ He thought reading his very cool new Skill. It was worthless for his current situation, but still pretty damn cool. He grimly looked back at the motorcycle size coyotes closing in on them, and knew they were going to lose some people once their Mana ran out, and by the cost of the Spells, Trades, and Skills, they would run out of Mana pretty damn soon, and once that happened they were going to be so fucked.
That was when Sugar came back, and the Raid party got a much-needed savior.
“Deploy. Void Bolt”
Soto heard her more than saw her considering that he was too busy dodging attacks from the Canines. He landed a few feet from his dodge and stabbed out, his sword had pierced a great-dane-size coyote. The beast screamed in frustration not being able to pin down its target. Soto paid it no attention. It was already dead. A gout of blood sprayed from the puncture wound, as the bleeding effect of his bladed arrows proc.
Soto looked at his bloodline item. Just as a big blast of pure black energy wiped out a whole group of coyotes in an instant. If the park was a clock and Soto was facing north to noon, Sugar had just taken out all of the enemies from two through three o’clock. Soto smiled. “Keep that up Sugar, keep that shit up for real.”

He had two of the bladed arrows in his hands and he knew until they were fired that they wouldn’t return to the quiver.
After reading the prompt quickly, he brought his focus back to the park, while it was an early summer morning, it was still getting hot faster than what he believed was normal his mind was still slow from Mana overuse, and then his body started to burst with energy. His small wounds began to heal slowly right before his eyes. He saw he had a new buff.

Soto almost smacked himself. He had buffs to offer as well. He also noticed that Kuma had clearly leveled or Tiered up, or whatever they do in this game. The last time he had gotten the buff it was only a 20 times boost. That meant Sugar had leveled up maybe even specialized again.
Again he didn’t have time to speculate, as more coyotes threw themselves at the party with reckless abandon. Soto flipped, rolled, and dodged. He was their main target since he had killed the Elites, and he wasn’t hiding or huddled next to another player. A single target with blood-soaked weapons of their fallen comrades was enough to bring most of the coyote’s ire. Soto knew it was bad because he wasn’t a tank. But he wasn’t afraid because like before, and most of his adult life, one thing had been true.
He wasn’t alone.
“Void Bolt.” The bolt was bigger than it was before, and more devastating apparently as it killed two big coyotes and wounded one more. An NPC saw the wounded Coyote and slammed a staff made from mana on it. The animal was put out of misery and disappeared into motes of light like the others.
Soto wasn’t idle during all this, “INSPIRE!” He yelled and the party began to fight back in earnest. Every little buff counted.

_____________________________________________________________
Even with all of the buffs, Spells, Skills, and stats, the enemy just had more than they could handle. Soto could see the writing on the wall. They were seconds away from losing people, and he hated it when that happened with a passion. He needed to do something, but he couldn’t think of anything off the top of his head, hell he had even forgotten about using his own Spells. His memory may be perfect at remembering things he had seen, but that doesn’t mean he couldn’t be overwhelmed with information. He just fell back on his training. But because of that training, he knew a lost cause when he saw one. He couldn’t do anything about it. He thought about specializing again, but dismissed the idea immediately, while it may give him a quick boost to his power, he didn’t want to mess up his future build because of a few measly mutts.
He watched as NPCs unleashed powerful Skills that either empowered their bodies so that they could do major damage or take it. He saw quite a few mana-based weapons like Johnny’s shield being deployed to protect the fighters and healers in the group. About 10 percent of the NPCs got some type of healing Skill, and that was the only reason they hadn’t lost anyone yet.
Speaking of Johnny and the healers, Yazmin had organized the medics and got a designated area set up for triage, and medical help. Johnny was at the center and about ten others lay wounded with him. Ten more were helping them not paying attention to their surroundings. Some were in really bad shape. The medics looked exhausted, but Kuma’s buff was helping.
They were not alone, however, around them stood twenty of the healthiest-looking former homeless NPCs who had gotten body enhancement Skill tomes. And they defended the medical personnel with their strong bodies.
Soto was proud of them, but he knew that it was only a matter of time before they were overrun.
But again he had forgotten. He wasn’t alone. He had Sugar, and she was not the same as she was when she first got into this game. It was like the age-old saying, only conflict brought out the true character of a man.
“Fire at will.” Sugar said as the park was filled with Void energy as rounds big and small reaped lives throughout the park.
