{CONGRATULATIONS}

{GAIA WELCOMES THE FIRST EXPERT SKILLER OF THIS ITERATION}

{At the beginning of the Expert Tier the trunk of your Skill-tree is fully formed and the first branches are beginning to grow. Each Tier above Tier 4 can have two branches that grow with Sub-Skills, getting a Sub-Skills to Expert may allow for more branches for those branches.

{-Stamina- is used in Sub-Skills as an energy source. -Stamina- regen is based on 10% of Endurance stat per minute and the Max Pool is 1000 for every Expert Tier Skill or sub Skill.

Choose Expert branch Sub-Skill to finalize Tier up. If your Sub-Skill isn’t chosen by Expert 9 two will be chosen for you and leveled accordingly.}

{-Growth- You are now an Expert. Experts are the players that are on the Master of One Journey in the GREAT GAME. They can use Perks that they can purchase at the skill store with their new -Growth- pool. The -Growth- pool is not only used for Perk store purchases, but it can also enhance all aspects of the Skill-tree path as well. -Growth- can be used to either kinetically push, pull, cut or trap(Randomly given at becoming an Expert). -Growth- regen is based on 1% of Endurance stat per Day and the Pool has no limit.}

The Legacy’s eyes opened to the blaring prompts. His head was spinning, and the Space Wrath sat lotus style floating a few meters off the ground. It couldn’t have been long since he had passed out since blood still covered the LAW. He was going to say something, but the LAW seemed to be concentrating on something very important, as his eyes moved like he was in deep REM sleep.

Clyde wanted to groan, but couldn’t because his body was still frozen. He sighed much to his and the LAW’s surprise. The LAW in question opened one of his black eyes and it landed on the Legacy, the eyes in question had concentric rings around the iris of different colors. He slowly shook his head, and then with a burst of energy, all of the blood, spit, and grim on his face was cleaned.

‘That was pretty cool, I’m not going to lie about that.’ Clyde thought.

“You are sooooo annoying Legacy.” The dead serious voice of the LAW said to him. He stood up and for the first time the Legacy noticed that this man was over seven feet tall, The LAW walked up to Clyde and looked down on him straight into his eyes. “Your little advancement almost killed me you know?”

“I didn’t to be honest, I was just as surprised as you when you started bleeding,” Clyde answered. “I apologize of course.”

“Just as surprised...just as surprised, you have no idea how surprised I was...” He shook his head like a parent who never told their kid not to touch the hot stove but had just touched one to save said kid, only for the kid to tell them the stove was hot. It was pure frustration. He had to remember the GREAT GAME doesn’t keep information on lock because of maliciousness, it was all about discovery, and the LAW had discovered three things while pushing the Skill to Expert.

One was something he should have known, but it had been such a long time since it had happened. Branching paths can give skill quests, and a lot of low-level skill quests for classers were specialization quests, so when the Legacy had specialized, which admittedly he had told him to do, his spell had upgraded a tier. The LAW was just glad he was at Journeyman 9 when it did because if he had made a Master Skiller the game would have erased him from existence. The backlash for what happened nearly killed him anyway.

He had heard about branching paths before, but very few people of worth who chose the general spell path ever did anything of note with the exception of the Sage of Light and Life. But he was the exception to every rule in the game. The LAW shivered at the power that Olorun had commanded Eons ago. ‘His Potency must be out of the stratosphere by now.’ Wrath shook off the innocuous thought, he would cross that bridge when he had to run across it for dear life.

The LAW put his focus back on the annoying Legacy, that had shown him that what he now knew was not an embellished story of Nightingdale, if anything it may have been undersold in his history lessons, His swirling black and gold eyes bore into the frozen... semi-frozen Legacy, and couldn’t contain his vex-ness. He didn’t open his mouth because he was afraid he couldn’t control his temper.

The second thing that he had learned was that almost dying from a near-catastrophic spell backlash did wonders for his Titles. Two of them had upgraded and he cleared two legendary effects prerequisites. That hadn’t happened his over ten million years, so long that the Game gave him a Perseverance Title. He hadn’t gotten a Title since he had become a LAW.

The most annoying, and third thing that he had learned while pushing the spell was the Karmic gift that the LAW had received for fulfilling his Sponsor’s duty. It was information about getting two of his Skills to Divine, a path that was previously blocked to him, and because of that and all of the damn cheating he was doing, he now owed the Legacy more on his Karmic debt than he had when he first got here. The only good news was all the frustrating man...no, he was a debt monster, all the debt monster had to do was Tier up and the LAW’s foundation would be fine.

“Clyde wasn’t sure why he didn’t say anything to the clearly seething LAW in front of him, but that might have been the best decision of his life considering the LAW was close to a tipping point, and if he had killed him out of spite his Karmic debt would kill the LAW, and the planet would burn in seven hundred years.” The Narrator confirmed Clyde’s hindbrain responded to the anger coming off of the very, very large Japanese man.

‘What the hell did I do?’ Clyde thought he was just glad that the narrator didn’t say all of that out loud. He saw the LAW visibly get a hold of himself putting on a forced fake smile. ‘Oh boy, not good.’

“You are so annoying you know that?” The LAW just couldn’t help himself.

“I have been called that in the past, yes. I am the youngest of four children.” The Legacy answered honestly.

“Because of my debt, my words of power are less effective on you.” He shook his head sadly “So annoying. You should see what you have learned before...”

Right before his widening eyes, his pupil disappeared. The LAW stared at the spot where the Legacy stood a millisecond ago. “That should have been impossible!” He screamed to the heavens. “Why must my pupil be so annoying!” He sighed frustrated. “It had to be because of my debt that he could be taken from me so easily. I have to come up with quests and events to make up this debt, good thing he accepted me as his Sponsor without asking for anything in return. I hope he makes it through his ascension trial.” The LAW finally calmed down and went back to his Lotus pose.

His blood on the ground below him started to be absorbed by the dungeon floor.

{THE QUESTION}

_____________________________________________________________

Clyde sat in a chair in a pitch-black room. As he scanned around he saw a faint outline of light in an accretion disk being sucked into the room.

“Am I in a black hole or something?” He said out loud looking at the light.

“Very good observation Player.” A female voice said through the darkness Clyde could feel her Presence right outside the blackhole for some reason, but still couldn’t see a thing inside the room.

“Who is there?” Clyde asked on guard, he was in a chair but he couldn’t feel a floor in front of him, so he wasn’t about to stand up or anything stupid.

“Who I am currently doesn’t matter the only thing that matters is your Trial. It begins now!” The voice and Presence were gone with those words and his perception and Presence were forcibly reduced.

“Okay.” He chuckled at the empty room.

“Player!” A booming voice broke the silence of the room it was an ancient deep voice, and it asked THE question. “GOOD! EVIL! ORDER! or CHAOS! Choose, who are you?”

“Huh?” Clyde was confused.

“GOOD! EVIL! ORDER! or CHAOS! Choose, who are you?” The voice repeated.

“What am I choosing for?!” He yelled in the darkness.

“GOOD! EVIL! ORDER! or CHAOS! Choose, who are you?” The voice repeated again.

The Legacy stayed quiet this time, and waited, after about five minutes of counting,

“GOOD! EVIL! ORDER! or CHAOS! Choose, who are you?” The voice said again.

‘Okay so it’s on repeat, and if I say anything else it will repeat itself.’

“I am all of them, to be honest.” He began after thinking about it. The voice didn’t say anything so he continued. “I am a good man, but I have done evil to others in the pursuit of that good.” He paused really thinking, in the dark room, all you had were your thoughts, and he was starting to understand why he was in here.

“I don’t think I am any different from the normal everyday human in that sense. I care for my fellow man, but I am also aware of the awful things humans can do to each other when they perceive their superiority, either by social construct, or tribal zealotry. That being said I can tell you most human would give you the shirt off their back if they knew that shirt could change your life. So I would say most humans are good. But I don’t think I’m all good.”

Did you know this story is from Royal Road? Read the official version for free and support the author.

He pondered some more for a few minutes. “I am most certainly not evil, though am I capable of great evil? Of course, my enemies have called me worse, but what do I care, most of them are dead.” The Legacy spoke more confidently. “Good and Evil are not ideals that a soldier has the luxury to evaluate in real-time. Life or death situations can leave a trooper broken because they made a snap decision, and now an innocent child has no parent. War was always ugly because you were surrounded by foreign people while being a foreigner in their country, whether you were there to help them, or not hostilities will always arise because we were always the foreigners.”

The darkness allowed him to keep mussing over his thoughts out loud, Clyde didn’t mind the dark, he felt oddly comfortable in the dead silence. “No Good and Evil are essentially social constructs. A lion killing the cubs of another lion is nature, but if a new husband killed off the kids from his wife’s previous marriage he would go to jail in all countries... at least in modern times, well I hope all countries.”

The Narrator took over his thinking in the dark. “The newly born Expert Skiller continued thinking about THE QUESTION feeling like he was figuring out a fundamental truth, one every cultivator must touch upon before they can gain access to their -Inspiration- Pool; the Tier 7 and above Cultivator energy. But he already knew the answer, but there was one thing Clyde was, and that was thorough.”

That led him down another path he started with the east-west of Good and Evil, now onto the north-south of Order and Chaos. “Now Order and Chaos aren’t social constructs per se, the universe has its order, but chaos still reigns. While humans are beings of chaos, that is because they are subjected to many chaotic things. But humans crave order even when chaos is needed sometimes, it was better to get everything in order, in order to maximize chaos.”

He was babbling, just throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping it stuck, Clyde himself was all about order, he loved rules and disliked anyone who broke them maliciously. Now there are always exceptions, he was an adult at a turning point in his adopted country’s history when no political party could convince the people that they were trustworthy. The JTF charter was a set of rules put together by some of the greatest minds in the world at the time. The Colonel had input as well as was the most senior commissioned officer on that panel. It may have been the single most important thing he had ever accomplished in his over fifty years of life, and outside of duster attacks, crime worldwide was down for the last ten years, the last two even more so, he truly believed that input had the most impact on humanity. He even had a chance to enforce those rules, and witnessed where the rigidity of the rules forced people who were usually good and orderly into evil acts of chaos. A few of which he may have perpetrated if he had been honest with himself.

And being honest with himself was what he needed to be. This trial asked him THE QUESTION, the one that was the make-up of his very state of being.

He started to ponder out loud. “Humans are first and foremost survivors. No doubt about that. The fact the Inuits exist was a testament to that. Most creatures migrate to more habitable areas or evolve. Not humans, no we adapt. It is why we were at the top of the food chain on our planet despite not having any overwhelming physical abilities. Adapting is an evolution of the mind, it is looking at the chaos of the world, and bringing order to it. Sometimes the order they bring is Evil like the Third Reich, or Good like the JTF. Sometimes what was Good and Orderly for you could create Chaos and Evil deeds to others.”

He always remembered the story his Dad used to tell him of the richest man ever. When Munsa Musa started his pilgrimage from the Mali empire in West Africa to Mecca, he gave gold and gifts to almost everyone on the way there and back, after he left the region entire economies were destroyed because of the worth of gold, (which was only valued at the time because of its shininess.) plummeted. It took them years if not decades to get the cost of gold to not be so inflated. Anyone who left the region with that gold though would have been rich if they could protect it, after all, Munsa Musa was not a fool he traveled with a massive army for not only guarding his life but also his wealth. He filled the pockets of tradesmen and peasants alike, following his self-imposed tenet. But even after finding out about this great man’s deeds, all it led to was jealousy. Instead of praising the generosity of this man, they cursed him, and their own luck. It was arguably the reason that led to the exploitation of the entire Continent over the next few centuries.

As a kid, Clyde always wondered what would have happened if Munsa Musa had used that wealth to unite Africa under one banner, what would it look like today? That made his thoughts come to a screeching halt. “Why don’t I do that now?”

“Now that I think about it, Maybe Munsa Musa meant to do that, maybe he saw the threat of the pretty recent crusaders against his people. Maybe not, but I can do that now. Well not spread wealth to everyone. But I can unite everyone under one banner.”

“GOOD! EVIL! ORDER! or CHAOS! Choose, who are you?” The voice said again.

“Hold your horses dawg, I working through it. Damn so impatient.” He sighed, he was stalling again. “I can’t stand Chaos, it is unavoidable, but I can’t stand it. I like my schedules and spreadsheets to be honest. But I have been on my fair share of chaos-causing missions.”

“GOOD! EVIL! ORDER! or CHAOS! Choose, who are you?” The voice said again.

“Good, Evil, Order, or Chaos, who am I?” The legacy asked himself.

“YES!” The voice answered much to his surprise.

“While I can be evil and chaotic, I prefer to be orderly and good, so I guess-”

“NO GUESSING!” The voice cut him off with a yell.

The legacy thought it over. “I am them all...”

“Just as he started the ‘A in all’ he felt four... EYES?... He had no idea what else to call them, the powerful Presence of four someTHINGs was focused on him, and while it was still dark inside his room on the outside there were four... he was just going to go with calling them eyes, the Eyes glowed with inner light. In front of him was an eye with soft white pulsing light, he glanced behind him and just saw an even darker darkness than the one he was sitting in. To his right was something different, it was a Yin Yang symbol, but instead of black and white sides, the entire symbol was pitch black with bright glowing white lines outlining the separate parts and white dots in the middle seemingly fighting back the dark. On the left was the exact opposite, bright white light outlined and dotted with light-absorbing darkness. What the Legacy will soon learn was that these were the Fundamental TRUTHs of Existence, and they were here to judge him, because he called on all of them.” The Narrator perfectly explained his situation.

TRIAL AREA

JUNIOR ADJUDICATOR

A pale-faced female dark elf stood on a floating disk of swirling energy and stared wide-eyed at the human sitting in the black hole trial. She shivered at the four projections of the TRUTHs. She had just gotten this posting after her mandatory one hundred thousand-year fellowship, and this Gaia Celestial... She looked at her magical clipboard... was supposed to be a newly integrated planet, an easy posting.

“An easy posting my perfect ass it was.” She whined she had broken protocol by talking to him because there were too many abnormalities about this guy. First off it was way too soon, the planet was integrated seconds ago. Of course, people can get powerful before their first Common Period, but how would a sponsor who would have just woken up know to go to... She shook her head, this was why she had help, this was why there were rules in the game, and it was also why her race was responsible for overseeing the trials, while they may have been the cause of the Source war it was in their nature, not out of maliciousness. The Titans were too imposing, and the dragons were fucking dragons they didn’t care about anything that wasn’t shiny and new. So the dark Elves were the only elder race who could run them, it helps that dark elves are a group that does not usually lie. “I need help with this master.” She said casually knowing no matter where she was in the multiverse she would hear her words and be drawn to her.

A few minutes after the words left her mouth a rip in space slowly flowed open like rippling water as another female dark elf with similar features to the first stepped out of the rip to stand next to the first dark elf, the rip sealing up behind her.

“Why so pale Junior?” She said taking a bite out of a purple pineapple-looking fruit. She stopped chewing when she saw the four projections, she almost choked when she reviewed the Player log. After using psychokinesis to pull the offending piece of fruit from her esophagus, her tears stopped falling. She looked at her pupil with anger. “You could have warned me daughter.”

“Mother, no one told you to smoothly walk into my trial area eating that choking hazard of a fruit, and then ignore me before looking at my trial.” The first elf rebutted. “Plus we are in space, what are you choking on? We don’t need air.” Junior said exasperated

“It still hurts, this is a Mystic Tier fruit...” She sighed hard, and then her face hardened. “Oh, this is no longer your trial daughter. You must go get the Executor, I will be taking over this player’s trial. This is the first time all of the TRUTHs have shown themselves since before Nightingdale. That can only mean one thing.”

“This Player is a Prime.” The Junior whispered with surprise.

“No daughter, this player is THE Prime.”

“T-the Omega Prime?” She asked not taking her eyes off the black hole.

“Yes. Now go do as I say, get the Executor.” The senior ordered.

“YOUR ANSWER IS ACCEPTABLE!” Four voices say into his mind. “What concept defines you?”

“No list?” Clyde asked semi-jokingly

“The list is infinite concepts are formed every day.” The now Voices answered.

“I thought Space was my concept?”

“SPACE can be a concept, but then you can not take it as an Element... actually YOU can! Your Title bonus is powerful.” Another new female voice explained to him.

“I kind of have a lot of them which one? Title bonus I mean.”

“Your world-first bonus for your Legendary+ title.” The female voice elaborated.

_____________________________________________________________

< LEGENDARY+ >

{WORLD FIRST BONUS: Utility+; Non Negative combination: No negative effects for bad combinations. Chance of random positive effect added.}

_____________________________________________________________

“Oh yeah, well that’s good to know. Why are you helping me with this choice, but the previous choice you just kept repeating?” He asked while he thought.

“There are only four TRUTHs, a Cultivator must find their truth. But concepts sometimes need to be explained.” The voice helpfully answered.

“Okay, so I can ask about any concept?” Clyde asked with great interest.

“Yes...but this is a trial and like most tests, has a time limit.”

“Que? Come again?” The legacy switched to Spanish he was so surprised. “No one mentioned a time limit before.”

“You are being timed did your sponsor not tell you this?” The female voice asked concerned.

“Nope. No, he didn’t! I was just sitting around thinking about everything like I had all the time in the world. How many parts do I have left.”

“Four questions, and the battle scenarios.” The female voice answered. “You don’t have a very good sponsor do you player?”

“I am starting to think that myself.” He chuckled at the LAW’s face always being surprised.

“Well, no big deal while speed is one factor of the trial it isn’t the only factor.” The voice continued.

“Oh thank Gaia,” The Legacy let out a breath he didn’t even know he was holding in. “So getting the best answers has its perks?”

“That is the most important, and highest weighted part of the trial.”

“Bet.” The Colonel just started to scan the list of concepts and noticed a dull glow over most of them which if he knew from his Synergistic Sight Title bonus meant that he could combine for great effects, but once he got to the concept of ADAPTION it blazed bright like the sun in his vision almost so bright he could barely make out ADVANCEMENT which came afterward. ADVENTURE was the next bright concept followed by AUTHENTICITY, then BRAVERY. He started to talk about his options aloud so he wouldn’t go crazy looking at a near-infinite list. “Can I see just the ones that blazed as bright or brighter than Adaption?”

_____________________________________________________________

< TOP CONCEPTS FOR YOUR TRUTH AND ELEMENT >

{ADAPTION, ADVENTURE, AUTHENTICITY, BRAVERY, CONQUEST, CONTROL, DEVELOPMENT, ETHICS, FAMILY, FREEDOM, FRIENDSHIP, GREATNESS, HARMONY, IMPROVISATION, INFRASTRUCTURE, JUSTICE, KINDNESS, LAWFULNESS, LEADERSHIP, LOVE, MILITARY, NICENESS, OPTIMISM, PRAGMATISM, QUALITY, RESILIENCE, RIGHTS, RISK, RULES, SAFETY, SERVICE, SOCIETY, SPACE, STORY, STRATEGY, TALENT, THOUGHT, TRUTH, UNDERSTANDING, VALUES, WINNING, WONDER.}

_____________________________________________________________

“All right that is better and in alphabetical order, I really didn’t want to be here forever scrolling. But still too many.” Clyde mused out loud. “How about this,” he began hoping his HUD and Title bonuses would help him out. “Which ones will help the most amount of people?”

_____________________________________________________________

< TOP CONCEPTS FOR IMPACTING THE MULTIVERSE >

{ADVENTURE, CONQUEST, FREEDOM, FRIENDSHIP, GREATNESS, LAWFULNESS, LEADERSHIP, LOVE, MILITARY, SPACE, STORY, UNDERSTANDING, VALUES, WINNING.}

_____________________________________________________________

“Well, that worked way better than I thought it should, not that I am complaining.” He quickly corrected himself. “Thirteen Concepts, Adventure, in the game being an Adventurer was massive since they save lives across the many worlds of this multiverse. But I am already on that quest, so I don’t think it would be my focus for a while.”

“Conquest and freedom seem like opposites when we look at them, but Conquest can lead to both freedom and oppression.

“I am not surprised friendship is here and family was not, your impact on your family doesn’t always reflect in the real world, while your impact on your friends can impact more families.

“I will always be great because greatness is earned through consistency, discipline, planning, and passion. Daddy always used to say that everyone has a passion, but without a plan, you can never unlock your passion, without discipline, you can never execute your plan, and without consistency, you will never be disciplined. Greatness is not born it is made through those four tenets.

“Lawfulness is cool, but some laws are awful, like the one that sent me here!” He yelled the last one to the sky. “I hope you are sneezing somewhere.”

“Leadership, like greatness, requires the same four tenets with an extra one in evaluation, reading your troops is important so that you know how to best effectively deploy them.”

“Good to see love make this list, but I don’t need any more of that concept. Whoever said that it was better to love and loss, than to have never loved, had clearly never been truly in love. Losing love can be... Nope almost got me there wondering brain. Almost.” Clyde caught himself.

“Military has been my life for...really ever, my dad, aunts, and uncles all served. There was never any doubt that I was going to join and retire as a soldier, I knew that at fifteen, and started applying the greatness tenets to getting ready for Military life.

“Space is everything around us, in between us, and even inside of us.

“Story, well they said the pen is mightier than the sword, and in this game, it actually might be, but while Clyde was the storyteller, the Colonel is a story-maker.”

“Understanding was so underrated in the modern world. Everyone loves to hold people to their past actions while wanting others to forgive them for theirs. If we change that simple thing about ourselves, we would fundamentally change the way we handle criminals and criminal acts. We were all young and dumb, most of us just didn’t get caught. So we should stop judging people until we try to understand them.

“Agreed-upon values are required for a society to work. But there are values that are universal, the innate ones that most beings had, like don’t stab someone in the back, unless you get a bonus for it, like an assassin.” He chuckled. “Values are too vague.”

“Winning is not guaranteed, will taking the concept guarantee me a win?”

“Against lesser concepts, mostly yes.” The helpful female voice answered.

“Oh wow, I wasn’t expecting an answer, thank you, ma’am.” Clyde politely replied. “There are lesser concepts? Of course, there are lesser concepts.”

“Lesser is a bit of a misnomer in the GREAT GAME player. Everyone including Elders have secret affinities, so while Love may not be a powerful concept for a troll, a succubus on the other hand would be overpowering with it.” The voice informed.

“Okay that makes sense, so if I have a high affinity for winning, I might win against all obstacles?” The Legacy asked hopeful.

“You would still need to be powerful, but you wouldn’t have to be as cautious. You could throw yourself with reckless abandon if you wanted to win. Now that doesn’t mean you are going to live but, you would win. But there is no way to know it’s a secret of the game. You have to find out by trial and error, mostly error.”

“Fair enough, HUD can you bring up my highest affinities for the remainder and remove any below... What is a high affinity?” He asked for a baseline.

“It is a secret, you know what that means right? No one knows them until you find out.” The voice sounded annoyed. Then with a sigh, she answered. “Anything over 85% is considered very high Affinity, but I have heard of some with over 100% but I have never seen anyone with over 94%.”

“Okay thank you, anything 94% and above.”

“You won’t have any that high on your first trial. Your affinities will grow as you age and level. Most of the Players over 50% affinity were at least tier 13 that is gold rank Cultivators and above.”

TRIAL AREA

ADJUDICATORS & EXECUTOR

The now pale-faced Adjudicator looked at the black hole trial with the same look as her daughter had thirteen minutes ago, she was so shocked she didn’t feel the Executor and her daughter return. Not that it mattered, they were immediately caught up with the conversation after analyzing the black hole trial and were in varying states of shock themselves.

One of the innate abilities that all dark elves possess is truth seer. It is a single-level ability that makes it impossible to lie to a dark elf. It was said in the shadows that dark elves could lie, but don’t because in their society it would be useless.

The regal-looking male elf who represented the dark elf council, turned to the two adjudicators, “Did you two get an upgrade to your titles just now?”

The other two elves look at their HUD it was turned off while they were working. Their eyes went wide.

“Yeah, that is what I thought, I do not remember the last time I had gotten such a big Karmic debt from someone. It isn’t enough to hinder me, but make sure the quest he gets can cover the debt please, or we won’t be able to judge any of these trials ever again.”

The Adjudicators closed their mouths with a snap.
